Could it be matte lips have had their time under the sun? Say it ain’t so. One of Kenya’s biggest beauty trends is witnessing the comeback of gloss. Glossy lips are making a comeback. The 90s throwback vibes are a strong runway presence. Turns out highshine glossy looks are thought to ‘lift’ the face and bring an air of youthfulness to the complexion. We beg to differ. Matte is queen!

Products that not only blur gender lines, they obliterate them by focusing on needs. K-Beauty has been very active at catering to Asian men. Beauty and skincare industries are witnessing startups that are all about what the product can do, not who it is doing it for. Panacea, a K-Beauty inspired acne product targets the ‘genderagnostic’, Jecca, Asarai, NGS (Non Gender Specific) - yes, really, and Buckler’s.

Is there anything more divine than an ‘80s satin dress? Yes. A better version of your mom’s bridesmaid collection. The new improved satin has already started dominating runways. Expect this to trickle down into mainstream fashion sooner than later. Maybe just in time for your wedding….

Maybe it’s a #BlackPanther feline influence. The thick black eyeliner looks kinda cute, but a super-sharp precision cut cat-eye look is so much more cooler. And hotter. After all, is there a better way to channel a retro kind of seductive danger than the 70s fearsome female? Nina Simone, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and Sophia Loren are cat-eye icons. As was Amy Winehouse and now, Dita von Teese. The extreme cat eye is going to be about extreme wings, mod-style graphics and a bold striking line across lash lines. Purr-fect!

Typically fragrant hair suffers the dryness of alcohol. Someone got smart. This year brands like drop scented hair mists formulated to give you soft, shiny tresses. Hair perfumes are now being added to morning beauty regimes in addition to regular perfumes. Most of the hair mists prevent frizz and combat hair dryness while adding a delightful fragrance to the hair. Thierry Mugler’s Angel, Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb, Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire, Narciso Rodriguez For Her, Burberry’s Brit Hair Mist and Nicki Minaj’s Minajesty are just some designer parfums that have versions just for your hair.

We would ask if you wanted for Black Panther 2, but judging by the box office records, and the fact that #BlackPanther is officially the biggest superhero movie of all time, not to mention the most tweeted movie ever, it would be a moot point. We presume the answer to be a unanimous yes. If you haven’t seen it yet, then you are not going to have a clue of what’s going on when the sequel is out. Yes, Black Panther is officially getting a sequel! Of course it was expected. Who doesn’t want to pack up and move #WakandaForever?to

Music industry? Check. Fashion industry? Check. Beauty industry? Check. Sock industry - well, check that too! But wait. There’s more. You can expect a serious case of Love on the Brain with sexy superstar Rihanna now adding an intimate industry to her list of Fenty domination. The starlet has signed a deal with TechStyle Fashion group – formerly known as JustFab, for an exclusive collection of lingerie. As of now, there is no firm launch date, but samples are already out. Keep your eyes peeled.

Serena Williams is creating buzz for something entirely unrelated to her post-pregnancy tennis badassery. The multihyphenate is now entering the high-stakes, high-rewarding uber competitive and diverse beauty market with a new cosmetics line. Aneres, (Serena spelled backward) will launch Fenty style: a comprehensive selection of cosmetics totaling 18 beauty categories. Expect to see makeup, body and hair products. Basically, she’s got you covered.

RICK ROSS FOR SHO

It was a thrilling, redefining moment when renowned wedding photographer Antony Trivet was declared 2018’s Sony World Photography Awards. His acclaimed work makes it into the 2018 Awards book and will be shown at the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition, London from April through to May. The awards bring together photographers from all over the world to showcase their work.

Yes, he was the world’s most famous scientist, a global inspiration to people with disability, galaxy’s most unlikely star, with a genius mind trapped in a failing body. However, Stephen Hawking, who passed on at the age of 76, was a true rock star. So much so when he died his one on one interview with fellow pop culture physicist Neil deGrasse who tweeted, “His passing has left an intellectual vacuum in his wake. But it's not empty. Think of it as a kind of vacuum energy permeating the fabric of spacetime that defies measure. Stephen Hawking, RIP 1942-2018.,” has become a must watch.

Martin Ndagi’s grandfather has been his all-time inspiration. He watched grand dad tailor suits growing up and fell in love. Professionally, he has been in the fashion industry for a year and a half year. The Suit Guru designation came from this long-standing passion to be the best; to be the expert. Martin, like many a creative before him, borrows ideas to create something entirely his own. “if you see something you like, there’s no reason you cannot incorporate it into your style. Open your eyes and ears to all around you.” His line is unisex and child friendly giving him quite the advantage when it comes to clients. He has worked with fashion bloggers and influencers like Lucia Musau and Silvia Njoki, publicist, blogger and journalist Anyiko Owoko and TV personality Julie Gichuru. It figures Martin’s dream client is the ultimate gentleman, Jidenna, the perfect suit muse. So far he has not showcased his work. Good news though. He is currently working on his A/W 2018/2019 collection and says this will be his best work yet.

Remember how women are taking over the world? Well this would not be fair unless we take up everything including men’s clothing right? Beat the men at their own game with man-inspired tailored pants. It’s classy, elegant and very comfortable. Remember though it is inspired by the other sex, not full on masculine. Mix it up with feminine details like heels, jewelry and lipstick. Makeup and hair are easy areas to womanise. And remember good posture helps you look more like a woman. Think this is limiting? Here are ways of rocking your tailored pants so next time you shop, don’t be afraid to wander into the men’s section for more ideas.

There was a time Kimono simply meant clothing in Japanese. Now it is what we know as their thin, long-sleeved fulllength traditional garment made out of silk. In fact, kimono literally translates into “thing to wear.” Historically influenced by the Chinese fashion culture, the kimono has like every other thing ever made evolved over centuries from as early as 794 to date. One of its iterations is similar to an open cardigan currently flying off the shelves as a wardrobe must have. The beauty of kimonos is in their layering. It can be dressed up in different ways and for numerous occasions. Make it your own by belting up, changing up your bold prints to sealing in a sleek monochromatic look.

Yes, there is a difference between maroon and burgundy! Maroon is a variant of the colour red made with a combination of purely primary colours: red, blue and yellow. Burgundy though is more of a red-purplish colour that looks more like rich wine. Maroon is a timeless colour, luxurious and at the same time reserved.

A Lucimi-Yoruba slave turned resistance fighter, Carlota led a slave rebellion in the Cuban plantations from November 5 1843, a rebellion lasting a year. The clever, fearless Carlota was captured and sold as a girl to a Triumvirato sugar mill. Slave uprisings in this part of Cuba had quite the ripple effect. Spain got word from the US that the latter would help quash uprisings. An accomplished musician, she used talking drums to send coded messages. She went into battle wielding a machete only to be captured and brutally executed as a warning to others. Instead, she served to inspire rebellion and serve as an example of revolution, a woman’s strength and the very essence of what Cuba stands for

Widowed and exiled after the assassination of Kigeri IV - Rwabugiri, the Mwami of the kingdom of Rwanda, by his own stepmother securing the throne for her son to align them with the British, these were the beginnings of the Hutu-Tutsi war that later decimated Rwanda. Muhumusa joined the cult of the great EA Queen Nyabinghi. Thanks to her intelligence, charisma, tactical acumen and regal bearing, rose to a leadership position, later forming her own kingdom. Her aggressive anti-colonialist stance and attempts to overthrow the British government led to her capture. Feared by the British owing to the influence of the cult of Queen Nyabinghi, she inspired them to draft the Witchcraft Act of 1912 before deporting her to Mengo, Tanzania, where she died in 1945. The Nyabinghi fire later inspired Rastafarianism in 1930 Ethiopia.

