Grandparents Only

Not recommended for parents and kids

By Dotty Thorpe Evanson

The girls had dance practice at the high school last week. Elle, the six-year-old, was to be there at 4:45 on Tuesday. We pulled up a few minutes early. It had been a long day, so I asked Hadley, the tenyear-old to run in with Elle while I waited out front. About halfway to the front door, Elle decided she could do it alone. She stopped and actually hollered at Hadley, “I can walk myself!” Hadley hollered right back, “Grandma told me to take you in!” Evidently, those were fighting words. Elle turned around and popped Hadley, adding some emphasis to her statement, and proceeded to the door unattended. Independence! It was not 1776, but there was fire in that exchange even though it had all started so peacefully. History classes had

taught me a thing or two, so I called Hadley back and let the rebel proceed on her own. She evidently made it and when dance was over an hour later no one went in to gather her up. She came running to the car with a smile and a medal! Victory on all counts. Now the medal was not rewarding her independence or her rude exchange with her sister, but rather was for a team competition held the week before. All the dancers got one. However, the timing of the medal and the “I can walk myself” declaration coincided to create some attitude. That same day, I had taken Grandma Red into the hospital for a routine check-up with the podiatrist. Grandma Red no longer drives, which drives her crazy. She does not like relying on others to get her around. After the appointment, she said, “I think I’ll walk myself up to the hospital

SCHOOL MENU next time.” That would be a walk, but I don’t doubt she has the spirit to make it happen. America was blessed with a fighting spirit and inspired leadership during our Revolution which allowed us all to receive our “medal” of independence and yes, it brought some attitude. There is just something in us all that makes us want to walk our own path. Currently, there are 43 million Ukrainians who want that same thing. Over six million have fled their home country rather than have a dictator direct their walk. Geography alone has put them in their present situation. Hopefully, their fighting spirit, love of country and support from the free world will return them to a peaceful restitution, smiles and Victory on all counts. After all, young or old we want to walk our own path and that makes for the Good Life!
