During the 10-days of continuous outdoor painting, artists capture the landscape on canvas right before the eyes of onlookers.

A 10-day festival celebrating the beauty of local landscape By Kathryn Frazier Spring sunshine, rain, and local hospitality attract over 100 Plein Air Artists from Missouri and all around the Midwest to celebrate spring and participate in the 12th Annual Plein Air Art Festival. Artists from all backgrounds from beginner to experienced are welcome to enjoy all or part of the festival. The event has grown to ten days of painting in magnificent settings with $500 awards at each of the ten venues. The committee has designed an exciting festival that offers a versatile outdoor schedule that is inviting and fun for the artists as well as the public. The outdoor painting event, now in its 12th year, is both a celebration of the local landscape and a coming together of people who appreciate all of its beauty, some local, but many from across the Midwest. Plein air, which is French for “open air,” offers something that no other venue can, said Kessler, co-chair of the event along with Robin White, Katy Bike Rentals in Defiance. “You will have an opportunity to see the artist create something from start to finish,” she said. “They start with a blank canvas, and most are finished within two to four hours.” Local artists are welcome to participate, whether they are novices or experienced painters, said Kessler. Everyone else is encouraged to come and watch the artists at work. At the end of each day’s paint time, the artwork is judged and the first-place piece is purchased by the day’s sponsor. The rest of the artwork is then available for sale to

anyone who is interested. This year’s Augusta Plein-Air Festival begins on Thursday, April 24, with a “quick paint” event at Nobeleis Winery. From there artists will move to the Augusta Shores neighborhood for a Paint Out beginning at 6am. Judging will be at 5pm. The festival continues daily through May 4 with a number of similar events at various wineries and venues. Uncorked 100K added to Plein Air Festival this year. Augusta to St. Charles to Augusta There are a couple of interesting additions to this year’s lineup, including an Uncorked 100K on Saturday, April 26, which invites artists to capture a combination of traditional plein-air landscape and figurative art (runners). The four-person relay run will begin at Mount Pleasant Estates in Augusta, travel along the historic Katy Trail to the St. Charles Family Arena and end with a party back at the Mount Pleasant Estates (learn more at uncorked100. com). As the runners cross the finish line in the evening at Mount Pleasant Estates, artists will complete their pieces and have their day’s work on display. Art judging will begin at 7:30pm and the festivities will continue until 9pm. That same day April 26, children will be invited to participate in a Paint Out at Montelle Winery beginning at 10am. This event includes a lunch buffet, and reservations are encouraged. Awards will be given by age groups: 4-6; 7-9; 10-12 and 1316. Winners will be announced at 1pm. The public is invited to meet the artists during any or all of the ten days of continuous outdoor painting. These events are

called paint-outs and are generally timed. For example, attendees may want to visit the Balducci Vineyards to stroll around and enjoy watching the artists capture the Missouri Sunset. For automobile enthusiasts, visit the Defiance Car Show where artists will be painting a variety of vintage automobiles or local scenery. The 10 day festival event is open daily to the public and is featured at unique and picturesque settings – a great opportunity for a quick afternoon getaway. Artists’ work will be available for sale at the end of each event. The final awards and art sale will be held at Mount Pleasant Estates on May 4.