Nana Yaa Asantewaa, queen mother of the Ashanti, commander-in-chief of the 5th and final Anglo-Ashanti war; the woman Western scholars call Africa’s Joan of Arc. Inheriting the throne from her mother at a time of great colonial upheaval, she was witness to the British demanding The Golden Stool as proof of the Ashanti Confederacy surrender. Outspoken Yaa literally dared the men to grow balls or trade panties with her in a fiery speech. This badass then earned herself a commander-in-chief position, one traditionally held by men. Who refused to joined her army. What did she do? Enlisted women of course. To withhold sex until the men stood up to fight. And like other Warrior Queens before her, employed talking drums. The brilliant, dynamic, strategist surrendered when he daughter and grandchildren were captured. She died in exile in Seychelles in 1921.

What followed were 6 trials, torture and detention, dismissals, acquittals, a hung jury, a mistrial and a not guilty finding. Described as a miscarriage of justice, it somehow culminated in a 30 year sentence. Olugbala eventually broke out and is currently in exile in Cuba. I am a lady who believes you can do anything if you believe in yourself, work hard for it and also a wife, mother, make-up artist and businesswoman. When did your make-up artistry begin?

mornings with brides. I wake up, shower, moisturize my face and move on with life. I keep my routine simple. I wash my face with Black Soap, tone with cold water and moisturize with Enat, recommended by my dermatologist.

When was your first encounter with makeup?

It is growing because when I started it did not make sense to pay for your make-up but now the demand is there and it is high. Women call for make-up application to attend different occasions. When it comes the skill of application we need education. We cannot learn everything from YouTube. Training takes months. When I found out about contouring it took me five months to learn. You have to know your client's features to do it right. Before N&K Lashes came into the picture I had one on one classes. Now I am busier and also open to questions on all platforms.

How do you apply your make-up?

Favourite project/brand/individual you have worked on or would like to work with. Every person I work on is special in their own way that highlights my career. I would want to work with Coke Studio. The first time I worked there as my husband’s assistant. My makeup idols are Jackie Aina any day, Patrick Starr and my husband. He is always challenging me. At the end of the day we sit and compare notes. He is really good!

Make-up up hack all day every day?

44 | COUTURE AFRICA

Yes. I did an interview in the house once and he took my lipstick, came to the room, sat down the interviewer and pretended to apply make-up on her. He sees what we do. If he is interested I would teach him. Learning from the best in his time, he would be much better off.

Apply foundation using your hands. In fact, they are the best. Do it the same way you apply moisturiser. Make sure it seamlessly blends. You’d be surprised what your hands can achieve.

What is your parents take on your career considering your husband is on the same path?

My mum does not wear make-up but my aunt had lots of make-up so I would play with her kit and innocently deny when it was all over my face. Although my very first time was with bougainvilleas. As kids we would pound to remove its juice and apply as a purple lip stain.

A dancer venturing into make-up artistry was a big okay from them plus I did pay my own fees. They may not have understood then and

Moisturiser. Sunscreen. Primer. Setting spray to help my make-up stay till evening. Then my eye area: brows, eyeshadow and finally lashes. Then my foundation, powder highlighter, lips and I am done. I don’t contour every day. But my must haves are my lashes of course, my MAC Studio Fix Powder and my brow kit. If I am going shopping it takes 10 minutes for a minimal look. When I am going all out, 40 minutes.

How did N&K Lashes come to be? People pushing us. And we wanted to do our thing. And it needed to be something close to our hearts. So even if it went down we go under with it. There was a time we were doing a bride’s makeup with her team. We looked for, but did not find any lashes. That was our eureka moment. We did our own extensive research and put the idea into action. We do everything including deliveries. I know the time is coming when I have to let it go a bit because I am so attached to it. My husband and I have people on-call when overwhelmed but we do work together. Make-up and N&K Lashes is all I do and it is paying my bills.

What is your take on our beauty industry in the six years you have been in it?

I just did not know but it was until I was professionally dancing and wanted to look good on stage and I felt that was missing. In 2009 I went to Vera Beauty College and resumed dancing. Friends would ask me to do their makeup. My turning point was when we were doing an advert and the company had brought a make-up artist on set! I was shocked very inquisitive. I eventually stopped dancing in 2012 and joined my passion in the beauty world.

What does beauty mean to you?

Do you have a hair routine?

COUTURE AFRICA | CELEBRITY HAIR

I wash twice a week with Head and Shoulders Shampoo, use mayonnaise treatment every two weeks. In between I do not do much. I use coconut oil to moisturize and keep it clean. My scalp loves coconut oil and I have virtually no dandruff. I use Organix Spray for my natural curls and Olive Oil Hair Polish. I flat iron my wigs.

What are your favourite hair accessories?

Beauty is not just a pretty face. It means having a pretty mind, pretty heart and pretty soul. It means not only showing love and respect to those around you but also to yourself. #SelfLove

I am a laid back creative but I can summon up enough energy to bring the stage down.

Where have you been?

I have been on a conscious tour raising awareness and the importance of participating in voting. I also just finished my 2nd album, Public Demand. I’m releasing it in April. It has 16 tracks and maybe more for the deluxe version. There are featured artists from here, Congo and Nigeria. I tried to fuse it with the African neo-soul sound I am known for with a new school sound-pop more mainstream. I am a versatile artist and my hair story (from natural short 4C hair to brightly coloured extensions) signifies my album perfectly, the African and not so African side.

I have a complicated relationship with my hair. I have a sensitive scalp and tough hair. I am team natural and it is a lot of work. It is not a wash and go. It is a lifestyle. The things you need to do when you wake up and before you go to bed. Wigs are an alternative. Not an influence of the West. And I have varied options. I believe hair is your best accessory; the one accessory that follows you everywhere. I get bored easily and keep changing it up. It is also a form of an image and expression of me as an artist. When they see blue they know it is Dela - the girl with the blue hair.

Is blue your favourite colour?

It was not my usual hairdresser. This one braided my Mohawk to accommodate the weave-in hair then after the shoot he painfully sewed in a crochet bun on top. I felt like a dame. I had to go to another salon to fix it. The rest is the usual. You wanted this colour but it came out a different hue.

I have hats but I love the head chains and the Maasai headgear. Head wraps are essential for your wardrobe too.

Rihanna has been stark black, red hot and golden blonde. And she manages to pull off each of these shades. However does she do it? It’s simple really. And a little complicated if you are trying to dye your own hair at home. For the best hair colour I strongly recommend seeing a professional. Here are some of the things they will look at that you will not know how to do.

I have seen many ared in my time. Somehave made me cringe. If it weren’t for theexceptionally highmaintenance of redcolour, I would run home and shampoo itall off. Some have beenstunners, blessedly. SHADE?YOURWHAT’S

By Carol Odero

What was the natural hair colour you were born with and how does it look underneath the sun? The undertones or natural highlights of your hair is what a good colourist picks up on because these will be lifted and heightened by whatever colour you dye your hair. If your hair is dark, with 1 as the darkest and 10 as the lightest, 1 through to 4 would have more red pigment, 5 to 6 would have more orangish (red and yellow) or neutral pigment and 7 through 10 would be blonde consisting of golden pigment. On one end think Lupita and Alek Wek, in the middle, Naomi Campbell and Rihanna and on the other end, Beyonce.

Have you heard of the “wrist test?” Look inside your arm. If you have blue veins and silver jewelry makes you luminous, you are cool. If your veins are green and gold makes you glow, you are warm. If you can’t figure it out and either gold or silver works with you, you are a neutral. This is the same method you use to suss out your foundation, concealer and lip colours.

AGING GRACEFULLY

This is where the genius of your colourist comes in. Don’t be surprised if you get talked out of the particular shade you want because you can’t step out of your skin and see your all the variations of your pigment. A good colour makes you look fresh, younger, gives your complexion a pop whether it’s warm or cool, and people can’t decide if it is the colour they like or you that they find attractive. They also can’t imagine you with any other colour except the one they are staring at right now and they want some of what you’re having, please. There are countless ways to explore colour really that it should be a positive experience. You know how people say, just do you? This is one of those instances where with a little help from a hair deity, your inner queen will emerge as your coloured crown. Trust me. I know.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHOICES?

