18 November to 22 December 2023 This Christmas climb aboard our festive rail adventure and embark on a whistlestop tour of Canterbury’s medieval streets.

Firstly, pick up a free ticket from any of the participating businesses, then it’s full steam ahead…

Around Canterbury city centre there will be 38 festive Hornby Train displays hidden in Christmas windows of local businesses. Each time you spot a Hornby train, pop inside and the ‘station master’ will stamp your ticket!

Collect 5 stamps and head to your final destination, Fenwick Toy Department in St George’s Street, to collect your prize. While there, you can also enter the BIG prize draw to win your very own special Hornby Train set and Christmas bundle!

What’s On this Summer

Canterbury’s

Christmas Light Parade 2023 Friday 10 November will see crowds gather throughout the city to enjoy this year's Aladdin-themed Christmas Light Parade, brought to you by the businesses of Canterbury via Canterbury BID and sponsored by Miles & Barr.

The parade will make its way through the city centre, illuminating the Christmas lights as it goes past, celebrating the opening of the Christmas Market and launching Christmas 2023 in Canterbury.

New route revealed 10

This year's lantern parade will make its way up the high street before turning left into Guildhall Street, weaving through Sun Street, passing Canterbury Cathedral (Buttermarket), up through Longmarket, past Whitefriars and finish in the Dane John Gardens with speeches, a magic wish and a Christmas sing-a-long.

Bigger and better parade The parade will be led by the Lord Mayor and the amazing Bloco Fogo Drumming Band, followed by 6 huge Aladdin characters, 100+ light up costumes created by local schools, a festive brass band and a whole host of lively Christmas characters to entertain you on the route.

As the parade reaches its destination in the Dane John Gardens, we will make a Christmas wish with the Lord Mayor and the members of the Marlowe's panto cast, followed by a short Christmas sing-along with Robbie White.

Then it's time to head over to the Christmas Market for cup of hot cocoa, mulled wine or a delicious meal in one of our many fabulous restaurants.

Transport The Park and Ride will be extended to run until 8pm on Friday 10 November.

Due to the parade route, we recommend avoiding parking at Watling Street and Whitefriars multi-storey between 5-7pm.

If you wish to be close to the Dane John we would recommend Castle Street multi-storey or Castle Row as alternative options.

Meet Ben Roddy

Meet Ben Roddy:

Canterbury’s Dame Extraordinaire!

Ben Roddy is synonymous with pantomime in Canterbury.

He moved here from London after three seasons at The Marlowe and will celebrate his 1000th performance with the theatre during this season’s spectacular production of Aladdin.

MyCanterbury caught up with him for a chat about his passion for pantomime, scary stunts, audience appreciation and the legacy of Dave Lee

Congratulations on your nomination for Best Dame at this year’s Pantomime Awards for Sleeping Beauty 2022/3.

This year’s pantomime production will see your 1000th performance at The Marlowe – how does this feel?

It was a surreal experience. It was nice, I didn’t win but it was my third nomination and I did win it back in 2018. It’s a lovely celebration of the form. Ian McKellan was there, he did Mother Goose in the West End. It was lovely to see everyone – I’ve got hundreds of mates who do pantomime, but of course we never get to see each other!

I feel very honoured to play dame at The Marlowe. I don’t take it for granted and I’m always delighted to come back. My first pantomime in Canterbury was Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and in that run it was Dave Lee’s 1000th performance. I can’t quite believe I’m there, it feels like five minutes ago. And I’m only 23!

Tell us about this year’s pantomime.

What keeps you coming back to the role of the Pantomime Dame at The Marlowe?

Paul Hendy is the best writer – he’s always determined to give Canterbury something different. The Marlowe is really good at pantomime that’s rooted in tradition but also cutting-edge and forward-looking – creating some new traditions.

We’ve got Phil Gallagher back, he’s one of my best mates – so on a selfish level I’m delighted to be spending Christmas with him again, because I’m always very jealous when he goes off elsewhere. Kevin Clifton, is going to be a fantastic Abanazar. Courtney Bowman is award-winning, a great actor.

We’ve got Zain Abrahams, Lauren Chia, Alistair So, Shannon Farrell – not to mention The Black Diamonds and an amazing ensemble. It’s a big cast this year.

They keep asking me! It’s a privilege to work in such a beautiful theatre. And Canterbury audiences are the best in the world. Pantomime is the original immersive experience. The audience knows they’ve got a part to play. It’s about the shared experience, families looking at each other and laughing – it’s life-affirming.

For Snow White, I was suspended 30 metres above the audience. On my cue – flitter thrown in my face and a loud pyrotechnic – I had to fall backwards into the auditorium.

Dress caught in the ropes, deaf from the bang and blind without my glasses. It was pretty scary.

In Sleeping Beauty, a few years ago, we had a bath, sink and toilet prop with water that came out everywhere to get us drenched.

One day the heater tripped. You can imagine how cold it was, it was ICY. To make up for it, the heater was turned up full the next day – absolutely boiling.

Almost as bad.

That’s easy – a beach in Sounion in Greece, where we went as children.

It’s a beautiful bay overlooked by the temple of Poseidon. So I’m going to say go there, with my wife Kate and boys Stan and Rudy.

If you could have three wishes, what would they be?

My first wish would be to eat what I like and not get fat. My second would be to learn lines instantly, like a little chip that uploads a script. For my third, I’d wish for another 1000 shows at The Marlowe.

You worked with local legend Dave Lee, how was that?

