Ceremonies to mark anniversary of 9/11 attacks Call it Patriot Day. Call it National Day of Service and Remembrance. Call it a day of vowing to never forget those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. People across the area will take time on dates around Sept. 11 to pay tribute to the victims of those terrorist attacks, the first responders who came to help, and first responders everywhere who continue to serve on a daily basis. Here are the events that local groups have created to maintain awareness: Ceremony in Florissant A September 11th Remembrance Ceremony will be presented at 7 pm Sept. 11 at Florissant Valley V.F.W. Post, located at 410 Rue St Francois in Florissant. The event will be a remembrance of those who died on Sept. 11, 2001, and recognition of local firefighters, police officers and first responders. The ceremony will feature presentation of colors, singing of God Bless America, an opening prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, a welcome by V.F.W. Post 4105 Commander Tony Laprocina, words from guest speaker Tom Schneider, mayor of Florissant, a closing prayer, a gun salute, the playing of Taps, and retiring the colors. Officials from across North County have been invited to the event, which is open to the public. Laprocina said this will be the third year the post has hosted the event. Prior to that, it was presented at the Civic Center in Florissant. The gun salute

and singing of God Bless America have been added for this year. “You have to look around to even find a 9/11 ceremony,” he said. “We should always remember that a lot of innocent people lost their lives that day, and the many firefighters and policemen who went in there just doing their jobs and lost their lives. We need to show appreciation and honor them any way we can.” City events in O’Fallon A Patriot Day Ceremony will be presented beginning at 8:30 am. Sept. 11 at the 9/11 monument outside the O’Fallon Police Department at 100 N. Main St. The ceremony will honor first responders and remembering the victims of the terrorist attacks. “It is intended to not only honor those who died on Sept. 11, but honor all of our first responders – police, firefighters, ambulance personnel – for everything they do for us each day,” said Tom Drabelle, a spokesman for the city of O’Fallon. The ceremony will include a speech from O’Fallon Police Chief Roy Joachimstaler, raising of colors, and laying of flowers at the memorial. A sounding of all of the sirens from the emergency vehicles on site will conclude the event. Representatives from the O’Fallon Police Department, O’Fallon Fire Protection District, St. Charles County Ambulance District and other area agencies will attend. O’Fallon will also host National Days