Here is the interesting thing about growing older. Softer colours look better on you. And, strangely enough, just before you start going grey, your hair will be at its most pigmented, which means it will be darker right before it goes lighter. Extreme hair colour works great - when you are younger. This is why it is advisable to stay within two levels of your present and existing hair colour if you want it to look more realistic. Or, you could explore some drama within your skin tone range.

Yes. Look at Ebru TV. I have been there a year but look at the changes. It is remarkable.

It is relevant now with everyone talking about it. It has fresh relatable content so absolutely, yes. If I had not taken the time to do what I did before I would not have done what I did at Ebru TV as head of operations.

It is very simple, feminine, elegant and I try to make a statement but not too loud. I still want to be va-va-voom but not make it obvious. Ultimately it has to be classy.

Then why leave Ebru TV?

Is your style influenced by something in particular?

I left because I saw an opportunity knocking and I believe success happens when opportunity meets preparation. I cannot credit enough the value being on Ebru TV has given me. It was a great experience not just professionally but individually. I did not want to leave but I had to sacrifice and compromise. I knew what needed to be done at Ebru and I worked so hard. I would wake up twice in a night to breastfeed, leave early for a 6am studio start and work for 15 hours. I felt there was much to be done and I was the woman for the job. It was important to set the tone and culture, coming in at Ebru, only four years young. It would have been easier to start from scratch but I worked with a great team of young, energetic, supportive minds. I would not expect my team to do what I would not do. We are basically the same age but the boundaries must be very clear.

Now you would say you are equipped on both sides of the business?

What has changed for you as a mother?

It is my highest calling. I do not think I will ever achieve any other greater thing because it is such a beautiful feeling when you realize you are a co-creator with God. That responsibility of a life; moulding, shaping this being. Children bring happiness. My son has a cute personality. He is in his terrific twos which can really be trying but we have our moments. NOTHING STAYS THE SAME

In was in the University of Nairobi studying Journalism and Mass Communication, where I majored in development in communication. At the time a newspaper was being launched. I volunteered as editor. The team included the multitalented journalist, blogger, publicist and founder of anyiko-pr, Anyiko Owoko. We came up with not just a newspaper but something extra: E-Ville; meaning entertainment. Incidentally, Sauti Sol were our, and their, first cover. This propelled my career. I got a job as a writer at Insyder, soon becoming editor. From magazines I went to TV. I hosted KTN’s Str8 Up Live for two years. Then decided to go behind the scenes joining management to learn the business side of media. People thought I was crazy because I just walked into my boss’ offices, told them I loved the show but felt I was outgrowing it. I was super skinny then - before baby - but people thought I was still a teenager. I felt I had so much to offer the world so I took the opportunity. The rest is history. There are points in your career where you have to compromise. I wanted to learn the business of media. This is not something you are taught in school. You learn on the job. It got to a point I could not balance hosting the breakfast show with programming. I’d wake up early to be in studio by 6am, go on at 7am till 9am then I start my day job, stretch at times to 9pm because I would be dealing with people from all over the world in different time zones. I told myself I was a great presenter but when I saw the opportunity for more I took it and focused on that.

Describe your style?

COUTURE AFRICA | HER STYLE

Being on TV how important does style impact your work?

A faith-walking, love-talking and joy-living.

Style is like oxygen. The no. 1 rule of TV is appearance. Unfortunately, I will just go right ahead and say it. Most times you do not earn enough to keep up with the expectations of how you should look. Kenyans grew up wearing mitumba. It is nothing to be embarrassed about. If I am out shopping and I see something I like, I buy it. Although, I need to have the knack for pairing couture and street wear if not wearing couture head to toe. Even for those with wardrobe allowances, it is not enough. Let's start with hair; KES 40,000, a good shoe; KES 4,000, designer dress KES 6,000. Do the math. One look costs roughly KES 50,000 to KES 60,000. You have to be smart with your style, how you mix and match. Have a pair of black pants and six tops to go with it. Very few people have the luxury to afford fashion. I’m talking from experience as a woman hosting a youth show airing 6 days a week.

I have been looking for We Are Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union. I find reading myself reading up on TV creators and presenters. It is focused on selfimportance and parenting … The last thing I Googled recently was when my son fell and chipped his tooth. I tell young mums to read before asking. Go online and come from a point of knowledge. Know what to pick and what to leave.

Fashion details on stockist’s page.

while the one who had aced the first audition was still an intern. That taught me, that in your career some doors must close for others to open. The show ended up being Str8 Up Live. It was not the show I had imagined doing but I decided to make the best out of it. I understood it is about getting your foot through the door.

And currently, it is …

What are you looking to read?

look at his small hands and experience this deep connection because he came from me. He is mine. When he started talking he did not say mummy. He called everyone even the nanny with a difficult name but for me it was always a tag or a motion towards me. That omnipresent nameless person. Until he one day said ‘mummy’ and now he can call me for a whole 30 minutes in different variations.

I do not have a problem with it as long as there is a balance. One thing I am excited about this new job is Red Cross is a very ethical company. I am looking forward to working on ethical content that opens people’s minds. We are facing bad governance and the voters are the young people. We need to work on these young minds now for better leadership 30 years down the line. The best way to go about that is via content that communicates and sets good empowering examples. Hillary Clinton running for president meant shattered that mental block, showing it was acceptable to have female presidents. I realised at Ebru everyone wants to be a presenter. My personal initiative, Creatives on the Rise, equips campus students. There is more to TV than presenting. There is writing, producing, editing, writing reports and I blame social media. It is not all glam, lights and action.

In my line of work I wear a lot of make-up. I never sleep with it. I go to bed with a clean face. People say I have nice skin but I used Vaseline after I gave birth. I did not have time and I would shower then apply Vaseline. Since then it has been my go-to.

KTN. You know how models get discovered?

COUTURE AFRICA | 51

I was discovered by KTN. I was working for Insyder and we went to KTN to gather content for Chaguo la Teeniez Awards nominees. We had to get a signature from one of the managers to access the library. Assertive and headstrong as I am I went looking for him. He signed and we talked and he asked if I could try TV, testing with his webcam. I tested. He told me if I was interested to call him. Sure enough I called. The first audition I was supposed to read the news. I failed miserably. A year later, I went for the second audition and was given a job

Of course the one I will be working for. The Red Cross is planning to open a TV station. I am part of the head team. It will be a youth station. I am good with content and will be programming manager so I am excited!

What was your favourite channel growing up?

Being comfortable in your own skin. I had a baby weighing in at 85 kg and lost my confidence. With the extra weight I felt like a stranger. But again it was how people around me reacted. Be sensitive to new mums with your comments.

COUTURE AFRICA | SEX QUIZ

By Muthoni Ngei

I recently asked a person I had been seeing for a while if I was beautiful and what beauty exactly means to them. The answer I got was so unexpected. Beauty in my perspective is intangible and at that unexplainable satisfactorily. Beauty is …(insert own view). All in all, beauty is more lasting and in-depth than sex appeal. I am sold on the idea that beauty is innate and remains with you forever than sex appeal which leans towards physical appearance than the inherent sense of you. By now it would be safe to say we are familiar with the lighter skinner house slaves and the dark skinned field slave, and how the proximity to the master made them more powerful and more attractive, and the concept of mixed race beauty. This is not going to be one of those conversations. That being said, the concept of black beauty is surprisingly still controversial. There is a former basketballer Gilbert Arenas who unrelentingly calls Lupita Nyong’o “not cute.” Despite being reminded countless times by her fans and anyone with a mind of their own that Lupita is in fact, gorgeous, and has been named the world’s most beautiful woman by People magazine in 2014 when the world hit its first peak Lupita. He maintains he would not date her and prefers his women light of skin. With the epic success of Black Panther however, has come a great deal of interest in the stunning beauty of being African. It also highlights a kind of beauty that has only very recently begun rising. #Melanin is a hashtag that picked up off the strength of black women trusting, leaning into and believing in their own beauty. And it is a hard won kind of gorgeous.

