Protect your joints and prevent pain Joints play vital roles in the human body, forming the connections between bones and facilitating movement. Damage to the joints can be especially painful, and that damage may result from conditions such as osteoarthritis or gout.

While not all joint pain is debilitating, the discomfort of joint pain is such that it’s wise for adults to take steps to protect their joints with the hope of preventing joint pain down the road. Recognizing that joint pain can negatively affect quality of life, the Arthritis Foundation offers the following joint protection tips to men and women.

Get some green in your diet. A healthy diet pays numerous dividends, but many may not know that a healthy diet can help prevent joint pain. Green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale and parsley are high in calcium and can reduce age-related bone loss while also slowing cartilage destruction.

Shed those extra pounds. If you start including more healthy vegetables in your diet, you might just start to lose a little weight as well. Such weight loss also can help your joints, as the AF notes that every extra pound a person gains puts four times the stress on his or her knees. The AF also notes that research has shown that losing as little as 11 pounds can reduce a person’s risk of osteoarthritis of the knee by 50 percent.

Forgo fashion with regard to footwear. When women choose their footwear, fashion should not be their top priority.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, three-inch heels stress the feet seven times more than one-inch heels and heels put additional stress on knees, possibly increasing women’s risk for osteoarthritis. Though heels may be fashionable, the risk of

developing joint pain is not worth making the fashion statement.

· Hit the pool. Swimming is a great full-body workout and can be especially helpful to the

joints. The buoyancy of water supports the body’s weight, reducing stress on the joints and minimizing pain as a result.

If possible, swimmers already experiencing pain should swim in heated pools, which can help relieve pain. While you can still benefit from swimming in pools with colder temperatures, cold water may not soothe the joints like warm water can.

Pain-free Treatment Available for Hemorrhoids

Thanks to a non-surgical procedure called the CRHO’Regan Disposable Hemorrhoid Banding System, patients do not need to suffer in silence from hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women – especially pregnant women – and about half the population will get them by age 50. Hemorrhoids are actually swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus and can be extremely uncomfortable.

For most women, hemorrhoids caused by pregnancy are a temporary problem resulting from the pressure of the fetus on the abdomen, hormonal changes and

pressure on the blood vessels during childbirth. For both men and women, they can be caused by constipation, diarrhea, obesity, heavy lifting, or long periods of sitting.

Most patients only decide to see a gastroenterologist when the bleeding, pain, burning or itching becomes unbearable.

When symptoms do become a problem, the physicians at Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates (AGA) have been trained and certified in the CRH-O’Regan Disposable Hemorrhoid Banding System to offer patients relief. In the past, surgery was frequently recommended to treat internal hemorrhoids. But this method uses a small rubber band to strangulate the base of the swollen vein and cut off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid. Some

patients may need more than one treatment, but they can be spread out a couple of weeks apart.

The procedure itself is minimally invasive and is over 90% effective. Plus, it does not require anesthesia, lasts less than five minutes and is typically performed in the office.

Urogynecology and Gynecology Care

E

very day, millions of women silently wrestle with issues that cause untold embarrassment, inconvenience and discomfort. While many people think that urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse are uncommon issues, affecting only a small number of elderly or disabled women, the truth is that these issues are remarkably common.

In fact, data from Yale University shows that about 35% of women who visit their gynecologist’s office for routine care have urinary incontinence (UI), while 40% experience moderate to severe pelvic organ prolapse.

Prolapse and incontinence frequently occur together.

And, indeed, pelvic floor conditions are more common than hypertension, depression, or diabetes in women.

Yet, if you’re like many women, seeking help for these conditions can be a source of embarrassment or fear - or even hopelessness. The stigma of Ul and other pelvic floor conditions is enough to keep many women from admitting their concerns, even to their own physicians. And living with these conditions can be devastating psychologically, as well as socially, emotionally and physically. The good news is that, while problems like

these are common, they aren’t considered normal or inevitable, regardless of age or health, and many effective forms of treatment are available.

The field of urogynecology is a specialized area of both urology and gynecology that focuses on treating women who are faced with these sensitive issues. Urogynecologists receive extensive training in the treatment of conditions that affect the female pelvic organs, as well as the muscles and connective tissue that support these organs.

Treatment for incontinence and prolapse - protrusion of the bladder or vagina from your body - can be either non-surgical or surgical. The first step in getting help is to see a physician who has experience treating these types of conditions and learn about what may be causing your problem. Your doctor will ask questions about your symptoms and medical history, conduct a physical exam, and discuss with you which tests are appropriate.

Your physical exam may reveal signs of medical conditions that can cause incontinence, like treatable blockages from bowel or pelvic growths. Tests may include an ultrasound, cystoscopy (using a tiny camera to see inside your urethra and bladder), a urinalysis, and urodynamics to measure pressure in the bladder and the flow of urine.

