By Brett Auten No matter the age, size or athletic ability, if you hang around KOR Komplex in St. Charles long enough you will likely see a cornucopia of people walk through the door. Located just off Main Street at 546 1st Capitol Dr. KOR Komplex has rapidly grown into a hot spot for fitness for the entire family. While KOR offers a variety of training options, no matter the physicality of its customer, the gym found its niche as being the only location in the area to offer America Ninja Warrior training and development. For those unaware, “American Ninja Warrior” is the obstacle-based television competition that has become a ratings juggernaut beginning in its fifth season when it switched to NBC in 2014. KOR Komplex (also known as KOR Integrated Fitness) is the brainchild of owner/operator Brendan O’Neil. O’Neil, 41, is a lifelong St. Charles resident who left behind a constraining professional life in sales to follow his passion of health, fitness and wellness. He quickly delved into the world of personal training and built quite the name for himself. He eventually worked up to the point to where he trained athletes in
professional football, baseball and every other walk of life. In the congested world of big box gyms, O’Neil and KOR found its voice by offering niche programs like parkour and rock climbing as well as the ninja training to go alongside its functionalbase personal training. “I always tried to be something different as a trainer and this gave me an opportunity to try something different,” O’Neil said. “When I started paying attention to the ‘American Ninja Warrior’ show and things like Tough Mudder events, it’s all about being aware of your body, having great coordination, great balance and great core strength and control and it just kind of clicked.” It was a slow burn for KOR as word of mouth, as opposed to advertising and marketing, began to lead athletes and clients there during the summer of 2014. “We would be lucky to have 30-to40 people come in our gym a month,” O’Neil said. “Once the winter came around and we started talking to other gyms they said kids’ birthday parties is where it’s at and that’s when it clicked that this would be a great atmosphere for kids and adults.”
O’Neil went to a Wentzville school district to pass out fliers touting KOR as a birthday destination and suddenly gas was added to the fire. Now, children make up about two-third of the clientele. KOR has had three of its trainers earn significant air time on “American Ninja Warrior.” Kirsti Meyer, Kyle Mendoza
