St. Charles County Heritage Museum exhibit features local high school sports memorabilia from the past 100 years By Brett Auten It’s an excellent opportunity to break out the old letterman’s jacket and see if it still fits. The Heritage Museum is offering trips back to high school sports glory days with a visit to its new exhibit. The High School Athletics exhibit opened April 1 and is located on the second floor of the Heritage Museum, located at 1630 Heritage Landing in St. Charles. The display, which has a vintage motif, features an assortment of local high school sports team memorabilia, photos, yearbooks, trophies, and uniforms were collected over the past 100 years. Some of the artifacts featured in the museum were loaned to the parks de-

partment by the Academy of the Sacred Heart Archives and Duchesne High School. Theresa Grass is the archivist for Academy of the Sacred Heart. Now a pre-K thru eighthgrade Catholic school, Sacred Heart graduated its last class of high school seniors in the spring of 1972. “I think this is a wonderful idea,” Grass said. “Sports were, and still are, a major portion of the high school experience and to see how it evolved through the 1900s is pretty important.” Grass, a Sacred Heart grad who previously worked in the school’s library, scoured through the archive of photos and uniforms. One alum donated a piece of equipment that

always found its way in a box when it was moving day. “We played all kinds of sports but (field) hockey was a biggie too,” Grass said. “An alum donated her old hockey stick. She said throughout all of her moves in her life for some reason she took her hockey stick with her.” Some of the other parochial schools represented include St. Peters High, which eventually became Duchesne as well as a St. Charles Military Academy and Franklin High School, a regional school for black children that was open from 1914 to 1955.
