By Brett Auten With spring training starting to warm up, the mood in our baseball-crazed region is starting to lighten.

To go along with the sound of a cracking bat, a new homegrown Major League Baseball exhibit is coming soon to the Heritage Museum. The new display will feature 22 professional players from St. Charles County.

Titled “Locally Grown: The Major League Baseball Players of St. Charles County,” the exhibit will open on April 6. Former professional baseball pitcher Mark Buehrle of St. Charles and father and son duo, Ken and Tom Heintzelman of St. Peters, are among the big

league names featured.

“Growing up in St. Charles County and playing sports in the local schools helped shape my career and become the baseball player I am,” Buehrle said. “I’m excited to be able to contribute to this exhibit at the Heritage Museum and encourage kids to be active and play on local sports teams.”

Buehrle’s place in the exhibit will take up the most real estate, and rightfully so.

Buehrle began his MLB career with the Chicago White Sox and started the opening game every season from 2002 to 2006 and again from 2008 to 2011. He also pitched for the Miami Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays.

Buehrle pitched 200 innings in 14 consecutive seasons (2001–2014), tying Hall-of-Fam-

ers Greg Maddux, Phil Niekro and Christy Mathewson. He recorded at least ten wins in 15 straight seasons.

Buehrle pitched a no-hitter against the Texas Rangers on April 18, 2007, surrendering just one walk to Sammy Sosa who was then picked off at first base. Two seasons later, Buehrle pitched the 18th perfect game in baseball history against the Tampa Bay Rays on July 23, 2009. In White Sox pitching history, Buehrle is fifth all-time in strikeouts, sixth in games started, and eighth in wins and innings pitched.

Though still weeks away from its opening, visitors to the museum have already caught wind of its opening.

“I have been connecting with some visitors and they are excited about learning about people they know or may know through a mutual friend or relative,” Zahedi said. “It really shows how interconnected the community is in St. Charles County.”

The baseball exhibit will be the perfect segue from the high school athletic exhibit that debuted at the museum last year.

The new exhibit is all about enhancing the museum’s “Our

Sporting Heritage” exhibit, which celebrates recreation by showcasing the history of hunting and fishing in St. Charles County and Missouri from prehistoric times to the modern era.

The sporting exhibit features a Marksman Training Simulator, an interactive digital hunting simulator that has the largest video shooting surface in the world and is one of only three of its kind in the United States.

The simulator allows visitors to experience the thrill of hunting duck, deer, bear, and boar, as well as clay targets, and was donated to the Parks Department by hunting enthusiast August A. Busch III. There is no charge to tour

By Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris Francis Howell has decided to bring student transportation services in-house, beginning with the 2019-20 school year.

The district received three different transportation proposals for next year, with the lowest bid coming in at more than $10.5 million annually. We believe that we can accomplish this transition for the amount of the lowest bid, or potentially less. In addition to cost savings, we also intend to provide a higher level of transportation service and improve the average age of the bus fleet.

While the overall student enrollment in the Francis Howell School District has remained fairly steady over the past several years, there are some areas of the district that have experienced significant popula-

tion growth. Currently both Fairmount and Warren Elementary are over capacity, and projections show that enrollment at those two schools will continue to increase. The district will use “soft boundary” changes to create long-term solutions to these capacity concerns.

These changes to attendance areas will allow students to stay in their current school until they finish, with school bus transportation provided during this time.

It will also allow younger siblings of those students to attend the same school as their older sibling if requested. Only incoming kindergarten and transfer students in these areas will be required to attend the new schools. We have held four different community meetings over the past several months to share information and answer questions about the changes.

In district financial news, we’re on pace to finish the year in the black with a positive balance. Lower rates in the bond market provided an opportunity for FHSD to refinance a portion of our debt, saving the district and taxpayers more than $100,000.

SCCAD assistant chief attains American College of Healthcare Executives ‘Fellow’ distinction Like other areas of the healthcare continuum, emergency medical services (EMS) is an industry that has undergone considerable evolution in recent years, and more change undoubtedly is on the horizon.