Depending upon your diagnosis, the severity of your symptoms and your overall

health, your physician may recommend conservative, nonsurgical therapies as the first approach to treat your pelvic floor disorder. These include medications, pelvic muscle exercise, lifestyle and dietary modifications, use of a vaginal support device called a pessary, and biofeedback.

If your condition doesn’t improve, your doctor may suggest surgery. Many of the available surgical procedures for incontinence and prolapse are minimally invasive, including some robotic-assisted surgeries that may offer a more effective treatment option. Using tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, your surgeon can operate with greater precision and control, so your recovery is faster and less painful, with a better clinical outcome.

These are just some of the procedures your doctor may consider to treat your incontinence or prolapse.

What is a seborrheic keratosis?

Thanks to education and awareness about skin cancer, more people are taking heed of skin growths and changes and visiting their dermatologists. A spot or mole on the body can be a cause for concern. A seborrheic keratosis is one such type of skin growth that is actually benign but may cause concern due to its appearance.

Seborrheic keratoses, or SKs, are one of the most common noncancerous skin growths, says The Mayo Clinic. Although anyone can get them, they are more common in middle-aged to older adults.

Also known as basal cell papilloma, senile warts or barnacles, these growths form as a common sign of skin aging, according to DermNet New Zealand.

The American Academy of Dermatology says a seborrheic keratosis may seem worrisome because it can look like a wart, a pre-cancerous skin growth or even skin cancer. However, despite their appearance, SKs are harmless.

How do SKs form?

Seborrheic means “greasy” and keratosis means “thickening of the skin.”

Despite the name, SKs are not known to be caused by an abundance of sebum in the skin, nor are they limited to areas of increased oil production. The exact cause of SKs isn’t known, but some doctors feel that an overproduction of skin cells can cause a thickening of the skin in certain areas. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology offers that SKs are most likely hereditary, and they often are found on the trunk of the body and where the face meets the scalp. Sometimes seborrheic keratoses may erupt during pregnancy, following hormone replacement therapy or as a result of other medical problems.

Appearance of SKs Some of these growths have a warty, rough surface, while others look like dabs of warm, brown candle wax on

the skin. ADA says they can range in color from white to black, but most are tan or brown. The appearance of SKs may change as one ages, and it is even possible for them to fall off naturally over time. The Mayo Clinic says that, unless changes include becoming sore or bleeding without healing, there’s little need to act. SKs may form singularly, but often they appear in groups.

Cancer risk?

SKs have no relationship to skin cancer and do not pose a risk to one’s health. Unlike moles, they will not turn into melanoma. The superficial nature of SKs mean they can become irritated by clothing and grow.

Treatment Unless a seborrheic keratosis is in an area that causes constant irritation, there is really no need to seek treatment. However, dermatologists can

remove them quite easily if they are unsightly or uncomfortable. A topical anesthetic, cryosurgery or laser therapy is possible. Generally little scarring is produced, offers AOCD. Although SKs are harmless, their appearance may be similar to skin conditions that are not. Those who are unsure about changes to the skin should always seek the help of a licensed dermatologist.

Participants sought for clinical studies on asthma, depression and other conditions

For every patient who gets relief from a new medicine, they owe a debt of thanks to dozens more who participated in clinical trials to see just how well that new medicine might work. Called the “backbone” of the medical development process for patient treatment, clinical research trials are significant to the medical and pharmaceutical industry because they conduct controlled testing of new medicines, behavioral interventions and medical testing procedures.

The Clinical Research Institute has announced a series of upcoming research studies and is seeking participants in this area. Anyone suffering with asthma, depression, constipation, pediatric irritable bowel syndrome or insomnia is invited to call 678-7825358 to learn more about taking part in studies related to these conditions.

Patient participation is vital to the success of clinical trials since the goals of clinical trials are to produce new and better treatments designed to benefit everyone. Current treatments for cancer had to undergo clinical trials as did flu vaccines and other treatments. Patients with specific diagnoses are encouraged to participate in clinical research trials because their research involvement gives insight on how to better treat everyone with the same diagnosis.

Not only does the research participant receive free treatment and payment for their time, but they know they have made a difference for others who have a similar problem.

Physicians also benefit from being involved in clinical trials because their patients will gain access to the newest medical treatments. More physicians are needed in the growing world of clinical research trials. More trials and specialized treatments require bigger,

more precise patient databases for certain indications and the research world cannot keep up with this growth without more physician involvement. Not only do research physicians received incentives, but they are participating in development for better patient care from the ground level on up.

Another trial is for adolescent major depressive disorder. Depression has many faces. Your child may be eligible to join the research study if he or she is 12-17 years old; has been diagnosed with major depressive disorder or has been having feelings of depression.

The clinical study on insomnia is looking for participants who cannot sleep or stay asleep and will study an investigational drug to see if it may help people stay asleep at night.

A study on asthma is looking for people 12-80 years of age who have severe uncontrolled asthma.

