Town’s Farmers and Artisans Market looks to rejuvenate a Main Street devastated by flooding By Brett Auten Winfield’s Main Street is needing a shot in the arm. Besieged by flooding less than two years ago, the small town in Lincoln County is looking to a tried and true method of bringing a community together. The first season of Market on Main, Winfield’s Farmers and Artisans Market will kick off in May. The market’s mission is to improve the health of residents by providing a venue where local farmers, producers, crafters and artisans can come together to provide a variety of fresh produce and related products. The farmers’ market will be held every Saturday from 8 a.m. - noon beginning the first Saturday of May through the last Saturday in October. The market will be held at 210 Main Street, which lies off of the Hwy. 79
corridor. The location is apropos of the mission. Previously at 210 Main Street was Pizza Plus restaurant. Not only was this a favorite dinning spot, Pizza Plus also employed a number of young adults. In the summer of 2015 torrential rains led to dangerous flash flooding in Lincoln County. The most se-
vere flash flooding happened on Highway 79 just south of Winfield and many of the businesses on Main Street were swamped by the rising water. When it was all said and done, 12 of the 15 businesses – including Pizza Plus – were flooded out. Just a month later, a fire gutted the popular pizzeria. Spearheaded by Winfield alderman Robyn Cryts (along with Sarah Long), Market on Main will hopefully kick start the revitalization process for Main Street. “We hope that it can be a catalyst to bring back historical value to the town and get some businesses back,” Cryts said. “Since 2015 we have been trying to find ways to make it a hub.” A two-fold goal of the project is to also to better the future of its younger inhabitants.
