How to finance long-term care needs Failing to plan for long-term care expenses may leave aging men and women with little or no assets late in life. AARP says that the cost of long-term care continues to rise and the array of options can make it difficult for families to find the best, most affordable care.

The median monthly costs for a semiprivate room in a U.S. nursing facility hovered around $6,800 in 2016, according to The Genworth Cost of Care Survey. That adds up to roughly $82,000 per year. Individuals who only anticipate hiring a home health aide should know that such options cost an average $3,800 per month.

Retirement savings can quickly dry up when long-term care is required. Individuals need to keep in mind that, in 2014, the Social Security Administration said the average month retirement income from Social Security was just $1,294. The National Care Planning Council says that at least 60 percent of all individuals will need extended help during their lifetimes.

Cancer screenings men should consider

C

ancer screenings play an important role in cancer prevention. Screenings may not prevent people from getting cancer, but they can detect the presence of cancer before a person begins to experience any signs or symptoms.

Screenings also can help doctors catch cancer before it metastasizes, or spreads, to areas of the body outside the area where it originated.

Many women get routine mammograms to detect for breast cancer, but women are not the only ones who should include cancer screenings in their healthcare routines. Men also can benefit from screenings, discussing the pros and cons of each with their physicians during routine health examinations.

· COLON CANCER: Men should begin getting screened for colon cancer at age 50, though those with family histories of colon cancer or other colon issues should begin even earlier, as family history increases a man's risk of developing colon cancer.

Colon cancer screenings may discover a type of growth known as a polyp, which is typically benign and can be removed before it develops into cancer.

The American Cancer Society notes that men have various options to choose from with regard to screening for colon cancer. Such options include a colonoscopy, a stool DNA test and a camera pill.

Speak to your physician about these options and discuss your family history, which will influence how frequently you need to be screened for colon cancer. · LUNG CANCER: Screening for lung cancer is most important for men who currently or recently smoked. The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends annual screening for lung cancer with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) for

men between the ages of 55 and 80 who have a 30 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. Screening should be discontinued once a man has not smoked for 15 years or has developed a health problem that substantially limits a man's life expectancy or his ability or willingness to undergo curative lung surgery.

(Note: Pack-year history is calculated by multiplying the number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day by the number of years the person has smoked.) The ACS notes that the risks associated with lung cancer screenings typically outweigh the benefits for men who have never smoked or quit long ago.

· PROSTATE CANCER: The National Cancer

Institute notes that prostate cancer is the most common nonskin cancer among men in the United States. Being 50 years of age, black and/or having a brother, son or father who had prostate cancer increase a man's risk of developing the disease. The NCI notes that screening tests for prostate cancer, which include a digital rectal exam and a prostatespecific antigen test, come with risks, and men should discuss these risks and the potential benefits of prostate cancer screenings before deciding to be screened.

Cancer screenings can detect cancer in its earliest stages, and as men get older, they should discuss their screening options with their physicians.

Should You Be Worried About

Frequent Heartburn?

I

t is common to experience a little heartburn after eating spicy foods or drinking alcohol. It may feel like chest pain or burning after eating, a sour taste in the back of the throat or hoarseness. But suffering daily, long-lasting or frequent heartburn symptoms should not be ignored and may indicate a more serious condition.

As many as 15 million Americans suffer from daily heartburn, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This chronic but treatable condition refers to irritation and damage to the lining of the esophagus from

prolonged exposure to stomach acid. This damage occurs because of a weakening of the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach which allows acid to leak up into the esophagus.

Typical treatments for GERD may include medication to reduce stomach acid and simple lifestyle changes to help reduce the reflux symptoms – such as avoiding trigger foods, decreasing portion sizes, losing weight, quitting smoking, elevating the head of the bed, and not eating before bedtime.

For certain patients who have had chronic acid reflux, an upper

endoscopy may be recommended to assess severity and to uncover any pre-cancerous changes. If GERD is left untreated or unmonitored for a long period of time, it can result in a condition called Barrett’s esophagus which can progress to cancer.

