Saturday 5 July 10am-5pm
10TH Anniversary!
A fun, family-friendly day out filled with immersive and interactive activities
Kent’s favourite historic event takes the city through a time-travelling adventure on Saturday 5 July. Come along with family and friends for a most merry day out!
Fanfares at the ready at 11am as the colourful medieval parade sets off from the Westgate Towers, along the High Street and finishing in the Cathedral Precincts with a short play performed by the Canterbury Shakespeare Festival actors.
Come along and cheer on the knights, monarchs and minstrels, jostling among merry pilgrims, medieval animals and magnificent giants, as well as local school children and community groups in their finest garb.
This year’s theme is The Canterbury Tales, a collection of twenty-four stories written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer between 1387 and 1400. The Medieval Pageant and Family Trail will focus on the pilgrims featured in Chaucer's famous stories, with themed activities, exciting locations to visit and plenty of tales to tell your family when you get home!
The Family Trail is an afternoon of medieval mayhem for all ages, with the Westgate Towers, The Beaney, St Augustine’s Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral Precincts, Westgate Gardens and many more welcoming visitors with a range of free activities. Some trail stops will be open from 10am – check canterburymedievalpageant.co.uk for details.
Meet historic characters, visit a medieval encampment, enjoy sword-fighting displays, musical performances, art and craft workshops and much more!
Visit as many stops on the special trail map as you like - if you collect 5 stamps, you receive a FREE giant chocolate coin from the Cathedral Shop in the Buttermarket. Allow a whole afternoon to complete the trail. If you have less time, visit the venues of your choice and don’t forget to collect your stamps!
The full trail leaflet will be available at the Canterbury Guided Tours stand in the Buttermarket, as well as at each trail stop. You can pick up a copy from The Beaney on Canterbury High Street from mid-June, or download your own from canterburymedievalpageant.co.uk
It’s fun for people of all ages, but some of our younger visitors might find the full trail too much. Look for the Little Legs route on the trail map, designed for those with buggies and a need for changing facilities.

Canterbury’s 17th century trailblazing playwright, poet, translator and spy for Charles II, is now commemorated in her home city with a beautiful bronze statue, sculpted by Christine Charlesworth and commissioned by the Canterbury Commemoration Society.
Aphra’s statue was unveiled outside The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge in the High Street in February 2025 by The Queen, and is now a very popular attraction with locals and visitors alike.
Aphra Behn was an extraordinary woman: thought to be the first known professional woman writer in English, she has inspired generations of women writers. Her groundbreaking work Oroonoko is thought to be one of the first novels in English. Between 1670 and 1690, she was also one of the most prolific playwrights in Britain.
Sculptor Christine Charlesworth chose to represent Aphra as the young woman she was when she left Canterbury, based on the only known authentic portrait of her: a line engraving by Robert White in 1728, after a lost portrait by painter John Riley (1646-1691).
flowers fall upon the tomb of Aphra Behn… for it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds.” A Room of One’s Own, 1929.
Look closely at Aphra’s statue and you’ll see clues to her life attached around her: a book in her hand, quill pen, ink and paper around her belt, the theatre mask behind her back, a small rolled-up message hidden away up her sleeve, and a page blown against the back of her skirts, as if from the future, inscribed with Virginia Woolf's tribute to her over two centuries later:
“All women together ought to let flowers fall upon the tomb of Aphra Behn… for it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds.”
Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own, 1929
Find out more about Aphra Behn and the work of the Canterbury Commemoration Society at cantcommsoc.co.uk
The flowing red cover used to conceal Aphra before she was unveiled by The Queen was expertly stitched by Ozge from Westgate Dry Cleaners & Tailoring in St Dunstan’s Street.
Ozge says: “It was such an honour to create the veil for Aphra Behn’s statue. As a female tailor and small business owner in Canterbury, being part of this moment that celebrates a trailblazing woman felt deeply meaningful.”