Ironically, it has for all intents and purpose, resulted from the experiences minorities dealt with on the daily. Black hair and black skin did not have the attention of the big corporations. Kitchens turned to laboratories where experimentation led to small batches of products made for home use then later sold within local communities to quick and direct feedback and with the blessed addition

they had to learn fast on their feet the art of makeup and improvisation. Thank you Iman. Then, of course, there is technology and beauty coming together in the most peculiar way. Black skin, we have been told since the beginning of hip hop videos, do not reflect light the same way as lighter skin. Enter lighter skinned video vixens redefining what it meant to be sexy.

The debates about long, silky hair and paler skin, a Caucasian kind of beauty projected on models like Iman, the undeniable lightening of Beyonce, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna, the rise of they who are called socialites locally with their thick, curvy, lusted after bodies, the light-absorbing melanin of Ajuma, all these things have influenced our take on what it means to be beautiful. It is easy to get caught up in what’s hot and what’s not and forget the industry that is determined to fulfill our desired to meet these everchanging standards. Relaxer sales plummeted by 30% with the rise of the Nauralistas. Natural hair bloggers rose spectacularly, introducing kinks into mainstream beauty. Fenty Beauty remains a sweet success story by catering to shades so dark they disappeared into oblivion on the canvas of big boardrooms. Before Lintons Beauty World we had Mombasa Beauty House for skin care needs. This was also a time when brands dictated what beauty was. Relaxed hair with movement was a most desired look. Shops like Super Cosmetics and Best Lady laid the foundation introducing women to

That makes it interesting for brands. Exactly a year ago Shea Moisture released an ad they figured would celebrate diversity by including a few Caucasian faces in their campaign. The backlash was, as it is fondly referred to, “immediate and swift.” When a brand is beloved for its unique qualities and it fails to deliver, it gets banished. Black women felt their Shea Moisture disregarded their part in growing it by allowing new members who were not to be invited to this party and had their own vast array of products to choose from. This brand was theirs. They possessively and yes, jealously guarded it. Where did this brand find the audacity? Shea Moisture’s apology was long, done in two parts to underscore the hurt. Black women with curly and kinky hair wanted their beauty preserved, respected and protected because they were loyal consumers. Black-owned business have to be discerning. As Mintel’s report aptly pointed out, it is about My Beauty, My Rules. The traditional format of breaking down consumers into a demographic is now about “personal routines.” When a black woman does not feel valued and beautiful, she walks.

self care products. As black women’s voices have grown louder globally, the definition of beauty has transformed. And it is gloriously versatile from a bald head, rainbow wigs and 24 inch kinky/straight weaves to knee length sisterlocks. It is the entire chocolate spectrum of skin colour. It comes in curvy as well as fit, lean and toned packages. It is thick and fabulous and toasted by happy men and confident women. Admittedly, there is also surgery and underwear stuffing involved. And beauty it is also individual. Words have deeper meaning. Publications like Marie Claire that have vowed they will no longer use the phrase ‘anti-aging’ and products are contemplating dropping that tag as a selling point. It hasn’t happened yet. The diversity of sistahs means there is no catch-all for beauty. There simply cannot be. Not when a woman’s sense of style, the way she chooses to wear her hair and the needs of her skin and hair are uniquely hers. Smaller brands are better at meeting these needs, creating niches beauties may not have even known existed. It has even forced the creation of darker skinned emojis. Sadly they still wear a cap of straightened hair.

A glance at international fashion publications, be it their websites or actual magazines will show you how the world now celebrates the brands that started out as kitchen recipes. Serums, facial oils, moisturisers and soaps that result from fair trade, products with ingredients grown and harvested as close to home as possible, because even details like soil ph matter, clean beauty where toxic chemicals that have been named on websites and shamed are eliminated. Organic, herbal and natural monikers are popping up. Careful. The FDA states these labels mean nothing and can lead consumers down the wrong path. Still, to care for black beauty, homegrown brands are preferred. More than our fair share of local vloggers and influencers have led us to stores to buy EVOO, raw coconut oil and shea butter for hair and skin needs.

There isn’t a hot blooded male we have asked about Ray C who did not think she was the hottest woman who ever lived in East Africa. Long before EATV was blanketed by E! and binge watching, the incredibly sexy, waist-rotating beauty of Ray C was epic. Then she fell off our radar, other artistes coming up, surpassing her. We all wondered, whatever happened to Ray C? The next time we saw her, she was fresh off an intervention from no less than the (former) head of state of Tanzania Jakaya Kikwete. Clearly it was felt Ray C was a national treasure and she would not be allowed to fade quietly into the night. Her appearance shocked us. Even more stunning was how candid she was. It was drugs that did it. And a choice man or two may have been involved in her fall. Then she was spotted a few weeks back. And we were all atwitter about Rehema Chalamila, 35. Has she changed, again? What is she like? How does she sound? Is she making a comeback? Did she lose the weight….? Well, there was no better way to know than to simply ask. Calls were made. People lined up. And then. Just like that, the brash, tenacious and sexy Ray C bounced back you. And she is very clear about what she wants, who she is, how she will be shot, how she wants her makeup done. Better watch out!

I am a tomboy. I do not like dresses or skirts but I keep it chic and bohemian at all times.

What is your Ray C‘s personal style?

I have been around. Been quiet and not in the industry for six years but I am back on my feet working on my 6th album. Last year’s release Utanimaliza did well.

Technology, the downloading apps, the ‘gram, Snapchat and all the other platforms. Music is now digital. Social media has changed our thinking and way of doing things. We now live for the likes and comments. For us as artists, it is very hard, especially because now our fans feel they know us, our family, friends and spouse or date, where you are, who you are with and can judge us with this information. There is no more longing to see you on TV, listen to your music on radio or watch you perform on stage like there was before. Especially because those were the only options. It is a double-edged sword.

Beauty is the goodness of a woman. The person may not be attractive but they have a good heart. Beauty in a woman is brains. You know what you want, you know how to get it and you get it. I surround myself with real people who are positive and help

Is your music the same as it was? Music is business nowadays. Everything is business. Before an artist had to release an album to be noticed. Now just one song can make you rich and famous. My music has not changed. Well, maybe just a little bit. Back then our videos were shot without make-up. I only did the eye pencil and lip gloss for shine and I was good to go. But now! Make-up and fashion have been emphasised and it has become so complicated when you want to shoot a video. You have to be made-up for interviews. I was not used to that but one has to cope and keep up. My album will be out at the end of the year (2018). Some of the collaborations fans should expect are those I have done with Victoria Kimani, Critical and Papa Dennis (Kenyan gospel artist). I would actually love to do a collaboration with a Nigerian artist. My manager Sadat is now based in Nairobi. It is the reason I am here. Sadat is serious enough to accomplish that.

That is powerful. So, what is next for you after all this love came your way? I want to start an NGO for giving back to the society. Not only for addicts but for everyone going through a problem. I have the Ray C Foundation, Tanzania already. And since Kenya is my second home and as East Africa, we are one, I want to help Kenyans too. I want to share my story with people who are willing to listen to give them hope.

I love watching movies. Not the usual fiction but those based on a true story, inspirational TV shows that give you hope, strength and courage. I have grown and my taste has changed. I love to read inspirational books that make you think critically about your moves in life.

Working out. I swim and workout a lot. It also took a lot of strength and determination. But I love my food. I enjoy going out to nice restaurants but I do not party. Not anymore.

What was your turning point?