He was brilliant, lovely – a mate. What I remember most is how generous Dave was.

He was fun to work with – hilarious. I’d watch him, to learn. We were all devastated when he died. I’m not filling his shoes – because no-one could do that – I’m following in his footsteps. I feel very proud to be carrying on his tradition. I still mention him when we do the bench routine every year. We move forward but also remember what’s gone, and I think that’s really important.

What would you say are the essential ingredients of a good pantomime dame?

There are loads of ways of doing it. Mine is: ‘he’s clearly a man.’ Drag is a wonderful art form that I respect immensely, but my dame is closer to clowning. Most important is your connection with the audience. They have to trust you. Make your own relief print seasonal card Create your own card, gift wrap or tag with this versatile relief print activity from Rock Paper Scissors.

This activity requires simple art materials and equipment.

Cut the bauble shapes out of the foam with either scissors or a craft knife.

Using the plastic cup again, draw big and small circles onto bubble wrap and cut them out.

Draw a big and small circle onto the foam, using either end of the plastic cup as your guides. Draw the top of the bauble in.

Take the foam off the card and leave the print to dry.

Once dry, roll white ink onto the bubble wrap circle and place on top of the red bauble. Do the same with the blue one. Carefully peel the bubble wrap off and sprinkle the print pattern with eco glitter while it’s still wet. Leave to dry.

At this stage, you can draw in the string on the bauble.

If you want, use letter blocks to create words.

Place Perspex® or a piece of glass (something non-porous and flat) onto newspaper.

Squeeze some ink onto the Perspex® and roll it out so it’s evenly spread on the roller.

Then roller your first colour onto the foam bauble. Repeat with a different colour on the smaller bauble. Place both down onto your card and roll the back, either with a clean roller or a rolling pin.

This process can be used to make your own gift wrap and tags for events and celebrations through the year.

Red, green and brown paper or card Scissors Pencil Glue stick Hole punch

Step 1 Cut out the templates.

Step 2 Draw around the templates onto red and green card with a pencil. Cut these shapes out.

Step 3 Put a little glue in the middle of the green leaf shape and layer the larger red petals and the smaller red petals on top of them.

Why not make a felt fabric version with the same templates?

We embroidered some French knots in the middle or ours, but you could glue on dots of felt fabric, add beads or even sequins for some festive sparkle. Sew or glue a brooch pin on the back and use it to brighten up a coat or scarf.

Step 4 Use a hole punch to make some tiny circles from brown paper.

Canterbury’s Christmas Window Competition From paperchains to Denim Santa – Canterbury’s Christmas windows have it all! And each year our lucky judges get to spend an afternoon visiting the city and picking some favourites.

Canterbury Pottery – Winner – Independent Category Purveyors of unique handmade pottery by the Cathedral gate the traditional pottery snowmen were still there, but also so much pink! What we judges loved was that it managed to be striking, lively and modern, but still with so many traditional elements.

Sowley - Winner – Independent Category A wonderful gift shop and picture framers – created floating umbrellas of decorated trees, with all the presents sitting underneath them floating atop a sleeping town of pottery houses.

Store50 – Winner – Charity Category Denim Santa, dressed up in pre-loved duds, rifling through the postbox of recycled paper letters he’s received from well-behaved children. So creative, so impressive, and managing to be festive whilst still staying try to their key ethos and message.

Fenwick – Winner – National Category Their signature green was carried through each window, showing off a different department, and there were so many clever little details to take in the closer you get to them.

Violet Elizabeth – Special Mention We loved Violet Elizabeth’s vibrant decorations highlighting their handmade, ethical clothes, gifts and homewares. Those fantastic paper chains (why don’t we make paper chains as much anymore?)

– were handmade, and the owners have a new baby!

Girlings Solicitors and the Spirit of Invicta Alongside an awareness of our own Kentish heritage, which stretches back to 1881, at Girlings Solicitors we also marvel at the many layers that make up Canterbury’s rich history.

While the Cathedral and Thomas Becket have long been the focal point of Canterbury’s historical tapestry, there is also a lesser-known nineteenth-century story of Robert Stephenson’s Invicta.

Invicta was an early steam locomotive that was built by Stephenson’s company immediately after his pioneering Rocket.

Representing as it did a significant advance in locomotive design, the Rocket became the template for most other steam engines for the next 150 years – not least Invicta.

Once completed in 1830, Invicta was shipped from Newcastle to Whitstable to begin work on the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway. Named after the County’s motto, meaning undefeated, Invicta operated on the Crab and Winkle Line, which today survives as a popular walking and cycling route linking Canterbury and the coast.

Although Invicta was retired only six years later, in 1836, having struggled to meet the rigours of the incline out

of Whitstable, it is rightly celebrated as an important milestone in railway history. Indeed, in the years after it was decommissioned, Invicta was displayed prominently in Dane John Gardens and by the Riding Gate Roundabout, a testament to its innovative role in Canterbury’s past.

In that bold attempt to connect Canterbury and Whitstable for the benefit of trade and tourism, we at Girlings Solicitors see parallels in the networks and legal links our Firm has forged in East Kent.

Parking Here are a few insider tips to help you find cheaper parking spots: If you plan to visit Canterbury through its original medieval gateway in the St Dunstan’s area, park at Station Road West for £1.80 per hour and walk through the Westgate Towers like visitors have done for centuries.

For those wishing to start their visit with a trip to the Creative Quarter, or The King’s Mile, you will find parking at £1.80 per hour at Northgate Car Park and a lovely walk past some of our finest independent retailers.
