2. CHAIRPERSON’S STATEMENT As the Chair of the Arts Sub-Committee of Governing Body at the Cork Institute of Technology I was privileged to work on the Institute’s first Arts Strategy and to monitor its development of greater visibility of the richness of arts practice and engagement in the constituent colleges.

CIT is a model of an Arts-rich Institute with its dedicated arts spaces, theatres, collections, exhibitions, and performances, all available to staff, students and the general public. It is a model of practice in the presence of visual art in corridors, lecture rooms, and offices, with music and drama ringing from theatres and rehearsal rooms.

While we all realise the need for, the importance of, and the values of the arts, we realise that a vibrant presence will flourish when it is supported and sustained by the Governing Body, staff, students and the arts community of the city.

Emelie Fitzgibbon

Chairperson, Arts Sub-Committee of Governing Body Nominee of the Arts Council of Ireland to CIT Governing Body Emelie FitzGibbon is the founder of Graffiti Theatre Company and was its Artistic Director from 1984 to 2017. She was also a founder and a Board Member of the National Association for Youth Drama. She has published in the field of Educational Theatre and given lectures and keynote addresses in the USA, Australia, Hong Kong, and London.

3. PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD The promotion and fostering of the Arts at CIT is as old as the history of the Institute itself going all the way back to the founding of the Royal Cork Institution by Rev Thomas Hincks in the beginning of the 19th century on Cork’s South Mall. The RCI laid the foundation of the modern CIT, soon to become the Munster Technological University. It is fitting that the CIT Crawford College of Art & Design (CCAD) has developed 46 Grand Parade as both an education and exhibition space a stone’s throw from the birthplace of the RCI in 1807. Fittingly as well the tradition of simultaneously promoting profession focussed education in science and technology alongside sponsoring the creative arts is a tradition which has been proudly inherited by CIT to the present day. The status of the Arts is assured within the Institute by having a dedicated sub-committee of Governing Body specifically charged with promoting the Arts.

CIT is proud to proclaim its status as an Arts rich Institute and the focus of the Governing Body Arts Sub-Committee is geared towards sustaining and developing Arts practices across the Institute and profiling this activity among the staff and student community in the Institute and more widely in the wider Cork and Munster community. This past year has seen continuing engagement with the public via a full catalogue of exhibitions, shows and recitals delivered and facilitated by students and staff alike.

Many of these performers were drawn from the ranks of the STEM side of the house but the creative core was anchored, as always, by students and staff of the CIT CSM and the CIT CCAD. Twinning Town and Gown is an aspiration for many third level institutions. It is a permanent feature of CIT’s portfolio via the ongoing and enthusiastic work of our colleagues and students in the creative and performing arts. The Governing Body Arts Sub-Committee is privileged to be able to bask in the reflected glow of such professionals, and equally acknowledges the pivotal role of the CIT Arts Office in integrating the Arts into the daily life of the Institute. The CIT Arts programme has also facilitated and supported local schools and charities over the year. The ongoing support of CIT Governing Body is greatly appreciated by the Arts community in CIT. Deirtear gur ar scáth a chéile a mhairimid. Má’s fíor san, tá an t-ádh linn go bhfuil féith na n-ealaínn chomh láidir sin san Institiúid. Míle buíochas do gach aon cheoltóir, aisteoir, ealaíontóir is léiritheoir a chuidigh linn i rith na bliana le clú na h-Institúide mar ionad láidir cultúrtha a choimeád os comhair an phobail.

4. ARTS MATTER Building on a long history of arts education and development in Cork, CIT is committed to the ongoing development and growth of arts provision and participation opportunities for our diverse student, staff and external community. As an Arts rich institute of higher education, we are committed to embedding arts awareness and participation into our student experience, teaching and learning, research and external engagement activities.

We are very proud of the fact that our students have many and diverse opportunities to experience the arts through direct curriculum provision and an extensive annual programme of arts events across our campuses.

At CIT our students and their learning and development experiences matter. Whether a student is studying Engineering, Science, Maths, Business, Computing or Humanities we aim to ensure that all students benefit from a culture of learning that is placed in an institute that really values and gives high status to the Arts. We want our students to graduate with a developed sense of self, an ability to think creatively, an increased cultural capital and global awareness, broadened horizons and a heightened level of humanity to complement their academic knowledge and skills. The world is a fast-changing place and we use our collective creativity, as educators, to ensure that our graduates are ready to make their contributions through their work and citizenship.

Equally, we are very conscious of our responsibility to our staff community and are creating a workplace that provides diverse and accessible opportunities for engagement with arts, recognising that such opportunities can significantly enrich our working lives and our wellbeing.

Building and sustaining a range of external partnerships with arts and creative organisations has extended both our reach and impact, enabling us to amplify CIT’s arts offerings to wider communities. These partnerships have equally served to challenge and grow our thinking and have contributed in turn to enhancing our teaching and learning, student engagement and research activities for both students and colleagues. A true win-win situation.