God. I was at a point where I was done with life and was contemplating suicide but I could hear a voice say ‘I am not done with you. I will bring along people to help you and lift you up. People you cannot imagine.’ Sure enough, I did get those calls from people urging me on. Telling me not to quit; my mum, Kikwete. Can you imagine the president of the country offering to help you? It was God telling me I am important, this is not you and you have to get better. So I felt if people of that calibre can think of me and want to help me, who am I not to want to help myself. I am so thankful to this day and I now believe more than ever I have a reason to live and I want to find out that reason. Today, I look back and see all I have done and gone through and I am still here. God is not done with me. I have so much to give to my family, my fans (most of my fans) who support me and healed with me. They are real and they are like my family.

Therapy helped me a lot. Sharing is healing and it may give others hope just as it did me. It is good. I wish everyone had therapy. You cannot bottle up everything inside. At least speak to someone you trust or cry. Let it out. Otherwise, it may kill you.

Two years now going on three. Everyone has problems and I do not think of mine as a problem because accepting it as a problem is accepting addiction and I have no regrets. I see it as a way I had to pass through in order to become who I am today. We should give thanks for everything we go through. The bad and the good. I am on a positive mental attitude path. I was breathing then and I still am now. I had God then and I still have him now. That faith keeps me going.I Google myself and see how far I have come, and I thank God. God likes testing you. He gets you through hell to see if you will go back to Him, testing your faith. If you do have faith He comes in and saves you.

FOUNDER’STHEJOURNEY

ART OF SUCCESS:

On 1st October, 2002, 15 years ago, a small ad agency with an peculiar name, opened its door to business, in a global industry that munched local upstarts for lunch and spat them out before dinner. Saracen Media came into existence as the audacious dream of four young ad agency men daring to create Kenya’s first independent media agency.

By Oyunga Pala

The four Saracens were Sammy Thuo, Lenny Nganga, Frank Maina and George Wanjohi. Frank left in the early years to pursue his own ventures. I attempt to deduce that bit of something extra that turned Saracen into a billion shilling company as I sit across from Sammy Thuo, co-founder Saracen OMD, now the second largest media agency in Kenya. The spacious Saracen OMD head offices are located off Kabarisan Drive in the Lavington area of Nairobi. For all its success, Saracen OMD retains an air of understatedness. I witness none of the buzz and flash stereotypical and expected of media Sammyagencies.Thuo’soffice for instance does not look like a billion bucks. On the wall is a framed black and white newspaper article from the Business Daily in 2003. A young Sammy, Lenny and George resemble a geek boy band more than they do the new face of advertising that they were poised to be then. The office is a repurposed single storey family home. Sammy occupies one of the upstairs ensuite bedrooms with wardrobes still intact. We have a scheduled lunch meeting where I get to interview the two other co-founders, Lenny and George. Sammy looks at his watch and ushers me out his office. Time is flying. George, who runs the Ugandan office, is in for a few days. This is the only opportunity I have to get all three in one sitting.

“WE HAD SEEN STARTS UPS COME AND GO. WE DID NOT WANT TO BE CARRIED AWAY IN THE

principles with unflinching ease. George is sociable, gracious and prone to witty and poetic quips. Sammy leans towards a geeky persona, cerebral, forward and proper in Theirspeech.decision to lose sight of the shore and sail into the bloody ocean of business upstarts was triggered by a turning point moment. After almost a decade of experience in the agency business, they encountered a black ceiling. “What is a black ceiling”, I ask out of curiosity. George smiles and Lenny who is a gifted storyteller volunteers to give me some context. “In 2000, in McCann, we decided we wanted to launch a new media agency called Universal McCann with a different P and L. It was quite successful.” By the time they left in 2003, Universal McCann was the biggest lead agency in Kenya. But the year 2000 was a watershed for the trio. That year, the CEO of McCann Global made a promise to Wall Street that they were certain to deliver on a profit. In the third quarter, the profit prospects turned bleak and a moment of panic ensued. All McCann offices were ordered to cut their head count irrespective of whether individual agencies had made a Theprofit.relationship with the seniors deteriorated after that directive. An intrepid French MD named Thierry Dubus resigned shortly afterward and his replacement, an East Asian hired as group account director for the Coke account from Jordan, was promoted to MD before he set foot in Kenya. When he arrived, his first order of business was to put out a staff memo saying no one should have more than two teaspoons of sugar. The new MD’s leadership style was stifling. The situation became untenable and staff said, enough is enough and it culminated in a rebellion. They got a petition signed by everyone, faxed this to London

Lenny and George have known each other since they were five years old in Madaraka estate in Nairobi. Sammy and Lenny met at their first day of work at the Ogilvy and Mather offices in Nairobi in 1994. They later regrouped in McCann and Erickson where they worked together until they took the leap of faith. I find their personalities quite distinct. Lenny has a gentle nature. He is contemplative and talks about his grounding

and then marched into the office and ordered the MD out! However to replace the ousted MD the company brought in the guy who was running McCann Uganda, a man who reported to Lenny became his MD. He just happened to be white. That was the black ceiling and they had to make a call. After that incident the Saracens decided to build something of their own. They drew inspiration from two people who set sail and showed them that there was life outside secure employment. “One was Ndirangu Wa Maina who had been passed over twice and denied a promotion. He left to start Consumer Insight.” The person who replaced Ndirangu was Paul Kukubo. In less than three years Paul quit to go and run 3Mice. “Everyone in a senior position who was black was leaving to go and start their own businesses,” says Lenny. Sammy and George quit shortly afterward but Lenny stayed in employment to finance the equipment for the new business. The first order of business when they started in 2002 was to employ an accountant. “We had seen starts ups come and go. We did not want to be carried away in the event that we got marginally successful as we had seen it happen to other people”. They had much to prove especially as young indigenous Kenyans attempting to claim a significant stake in an industry that was stereotypically fronted by white art directors. Saracen Media then became the first independent media agency not owned by an agency. They were not affiliated to any mainstream agency which was actually a big risk because clients prefered a one stop agency that handled everything from media to creative, client service to PR. Little Saracen was coming up against the big boys like O&M, McCann, Y&R and Century Advertising. It was also new and broke which meant they were quite disadvantaged.

They had find something extra. Since they were small they had to be to faster. Nimbler. Sharper. And with something extra I kept trying to figure out that Sammy calls “Unreasonable optimism.” Unshakable optimism and the fear of failure was their driving force in the early years. For about 6 months, no one earned a salary. They car pooled, counted pennies and knocked countless doors.

“EVERYONE IN A SENIOR POSITION WHO WAS BLACK WAS LEAVING TO GO AND START THEIR OWN BUSINESSES.”

By mid 2004 Saracen had gone through over 15 pitches and not one was selected. They would quickly learn that the industry had its owners. “There was a campaign we pitched, won, and even got an appointment letter yet another agency was given the business,” says Lenny. They had no credit facilities with most media owners and little cash to finance a campaign. The first breaks would come from goodwill. Their solid past reputations brought on board Red Bull, Royal Media Services and Radio Africa with credit facilities. At the end of 2004 their turnover was shy of KES 15 million. The Saracens persisted. New clients started to come on board and would leave impressed by the quality of personalised service. They found work with Cooperative Bank of Kenya, Kenya Revenue Authority, Stanbic Bank and DHL,

The inaugural office was located at Muthaiga Mobil Plaza, Nairobi. It was donated to them by an old client known as Sharad Ghai (since deceased) who would later make a name for himself as the head of the Cricket Kenya and the Kenya Table Tennis Association. Business was hard to come by. Most of the big clients they handled at McCann did not follow them. The first months of business were a case of baptism by fire and it appeared that they may have quite overestimated their prospects. In the month of August 2003, the phones did not ring for the entire month. Not a single client or supplier even called to say, “Hey.”

their crop of early adopters. By 2005, with the future looking significantly brighter for a change, they made the strategic decision to search for a global partner. They approached four major groups and only Omnicom Group responded positively. It lead to an affiliation agreement to create Saracen OMD. In 2007 they became a multinational with a branch office in Uganda. The Tanzanian office opened four years later in Dar es Salaam. By 2009 Saracen OMD had formed a second media agency, Pattison, Hoswell and Durden (PHD). Three years later in 2010, they placed 17th overall in the Small Medium Enterprise (SME) competition organised by KPMG and the Nation Media Group. Another three years later they graduated into Club 101, that elite group of SMEs making a turnover of a billion and above. Another strategic partnership saw the Saracens incorporate a full fledged digital agency, Bean Interactive Ltd., run by Martin Kiarie and Allen Kambuni. Seeing a gap in the creative side of the business, Saracen got into a working relationship with Thomas Omanga and Timla Tieng, founders of Fieldstone Helms, to bolster their strategic creative division.