Barrett’s esophagus is a disorder in which the inflamed, acid-damaged cells in the lining of the lower esophagus change to resemble those found in the stomach. As a result of this transformation, Barrett’s patients have an increased risk for esophageal cancer.

Urogynecology and Gynecology Care

E

very day, millions of women silently wrestle with issues that cause untold embarrassment, inconvenience and discomfort. While many people think that urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse are uncommon issues, affecting only a small number of elderly or disabled women, the truth is that these issues are remarkably common.

In fact, data from Yale University shows that about 35% of women who visit their gynecologist’s office for routine care have urinary incontinence (UI), while 40% experience moderate to severe pelvic organ prolapse.

Prolapse and incontinence frequently occur together.

And, indeed, pelvic floor conditions are more common than hypertension, depression, or diabetes in women.

Yet, if you’re like many women, seeking help for these conditions can be a source of embarrassment or fear - or even hopelessness. The stigma of Ul and other pelvic floor conditions is enough to keep many women from admitting their concerns, even to their own physicians. And living with these conditions can be devastating psychologically, as well as socially, emotionally and physically. The good news is that, while problems like

these are common, they aren’t considered normal or inevitable, regardless of age or health, and many effective forms of treatment are available.

The field of urogynecology is a specialized area of both urology and gynecology that focuses on treating women who are faced with these sensitive issues. Urogynecologists receive extensive training in the treatment of conditions that affect the female pelvic organs, as well as the muscles and connective tissue that support these organs.

Treatment for incontinence and prolapse - protrusion of the bladder or vagina from your body - can be either non-surgical or surgical. The first step in getting help is to see a physician who has experience treating these types of conditions and learn about what may be causing your problem. Your doctor will ask questions about your symptoms and medical history, conduct a physical exam, and discuss with you which tests are appropriate.

Your physical exam may reveal signs of medical conditions that can cause incontinence, like treatable blockages from bowel or pelvic growths. Tests may include an ultrasound, cystoscopy (using a tiny camera to see inside your urethra and bladder), a urinalysis, and urodynamics to measure pressure in the bladder and the flow of urine.

Depending upon your diagnosis, the severity of your symptoms and your overall

health, your physician may recommend conservative, nonsurgical therapies as the first approach to treat your pelvic floor disorder. These include medications, pelvic muscle exercise, lifestyle and dietary modifications, use of a vaginal support device called a pessary, and biofeedback.

If your condition doesn’t improve, your doctor may suggest surgery. Many of the available surgical procedures for incontinence and prolapse are minimally invasive, including some robotic-assisted surgeries that may offer a more effective treatment option. Using tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, your surgeon can operate with greater precision and control, so your recovery is faster and less painful, with a better clinical outcome.

These are just some of the procedures your doctor may consider to treat your incontinence or prolapse.

DR. GERALD BOHN WELCOMES PATIENTS AT PRIMARY CARE ASSOCIATES

W

hen a patient stops by Dr. Gerald Bohn's office, chances are he knows about their children and grandchildren and enjoys hearing about the family's latest trip to the beach. The long-time Griffin physician said he likes to treat his patients as people — not just his first sore throat of the day.

Dr. Bohn makes a special point to get to know his patients and for almost three decades, the internal medicine specialist has been a favorite doctor for generations of people in the region.

He has also been recognized numerous times for his work and profession.

A native of Atlanta, Dr. Bohn has been peer-nominated for four years as one of the Top Physicians in America.

It takes 10 physician nominations to achieve such an honor. For 28 years, Dr. Bohn was in private practice at Internal Medicine of Griffin. As the former chief of medicine and then chief of staff for Spalding Regional Medical Center, Dr. Bohn was anticipating retirement just a short while ago.

“Two years ago, I thought I retired,” he said. “But then my wife of 45 years died Thanksgiving Day.” Dr. Bohn was devastated at the loss of his wife, Robin, who had been district director of the American Red Cross.

He describes her death as leaving him “pretty much fogged in” for the next few months.