CCAD and CSM are important and substantial constituent communities of CIT. Alongside CCAD and CSM, CIT has an excellent and established Arts Office and many dedicated arts spaces. Together, all of these continue to present significant opportunity and potential for CIT to lift the status of the Arts locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. This is a fact evidenced in this first annual report from the Arts Sub-Committee of CIT Governing Body.

I would like to simply thank my colleagues Ms Sarah Morey, Mr Kevin Tuohy and Ms Sharon McCarthy, the Arts Office team, for their work in compiling this report and for their ongoing enthusiasm and creativity in the important work that they do, supporting CIT’s strategic commitment to the Arts.

5. CIT ART COLLECTION / REGISTRAR’S INTRODUCTION We in CIT are extremely proud of the broad range of meaningful opportunities which our Arts rich Institute offers students and staff to engage with the arts and to develop their artistic talents.

Working in close collaboration with CCAD and the CIT Arts Office, the Office of the Registrar & Vice President for Academic Affairs has purchased art works from the annual CCAD degree shows over almost three decades.

The CIT Registrar’s Collection now forms the majority of the CIT Art Collection, which also features a number of other collections including - CIT CSM Collection, CIT CCAD Collection, Artist Gifts, ArtsFest Purchase Prize, Robert Short Gifts, and the John Sisk & Son and Murray Ó Laoire Architects Commission.

One really has to attend the opening night of the annual Crawford Degree Show in order to experience fully the joy, excitement, and anticipation as our soon to be graduates proudly show their final year exhibitions. Since 2018, I have been afforded the privilege of an advance viewing of the show, as the latest acquisitions for the Registrar’s Collection are identified. This is an immensely fulfilling but almost impossible task, such is the quality of the work on display.

The soon to be graduates of 2020 have had to deal with abrupt and significant change this semester, as they dealt with extraordinary circumstances which impacted on their lives personally, artistically and educationally. And while our experience of the Crawford Degree Show must be a virtual one for now, the online show is testament to the creativity, resilience, and entrepreneurship shown by the Class of 2020. I look forward to a time when we can gather together in Sharman Crawford Street to recognise and celebrate their unique achievement and endeavour.

Over many years, the Registrar’s Collection has developed into an impressive repository of work, accessible on all campuses, and with many benefits.

Our graduates receive a significant boost at the early stages of their careers, not only financially, but also (and arguably more importantly) in terms of our recognition of their achievements and potential as they embark on the next stage of their artistic journey.

Across all campuses, the Institute’s learning spaces, offices and recreational areas are enhanced for students, staff and visitors through the display of this collection. And what an eclectic collection it is, showcasing extraordinary talent in painting, ceramics, sculpture, print, photography, and mixed-media work. There is something there for everyone, an aspect which is crucial in heightening our community’s awareness of the importance and value of the arts.

Moreover, the presence of the Registrar’s Collection on all campuses highlights the unique and important contribution which Crawford College of Art & Design has made to Cork Institute of Technology. As this momentous time for the Institute, it is pertinent to note that its original seat of learning was the Crawford Municipal Technical Institution (CMTI), located in that building on Sharman Crawford Street which we still affectionately know as ‘The Crawford’.

Thus, the educational legacy has endured, from CMTI to CRTC to CIT. We now look forward to the Registrar’s Collection continuing to celebrate the value and contribution of CCAD, not only to MTU, but also to arts, culture and society, both nationally and internationally.

2013 | Charcoal on Paper | 78 x 104cm CIT Registrar’s Collection Irene Meade treats her practice as a portal through which she, and by extension a viewer, is allowed, in a most literal sense of the word, to study. Simplicity, honesty, and the subjective nature of how we, as individuals, encounter a piece, or another person, are key elements in her Practice. Utilizing drawing, video and photography, Meade’s pieces strive not to mirror, but to explore truth.

Awards on graduating from CIT included the CIT Registrar’s Purchase Prize. Senior lecturer at Liverpool Hope University (2017 - present) Exhibits regularly across UK, with works in public and private collections.

CIT CORK SCHOOL OF MUSIC AT A GLANCE

Pause (Website: csm.cit.ie/pause) Coordinated by a voluntary committee, Pause is a platform for local artists and groups to showcase their work, creativity, and imagination to the general public. Situated on the ground floor of CIT CSM, the space hosts ten exhibitions each year representing a wide range of styles, techniques, and artforms.

Art Collection CIT CSM is host to over 150 visual artworks, including artworks from the CIT Collection, pieces donated through the Pause space, and artworks on loan from various benefactors.

crawford.cit.ie CIT Crawford College of Art and Design is a vibrant multi-campus College which has been providing education in the arts for more than 100 years. Crawford graduates are among Ireland’s top artists, curators, designers, media practitioners, art therapists and art educators.