Let’s recap the breathless growth. Presently what started as an arduous task of three is now Saracen Group: OMD media planning and buying, PHD media planning and buying with a tech advantage, Bean Interactive as digital agency and Fieldstone Helms covering the strategy creative division. Along with their carefully thought out partners they have an agency network footprint trundling throughout Africa in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Benin and Togo. It is now the second biggest agency in the country pushing volumes in excess of KES 3 billion.

Your favourite TV show growing up? Tahamaki. We do not have a local detective series nowadays. I also loved Sanford and Son. The comedy was so witty and Sanford was a riot!

I always get lost in the moment when filming. When a scene I have shot is perfect, I always break out into this funny dance that the team calls ‘The Tosh Dance’. It is sometimes embarrassing, but I have come to embrace it. It’s my thing.

I have always been passionate about showcasing African films on the global stage. That is what drives me. Every day I wake up and ask myself what I as an African

A lot goes into filmmaking. What you see on screen as a consumer is the result of arduous hours or brainstorming and conceptualization, plotting, writing, scouting, casting, editing. A whole lot has to happen even before the camera rolls and I am part of the entire process.

What’s your take on Black Pantherkeeping in mind you are not allowed to diss it…!

I’m not sure how to answer this question without getting political. For me, it just shows us the possibility and the greatness that lies in Africa.

If by that you mean do we have potential to develop our own Hollywood, we definitely do. We have so much talent in this country, so much passion. I believe it can happen.

How would you interpret it?

filmmaker can do to ensure our stories are brought to life.

We definitely are. Never before did we think films like Nairobi Half Life would get made. Shows like Sense 8 that are globally recognized, Watu Wote that received an Oscar Nod, 18 Hours that is yet to be showcased. Our belief in our work is growing not only as filmmakers but our audience is growing with us. I have seen the appreciation of our shows and our movies grow locally and it is encouraging. It is part of what drives us as filmmakers. I always say that my biggest hope is to play my part in changing the culture and appreciation towards the arts in Kenya. We consume more foreign content than local yet we are just as capable of producing strong and visually appealing stories. This is why making films like Disconnect is important.

Do you cast? What is the process?

Tosh is a Kenyan filmmaker passionate about telling our stories to the world and building the Kenyan film industry. I studied marketing at Kenya Institute of Marketing in South C and after that my first job was on the set of Dangerous Affair as a production assistant. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Are you using your marketing skills?

Do you think the our film industry is heading somewhere…to Hollywood maybe? And how come we do better abroad? How can we change that?

I believe it is one of my greatest strengths as a director. I have a thing for people and for matching the right people to the right role. You will see this when you watch the film. I believe a role is only as good as the cast you select to play the same. We usually send out casting calls with a brief description of the role, hundreds of people show up and together with the casting director we make a selection. From that, we have a final call back where the final cast is selected. As for typecast, no, I don’t believe there are. I think it is all about the lens you use to view things.

I believe I am. In some way as long as you have a job or are earning an income, you are inherently a marketer. My marketing skills taught me how to present myself and pitch my ideas. I am able to speak freely to people, pick peoples’ brains... which is essentially where I get a lot of my ideas from.

only as producers of our own content but as distributors. Creating a culture of good Kenyan content, readily available to all at an affordable price. We hope this will make a significant contribution to growing our Iindustry.

I LOVE CAN DO WOMEN AND I AM SURROUNDED BY THEM. THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT A WOMAN WHO PUTS HER MIND TO ACCOMPLISHING SOMETHING AND DOES IT.

There is so much to love about Black Panther, isn’t there? Not only is it a movie that portrays Africa like it never has been before, it just simply shows us, anything we dream is possible. A few weeks ago I saw a #TBT on Instagram The post was Ryan Coogler at a local theatre a few years back, the caption something about how one day, one of his films will be shown at that theatre. Here we are X number of years later celebrating the film that Black Panther is. This movie for me just speaks to our dreams being valid …. and I don’t mean to sound cliché….!

What drives you?

Tells us your story, Tosh.

How was it working on ‘Nairobi Half Life’?

Great segue Tosh. Now that you mentioned it…. Disconnect is a romantic comedy starring Brenda Wairimu and Nick Mutuma and an amazing support cast. It follows the life of two friends navigating the Nairobi dating scene. Everyone aged 18 plus will relate to this film. The story is something we have all been through. What makes this film special is that it’s the first rom com coming out in a big way. We will also be distributing it differently. We have realized a lot of people consume their content online using their phones, laptops iPad etc. We plan to release it online on a platform called KOKO prime. This is our chance to expand scope not

It was an amazing opportunity. One that I will forever be grateful for. I worked with an amazing director that I learnt a lot from; Tom Tykwer, and with a super talented team. I have to say Nairobi Half Life was my big break not only in Kenya but worldwide. I got recognition for it and it played in cinemas worldwide. That’s when people started paying attention to Tosh Gitonga as a director.

What is your definition of beauty in a woman?

Are you a reader?

How do you do to unwind?

A lot is coming up this year. We are going into ideation for our next movie. We are working on a series. I also want to continue working on building KOKO Prime. I like to call it the HBO of Africa. There is a lot to look forward to from Tosh. That’s for sure.

Happily married to my wife Sheila. We have two amazing sons, Chege and Jaha and my daughter, Imani. My kids keep me young and my wife keeps me centred. I love my family.

I'm not a girly girl but I do love my foundation not too much, not a smidge, but just enough. It can get pretty hectic trying to put it on when hubby wants to brush his teeth next to my side of the bathroom mirror. The perfect solution was a designated duty station for me. A vanity table. It made life so much prettier. How does a woman design her dress up and make-up? Where do we start? The dressing room of course. A place you want to spend time and relax. Start with a focal point like a mirror. Either on your armoire, vintage vanity or even a larger-than-life framed mirror. Create a luxurious dressing room with furniture accents and storage. If an expansive walk-in closet is what you desire then consider transforming an existing space. If you've been wondering what to do with that spare bedroom then I think you just found its purpose. It can also be a nook or cranny in your bathroom, your closet, bedroom or even home office. Really any space that you can stake your claim on. Your go-to staples are a vanity table that speaks to your style, accent furniture and plenty of stylish storage for that sleek, luxurious vibe. Invest in organisation bits and bobs that complement the decor and make it easier to find your favourite accessories. An example is a ceramic egg tray or ice cube trays to store earrings. It doesn't get more creative than that!

“Are we in ushago?” my youngest sister wonders as we drive further and further away from Nyali, past the familiarity of the Bamburi Hotel Strip. Lorine, the home’s owner messages to ask whether we have arrived in Mombasa, and repeats some important information to ensure we will be comfortable. Everything is quiet, hot yet calm. We turn off the Mombasa-Malindi Highway, cruising down a winding road, breezing past scissored-leaf palm trees and makuti huts. An occasional breeze temporarily relieves us from the heat which long overwhelmed air conditioning. A chicken crosses the road (no pun intended), and children laze about by the road. To the left is an intrinsic hardwood door leading to the guest washroom; on the right a semi spiral stairway to the upper floor, where a lounge with an L-shaped sofa serves as a quadrangle for lazy conversations or even waiting for fellow travellers to get dressed. On this floor, there is a third Swahili curved double door, made of decorated hardwood and gold plated metal. It opens up to a balcony - the size of a small house - with a magnificent view of the beach and never ending ocean. It seems there is no end to the number of places where we can congregate - or set up for mealtimes.

