A magnet for bargain hunters Back by popular demand, the Overland Farmers Market opened for its seventh successful season on Saturday, May 10 with new vendors offering fresh produce, locally raised grass-fed beef, sweet Missouri honey and fresh-bakery goods, plus original arts, crafts, live music and a unique “Junk-a-Rama.” “Most of our vendors are local producers of fruits, vegetables and fresh meat products, in addition to those offering crafts, living plants, gardening products and other consumer goods,” said Richard A. Kilzer, president of the Overland Farmers Market Board of Directors. “We’re a magnet for bargain hunters and lovers of local produce, plus merchandise you can’t find anywhere else,” said Kilzer. The Overland Farmers Market will be open every Saturday, until Oct. 25, from 8am-12:30pm in the city parking lot on Woodson Road about one mile north of Page Avenue near the intersection of Midland Boulevard. Admission is free. Ample free parking is available. Vendors include Nagl Farms, producer of hormone-free beef, lamb, vegetables and home-made soaps on 323 acres in Belle, Mo. Cats Gardens, a boutique that offers bird feeders, birdhouses, unusual houseplants, different incenses and home décor items; beautiful, hand-made Jewelry by Bobbi; and
hand-crafted items made by Hearts & Hands. Folk singer Jessica Womack provided live music on opening day and there will continue to be a stable of musicians every Saturday during the entire season. Special performances will by given by Daddy Mellow & Friends, The Hot Flashes’, an all-female rock band, and The Rick Speir Band, just to name a few. The Overland Farmers Market is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization managed by volunteers. The Market will be open every Saturday morning through Oct. 25, 2014. It is a popular attraction in the historic Overland area. More information is available at www.overlandfarmersmarket.com. The city of Overland, with a population of about 18,000, has a notable history as the origination point of The Overland trail that wagon trains followed west to California. It was first settled in the 1820s when travelers stayed overnight at a shady place known as Overland Park. Frontiersman Daniel Boone built a cabin near what is today Wyland Elementary School in Overland; a plaque identifies where the cabin stood. Boone attracted other explorers to the area, including a settler in 1844 named Dennis Lackland, for whom a local street is named. A one-room schoolhouse was built in 1946 and the
rustic McElhinney Log House (maintained today by the Overland Historical Society) was built in the 1850s. During the Civil War, Ritenour School District was established for pioneer children. By 1919, the town name was shortened to Overland. The city was incorporated in 1939. “The Overland Farmers Market is a tradition for our city and the St. Louis region,” said Kilzer, who manages the market’s volunteer team, vendors and See OVERLAND FARMERS MARKET page 2