Marlowe Theatre
‘Bulkhead’ was designed by Gillinghamborn sculptor Rick Kirby as part of the 2003 Blok sculpture festival. Canterbury City Council bought the popular statue, which was moved to their offices in 2009 and re-erected in 2011 by the newly revamped Marlowe Theatre. Based on Christopher Marlowe’s famous description of Helen of Troy as "the face that launch'd a thousand ships", ‘Bulkhead’ was constructed using scrap metal recovered from ships along the Kentish coast.
The Marlowe Memorial ‘Kitty Marlowe’ Marlowe Theatre
The Marlowe Memorial Statue represents the Muse of Poetry and is nicknamed ‘Kitty Marlowe’ by locals (Christopher Marlowe was known as ‘Kit Marlowe’). Four Marlovian characters are below her: Tamburlaine, Barabas, Faustus and Edward II. It was sculpted by Onslow Ford in 1891 and sponsored by a committee that included the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson and the actor Sir Henry Irving.
River Stour, Westgate
Installed in September 2024, the new Alluvia replaced two previous incarnations on the bed of the river Stour. The LED-lit statue was created by the international artist Jason deCaires Taylor and references Sir John Millais’s celebrated painting of Shakespeare’s character Ophelia. It’s made from recycled glass and is fitted with sensors to measure the movement and pollution in the water flowing over it.
Geoffrey Chaucer
Corner of Best Lane and the High Street Unveiled in October 2016 to commemorate the ‘Father of English Literature’, Chaucer’s statue is sculpted by Kent-based Sam Holland ARBS. The large horse-hoof plinth is sculpted in bas-relief by Yorkshire-based Lynn O’Dowd and depicts 30 characters, each from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales but also linked to (and depicted as) a local person - can you spot Canterbury-born actor Orlando Bloom as The Young Squire?
Dave Lee
Marlowe Theatre/Friars Bridge
Local legend Dave Lee MBE (1947-2012) performed at more than 1,000 pantos at the Marlowe Theatre. His Dave Lee Happy Holidays Charity raised £2 million during his lifetime for ill and disabled children and their families in Kent. Hundreds, including the Lord Mayor, attended his funeral service at Canterbury Cathedral. His statue was unveiled in 2014, inscribed with his famous phrase: “Well, we’ll have to do it again, won’t we? Whoops!”
Junction of Longmarket and High Street
Your own lovely face can be the star of the city’s newest installation! Take a photo through the centre of The Point for a unique picture, especially when it’s lit up at night. Designed by local architect Andrew Clague and carved by stonemason Gary Newton, the 3.5m high Portland stone and stainless steel column was gifted to the city in April by the Rotary Club to mark their Centenary. It serves as a water bottle filling station, designed to help reduce single-use plastic. Longmarket used to be the site of a drinking fountain and horse trough. The inscription is from Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress: “Behold ye, how these crystal streams do glide, to comfort pilgrims by the highway-side.”
Created in Taiwan in the 1980s, bubble tea – also known as boba tea – has become a firm high street favourite.
The delicious combinations of flavours, colours and toppings make it a fun, versatile drink, perfect for picnics, riverside ambles, shopping pit-stops and family treats.
Bubble tea is typically made with a tea base, and milk, then sugar, flavourings or juice are added. The bubbles are the star ingredients: these can be chewy pearls of tapioca, made from the cassava plant or the ‘popping’ type with a delicate, gel-like skin that bursts with juice such as passion fruit, strawberry, mango, dragon fruit or kiwi.bubbles along with the drink.
In 2020, April 30 was officially declared as National Bubble Tea Day in Taiwan and is now celebrated the world over.