Kenya’s coastline is roughly 483 km stretching from Lamu to Mombasa in the south. Sandy white in some areas, palm-filed in others, filled with sparkling white coral in others. Majority of visitors to Kenya’s beautiful coastal region choose the more popular areas in the North coast over the more secluded South or islands such as Lamu. Most times, we overlook a spectacular treasure in between - Kikambala, Kilifi County.

It’s easy to get lost in the hullabaloo and novelty. Planning vacations can be so stressful, we forget good holidays need only three special ingredients: love, peace and adventure. Love means you could go by yourself, partner or family as long as you connect with; peace because you are not stretching yourself financially or under pressure and adventure, a place and space outside your comfort zone. Do you have a smell or an itch down there? Perhaps you are terrified if you lean in you will find mossy forests, forgotten babies running around in a game of tap and the car you forgot in the parking lot last Tuesday in 2007.

We get it. Not everyone is into eau de vagina. We can’t imagine why. Sure humans have a less than flowery aromas at the end of the day. Either way the rest of the body does not smell of tropical fruits at that point. And,

The vajayjay is a cool self-lubricating genius. Not only does it secrete a delightfully musky whiff for sexy time, that wetness protects against injury and infection.

Somewhere along the drugstore and supermarket aisles sits a solid shelf of ‘feminine cleansing washes.’ You’ve seen them. Conveniently resting next to the pads and tampons. They all baldly promise a fresh showered feeling down there. Creams, sprays, squirty thingies and inserts telling us how our vaginas are gross hell - deep unseen mysterious chasms of horror, darkness and stench, in dire need of general perking up, scouring, freshening and extra wiping. Our ‘feminine odour’ is much cause for anxiety. Something repulsive. Because the vagina must be the world’s leading

this completely natural state, ladies, is one men are actually attracted to. Not believing this sexy gem of wisdom has led most women down the douche path, mistaking it as the ultimate solution clean. Besides this is douching to wash away menstrual blood, prevent pregnancy after sex and avoid STIs. Yeah. We are not sure about the last two either. An estimated 30% of modern women aged between 15 and 44 have tried vaginal douching. It has to be said if odour is the real problem, get help. Not over the counter either. Self diagnosis is just as bad as douching. It could be a red flag for bacterial

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID):

Complications during pregnancy:

We are talking douche-products here not douche-people, although you might have figured that could be said for them as well. The word ‘douche’ means to wash or soak as a means of washing out the vagina (up inside your flower), not to be confused with the vulva (the external visible petal), with water or mix of fluids. Drugstore and supermarket douche are packaged mixes of water, vinegar, baking soda, garlic or iodine. They come in a tiny bottle or bag and an applicator that squirts the douche upwards into your vagina. This fluid then trickles back through your vagina. Or not.

Other natural remedies for vaginal odor include apple cider vinegar, baking soda, tea tree oil, probiotics, white vinegar and sea salt, garlic, fresh fruit and vegetables, and water. Some other tips to help your vagina smell good include wearing loose clothing and cotton underwear, changing your clothes after exercising, losing weight if necessary,

Should I … ?

The risks of douching:

Now that it is evident the risks outweigh the benefits, here are more risks.

Douching more than once a week makes baby making more difficult. Not because the visual of iodine batting away his sperm is so enticing, but because it increases the risk of ectopic pregnancy. Increased risk of STIs, including HIV. A douche vagina is irritated, less wet and

Let her do the dirty work. She does this naturally by secreting that delicious mucous to rinse away blood, discharge and yes, semen. That being said clean her saucy outsides of with clean warm water when in the shower. The only kind of soap you are allowed to use is very very mild and even then - ONLY on the outside. This is very much sufficient as a practise of good hygiene. Moreso if you shower twice a day. No scented pads. No scented tampons. No talc/baby/scented powders. NEVER ever spray ANY perfume on, at or in your vajayjay. If mother never clarified, always wipe from front to back. No antibacterial/ baby/ scented/any wipes. She, just like every cell in your body, loves water, good food and minimal fuss.

The big take away One, there is nothing wrong with having a vagina, and two, nothing is wrong with the fact that it produces secretions, and finally, there is nothing wrong with the fact that these secretions end up around your girl

Imagine finding out you did this to yourself and it went untreated, and it lead to infertility, or worst case scenario ever, death.

Additionally, all douche formulations – save for a few pure saline varieties – contain ingredients that could trigger an adverse or allergic reaction. The vagina is a self-cleaning organ. You don’t need to stick up some lavender-scented crap up your coochie and swirl it around. If you think you vagina needs redemption during sexy times, my dear ladies, don’t fret; with the “fresh and sexy” wipes we have everywhere, use them beforehand, and once you are done, tidy up that lady business, will you?

No. Doctors say don’t. Also, do not panic. Also, douching is a bad idea. The hoohah is custom-built with a delicate balance of good and bad bacteria. Douching kills it all. Good sweet bacteria, and leaves room for bad, bad bacteria to overgrow. Here is what it does. Increases the risk of infection, pregnancy, and can literally accumulate and waterlog your sacred punani. Now instead of being so fresh and so clean, you are left with the strong fishy odour of a bacterial infection. Also, you know who uses medically-prescribed douches? People who have received gender reassignment surgery and a few other very, very select cases. Of which you are not one.

A weirdly interesting study once revealed drivers get more sun damage, burn and spots and, believe it or not, skin cancer, on the side of the face left open to traffic. Right hand driving countries like ours means the right side of your face sees more action than the partially hidden left. That half of our skin absorbs more than its fair share of UV rays, searing right through the driver’s side window. The damage is cumulative. Invest in a nice block of window tint for protection. It might not be immediately visible but it is a fantastic product that will make a difference to your skin over time.

Living in a city is stressful enough with sky-high rent and slow walkers. When you add never-ending traffic, it is a deadly combo. Driving can ruin your skin in a big way. Between sun exposure and polluted air lies attacked dry rough layers of skin.

Tip 3: Moisturize

COUTURE AFRICA | MOTOR 108 | COUTURE AFRICA

Break out your googly shades. Don’t just save them for Instagram. They add another layer of protection. But wearing dark-tinted sunglasses and wearing eye-cream while driving is not enough. Get legit shades with UVB/UVA protection. Basically, sunscreen for the delicate eye area. This covers your entire eye area and prevents squint lines. In combination with eye treatment it packs a whammy by reducing the appearance of eye bags and wrinkles. Of course depending on your hair you can opt for a visor or hat by protecting your face and, depending on your gear of choice, maybe even look stylish at the same time!

If you have ever swiped a cleanser on your skin at the end of the day you must have wondered - what the heck kinda gunk is

Tip 2: Cleansing is a must

Take skin care routine seriously. Underneath your hardworking SPF 30 has to be moisturiser that meets the needs of your specific skin type. Repeat in the evening, adding a treatment to repair your skin such as a deep penetrating serum and something to lovingly heal your skin as you sleep.; Nighttime is when your skin takes care of itself and thanks you for looking after it. Take your time and massage product on your skin gently. Think of it as having a moment to talk with her, find out what makes her happy. Here is a neat trick. Save some of that awesome product for your hands too. Your skin will thank you. Trust us.

Tip 4: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

this!? Your skin attracts a lot of dirt and dust which accumulates in and on your skin. Environmental damage is real. With the mix of cool interiors and hot sun or drying effects of cold weather, your pores are thrown into confusion. Wash out exhaust fume muck and don’t take your entire day’s worth of shocked face to bed with you. In fact, do it before cozy up with a book, mug, remote or significant other. That way you can nod off smugly.