St. Charles County Ambulance District (SCCAD) is well-positioned to develop and promote best practices to integrated community healthcare thanks to Assistant Chief David Lewis, who recently became a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), the nation’s leading professional society for healthcare leaders.

“The healthcare management field plays a vital role in providing high-quality care to the

people in our communities, which makes having a standard of excellence promoted by a professional organization critically important,” says Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE, CAE, president and CEO of ACHE. Fellow status represents achievement of the highest standard of professional development. Only 9,100 healthcare executives hold this distinction.

Candidates must fulfill multiple requirements, including passing a comprehensive exam, meeting academic and experiential criteria, and demonstrating professional/community involvement. Fellows are also committed to ongoing professional development and under-

go recertification every three years.

“Assistant Chief Lewis’s leadership, problem-solving abilities and ability to develop strategic, collaborative solutions to issues in our industry and community make him an invaluable asset to our organization,” said SCCAD Chief Taz Meyer.

Since his arrival at SCCAD in 2015, Lewis has been instrumental in the development of several cutting-edge initiatives that see paramedics collaborating with healthcare partners across the community to

improve outcomes. Examples include a hospital readmission avoidance program operated in collaboration with Barnes Jewish St. Peters and Progress West Hospitals, and a behavioral health telemedicine partnership with Behavioral Health Response that connects qualifying patients with masters-trained counselors as opposed to routing these individuals to an emergency department.

Lewis also spearheaded the creation of the district’s Substance Use Recovery Response Team. Developed in early 2017 to help those affected by the opiate epidemic, the program received the American Ambulance Association’s Communi-

The object of the game is to find the Chick-Fil-A Cow, Ranger Rick, leprechauns, Sasquatch, the Loch Ness Monster and other characters that are hidden along a section of Cannon Trail. A park map with clues will be provided, but you’ll need your cell phone or a digital camera to take a picture of each character when found.

The first 50 players to complete the game and return to shelter #3 will win prizes. The winners receive a Chick-Fil-A guest card for a free breakfast entrée, and a magazine from the National Wildlife Federation. Wear your St. Patrick’s Day green that day and receive a bonus prize.

professionals representing a cross-section of the St. Louis performing arts community and entertainment industry.

Each round of competition has a panel of at least three judges who adjudicate and advance acts to the next round. Acts are judged on technical ability, interpretation, stage presence and originality. Throughout every level of the competition, professional insight is given regarding technique and performance skills to benefit these high school students and improve their overall talent.

The Final Competition is free and open to the public and are a professionally produced production, adjudicated by both St. Louis and national performing arts professionals “We are so pleased with the

Students in this competition are vying for more than $40,000 in prizes, cash awards, college scholarships, and performance opportunities. Finalists from the past eight years have performed at The Muny, National Dance Week, Taste of Maplewood, Gateway Grizzlies, Shakespeare Festival, Chamber Music Society of St. Louis, Winter Opera St. Louis and The Rising Stars Showcase.

Inspiration Corner: Fight inertia with positive energy I lay in bed with my nose under the covers. The frigid wind whipped outside my window, causing it to rattle. It was 5 a.m. and the very last thing I wanted to do was go outside. I considered my options; call in sick to work and hibernate, go into work and be unproductive, quit my job and move to the Florida Keys.

I heard the pitter patter of little doggie feet and remembered not everyone has the luxury of indoor plumbing. So I scurried to the cold doorway, wondered if winter would ever end, and considered how tasty a donut and hot coffee would be. Except that I don’t eat donuts any more and I’ve given up coffee because I’m currently struggling with anxiety again.

Is there any worse time to be a healthy human being than February?

I sorted through the list of outdoor exercise activities I couldn’t do in freezing temperatures and frowned. But rather than consent to a melancholy monsoon, I decided to move. I knew if I raised my heart rate, my mood would

improve as well. Besides, bad brownie behavior had made most of the pants in my closet very angry and I was tired of trying to negotiate with them.

