As they traveled to Soda Springs, Wednesday, May 4, the team came out with a strong start, scoring 7 runs in the first inning. Riglee Petersen was first to score for the Lady Dragons as Madi Green hit a single ground ball to center field. Teammates Green, Hallie Horsley, Kaitlyn Pickett, Maggie Willie, Adley Kimberling and Beth McClain scored runs with their strong, consistent hitting as well as taking advantage of their opponents' mistakes.

The Malad softball team fell into a rhythm in the fourth inning, bringing in twelve runs to bring their final score of the night to 24 runs. Midway through the inning, Horsley stepped up to the plate and, with the bases loaded, hit a home run to center field, her 4th of the season, batting in Petersen, Brylee Oglesbee and Green, bringing the score to Malad 19, Soda Springs 2. Teagan Daniels, Kaitlyn Tanner, Kaysha Beck, Bostyn Combs, and Petersen brought in an additional 5 runs to bring Malad’s final run count to 24.

Horsley led the Lady Dragons in hitting, getting 3 hits on 4 at bats, including both a triple and home run, scoring 3 runs and 5 RBIs. Horsley wasn’t only on top of her game offensively, but defensively as well. The sophomore first baseman led the team with putouts, stopping 7 of her opponents from advancing past first base throughout the game. Freshman Combs also had a successful night at the plate, batting 100% with 3 hits on 3 at bats and earning 3 runs.

Petersen and Beck split the time on the pitcher's mound, each throwing for 2 innings.

Softball seniors, Maggie Willie, Gill Leckie, and Madi Green

Petersen allowed 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 3 opponents as she faced 9 batters. Beck allowed 2 runs on 3 hits against 8 batters.

The team played their final home conference game, Friday, May 6, beginning the night by honoring graduating senior players, Maggie Willie and Madi Green, and senior team manager, Gill Leckie, as well as recognizing the senior players from Soda Springs.

Green started off her offensive game in a big way, smacking a fly ball to center field for a home run on her at bat of the game. With Oglesbee on second, Green’s run brough the tally to two to take the lead at the end of the first inning. Soda Spring answered with 3 runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead until the Lady Dragons went to bat again. McClain and then Oglesbee, managed to score runs on consecutive wild pitches, followed by Green stealing home plate for 3 runs in the second inning. Adley Kimberling was first to bat in the third inning, hitting a double to center field to start off Malad’s offense with Graycee Goddard following with another double to bat Kimberling in. Goddard, McClain, Petersen and Horlsey all worked their way around the bases to bring the score to 10 to 3 at the bottom of the third. In the final inning, Petersen hit a homer to left field with McClain on third base to earn their final 2 runs of the game.

Green and Petersen led the team in hitting for the game, each with 4 hits on their 4 at bats for 2 runs, including a home run for both players. Beck took to the pitcher’s mound for all 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out 4 of the 26 batters she faced.

The MHS Lady Dragons finish up the season with a record of 18 wins and 1 loss. They are undefeated in the conference, moving into the top seed of the District Softball Tournament, beginning Monday, May 9 in Malad, as they play Soda Springs in their opening game.

Baseball seniors with their parents, Bridger Bastian, Kyler Horsley and Vincent Evans

Malad’s baseball season is quickly coming to a close. The team played their final games of the regular season on May 4 in American Falls and May 5 in Bear Lake, bringing home the win both nights to end the season on a 5 game winning streak.

Defense dominated the game as Malad played against the Beavers in American Falls, Wednesday, May 4. The MHS baseball team allowed only 3 runs over 7 innings. Stetson Higley took to the pitcher’s mound to start the game, earning 2 of the 3 outs of the first three innings. Catcher Gaiden Combs covered home plate well, leading the team in putouts with 12 outs on 12 total chances. In the bottom of the 5th inning, left fielder Ryan Hubbard picked up a single hit to throw the ball into Combs to grab the third out at home plate.

The Dragons trailed behind American Falls for most of the game until in the 6th inning when they finally put runs up on the scoreboard to take the lead. Kyler Horsley scored the first run, crossing home plate as Vinny Evans hit a line drive to center field with Higley close on his heels. Ryan Hubbard, next in the batting lineup, sacrificed a pop fly to center field, giving Combs the chance to score another run for the Dragons. Evans scored the final run of the game on the following play as Braylinn Tripp hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing the score to Malad 4, American Falls 2. Malad only allowed one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the win over the Beavers.

In their final regular season game, the MHS baseball team traveled to Bear Lake where they took the lead early in the game. Bridger Bastian scored on an error to earn the first run in the opening inning. Jaden Ward then lined a fielder’s choice to bat in Combs in the second inning, followed by runs from Hubbard and Ward on a double hit by Bastian. Bastian scored the final run of the inning on a groundout to shortstop by Chase Briggs.

Out on the field, Malad was quick with their defense to keep their lead over Bear Lake. In the bottom of the second, with the count full and runners on first and second, Bear Lake hit the ball to Horsley at shortstop. Horsley grabbed the ball and fired it into Briggs at second base for the out. Briggs turned and threw it on to Evans at first to make the double play. Evans grabbed the third out of the inning as Bear Lake hit a ground out to first base.

The team had a strong hitting game, Combs scoring 2 runs on 3 hits and 3 at bats with 2 RBIs, Horsley scoring 3 runs on 3 hits and 5 at bats and Bastian getting 3 runs on 2 hits and 5 at bats with 3 RBIs. Timmy Jensen pitched for the Dragons, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits in 4 innings, striking out 3. Braylinn Tripp came in from the bull pen to relief pitch the final 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits.

The Dragon Baseball team finished the season with 10 wins and 6 losses and undefeated in their conference matchups. Coach Bo Clark shared, “I’m just proud of these boys and how hard they have worked. We have had our share of ups and downs but they pulled through it all.”

WRESTLING

Last weekend was the Idaho USA wrestling state tournament for both Freestyle and Greco. Freestyle and Greco are the styles of wrestling that are done in the Olympics and the styles that are wrestled around the world.

Rustin Montgomery and Drake Morrison were awarded their triple crown awards that they won for the 2021 wrestling season. Winning a triple crown is a huge accomplishment, Rustin and Drake are the first 2 Idaho triple crown winners from Malad. To win a triple crown you must win all 3 state tournaments in a year. The state tournaments are held for each different style, Folkstyle, freestyle and Greco. Rustin and Drake brought home the gold in all 3 styles during the 2021 season.

This year at the state tournament 3 brothers of steel competed in the 2 day tournament. Friday was the Greco tournament. Kyler Blaisdell took 4th place in the 8u 54lb bracket. Rustin Montgomery is the state champion in 10u 93lbs and Drake Morrison is the 13u 103lb Greco state champion.

The freestyle tournament was held on Saturday. Drake Morrison came away the champion at 13u while Rustin and Kyler both took 2nd place in their brackets.

Winning the state tournament earns Drake Morrison a spot on Team Idaho when they travel to Indianapolis in June to compete at the National School Boy Duals.

“They all did a great job. These styles are not the way we wrestle for most of the year so the boys stepped out of their comfort zones and did really well.”
