Celebrate our country’s freedom with free music, fireworks and more at O’Fallon’s Heritage & Freedom Fest By Thomas Drabelle From the thrill of high-flying carnival rides, the free concerts by nationallyknown bands to the spectacular fireworks bursting over the city, O’Fallon’s 2014 Heritage & Freedom Fest on July 2 - 4 aims to be the best celebration of America’s birthday in St. Charles County – and it’s free. The festival opens at 5 pm on Wednesday, July 2, with Family Night, featuring a colorful carnival and midway. Kids and adults can enjoy unlimited gravitydefying rides with a $20 wristband. Or, play in the midway and enjoy great food. On July 3 - 4, the party ramps up with free concerts by nationally-known bands, fantastic fireworks each night, Kids’ Zone activities, family-friendly sideshows, and shuttle rides to the festival entrance – all free. Festival food for sale will include traditional favorites like barbecue and kettle corn or, for the more adventurous, alligator on a stick and chocolate- dipped bacon. Thursday, July 3, get your country on with singer-songwriters Chris Cagle and J.T. Hodges. Chris Cagle’s hits celebrating love and living the country life include I Breathe In, I Breathe Out, Miss Me, Baby, Laredo, and Got My Country On. JT Hodges made country music air-

waves in 2011 with his hit single, Hunt You Down, and his nominated for the 2011 Academy of Country Music “New Artist of the Year” award. On Friday, get your Independence Day celebration off to a patriotic start at 9:30 am with a patriotic parade that heads north on Main Street from downtown O’Fallon, then east on Tom Ginnever to the festival grounds. After the parade, the festival gets rockin’ with Switchfoot, Survivor, and BoDeans all performing live on the Main Stage. After early success on the Christian rock scene and winning a Grammy for “Best Rock Gospel Album” for Hello Hurricane, alternate rockers Switchfoot gained mainstream recognition with The Beautiful Letdown featuring the runaway hits Meant to Live and Dare You to Move. Survivor’s arena rock sound caught the ear of Sylvester Stallone, who commissioned Eye of the Tiger as the theme song for his movie, Rocky III. Topping all charts at #1, the song won a Grammy and an Oscar. And, BoDeans bring a unique brand of all-American “roots rock” music to the lineup, fusing blues, rock, country and soul into one sound. Opening the festival on the Fourth at 1 pm, My Friend Mike gets the party going with the latest Top 40 hits and classic

Motown, country and rock covers. Look for additional activities and entertainment, including free activities in the Kids’ Zone with giant inflatables, games, face-painting and crafts. Plus, don’t miss all of these free sideshows for the whole family: - FAME racing on a radio-controlled (R/C) Micro Reality Race Track. All ages are welcome to race the 1/10-scale stock See HERITAGE & FREEDOM FEST on page 2
