A chance to taste great food and give to a great cause

By Shawn Clubb The McGartland and Lipka families launched The Taste In Ferguson last year with hopes of putting on a family-friendly event and raising funds for scholarships. The event included 18 food vendors, wine and beer samplings, 12 children’s activities, five artists creating their artwork live, music and various other activities. They had hoped that as many as 350 people might turn out. Attendance was closer to 600. “It was well above our expectations, having that kind of turnout,” said Bob McGartland, who, along with Linda Lipka, founded the event. The event is back for a second year and it continues to grow. “We’re already up to 21 vendors and a couple of more that I’m waiting to hear back from,” McGartland said. “Last year, we sold it out. We want to try to do the same this year.” The Taste In Ferguson will be from 3 to 6pm June 29 at the Savoy Banquet Center, 119 South Florissant Road. Tickets cost $20 each or $250 for VIP tickets. They can be purchased at Corner Coffee House, Robinwood Automotive or through the website at thetasteinferguson.com. The vendors who have committed thus far for this year’s event are Breakaway Café, Christie’s Jamaican Food, Corner Coffee House, Cornerstone
Bakery, Cork Wine Bar, Cose Dolci Bakery, De.lish Cheesecake Bakery & Café, Drake’s Place, El Palenque Mexican Restaurant & Cantina, Faraci Pizza, Ferguson Brewing Company Restaurant & Pub, Goody Goody Dinner, Marley’s Bar & Grill, Mayuri India Restaurant, Mimi’s Subway Bar & Grill, Papa Murphy’s Pizza, Paul’s Market, Piecraft, Schnucks Markets, Vincenzo’s Italian Ristorante, Whistle Stop, and Wilsing Design and Desserts. Lipka noted that the event is called “The Taste In Ferguson,” and not the Taste “of ” Ferguson, because they want to keep it welcoming to any restaurants that want to participant, not just those located in Ferguson. Food vendors will not be the only taste at the event, McGartland said. “We’ve added a few new things,” he said. “One of them is we’re adding Eddie Schmidt from Le Cordon Bleu culinary schools. He and his students are going to do food demonstrations during the event.” The event will also feature a performance by children’s entertainer Babaloo. Paul Cerame Auto Group is the premier sponsor for the event. The Taste In Ferguson raises money for The Robbie McGartland Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Samantha Lipka Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Robbie McGartland fund was set
up at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School. McGartland was shot to death at age 20 in 2012. The scholarship money helps offset tuition expenses for families who have children enrolled at the school. The Samantha Lipka scholarship was started in 2007 for seniors in the Ferguson-Florissant School District. She was killed in a traffic crash at age 17. “In our children’s honor, we are able to help other children move on in their See THE TASTE IN FERGUSON page 2