I descended into my basement and locked eyes with my elliptical machine. I was in no state to tangle with that beast so I put on an exercise DVD. There is something so gratifying about watching a toned and agile step aerobics instructor mamba and shuffle in the wee hours of the morning. I confess that I tried to keep up but my jiggly belly objected. Then my dog, Annabelle, wanted to dance too and suddenly I was chasing her around the basement with her bunny puppet which is way more fun than finishing my workout. Pretty soon the commotion woke my sleepyhead son and he joined in the fun.

In a quiet moment he said, “Mom, why do you exercise?”

I said, “Because I want to stay healthy.”

“Is it hard?”

His face was flushed and his big green eyes were full of wonder.

I said, “Sometimes.”

“Mom, I think you are beautiful just the way you are.”

“Even with my jiggly belly?”

He poked at my tummy as if I were the Pillsbury dough Girl. “That’s the best part.”

I tried to hug him but he said, “No sweaty kisses!”

So I gave him three and we dissolved into giggles.

Later, while I sat at my desk and tried to decipher emails, I realized that sometimes the best days are the cold-andgloomy-can’t-go-outside days.

Sweetheart Dance kicks off 2019 season at Cultural Arts Centre

Children ages five-and-under will love becoming little explorers as they learn and play in the park. Bring your adventurous tots to Broemmelsiek Park near Defiance, from 10 – 11 a.m., March 7, April 4, May 2, Oct. 3, Nov. 7 and Dec. 5, for St. Charles County Park’s Little Explorer Nature Program.

This popular parent-child program focuses on a different theme each month. Preschoolers explore all things outdoors: birds, reptiles, insects, plants, animals, seeds, pollinators, dinosaurs, and more. Dress for the weather – we’re going to take a short hike, play fun activities, read a story, and enjoy a snack together.

Through a partnership with Global Design Feature, American College Gurus, and Lindenwood University’s Fashion Business and Design program, graduating seniors in Lindenwood’s program showcased their mini collections at New York Fashion Week on Feb. 8.

“We are extremely grateful for the ability to send our phenomenal students to New York Fashion Week completely free,” said Dr. Chajuana Trawick, the endowed chair in fashion busi-

ness and design. “Without the miracle bestowed upon the program, our students would not have been able to participate.”

Through support from a donation, the fashion program created the first SFF Fashion Business and Design Travel Grant, which supports funding for fashion business and design students to travel away and abroad.

“This is so exciting,” said student Anna Heinold upon learning of the opportunity.

Francis Howell launches district mobile app Francis Howell School District has launched a new mobile app. The app is designed to enable parents, staff, students, and the larger community to stay informed and up-to-date on important issues, information, and activities happening in the district. The free app displays the FHSD logo and content, and can be downloaded in the Apple App Store and Google Play, just search for “Francis Howell.”

Analytics show that now two out of every three people who access the district’s online information do so from a mobile device. This will make it faster and easier for members of the FHSD community to access what they need including news, calendars, menus, staff directories, push notifications, and more.

“Our new mobile app empowers everyone to stay connected and up-to-date on the information that they want and need directly from their mobile device,” said Chief Communications Officer Matt Deichmann. “We are excited about how our new app will help us communicate more effectively, and hope it leads to a stronger, more connected school community overall.”

The mobile app is a result of the district’s “Future Focused” strategic planning efforts. The Engaged Family and Community Partnerships Committee has identified a mobile app as a priority strategy as FHSD explores “new ways to engage, communicate, and collaborate with families and the community.”

Francis Howell receives a score of 100 percent from the state The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has released the 2018 Annual Performance Report (APR) data for school districts around the state. This year, FHSD received a score of 100 percent on the “school district report card,” after receiving a 99.3 percent for the past two years. The Missouri School Improvement Plan (MSIP 5) is the state’s school accountability system for reviewing and accrediting public school districts in Missouri and is used to calculate APR scores.

The APR uses multiple years of data to provide an accurate evaluation of school districts and charter schools.

“We are extremely proud and excited about earning 100 percent on the APR,” said Chief Academic Officer Dr. Nathan Hoven. “This result highlights the hard work of our students, teachers, and principals as they strive for excellence on a daily basis. As a district, we are committed to providing our students with the best experience to prepare them for success in life, college and careers.”