“But then Navicent called me out of the clear blue sky,” Dr. Bohn said. “They said, 'Do you want to do this primary care practice in Locust Grove?'”

As part of the Navicent Health Physician Group, Primary Care Associates is now open in Suite 200 at 4600 Bill Gardner Parkway in Locust Grove. This practice is a part of Navicent's new primary care network, which is called Primary Care Associates and consists of a family medicine residency program and regional primary care practices.

Primary Care Associates will be the anchor for Navicent's medical neighborhood at Locust Grove and is intended to provide high quality medical services for all members of the family.

When Navicent called him, Dr. Bohn said he was ready to go back to work.

He brings more than 30 years of medical experience and expertise to Primary Care Associates in Locust Grove.

Growing up on the northside of Atlanta, Dr. Bohn said he was always interested in medicine. Two of his sisters are registered nurses.

“I just always wanted to be a doctor,” he said.

Dr. Bohn graduated in 1969 from Atlanta's St. Piux X High School. He enrolled at Furman University in South Carolina where he played varisty football for the Furman Paladins, was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and received his bachelor of science degree.

After Furman, Dr. Bohn enrolled at the Medical College of Georgia where he was a Dean Scholar graduate and then completed his internship and residency at Atlanta Medical Center. After completing his residency, Dr. Bohn went to Tanzania, Africa, where for two years he worked in a medical missions hospital. He came back home and began

private practice at Internal Medicine of Griffin and there he would remain for 28 years.

During those years, Dr. Bohn and his late wife went on numerous medical mission trips with churches and organizations. First Baptist of Griffin is the home church for the Dr. Bohn family.

The doctor is proud of his two sons and enjoys his seven grandchildren, with an eighth grandchild now on the way. Son Jonathan holds an MBA from Furman University, where he played on the varsity rugby team and is now a businessman who owns a jewelry store in Charleston, S.C. Son Aaron is an honors graduate of Auburn University and now a fighter pilot with the 75th fighter wing of the U.S. Air Force — the current group that is the namesake of the famous Fighting Tigers. He has been on multiple deployments to the Middle East. When he is not busy working or keeping up with his sons and growing group of grandchildren, Dr. Bohn enjoys spending time outdoors.

Right now, the doctor is especially looking forward to getting to know the patients who come to see him at Primary Care Associates in Locust Grove.

He has special interest and expertise in risk factors to include diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol management.

How to reduce damage to eyes resulting from prolonged screen time

ccording to a 2015 report published in the Daily Mail, many people spend more time on their devices than they do sleeping. A recent Nielsen Company audience report also found that adults in the United States devote about 10 hours and 40 minutes each day to consuming media on their personal computers, tablets, multimedia devices, TVs, and more.

Researchers continue to study the effects of screen time on personal health, but there is reason to believe that screen time may be especially harmful to vision. Devices force the eyes to focus at near range, and over time that can have an adverse effect on vision.

Prevent Blindness America says that eye fatigue, dryness and blurred vision are some of the common effects of prolonged screen use, but these are not the only concerns. Digital devices also expose the eyes to blue light. While research as to how blue light impacts vision is ongoing, there is concern over

the long-term effects of screen exposure since these screens are in close proximity to the eyes and use is often prolonged. Prevent Blindness America says that studies suggest continued exposure to blue light over time can lead to difficulty focusing, premature aging of the eyes and even damage to retinal cells.

A recent study by the National Eye Institute found the frequency of myopia, also known as near-sightedness, has increased exponentially in the last few years. Reasons include a spike in time spent looking at things close-up and a lack of outdoor activities that require focusing elsewhere. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that a separate study recently found that excessive screen time usage in adolescents was associated with development of acute onset esotropia, or crossing of the eyes, and that limiting usage of gadgets decreased the degree of eye crossing in these patients.

Eyes, just like any other muscle, require a varied workout to remain healthy. Many vision experts rec-

ommend the 20-20-20 rule. According to this rule, for every 20 minutes of looking at a screen, a person should look away at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds or more. This will help eye muscles to relax.

