Hazelwood Teacher Reflects

By Shawn Clubb When people come out to the free summer concerts at Creve Couer Park in Maryland Heights, they will enjoy the music while sitting outside near the serene waters of Creve Couer Lake. They will also be expanding their horizons. When the performers get booked for the series, the Maryland Heights Cultural Arts Commission looks for more than your typical cover band. “The concerts are a variety of entertainment,” said Mary Vaughan, director of the Maryland Heights Parks and Recreation Department. “The Cultural Arts Commission wants to give people the opportunity to hear music they wouldn’t usually hear.” The styles might include jazz, swing, big band and world music, among others. This season, the concerts feature jazz quartet Good 4 the Soul on June 20, the “newgrass” sounds of Clusterpluck on July 18, singer-songwriter Kevin Bilchik on Aug. 15, and an eclectic blend of music from Lunar Levitation on Sept. 19. Each concert will begin at 7 pm at the Tremayne Shelter near Sailboat Cove at the north end of Creve Coeur Park. Good 4 the Soul plays a range of jazz, including smooth jazz, electric jazz and classic jazz. The group includes bass-

ist John King, who founded the band in 2002, drummer James Jackson, guitarist Shaun Robinson and pianist Adaron “Pops” Jackson. Clusterpluck is comprised of five members who each write music and play multiple instruments. Their music is a blend that incorporates pop, country and rock ‘n’ roll. Bilchik, a native and still resident of St. Louis, says he has a voice that “was just made to sing the blues.” Lunar Levitation was formed by a group of friends in 2011 in St. Louis. They describe their music as a mix of classic rock, pop, blues and other styles. They perform songs from across the decades back to the ‘60s, and their own original music. “We started in 2001 or 2002 having concerts,” Vaughan said. “They’ve been around for a while and they are very well received. People love them. They count on them. They bring their picnic dinner and wine and soda. They sit there in their folding chair and they just kick back and enjoy the music.” “It’s a great setting to be right there next to Creve Couer Lake. There’s a nice cool breeze that comes off the lake. It’s nice to sit there and enjoy the music.” A patriotic concert by the St. Louis

Big Band will be presented from 7-9pm July 1 at Maryland Heights Centre, 2344 McKelvey Rd. The Big Band will deliver “A Fanfare to America” as the free show. An added feature for the lakeside concerts will be pre-concert entertainment for kids. There will be balloon animals from 6:30-7:30pm June 20, music by Babaloo from 6-7pm July 18, a performance by See SUMMER CONCERTS RETURN page 2