The standard of MSIP 5 measures five areas: Academic Achievement, Subgroup Achievement, College and Career Readiness, Attendance, and Graduation Rate. The MSIP 5 Performance Standards are designed to recognize the achievement and continuous growth of all students as they prepare for success in a global economy.

St. Charles County employers invited to take online survey about soft skills issues To better understand the needs of the business community, the St. Charles County Department of Workforce & Business Development is offering local employers the opportunity to participate in an online survey regarding the soft skills of job applicants and existing staff. Soft skills are personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively with other people and include work ethic, team work, time management, problem solving and communication.

“In the last decade, regional employers have voiced ongoing concern that some job applicants and existing staff struggle with soft skills.

This is evidenced by the results of the annual State of St. Louis Workforce Report conducted

by St. Louis Community College and the State of Missouri,” says Scott J. Drachnik, Director of the St. Charles County Department of Workforce & Business Development and the Missouri Job Center of St. Charles County. “Our goal, through this local survey, is to better understand the soft skills training needs of employers in St. Charles County and to identify best practices of local employers who are actively training and mentoring their staff in the area of soft skills.”

The survey is being conducted by the St. Charles County Soft Skills Task Force, a sub-committee of the St. Charles County Workforce Development Board. Drachnik says the task force has listened to presentations and conducted research over the past year to learn how soft skills training is interwoven in K-12 education, trade schools, colleges and universities.

The task force has identified the need for employers of all sizes to emphasize the importance of soft skills and provide the ongoing tools and training at the work place to help people grow and improve where needed. Drachnik says regular life skills workshops and training are available through the Missouri Job Center of St. Charles County and others in the community, such as Connections to Success, but that, through the survey, the task force will be able to determine what other programs are needed.

Feb. 21: Public meeting

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting to discuss the latest developments in the Route N Study in St. Charles County.

Members of the Route N Study team will be on hand to discuss the various concepts being proposed and the public will be able to provide feedback about those plans. The public meeting is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the lobby at Liberty High School at 2275 Sommers Road in Lake Saint Louis. The Route N Study is evaluating issues and concerns on Route N between the intersection of South Point Prairie Road and Jackson Road and the I-64/Route 364 interchange. The study began in August 2018 and is expected to take about 15 months to complete. Feb. 23: Comedy night

St. Charles Community College will be hosting Comedy Night, featuring J.R. De Guzman and Kiry Shabazz, at 7 p.m. Born in the Philippines and raised in California, J.R. De Guzman began performing comedy while working as a music teacher. Kiry Shabazz is a standup from Cleveland, Ohio, but is now based in Los Angeles. Tickets to the event can be purchased with a valid SCC student ID for $5 or for $10 for the general public. The event will be held in the Donald D. Shook Fine Arts Building theater. March 1-3: Emergency response training

Would you know what to do in an emergency situation? Would you know how to assist in the aftermath? Learn all of this and more at O’Fallon’s free Community Emergency Response Team

(CERT) training March 1, through March 3 at the O’Fallon Streets Department building at 1089 Public Works Drive in O’Fallon. Friday’s class runs from 6 to 10 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday’s classes are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants must attend all three days to pass the course. The free, 20hour course will cover these topics and more: basic emergency response skills, assembling a disaster preparedness kit, hands-on basic medical assessment and treatment for injuries, burns, etc., working as a team to conduct triage, light search and rescue and extinguishing small fires and how to assist should emergency personnel be unable to respond to a disastrous event. CERT skills also apply to daily emergencies. All participants must pass a background check and must be at least 18 years old. You do not need to be a resident of O’Fallon to attend the class. March 2: Washers tournament

The St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department is seeking competitive teams for its 10th Annual Washers Tournament at the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association Hall of Fame at Quail Ridge Park, located at 560 Interstate Dr. near Wentzville. Players at least 16 years of age will have a chance to test their skills against the area’s best players as teams compete for cash prize in this double-elimination tournament.

