A mother and a community come together to honor Luke Maue’s memory By Robyn Dietrich and Angie Maue Do you remember where you were on May 18, 2001? Angie Maue remembers with vivid detail. She was on a first grade field trip with her 7 year old son at the St. Louis Zoo. Standing in front of the Zoo entrance, Angie, along with all of her son’s classmates and dozens of other children on field trips that day, witnessed her beautiful, innocent son, Luke Taylor Maue, get hit and killed by a drunk, underage driver. This tragedy is one that the community has never forgotten. When a child is taken from us in such a meaningless way, it makes us all wonder what we can do to make the world a safer place. On what should have been a day to remember, the community was violated and a mother came home from a school field trip without her son. Today, the work Angie is doing will not let Luke’s memory be forgotten. Luke’s friends, family, and community have pulled together to celebrate Luke’s memory and to raise awareness of the consequences of driving drunk and underage drinking. On Sunday, Sept. 21, the fourth annual Hope 4 Tomorrow Run will take place at Lutheran High School, 5100 Mexico Rd. in St. Peters. It will consist of a 1 mile run/walk, a 5k, and a new 21k.

The 21k will be a three man team, with each running 7k, to represent the age at which Luke died and together, represent the age he should be today. The idea for Runners 4 Luke started on his 16th birthday, with friends and family entering the St. Michael’s Day Dash to raise money for Backstoppers. On his 17th birthday, they ran and raised money for Chad’s Coalition. In 2010, Luke’s Legacy formed and started hosting the Hope 4 Tomorrow 5K and 1 mile MADD Dash in remembrance of Luke’s 18th birthday. The run is held at the Lutheran High School, where Luke would have attended. Each year the run grows, raising more and more money for awareness campaigns. The last three years have raised close to $10,000 for the Gateway Affiliate of MADD. This year, the run will be held on what would be Luke’s 21st birthday. The run will start at 8 am. Register online at http://lukes-legacy.org, and join in the “Hope 4 Tomorrow” mission. Luke’s Legacy is now a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization. The mission is simple: eliminate drunk driving, prevent underage drinking and educate our community. For the past 12 years, Angie has spoken at area high schools, sharing her story and carrying out the mission of Luke’s Legacy and MADD. “We

have to be his voice, the voice that was silenced that fateful day in May of 2001.” Luke’s Legacy will also be developing a program called Luke’s Army. The concept will be to educate children from junior high through high school on the consequences of underage drinking and drunk driving, enlist them in Luke’s Army, and equip them so they want to be safe and sober drivers.