The Gallery at 46 Grand Parade is a creative space under the direction of CCAD and is located in the heart of Cork City. By hosting a vast range of activities, the Gallery seeks to inspire recognition of creative expression within all creative disciplines and to encourage learning within the college and community.

6.3 RORY GALLAGHER THEATRE CIT Bishopstown Campus

arts.cit.ie 120-seat dedicated performance space, tiered auditorium with proscenium-arch stage.

Managed by CIT Arts Office, this theatre is suitable for small to medium size theatrical productions, dance, live music (acoustic and amplified), screenings, presentations, seminars, public talks, recorded and streamed performances.

As an active engagement space, students are supported in producing and presenting Arts events in the venue, giving them experience in event production and offering a platform to explore creative outlets.

6.4 CIT BLACKROCK CASTLE OBSERVATORY Castle Road, Cork

bco.ie CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory (BCO) is a science and discovery centre housed in an iconic 16th century landmark on Cork’s inner harbour, that has welcomed over 1 million visitors since operations began in 2007.

BCO’s mission is to affect positive change in attitudes toward science, technology, engineering and maths in Ireland, and be recognised and respected as a centre of excellence in scientific research, education and outreach.

BCO contributes to the delivery of the CIT vision and mission providing: direct engagement with STEAM, culture and heritage stakeholders through year-round site activity and outreach, the coordination of Space Week Ireland and many other STEAM based projects and initiatives

CONCLUDING COMMENTS On Thursday March 12th 2020 at 11.30 Taoiseach of Ireland Leo Varadkar announced a shutdown of activities and life in Ireland as we knew it, and the Irish education system changed in ways never imagined. Theatres, art galleries and arts organisation closed their doors, and artists, arts practitioners, theatre makers, and musicians were denied any opportunity to make art or get a wage as a result of this decision.

This is the context in which this report was written and this is reflected in the data we have provided. A significant number of events did not take place and we look forward to including this data in the coming years. We also look forward to working with artists to reschedule their events and support them in their livelihood.

There is no denying that data is important, it paints a picture, creates a context for all the activities and measures outcomes which indicate the success of the investment. It reassures financial investors and provides comfort that there is a return for their funding. In this report there is no denying that that the quantitative data presents us with the numbers of events that have taken place and the number of engagements with these happenings. There is no doubt that these are impressive.

However it doesn’t tell the full story. Qualitative data is equally if not more important. It captures the standard of the Arts events that have taken place, the quality of the engagements, the impact and reach of these happening. Our challenge for the next report will be to capture and communicate this data for stakeholders. I look forward to working with my colleagues to ascertain how best we can capture this important information.

The questions I have are many. How do you measure the spectator’s joy and changed mood from hearing a Jazz big band, a solo artist singing or an orchestra playing? How do you measure the impact of theatre that reminds us our individual experiences, although unique, are part of the greater collective consciousness?

How do you measure psychological shifts into places of better mental health and wellbeing as a result of engagements with the Arts? How do we measure the benefit of laughing and collectively experiencing humour? How does one measure the impact an Arts event has on the learning journey of students and the formation of them as compassionate, open, resilient, engaged active citizens? I look forward to working with colleagues and Arts practitioners to find creative and useful solutions to these challenges.

Covid-19 has highlighted that we are citizens of a global village. We are so connected despite the global air miles between us. Our actions and decisions have a direct consequence on our global neighbours and our daily choices have a direct impact on the lives of others. The Arts played a crucial role in keeping us connected during the pandemic. The online experience offered a wonderful platform to view Arts events, lift spirits, and stay connected. We will all remember our Covid Whatsapp illustrations, videos, concerts, and live watch parties. There is no doubt it played an important role. However, for me personally it just didn’t feel right. It was like watching a Christmas Panto performed to a pre-recorded soundtrack without a live orchestra. The Arts needs people and people need to be connected.

This report is a celebration of CIT’s significant and impressive range of Arts activities, the connections we have with communities and Arts organisations, and the crucial role we play supporting them to continue their work. It highlights that we are embedded in the Arts agenda at a local, national, and international level.

On Friday 5th June 2020, President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins stated in a letter to all European leaders that “we are facing an emergency in the cultural sphere in terms of income, venues, public access, participation, and may I say social cohesion and fulfilment”. He echoes the concerns of The National Campaign for the Arts movement – #Save the Arts . We are at a very important time in our history in relation to the arts in Ireland and we need to advocate and be strong in our commitment to ensure we safeguard its future.

As CIT and IT Tralee become MTU we look forward to the increased funding and learning opportunities this brings to the South-west region. There is no denying that these are exciting times. However, we need to ensure that a high value is placed on arts education and it is recognised and supported as a key player in delivering the strategic objectives as outlined in the Technological Universities Research Network (TURN) report.

Let us not be complacent. This is a critical time for the arts. We all have a role to play to ensure that the arts survives this storm. Be part of the recovery story.