The event is co-sponsored by the Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club. Registration and practice time on the indoor court are from 10:30–11:45 a.m. the day of the event. The tournament begins at noon. Cost is $25 per team of two. All teams are guaranteed to play at least four games or two rounds. Each round consists of the best two out of three games. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top teams, with prize values dependent upon the number of teams entered in the tournament. Spectators are welcome and food and drink is available for purchase from the concession stand.

St. Charles Community College will host “Urban,” a multimedia invitation art exhibit featuring eight professional artists from the St. Louis region who use the theme of the urban landscape in their artwork. Guns ‘N Hoses announce profits to go to the Backstoppers The annual boxing/MMA events raise money for our first responders who perish in the line of duty.

In 2017, a check for over $700,000 was presented to go toward the needs of the organization.

Steve Holley, the major organizer, told his large group of volunteers he wanted to make at least one dollar more than the previous year.

The final tally was announced recently and many responded with open pocketbooks as there ended up being a check of $800,000 to assist our first responders program.

Comments by the group included, “We’re celebrating a record-breaking year! Because of the generosity of St. Louis we can continue to provide financial assistance to the families of fallen first responders.”

“While we’re still celebrating our record-breaking season of Guns ‘N Hoses, we’re excited to announce the theme for 2019 - ‘Go All In.’ Whether team red or team blue, we’re going all in for those who put everything on the line, every day. No excuses. No fear. And no backing down. Are you in their corner?”

Entrepreneur Tim Maxvill has recently accepted the GM position for the Stampede from the NGL Chairman & League President Joe E. McClendon III. “I am excited to be a part of the inaugural season of the NGL representing the St. Louis team. Recent excellent play by Ambush players pays off St. Louis Ambush play their home games at the Family Arena and are presently tied for second place in the South Central division of the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL).

A few reasons for this success was having midfielder Lucas Almeida and forward Justin Stinson being named to the Sporturf MASL Team of the Week for Week Eleven of the 2018-19 season. It marks the first appearance for both players on the Team of the Week this season.

The Ambush were victorious in the one game they played during Week Eleven, defeating the Kansas City Comets 10-8 Feb. 9 at the Family Arena. Almeida tallied a goal and four assists in that win while Stinson posted a hat trick and an assist.

The next Ambush appearance will see two games slated for this weekend, both at the Family Arena.

The Orlando SeaWolves are back in town Friday, Feb. 22 at 7:35 p.m. and then the Ambush host the Florida Tropics Sunday, Feb. 24 at 3:05 p.m. *About a month left in the season

Recipe: Simple ways to be heart smart

Fill in the blank squares in the grid, making sure that every row, column and 3-by-3 box includes all the digits 1 through 9.

Banana Pecan Cherry Oatmeal Ingredients: 1 cup old-fashioned oats 2 cups water 1/2 cup pecan milk

Feature

1 banana, sliced 1/4 cup pecan halves 1/4 cup dried tart cherries 1/4 cup honey

Directions: In large, microwave-safe bowl, combine oats and water. Microwave on high 3-4 minutes, or until oats are cooked through. Watch carefully to avoid boiling over.

Remove from microwave, stir and divide between two bowls. Pour 1/4 cup pecan milk over each bowl.

Divide sliced banana, pecan halves and dried tart cherries between each

bowl and drizzle with 2 tablespoons honey. Serve immediately.

Cherry Pecan Energy Bites Makes: 10-12 energy bites Ingredients: 1 cup toasted pecan halves or pieces 1 cup dried cherries 4 medjool dates, pitted

1/4 cup old-fashioned oats 1 tablespoon cacao powder, plus additional, for coating (optional) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions: In bowl of food processor, combine toasted pecans, dried cherries, dates, oats, cacao powder and vanilla extract.

Pulse until ingredients begin to bind and form loose, dough-like ball.

Roll into 1-inch balls. Roll balls in additional cacao powder, if desired, and transfer to airtight container. Refrigerate until ready to serve, up to seven days.

Note: To make gluten-free, substitute 1/4 cup of certified gluten-free old-fashioned oats. *Heart-Check certification does not apply to recipes.

Brie Larson uses her ‘Captain Marvel’ powers for diversity

Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

to see the latest adaptation of her book (there have been previous movie versions as well as a stage play).

