By Brett Auten The hall inside St. Louis’ Lambert International Airport was strewn with red, white, and blue; homemade placards, balloons, and a throng of family and travelers. USO representatives, military members, and employees where awaiting the arrival of one man.

Tom Lacey, a 94-year-old World War II Veteran from Weldon Spring, returned home on Sept. 11 after a week-long trip to Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. Lacey visited the countries where he fought with the United States Army 75 years ago in the Battle of the Bulge.

A massive water cannon sprayed over Lacey’s United Airlines plane once it touched down. Once he exited the jetway, he entered the gate areas where some of his 12 children and plethora of grandchildren were among those smattering him with applause.

“It was absolutely astounding,” Lacey said.

“Walking off the plane, it was like being in a fantasy land. It was a complete surprise and everyone involved was so gracious.”

Lacey had no idea when his plane landed from his connection in Chicago that all of this was waiting.

“It’s pretty special that we could do this for him, especially on 9/11,” Angela Struckhoff.

During his revisit to Belgium, Lacey had gifts bestowed upon in every village he visited.

“I didn’t realize I was such a rare bird,” Lacey said. “I felt like I was President Roosevelt or something. (Belgians) were shaking my hand and getting their picture taken with me.”

Lacey, who along with 12 children has

32 grandchildren, was joined on the trip to Belgium by one of his daughters. The Louisiana-based National World War II Museum help fund the trip, which included a visit to the Bastogne Museum.

Lacey served with the 99th Infantry Division and participated in numerous battles.

role in the Battle of the Bulge. The 99th suffered 2,524 casualties during that fight, 465 of which were killed in action.

Encouraged and assisted by family members, Lacey recently wrote a book titled “An Infantryman’s Reflections on World War II.” The book, which is available locally and on Amazon, is a fitting 71page tribute to all the World War II vets who never got a hero’s welcome when they came back. It talks less about battles, and more about the friends he made and the experiences they had.

“This little book is put together in an effort to give the reader some idea of what infantry was like during those most anxious years,” Lacey wrote in the introduction. “As you can see I have focused on many individuals to tell the story. This is because in life, it is individual people and their accomplishments that make life interesting and worthwhile.”

Daughters celebrate Constitution Week with displays The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress in 1955 to set aside Sept. 17 to 23 annually to be dedicated to observe Constitution Week.

National’s resolution was adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Aug. 2, 1956.

The Caroline Close Stuart Chapter, NSDAR is been making sure local libraries have a special display commemorating the United States Constitution during Constitution Week.

Under the direction of Mary Jo Anderson, Constitution Week Chairman, committee members from the Chapter placed Constitution Week displays throughout the community in libraries, churches, schools and banks beginning Sept. 1.

The goal of the celebration is to empha-

size citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution; to inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life; and to encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.

“We must remember and teach, those who wrote the Constitution believed no government can create freedom, but government must guard freedom rather than encroach upon the freedoms of its people” stated Anderson. “The Constitution by itself cannot guarantee liberty.”

“Constitution Week is the perfect opportunity to read and study this great document which is the safeguard of our American liberties.”

St. Charles County Corrections hosts regional crisis intervention training for mental illness Sixteen officers from the St. Charles County Corrections Department graduated last month from a United States Department of Justice (DOJ) Crisis Intervention Training program with skills that will help them more effectively communicate and manage individuals in custody who are suffering from mental illness or mental health issues.

Skills, according to Corrections Director Dan Keen, that are needed more and more frequently.

“Statistics from the DOJ show there are more individuals incarcerated who are suffering from mental illness than in any of the mental health facilities in the United States,” Keen says. “And it’s not just happening everywhere else.

It’s here – in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area.”

Keen says, on average, the mental health team at the jail visits with 565 inmates each month. Since January, 281 inmates have been on suicide watch and 34 percent of the current population is on psychotropic medication.

Recognizing the importance of facing this challenge head on, St. Charles

The Stanley Cup comes to Castlio Elementary

Castlio Elementary students and staff had a surprise visitor recently, a star known around the world. This celebrity stands three feet tall, weighs 35 pounds, is 97 percent silver, is 126 years old, and bears more than 2,400 names. The National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup trophy made a surprise stop at the school as part of its victory tour celebrating the St. Louis Blues’ 2019 championship, to the delight of over 800 Castlio students and staff members.

Stanley Cup tradition has it that, in the year after the win, members of the Cup-winning team can take it on tour so that hockey fans can bask in its silver sheen. As part of its victory tour, St. Louis Blues Head Equipment Manager Joel Farnsworth wanted to share the experience with the students at Castlio as well as his own children, fourth-grader Abby and first-grader Joel.