The 173rd Canterbury Cricket Week, the oldest surviving cricket festival in the world, is back at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence in Canterbury this June.
For the first time, a Kent Women match will begin Cricket Week at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, with the Horses’ first ever home Vitality Blast League Two match-up against Gloucestershire taking place on Friday 27 June at the home of Kent Cricket.
Kent Men’s Rothesay County Championship match with Northamptonshire, beginning two days later on Sunday 29 June, will be the red-ball leg of Canterbury Cricket Week in 2025, with Kent Cricket Community Team’s ever-popular Schools’ Day Out taking place on Day Two (Monday 30 June), giving over 1,000 local schoolchildren a free taste of County Championship cricket in the height of Summer.
Two days on from the scheduled finish of Kent vs. Northamptonshire, Kent Spitfires’ Vitality Blast showdown with Sussex Sharks, dubbed the ‘War of the Wealds’, will be the exciting finale to this Summer’s Canterbury Cricket Week on Friday 4 July.
Match tickets for Kent Men & Kent Women matches are available now via the Kent Cricket website.
The Spitfire Ground St Lawrence Old Dover Road CT1 3NZ kentcricket.co.uk
Kent Cricket is proud to announce that it has designated Kent Spitfires’ Vitality Blast fixture against Gloucestershire on Wednesday 18 June at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence as its annual Pride Match. Kent Cricket wants everyone from the LGBTQ+ communities across Kent to feel welcome at cricket matches.
Following the successful Pride Matches at The Spitfire Ground for the last two years, the T20 fixture, held during Pride Month, will be another opportunity to welcome all cricket followers, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. Kent Cricket is steadfast in their commitment to make the game of cricket accessible to all, and during Pride Month, they actively celebrate the LGBTQ+ community so they feel valued and welcome.
At this year’s Pride match, you will once again see players wearing Pride armbands, with rainbow-themed stumps and dedicated Pride FanKlappers will be handed out to spectators, too.
Tickets for Kent Spitfires vs. Gloucestershire are on sale now via the Kent Cricket website. Make it an even better evening by getting together with friends – discounts are available for groups of six or more, and for supporters aged 17 and under.
Kent Cricket’s popular annual Community Day will take place on Sunday 24 August at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, in partnership with the Kent Cricket Community Trust, as Kent Spitfires face Somerset in the Men’s Metro Bank One Day Cup.
Kent Cricket Community Trust (KCCT) aims to use cricket to make a positive impact in our community by engaging with individuals and social groups that can become, and often do feel, isolated. The thread that runs through all their priority projects include, empowerment, inclusion, wellbeing & cohesion.
On top of an exciting Metro Bank One Day Cup contest, a whole host of fun for all the family will be across the whole day in CT1, including FREE cricket activities, face painting and meet and greet with KCCT’s Captains: local actor and infamous Canterbury pantomime dame Ben Roddy, and CBeebies’ Mister Maker, Phil Gallagher.
Admission tickets are just £1 for juniors aged 4-13, and only £5 for 14-17 year-olds!

If asked to name a pioneering woman with links to the East Kent area, many local people would probably think of Amy Johnson.
While Amy’s untimely loss off the coast of Herne Bay in 1941 might have remained a macabre footnote in local history, it has instead provided a focal point for the celebration of her character and achievements.
In 2016 a bronze statue of Amy was unveiled on Herne Bay’s promenade, and the resulting wave of interest in Amy’s life was boosted by a popular exhibition at the town’s Seaside Museum.
Having moved from her birthplace in Hull to London in the 1920s, Amy initially took up flying as a hobby, but soon went on to win worldwide acclaim when she became the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia in 1930.
A far more precarious journey than in modern times, the 11,000-mile voyage took nineteen days to complete and featured a sandstorm over the Iraqi desert, an unexpected landing on a parade ground in India, and a monsoon in Burma.
Refusing to rest on her laurels, in the following years Amy made further pioneering flights to Moscow and Tokyo; followed by another recordbreaking solo trip from London to Cape Town in 1933. In the same decade Amy also developed successful business ventures in the worlds of commerce, journalism, and fashion.
With the arrival of World War II, Amy joined and flew for the Air Transport Auxiliary, an organisation tasked with ferrying planes around the country for the Royal Air Force. And it was one of these transit flights that ended with Amy ditching in the sea off Herne Bay.
A rescue attempt was made, but her body was never recovered.
While elements of mystery surround Amy’s final mission and the exact circumstances of her death, it is abundantly clear that Amy Johnson was a true pioneer: blazing a trail for women in aviation and inspiring others around the world with her record-breaking feats.
Of course, not all female pioneers undertake such swashbuckling adventures or achieve the levels of recognition enjoyed by Amy. In the legal services field, for example, generations of capable, determined, and resourceful women have progressively made inroads into what was once predominantly the preserve of men.
At Girlings, we are particularly proud of the strong role played by our female colleagues. Women currently make up 75% of our overall staff and 65% of our fee-earners, including significant representation across senior management positions. The Firm is also led by Lesley Rushton; the first female Managing Partner in Girlings’ 144-year history.
With our strong local roots and proximity to Amy Johnson’s final resting place, everyone at Girlings takes inspiration from Amy’s pioneering spirit and welcomes the opportunity to celebrate women who are pushing forward and striving for success in their own field.

Essential viewing 1
Canterbury Cathedral

Quirky character 2
‘The Crooked House’
Also known as Sir John Boy’s House, the skewed 17th century half-timbered, three-storey building on the King’s Mile is one of the most photographed buildings in Canterbury. It’s home to Catching Lives Books, a volunteer-run, second-hand and collectables bookshop.

Iconic shot 8
King’s Bridge
Take a photo from the bridge with the 16th century Old Weavers House to your left (or right if you’re in selfie mode) and you’ll have a great shot of the ducking stool, thought to be a late Victorian or Edwardian replica.
