Volunteers are needed to make O’Fallon shine on “Make a Difference Day” O’Fallon-area scout troops, churches, families, clubs and neighborhood organizations and individuals, too, are invited to join in a fun morning of participating in National Make A Difference Day on Saturday, Oct. 25. “National Make A Difference Day is the largest single day of service, with people all over country coming together to make their community a better place,” said Kathy Halstead, O’Fallon’s Volunteer Services manager. In O’Fallon, this year’s projects include, but aren’t limited to, putting a shine on O’Fallon’s Veterans Memorial Walk, mulching trees and flower beds and tidying assigned areas in City parks, and collecting trash along O’Fallon roadsides and creeks. “Creek cleanups are our biggest and one of our most important service projects, and we would like to expand our outreach this year with more volunteers,” said Halstead. “Along with protecting our water quality, creek cleanups help keep wildlife safe by preventing plastics and other trash from washing downstream into our rivers and eventually even the ocean. Kids, especially, enjoy these cleanups, which makes them a good family, troop or church activity. And kids love to pose for a photo next to the debris they’ve collected.”
Families looking ahead to additional volunteering opportunities this fall are encouraged to sign up for National Family Volunteer Day, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22. “We’ll be needing help with sorting and boxing donations to the Cornucopia of Care Food Drive, which helps local food pantries,” said Halsted. “More projects may be developed as the number of people who sign up increases. We pre-register our volunteers so that we can make sure that we have all the supplies and equipment needed for volunteers to pitch in.” Family Volunteer Day, which began over 20 years ago, is a day of service that demonstrates and celebrates the power of families who volunteer together, supporting their neighborhoods, communities and the world. To join in O’Fallon’s Make A Difference Day, or to register for National Family Volunteer Day, contact O’Fallon’s Volunteer Services Department at 636.379.5417, or volunteer@ofallon. mo.us. Or visit www.ofallon.mo.us/volunteer. For more than 20 years Make A Difference Day—the nation’s largest day of community service—has been doing just that in communities across the county. Make A Difference Day is a cele-
bration of neighbors helping neighbors. Millions of volunteers from across the nation will unite in a common mission to improve the lives of others on Make A Difference Day, Saturday, Oct. 25. The stories that grow from Make A Difference Day show that anyone—regardless of age, location or resources—can accomplish amazing things when they take on the problems they see in their community.