Regenerative medicine offers latest technology to help kickstart patient’s healing process

While this “Atlanta Top Doc” has even been known to get behind the wheel of a race car himself, not all of Dr. Philip Ploska’s patients have such dramatic explanations for their problem hip, knee, back and neck pain. Whether they’ve been thrown off a horse or just dealing with the daily wear and tear on their joints–no matter the cause–relieving that pain is what Dr. Ploska has been doing for his patients since 1994.

The founder of Regenerative Orthopaedics and Spine Institute, with locations in Stockbridge and Griffin, specializes in non-invasive and minimally invasive spine treatment for acute and chronic neck and back pain. In addition, he has specialty training on disc regeneration and disc replacement, as well as offering alternative treatments to joint replacement surgery and minimally invasive joint replacement surgery.

A native of Long Island, N.Y., Dr. Ploska broke his arm when he was five and the next year he broke his leg.

Upon celebrating his graduation from medical school, his mother brought along a paper he had written as a child that read, “I’m going to be a bone doctor when I grow up.”

Indeed, this “bone doctor” achieved his dream and since 2011, he has been one of the “Top Docs” named

by Atlanta Magazine, Dr. Ploska, M.D., FAAOS, is a

nationally renowned board-certified orthopedic surgeon and one of the top orthopedic spine specialists in the metro Atlanta area.

With degrees from Vanderbilt University in mathematics and chemistry, a medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and a residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Virginia, Dr. Ploska specializes in surgical and nonsurgical treatment of disorders of joints and the spine. As a researcher in orthopedics, he has pioneered cuttingedge treatment for orthopedic and spine disorders, such as sacroiliac fusion, mesenchymal cell treatment, also known as regenerative orthopedics and the latest developments in PRP, or platelet-rich plasma to treat a number of musculoskeletal disorders.

In 2015, Dr. Ploska opened Regenerative Orthopaedics and Spine Institute (ROSI) at 203 Medical Boulevard in Stockbridge and then in 2016, he opened a second location in Griffin at 680 South 9th Street.

He opened ROSI with the commitment of creating an atmosphere in which patients could be treated like family and not just a number.

“My philosophy is everyone gets treated with respect,” Dr. Ploska said. “It’s a loving environment. The way I want to care for people is I try to care for them like they’re my family. I just think that’s how people ought to be treated.”

For this “family” of patients, Dr. Ploska offers the latest technology and techniques to treat their specific problems at ROSI’s Spine Institute and Joint Center.

Regenerative medicine is among that latest technology and is the research in tissue engineering and molecular biology that deals with the process of replacing, engineering or regenerating human cells, tissues or organs to restore or establish normal function.

“We do patients’ own stem cells,” Dr. Ploska said, adding however, that as a person ages, their harvested stem cells become less potent. As a result, among its

treatments, ROSI uses amniotic tissue injections that contain stem cells from the umbilical cord. Stem cells obtained from the umbilical cord and amniotic fluid can be used in injections to aid in healing damaged tissue naturally and relieve pain from injuries of the knees, elbows, shoulders and ankles with a shorter recovery time. In addition, platelet rich plasma injections can use the blood from the patient by separating platelets in a centrifuge. The platelets can then be re-injected into the injured area, releasing growth factors that promote healing tissue naturally.

Dr. Ploska has served as the orthopedic surgeon for the PGA Tour, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and the American Le Mans Race Seriessomething he did for 12 years. He is a former race car driver himself, having raced for a company out of San Francisco, Calif., and competed in races in Montreal, Brazil, Miami and other locations. Dr. Ploska is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the Atlanta Orthopaedic Association.

In addition, Dr. Ploska often travels nationally and internationally to train other orthopedic surgeons.

Joining Dr. Ploska at ROSI is Dr. Steven P. Rayappa, M.D., an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Rayappa completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Albany Medical Center in New York, in addition to a fellowship in sports medicine at the Miami Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Institute. Dr. Rayappa previously served as the assistant team physician for the Miami Heat, Miami Dolphins and the Florida International University football team. He also provided medical services at the FedEx Orange Bowl, Miami Beach Bowl and the NCAA MAAC Tournament.

His clinical specialties include knee, hip and shoulder surgery; arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery; sports medicine; orthopedic trauma; general fracture care and regenerative medicine.

A native of Queens, N.Y., Dr. Rayappa said he enjoys what he does because he sees immediate results.

“The nice thing about orthopedics is that you see tangible results and can help people regain their life,” he said. “...I like to use a team approach when I evaluate a new patient. I try to identify their problem and the various ways, surgical or non-surgical to help them get back. I like to get them back to their desired level of activity. Working with professional athletes to weekend warriors or a person with normal wear tear, we assess their goals and help them achieve it through whatever means possible.”

He said the evolving field of regenerative medicine is of particular importance.

“It’s an alternative to surgery when patients don’t want to go under the knife,” Dr. Rayappa said. “The results are very promising...It helps the patient’s own body regenerate and kickstart healing of their ailment.”
