Governor Little and State Candidates Visit Malad On Saturday, the Oneida County Republicans hosted a slate of Republican candidates for next month’s election. Governor Brad Little, Speaker of the House Scott Bedke, State Controller Brandon Woolf, and Superintendent of Schools Debbie Critchfield all spoke to the assembled crowd of voters, party supporters, and the interested public at large. The American Legion Post 65 posted the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. The MHS band and choir opened the event with music. After an introduction to each of the speakers from Mike Hess, the candidates took turns introducing themselves and laying out their primary concerns for the state and counties such as Oneida. Earlier in the evening, questions from the crowd had been collected. A number of them were selected by the hosts, and moderator County Attorney Cody Brower asked each of the officials in turn to respond to some of them. The questioning started with Governor Little, who was asked “What do you think is the most pressing issue facing the state of Idaho?” In a response that will sound familiar to residents of Oneida county, Little quickly responded “Growth, no question. Along with that comes questions related to roads, sewer, water, schools. Our state is currently the fastest growing state in the country, and growth is without a doubt our biggest concern.” The next question was to current Speaker of the House Scott Bedke, who is running to replace Janice McGeachin as Idaho’s next Lieutenant Governor. Bedke first won election in 2002 to the state legislature, and has served as the Speaker of the House since 2012. The question was “What do you intend to focus on as Lieutenant Governor?” In response, Bedke responded, “I’m going to GOVERNOR LITTLE AND STATE CANDIDATES VISIT MALAD On Page 9
NEWS IN BRIEF Evan McMullin’s Independent bid for Senate seen as sign
Evan McMullin’s run for Mike Lee’s Senate seat in Utah is being watched carefully by both parties. McMullin has expressed his disaffection for the Trump wing of the Republican party, but also stressed that he would not caucus with Democrats. While his bid for the seat is an underdog one, it’s within a margin of possibility. If elected, McMullin would join Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Angus King of Maine as the only Independents serving in the body. Some on both sides of the aisle fear this would give an Independent bloc disproportionate power to affect the passage of legislation.
Link between hair products and uterine cancer
A recent study has established a doubled risk for uterine cancers among users of hair-straightening products. Previous studies had linked the use of such products to an increased risk of a number of types of cancer, but this study suggests a striking doubling of uterine cancer risk for users. The exact nature of the link between cancers and the chemicals used in hair straightening has not yet been determined, though the increased risk is clear.

Mayor Speaks to Stone and MES students about Cities Mayor Hawkins traveled to the Stone Elementary to teach the second and third grade students what it takes to run a city as she read “Friends City.” With each page, the students were eager to ask questions and share their own understanding of what city life is like. While most of the students that attend Stone Elementary don’t live within the city limits, Mayor Hawkins felt it was important for them to still learn about what it takes to run a city. She shared, “Who knows, maybe one day they will live in the city and they will run for mayor themselves!” She conMAYOR SPEAKS TO STUDENTS On Page 2

A woman in Newport Beach, California saw an ophthalmologist about pain and discomfort in her eye. As the doctor examined beneath her eyelid, he was shocked to find a large clump of contact lenses—eventually totaling 23— from her eye. The patient, a senior who had worn contacts for over 30 years, was surprised to realize she had forgotten to remove her previous contacts before placing new ones in her eye for nearly a month. The doctor explained that becoming desensitized to contacts over time is common, but he had never seen anything like this incident.
Ted White dies at 96
In a year in which a number of high-profile actors and actresses have passed away, it’s worth noting the passing of stuntman and actor Ted White, who passed away at 96 after a long career. White worked as the stunt double for John Wayne and Fess Parker, among many others, in dozens of Hollywood films throughout the 20th century, though his is probably best known for his imposing turn as Jason Vorhees in Friday the 13th the Final Chapter, which was not the final chapter.