I would think my familiarity with the source material would count more than my gender in rendering an honest, informed critical opinion.

As a comic book reader for 50 years, I am extremely familiar with Larson’s character, Carol Danvers. I picked up the first issue of “Ms. Marvel” back in the 1970’s and followed Danvers’ adventures all the way to her days with the X-Men. Carol Danvers is a fascinating character, one who has lost and gained so much in her life. That’s why I feel I am qualified to review the film and, if offered the chance, to interview the cast.

Brie Laron’s requirements have opened doors, though, for experienced writers who haven’t gotten the opportunity to do interviews for high-profile films. That doesn’t mean white male reviewers need to get kicked to the curb. There is enough room for everyone at the interview table.

ne notable superhero already is trying to save the world in the weeks leading up to her first solo film.

Brie Larson, who plays the title role in the upcoming “Captain Marvel” movie, is taking a hands-on approach regarding her press interviews. As Yahoo Finance pointed out, she insisted that the selected journalists not be “predominantly male and white.” For her recent interview with Marie Claire, for instance, she handpicked writer Keah Brown.

As a freelance writer, I have worked the press junket circuit and sat in on countless “roundtable interviews” with celebrities.

Between 1998 and 2007, I covered films ranging from “The Rugrats Movie” to the cinematic adaptation of “Rent.” As a fan of the “Men in Black” franchise, I was extremely happy talking with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones about the second film. A very honest roundtable interview with Ang Lee about “Brokeback Mountain” remains a fond memory.

Print/online critics like myself are often segregated into makeshift conference rooms

away from the radio and TV journalists. In most cases, men and women of all races are equally represented at the interview tables.

Depending on the film, younger, non-professional writers at the high school and college level also are invited to interview the available talent. That’s especially true at events like the San Diego Comic-Con, where diversity is quite visible. In my experience, it has never been a case of me sitting at a table exclusively with other white guys.

I also took exception with Larson’s observation last year that “A Wrinkle in Time” was not made for white men of a certain age.

Moore On Life Props for Valentine’s Day. Thank goodness you came along and created a legitimate excuse to get me out of the kitchen.

Truth is I don’t need a reason to get out and eat. My excuses begin on Friday.

Friday: It’s the celebration of the end of the week. Everyone knows you eat out. It’s written right there in the Good Book: And the Lord created the earth and saw it was going well, but by week’s end He was famished from making all those dandelions and mosquitoes. So on the fifth day He created Friday and lo, fast food establishments came into existence. But lo again, they were not fast enough. So He took a rib from the BBQ Shack and created the drive-through window.

As for Saturday; it’s basically the same as Friday just spelled differently. Everyone eats out on Saturday, don’t argue, it’s just the way it is.

Sunday is a day of rest. No one cooks on Sunday; it’s sinful. We eat our leftovers from Friday and Saturday.

Monday: The beginning of the workweek saps us of energy. There is scant enough left to stagger to the Golden Arches and mumble, “One McMeal…gasp…hold onions…wheeze…supersized.” Collapse.

Tuesday’s the slowest day of the business week.

That’s when all the specials are offered by food chains to boost business. They entice thrifty people like us with: 10 percent off Tuesday, Two-ForOne Tuesday, Kids Eat Free Tuesday (we have been kicked out of many an establishment trying to cash in on that one) and of course, Taco Tues-

day. We have to take advantage of the savings or we might as well take a wad of bills and flush them down the ol’ honey pot, which coincidentally is where you’ll find us after Taco Tuesday.

Wednesday is hump day! We celebrate by eating out to keep the economy buzzing. I like to think of it as my civic duty.

Thursday: There’s gotta be a holiday of some sort. Bingo! Google said it was, Rare Disease Day. We’ll celebrate by going into an unknown restaurant; ordering food cooked by strangers with uncertain hygiene habits and possibly contract a rare case of salmonella.

Fortunately, this year Valentine’s Day fell on Thursday, but of course my husband made no reservations. All the nice places were booked; the others had lines around the block to their drivethrough windows. Instead he took me to a romantic little place. We loaded up.