The group All About Vision says to use proper lighting, such as ambient lighting. Position a computer monitor so that windows or lights are to the sides instead of in front or behind it. Be sure indoor light isn't too bright, as bright light can contribute to glare and fatigue.

Antireflective lenses on eyeglasses or filters for screens also can help absorb some of the blue light and limit how much reaches the retina and accesses the central nerve of the eye. This may alleviate digital eye strain as well. Screen users may want to adjust the display of their devices so they feature a cool, gray tone, which produces less glare.

Eyes can be adversely affected by screen time unless strategies are implemented to limit strain and to rest muscles.

Sunburn and skin cancer What is sunburn?

Sunburn occurs when the DNA in skin cells has been damaged by UV radiation. Many people associate sunburn with skin that peels or blisters, but any skin that turns pink or red in the sun has been sunburnt.

Am I always vulnerable to sunburn?

S

unburn can be a painful, unsightly consequence of too much unprotected time spent in the sun. But sunburn is more than just a temporary nuisance. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, sunburn can cause long-lasting damage to the skin and increase a person’s risk of developing skin cancer.

Sunburn tends to be so common, particularly during the warmer months of the year, that many people may consider it a

relatively harmless byproduct of spending time outside under the sun. But the United Kingdom-based charitable organization Cancer Research UK notes that getting painful sunburn just once every two years can triple a person’s risk of developing melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. A better understanding of sunburn and its relationship with skin cancer may encourage more people to prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun.

Though many people may only get sunburns on hot days, that’s not because the skin is not susceptible to sunburn year-round.

In fact, sunburn can occur any time of year because it’s caused by ultraviolet radiation, which has nothing to do with the temperature.

Many people only spend time outdoors on hot days; hence, the reason they may only suffer sunburn in late spring and summer. Since sunburn can occur at any time of year, it’s imperative that skin is covered up and sunscreen is applied regardless of what time of year a person is enjoying the great outdoors.

Am I out of the woods once my skin peels?

People who have experienced sunburn may have noticed their skin peeling in the days after they were burned, though not every sunburn victim’s skin peels. Peeling is how the

body rids itself of the damaged cells that can lead to cancer. But just because a sunburn victim’s skin peels post-sunburn does not mean that person has necessarily dodged the skin cancer bullet. Some damage may remain after skin peels, and that remaining damage can still make sunburn sufferers vulnerable to skin cancer.

I’ve been sunburned. Now what?

A sunburn, even a particularly bad sunburn, does not guarantee a person will develop skin cancer. But frequent sunburns increase a person’s risk of the disease, so people who have been sunburned, whether it’s just once or several times, should revisit what they’re doing to protect their skin before going back out in the sun. Wearing protective clothing, including long sleeve shirts and protective hats, and applying strong sunscreen with a minimum sun protection factor, or SPF, of 30 are just a couple of ways to protect skin from sun damage.

FAMILY MEDICINE

Which doctor to see and when Women who split their health management among different doctors may not know which doctor to turn to when their health comes into question. They may ask themselves, "Is this issue best addressed by a family doctor or a gynecologist?" Answers to such questions depend on personal preferences and the type of condition you're looking to treat.

Family doctors or general practitioners may be qualified to provide many of the screenings and services for which a woman may visit a gynecologist or women's health practice. Such doctors can perform routine pelvic examinations, oversee screenings for cervical cancer and conduct breast exams to check for lumps and other abnormalities, just like a woman's specialty doctor may run tests to calculate body mass index or check for cholesterol levels.

The following information can help women determine which doctor to see when certain situations arise.

• Annual physicals: Gynecologists and family doctors can conduct physical examinations. Both can order blood lab tests and urinalysis to check cholesterol levels and for any vitamin deficiencies. Heart rate, blood pressure,

weight, and height are other screenings that can be handled at either office.

• Colds and coughs: In theory, a gynecologist may be able to diagnose and treat common health ailments. But the majority of a gynecologist's work concerns the female reproductive system, so common colds and coughs are best left to general practitioners who diagnose respiratory and bronchial conditions daily.