“When Mr. Farnsworth told me that we were going to be able to have the Cup here at Castlio, I thought it would be a great opportunity for our students to be a part of something historic, with the Blues winning the Cup for the first time,” said Castlio Principal Tim Scholle. “For the Farnworth family to give a portion of their day with the Cup to our school community was priceless and amazing. The kids loved every minute of it, and our staff was overwhelmed.”

“It was a tough secret to keep, but it’s pretty awesome that my dad was able to bring the Cup to our school,” said Abby. “I think my friends were really surprised and excited. It’s still hard for me to imagine that it’s really here and we can touch it.’

During the Cup’s visit to Castlio, it made stops in both Joel and Abby’s classrooms, where they were able to share the honor with their friends.

Mr. Farnsworth also happily answered questions and shared some history and fun facts about the Cup with students.

The Cup made its way through the school with stunned students and staff “oohing” and “aahing” over it as it passed.

After a brief stop in the staff workroom, where thrilled

staff lined up for selfies and group shots with the Cup, it was brought outside for a surprise school-wide photo on the playground.

Winning the Stanley Cup is still surreal for many St. Louis Blues players, staff, and fans.

“We would never have imagined in January that we would be lifting the Stanley Cup in June,” said Farnsworth. “I’m really glad that we were able to bring it here to Castlio and share it with the kids and staff.

The smiles you see on everyone’s faces and the excitement to see the Cup up close is pretty darn cool.”

The Farnsworth family moved to the St. Louis area in 2009, and they specifically chose to live here for the Francis Howell School District.

A promise of a world without Alzheimer’s

Francis Howell celebrates 333 AP Scholars

The Alzheimer’s Association is hosting their annual St. Charles County Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, Sept. 28 at St. Charles Community College. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join together and honor those we’ve lost and that are currently battling dementia.

Perhaps the most touching feature of the Walk is the Promise Garden – an experience that allows participants to raise flowers representing their promise to remember, honor, care and fight for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. There are four different colored flowers and each color represents a different motivation for why someone walks towards a future without Alzheimer’s. Each color flower and the meaning behind the colors are: • Blue Flower - I have Alzheimer’s or another related dementia • Yellow Flower - I am supporting or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s/dementia • Purple Flower - I have lost someone to Alzheimer’s/dementia • Orange Flower - I support the cause and the Alzheimer’s Association vision of a world without Alzheimer’s Participants unite with their flowers for a heartfelt opening ceremony prior to the commencement of the Walk. Together, the Promise Flowers

333 students, the most in Francis Howell School District history, have been named Advanced Placement (AP) Scholars for 201819. The AP program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through AP courses and exams with the prestigious AP Scholar Awards.

“One of our Strategic Plan focus areas is to provide students rigorous courses that prepare them for college-level work. These classes also help students increase their understanding of potential career pathways,” said Deputy Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Nathan Hoven. “We are proud that we have continued to recruit more students into AP classes, while those students are simultaneously attaining higher scores. We commend all of our students who have earned AP Scholar recognition.”

There are four different levels of the AP awards that students can achieve. FHSD had 166 students who received scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams and earned the AP Scholar award.

The AP Scholar with Honor award is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. FHSD had 67 students who earned the AP Scholar with Honor award. FHSD had 100 students who received an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams, and earned the AP Scholar with Distinction award.

The National AP Scholar award is granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

Francis Howell had 12 students earn the prestigious National AP Scholar award.

The majority of AP Award recipients were graduating seniors, but there were more than 100 juniors who earned AP Awards.

The final flower, a white flower represents the hope for the first survivor of Alzheimer’s. This disease does not have a known cure or any way to slow the progression of the disease. It is our mission to one day see a world filled with survivors of Alzheimer’s holding their white flowers with pride and the knowledge that they live in a world without dementia.

The 29th Annual St. Charles Regional College Fair is coming 6-7:30 p.m. to St. Charles Community College at 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in Cottleville. Oct. 7: Golf tournament fundraiser

Operation Food Search, a nonprofit hunger relief organization, will host its 26th annual golf tournament with registration beginning at 11 a.m. and a shotgun start at noon. Rascals are the Frontier League Champions in 2019 The 2018 defending West Division champion River City Rascals baseball club plays in the Frontier League with home games at the friendly confines of the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

By now I’m sure all are knowledgeable on the results of the Championship series.

The River City club defeated the Florence Freedom 7-5 in Kentucky in game five of the Frontier League Championship Series on Monday night, Sept. 16, earning their second league title since 2010. The championship marks the end of the team’s 21-year run in O’Fallon, as they announced in August that they would cease operations at the end of the season.

Indoor soccer in St. Charles make major announcement The St. Louis Ambush play in the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) playing their home games at the Family Arena in St. Charles.

The Ambush has signed one of the top defenders in Diego Bobadilla for the 2019-20 sea-

son, CEO Shelly Clark announced recently.

