Fleet of locally-built boats to be featured in HBO’s ‘Lewis and Clark’ miniseries By Brett Auten A trio of homemade, one-of-a-kind vessels will soon share serious screen time with Hollywood’s upper echelon. A fleet of boats from the non-profit Discovery Expedition of St. Charles will be featured in an upcoming HBO miniseries “Lewis and Clark.” A full-sized keelboat and two pirouges were handpicked to help bring to life the epic story. Filming is expected to begin in June in Ontario. The project is executive produced by Tom Hanks and includes players like Edward Norton and Brad Pitt participating at varying levels. Casey Affleck will portray Meriwether Lewis and Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts will portray William Clark. Based on the book, “Undaunted Courage” by Stephen E. Ambrose, “Lewis and Clark” tells the story of America’s first contact with the land and natives of the country west of the Mississippi River. The miniseries follows the journey of the Corps of Discovery and its captains, Lewis and Clark and their search for a fabled all-water route to the Pacific. The DESC has known something was in the works for
some time, especially after a visit to the Boat House in January from HBO officials. “We have known about and have been keeping an eye on the project for five years and just now they pulled the trigger,” Sue Schneider, DESC Board of Directors said. “It’s exciting. These are tried, and true tested vessels.” When not getting called to star in epic miniseries’ (Ken Burns has rented the three boats in the past), the DESC’s fleet make steady, shorter trips and stops at other river towns manned by reenactors as part of its true purpose, history in the flesh. After the stop in Ontario, the fleet will make its way to Georgia for additional footage. A cosmetic crew from HBO will arrive in April to help age the fleet and get it camera ready. “I think they’re going to construct another cabin and make other changes to get it exactly how it really looked,” Schneider said. The honor of being picked is another – and deserved – tip of the cap to Glen Bishop. Schneider called Bishop the granddaddy of the project. Brainchild is another description tossed around.