• Nutrition and weight loss: Many patients see a family doctor to seek advice on adopting a healthy diet.

Some medical offices have a nutritionist on staff who can offer food counseling and exercise advise.

• Cancer screening: PAP tests and breast exams can be performed at either doctor's office, although patients may feel more comfortable if a gynecologist performs these screenings.

It is important to note that not all gynecologists are obstetricians. Some handle women's reproductive issues but do not deliver children. Patients who prefer a doctor knowledgeable about reproductive health and won't be busy handling child deliveries should select a gynecologist.

Physical therapy a vital part of treatment and recovery

llnesses of the musculoskeletal system can result in temporary loss of mobility. But physical therapy can help to prevent those temporary problems from becoming permanent.

The American Physical Therapy Association says physical therapists diagnose and treat individuals of all ages who have conditions that limit their abilities to perform functional activities. Limitations in mobility may result from injury or illness or be present at birth. Many physical therapists develop a plan to reduce pain and restore function through various treatment techniques with the ultimate goal of restoring a patient’s functional independence.

Physical therapists employ various physical modalities to help with certain conditions. For example, a patient may be asked to perform various range-ofmotion exercises to restore function to an injured part of the body. Physical therapists also may use heat, cold and electrical impulses to reduce pain and stimulate muscle function. Physical therapy sessions frequently include some form of

massage as well.

Physical therapy may work in conjunction with other treatments for cardiopulmonary disease. The cardiopulmonary system delivers oxygen to active tissues, which plays an important part in movement. When the cardiopulmonary system is compromised, muscles and other tis-

sues may not function as they should, and certain exercises and mobility therapies may be needed. Physical therapists also aid in improving physical ailments related to neurological diseases, such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Physical therapists

may also help treat poor vision, poor balance and paralysis.

Very often physical therapy will be recommended by a general doctor or an orthopedic surgeon as part of recovery from a surgery or a condition. The therapist may work in conjunction with another doctor to provide a program that helps foster a faster and safe recovery.

Physical therapy tends to begin gradually and resistance is slowly built up as the body strengthens. The length of physical therapy will depend on the condition and the recommendation of the therapist and doctors overseeing the treatments.

Children who have learning disabilities related to a neurological or physical condition may benefit from certain forms of physical therapy. For example, vision problems can compromise academic performance, so physical therapy that aims to enhance visual tracking skills and strengthen the eyes in conjunction with corrective lenses may help students perform better in the classroom.

Exercise benefits both the mind and body. Study after study indicates how physical activity can reduce the propensity for illness, boost mood, lower stress levels, and much more. Still, certain people find it difficult to muster the motivation to get up and move.

In 2013, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed data from more than 450,000 American adults ages 18 and older who were randomly polled across the 50 states. Participants were asked about aerobic physical activity outside of their jobs. The findings were eye-opening. Estimates indicated nearly 80 percent of American adults do not get the recommended amounts of exercise each week. People most likely to

Wasting time on activities that you don't enjoy may cause you to throw in the towel prematurely. Don't base fitness choices around what worked for others; find things that work for you. Exercise physiologists at John Hopkins Weight Management Center say to start with an activity that you already enjoy, even if it's aligned with the trend of the moment. Chances are you can find a class or make up a routine that works for you.

who were in the competitive groups in a study of 800 graduate and professional students at the University of Pennsylvania went to 90 percent more classes than those who exercised independently or were not competitive. The results were published in the journal Preventative Medicine Reports.

Competition can be a driving factor in efforts to exercise.

4. Head outdoors.

You may be more inclined to workout if you do so outside. Activities such as hiking, snowshoeing, swimming, and cycling on natural courses can be inspiring and burn calories.

5. Try sports or another activity.

Exercise regimens do not have to include running on a treadmill or lifting weights. All types of activities can work, and some may be more enjoyable to you than traditional exercises. Everything from martial arts to dance classes to volleyball can offer cardiovascular and muscle-building benefits in a fun atmosphere.

Making exercise fun motivates many people to embrace fitness and stick with their workout regimens.