Although previously signed by the Ambush for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, Bobadilla never joined the club but says he is eager to do so for the upcoming campaign.

“I can’t wait to play this season,” he said. “Personal circumstances with my job and family wouldn’t allow me to be here the past two seasons, but the team was patient with me and has given me another opportunity. I’ve learned and grown these past few years and I’m thankful to the Ambush for giving me another shot.”

Bobadilla has one season of professional indoor soccer experience, having appeared in 12 games with the Cedar Rapids Rampage during the 2015-16 season, logging five goals, one assist and blocking three shots.

He has also played for the U.S. Men’s National Futsal team, has been a coach in the Milwaukee area for four years, and has played with the Croatian Eagles SC, United Players Soccer Academy, WSG Futsal Club and Strike FC. Ambush Head Coach Hewerton said he is happy to have his newest player join the team.

“Diego has been playing futsal in the U.S. and Argentina and I believe that he will arrive in St. Louis more experienced and with greater technical ability,” Hewerton said.

The Ambush will kick off their seventh season in November, with their home opener slated for Black Friday, Nov. 29 at 7:05 p.m. at the Family Arena. Ahead of the season, the Ambush will treat fans to their annual free Fanfest, including an exhibition game against the Dallas Sidekicks, on Nov. 16. *More exciting details to follow

bowl, lightly beat eggs with hand-mixer on medium speed; approximately 30 seconds. Add oil, sugar and yogurt; beat for 1 minute until smooth. Add flour and baking powder; beat until well combined; approximately one minute. Pour mixture into greased pan and bake 35-40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely on wire rack, sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.

Blueberry Sauce: In medium saucepan, mix berries, sugar, cornstarch, water and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer until desired thickness. Pour into bowl, let cool completely. Serve over sliced cake.

Refrigerate remaining sauce for future use.

Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

“Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,” one of the best installments in its franchise, featured William Shatner’s Kirk facing off against Ricardo Montalban’s Khan.

In St. Louis, a little film called “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial” had families lined up to see it at drive-ins and indoor theaters.

Set partially inside a mainframe computer, “Tron” was underappreciated in its initial theatrical run, but it showed the power of CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) long before “Toy Story.”

Sylvester Stallone also had a great summer that year with “Rocky III,” the third film which also laid the foundation for the “Creed” spin-offs. In the fall of 1982, Stallone took the lead role in “First Blood,” the story of another fighting man, this one a Vietnam vet who runs afoul of the law. The recently released “Rambo: Last Blood” marks the fifth installment of the franchise.

Rocky Balboa was a good-hearted man who got the opportunity of a lifetime and became a sports legend. In contrast, John Rambo, a Medal of Honor-winner, was like countless young men who fought during the Vietnam War. Years after his discharge, he traveled to Hope, Washington, to check up on a combat buddy. Unfortunately, his friend died of can-

Moore On Life There’s an old saying that goes, “Never waste a dimer on a person that’s a minor”. Actually, it’s a new saying. I just made it up, but I am getting along in years so that counts for the “old” part.

For those who are kidless and need an explanation, allow me: You see, when children don’t know the value of a dollar and think money grows on trees they become unappreciative. (Oh, snap! Put me out of my misery, I’m sounding like my mother.) Excuse me while I take a Valium.

Now then, back to gratitude.

This is why hotdogs were invented. As the legend goes, many decades ago a grownup had just grilled some tasty expensive ribeyes and served them to his hungry children. He ran in to fetch a steak knife only to return horrified to find the kids slathering the expensive cuts in ketchup.

“NO! NO!” He yelled. “Don’t cover this kind of meat in ketchup. It’s blasphemy!”

The children looked at him and laughed at the silly word he used.

“Silly Dad,” they said. They then bit into their steak and began to cry.

“This is nasty,” wailed one.

“This is hard to chew,” said another.

“Then eat your beans!” their mother chimed in.

They cried even harder and said, “No way.

They’re green!”

The kids immediately fed their meat to the family dog then grabbed some dry cereal and ate it straight from the box as they watched cartoons.

The man sadly looked at his content dog that was

now a fattened lump snoring blissfully as it belched up costly meat burps.

That’s the last straw, he thought.

He gathered up the leftover meat gristle and mixed in some uneaten beans and added a handful of dry cereal then rolled it all between his hands until it formed a long, snake-like shape. He tossed it on the grill then threw it between a slice of bread and slathered it in ketchup.

The hotdog was born and children everywhere were delighted.

Why am I recounting this tale of ingratitude?

Oh, maybe because I spent a small wad of cash on a few grandkid minors and transported them to Hawaii. After seeing beautiful mountains and oceans and beaches and jungles and sea animals, what was their most memorable experience? The hotel swimming pool.