Use your daily commute to feed your skin and glow with a few smart road tips.

If you are not already doing this, why do you not have drinking water in your car? We don’t mean plastic or bottled mineral water. We are talking serious water bottle accessories here. PET, PVC, PP and other safe plastics, glass, stainless steel, heck even a canteen. Stay hydrated and prevent dry eyes, all the better to see, and plump skin as well as better digestion, what with all that sitting.

Tip 5: Get that tint

ARMOURTRAFFIC

Throw in external hydration by packing a water-based mist in your bag. Spritz it every so often as per instructions and refresh and hydrate your skin.

By Jackline Mukami

Tip 1: Make sunscreen your friend Have you ever thought about of how many years you actually spend in the car? Most of us never think of putting on sunscreen for the road. And we are talking faces here ladies. We are also talking neck, decolletage and hands. Irrespective of the weather, never underestimate the power of sunscreen! Protect your skin by applying sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30. Daily. If there ever was one daytime act of beauty experts agree on, it would be the anti-aging benefits of sunscreen. And you know how our hands and neck do! Spread the sun protecting love on hands peeking over a steering. That, or wear leather gloves like whoa.

Tip 6: Go big on your shades

Maru, 37, is an articulate communicator with a warm aura. Our one on one at the newly openedMövenpick Hotel & Residences Nairobi, 1st in Kenyaand EA, is part of an upscale Swiss group of 85 hotelsin the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Africa.

Leisure trend is slowly stabilizing but there is a new trend in Nairobi for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events). Nairobi is strategically placed between main cities. It is easy to get to by air and being the main hub where you want to hold your exhibition or meetings. It connects people in gatherings, events, meetings as well as businesses. as the main mark in between. The hotel industry is recovering from last year’s election period. The number of tourists coming in has been fluctuating since but the Kenya Tourism Board is investing a lot to emphasize on growing it further.

Why the hotel industry?

What would you wish to change?

COUTURE AFRICA | PROFILE

I always had a passion to work in the hotel industry as I am a people’s person. I feel the hotel industry gives a chance for one to be connected to the guests directly so that you can offer personalized service.

I feel we are very old school. I say this because when I joined my previous job I took a 10-month break from the hotel industry and started doing online projects, handling East, Central and South African region for a complete suite of solutions that included hotel websites, booking engine, business intelligence reports etc. But when I talked about how the booking engines, websites, business intelligence reports, what can be done better to acquire or retain, I could see some clients being hesitant of changes. Yet if you look around, go to Dubai, things have changed. People are becoming more electronic. We are not as fast-paced but we are getting there. In China you book on screens for lunch/dinner bookings. No need to call for lunch or dinner to make a reservation. Parcels can also be delivered by robots. The US has Uber doctors on call too through Uber application. Imagine the fast-paced technology out there that we are still trying to grasp. Therefore, we need to be more receptive to new ideas but not forgetting the personalization as in Africa we carry ‘personalization of service’ excellently. What Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has done differently is it has a group of millennials that are part of the Corporate Executive Committee (ExCom Y). They bring fresh new ideas and present them to the committee once a month. We have one hotel coming up with lobby living room concept which will have a self-check in process. Web check-in is already implemented in some of our hotels where you can check in online and just come collect the key to your room. We have a warmth and talent that if coupled with technology would be booming.

I have friends everywhere in the world and I use it to find out what is happening and share moments and memories. I am a foodie and sometimes share on Instagram or Facebook about the company. Well enough that I don’t want my page to be a sales gimmick.

I started off in a managerial role for Reservations/Revenue. I finally ended up in Front Office Operations but felt something was missing and that I would best fit in Sales and Marketing. in 2011 I moved to greener pastures to another five-star hotel in Nairobi spearheading in Sales and Marketing. In October 2017 I joined Mövenpick Hotel and Resorts as a Director of Sales and Marketing based in Westlands which is opening very soon. Heard of ‘The Secret,’ and the Law of Attraction? I used to go to hotels and see people with name tags on and professionally dressed and passionate about what they do and I thought ‘I could do this, I want to do this’.

I like to have gender balance in my job. I balance out the men and women. I would not be here if I was not given this opportunity by my peers. In my previous job, I had 30 plus associates that I was managing and I still preferred to give women priority for growth and sustainability. I like to promote that equalism.

Yes. My job is my husband.

One mantra/quote you live by?

In your profession how important is social media?

What does beauty mean to you?

We welcome brand names. It is also a learning curve for our female readers. I use Glo Minerals for the face powder or foundation, blush, eye shadow. For the face lotion, clarins is also good.

I feel every human being is beautiful whether from the outside or inside. I mean if you carry yourself well and do a lipstick only you are still beautiful. Beauty, in essence, is in the eye of the beholder but generally is defined by how beautiful you are and whether it is how you dress or carry yourself, you are beautiful. That is it. You carry it so well until people see it in you.

On weekends, I make sure I do my nails, hair, every week, manicure and pedicure. Also, a facial and laser on the face when it is needed. This is a hair removal process. I plan for it once every 3 or 4 months but it also depends on the growth. I am averagely talented when it comes to make-up. I have a close friend who is a make-up artist and I have picked up on a few things. In the morning when I gear up I like to be as neutral and as natural as possible. Over the weekend I may be loud with the lip colour, eye shadow etc.

This is a tough one, as it is always hard to describe yourself. I am a perfectionist, can get easily upset, I love to work with deadlines, I love to wear jewelry and smell good. I am also fun and warm up easily.

First thing when I wake up, I drink a glass of warm water then collect fresh new thoughts for the day before I proceed for a shower. The last thing, I unwind my day by catching up on social media and listening to music.

Which products do you use?

Do you think women who dress well go further than those who do not?

Yes as I think they exude confidence as the first impression always matters.

Describe yourself briefly?

What are you doing as a woman to break the metaphorical glass ceiling?

…embrace the power that resides in the beautiful you.

114 | COUTURE AFRICA

Just think back to the days when you feel you are best dressed. The days when you put on that power suit and your nails are freshly done…and to top it all off you even managed to make it to the salon on Sunday afternoon. You feel like you can walk into any boardroom and take control. You may even find yourself being more assertive and having the confidence to make that call to that prospect because you you’re IT! Who can say no to you?

…the power that resides in the most beautiful you. While physical beauty and/or attractiveness is not everything, it is many things and this, we cannot ignore. One of my most fulfilling tasks as an Image Consultant [and even in my time as a Fashion Stylist] is giving a woman – or a man – a make-over. Suddenly, they stand taller, project their voice with more confidence and hold their head high. It is like watching a person step out of the cocoon that was their past life, as you watch them feel and look like they can take over the world.

The late eighties and early nineties were all about the bimbo beauty. Pretty on the outside with nothing much on the inside. And this was brought out even more with the rise of playboy playmates and the rise and rise of playboy magazine. Smart girls were depicted as plain-Jane librarian types and not to be talked about. Well lucky for you and I, that season is long gone, and in its place comes Beautiful Intelligent Women. We see them everywhere… from TV shows such as Suits and Scandal, to real life Banks,supermodels-turned-business-womencelebratedlikeTyraImanandAjuma.Beautyandbrainsisall the rage right now, so……unleash the power that resides in being the mostbeautiful you.

I hear you thinking, ‘but Olive, I’m really not that beautiful.’ Well to echo Coco Chanel [or Helena Rubinstein], “There are no ugly women in the world, just lazy ones.” I am nit trying to call anyone lazy, but you get my drift. There is a stunning eye-tuner, jawdropper in every woman just waiting to be brought out. It is not superficial. It is definitely not shallow. It is probably the smartest thing you can do.

…there is power that resides in the most beautifulversion of you.
