March 2018 Metropolitan Washington Association of Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors
Newsleak Message from the President — Al Luke Friends,
misery, I can relax knowing that each morning other team members are opening the business, answering the phone, and serving customers. Lying here dreaming of 11.8 second, four tire and fuel pit stops, I thought it would be a good time to review elements of teamwork in our companies.
As I contemplate a message for March, it's the best of times and the worst of times. For the best, I'm taking most of the month of March off to go out West for the NASCAR Western swing and catch some races with my father. For the worst, I've been out of work 12 days with the flu and bronchitis. They For every Dale Earnhart Jr. or Kyle gave me the wrong medicine. What Busch, there is a whole team of a drag. people--- be they telephone answerers or bill payers or loading How in the world do these random dock guys or owners and officers events play into a message to us in the front office making it all Plumbing and HVAC Contractors and happen. We are all part of a suppliers? That's easy... In all that team. As a driver does not win a we do--- at work, at home, the sports race without help from the ownerwe watch--- we are all tied to others, ship group, sponsors, the crew and the success of our ventures chief, spotters, and pit crew, we ultimately relies on TEAM - can not serve our customers alone WORK. While I recover at home in but only through a larger team. Consider: Am I focused on me, or am I focused on the team? Monthly Meeting I'm going with TEAM. March 1, 2018
4:30 - Board Meeting
6:00 - T-4 Training
7:30 - Dinner and General Meeting
Teamwork means first, knowing your place on the team, KNOWING
and DOING YOUR JOB. By being proficient in your job, you can gain the professional credibility to allow you to advise other, maybe newer or less skilled teamers. This can help in many ways, from improving interpersonal or departmental interfaces to building bridges to others that allow them and the organization to flourish. Next, RESOURCE YOUR PEOPLE and PROCESSES. Don't expect to make a silk purse from a sow's ear. If your guy scraped the floor taking the water heater out, who really deserves thanks if he wasn't provided with a hand truck? It is an adage for a reason that in business, companies owe employees (the team) the tools to get the job done. Another important aspect in team relations is GOOD LISTENING. I often ask my employees--- "do you have everything that you need to do the job? Or, is there any way we can help you do your job
better?" Often we have our own opinions about things and overlook taking the time to ask those most affected how they feel. Communication is key: both clearly communicating expectations of the team member, and listening to their feedback on how they are accomplishing (or missing) their goals. As best you are able, approach these encounters with love and empathy, and remember that there was a time that we all were the new guy, and "in need of training." Back to the water heater floor scraper: Did you possibly harsh him out last time he asked for help? Treating your team members with love and respect pays dividends, be sure. If you want your teamers to treat your organizational customers with respect, you must provide the example in your dealings with them. And remember, folks often readily forget what is said to them, but they long remember how you made them feel. Focus on the team and you can't go wrong! See you in April!

How to Put an End to Complaining By: Dan Rockwell, from Leadership Freak, February 12, 2018
I made it to 7 a.m. before complaining. This morning I decided that I wouldn’t complain all day. After some thought, I lowered my expectation to the morning. But the first thing I did was complain at a 7 A.M. meeting. If I’m not careful, I’ll start complaining about my 7 a.m. complaining. What is complaining: 1. Complaining is noticing problems WITHOUT exploring solutions. 2. Complaining is whining about something you can’t change. 3. Complaining is insecurity’s first response to poor performance. 4. Complaining is focusing on bad and ignoring good. Complaining is attempting to elevate status. Humble-braggers complain about being too busy. After all, only losers have free time.
Page
3 reasons leaders complain: 1. To excuse poor performance. Results disappointed so you need something or someone to blame. 2. Sympathy-seeking. You want others to feel sorry for you. Call this Woe Is Me complaining. 3. Dissatisfaction. Reaching forward sinks into unhappiness with the past.
is change it. If you can’t change it, change the way you think about it. Don’t complain.”
Not complaining: Noticing isn’t complaining. “I notice you were late for work everyday this week,” isn’t complaining.
#2. Confront problems before they become nagging complaints. Delay lets problems grow into worrisome beasts.
Pointing out things that are broken, not working, or harmful in pursuit of improvement isn’t complaining.
#3. Turn temptation into positive behavior. Just think how positive you’d be if you turned every temptation to complain into solution-seeking and gratitude.
Leadership includes problem solving. But if you leave out the word “solving”, you’re a whining complainer. Maya Angelou says, “What you’re supposed to do when you don’t like a thing
3 ways to stop complaining today: #1. Make a commitment to not complain about a single thing for one day. If that seems aggressive, stop complaining in the morning. Recommit when you falter.

Everyone Uses 100% of Their Time: The 5 E’s to Maximize Productivity While Maintaining Balance By: Damian Mason An entrepreneur friend of mine relayed something he’d heard at a business roundtable: “You use 100% of your time.” Simple as that sounds, it’s pretty provocative. Because the logical follow up is, “doing what?” Building the life and business of their choosing? Or filling their calendar with unproductive, yet self - imposed, commitments? Making themselves better? Or numbing themselves with mindless passivity? 525,600 minutes in a year Except for leap year, when you get an additional 1,440 minutes, this number doesn’t change. How you commit those minutes correlates directly to your success and happiness. Time is Money Median income per person in the U.S. (half earned more, half earned less) is approximately $59,000. That’s $29.50 per hour on a 2,000 hour work year, or just about 50 cents per minute.
Page 11
What are your minutes worth? Run the math. Now look at your daily routine. If your time was actual cash, would you spend it the way you’re spending your time?
Down Time vs. Wasting Time You’re saying, “Damian, you can’t work every minute of your life. A person needs down time!” Agreed. But there’s a difference between down time and wasting time. For example: In 2016, the average American adult watched 5 hours and 4 minutes of TV per day. Using the median hourly rate, would you pay $150 every day to watch television?
The 5 E’s To maximize productivity while maintaining a balanced life, I apportion time into the 5 E’s.
•
ENTERPRISE: This is your career or business. Even if you love it, it’s still
work. Don’t let it consume every waking moment!
•
EXERCISE: Movement of body sharpens the mind and feeds the soul.
•
ENRICHMENT & EDUCATION: You know that feeling you get when you learn something new, master a skill, help with a cause, or read an enlightening book? Make time to make yourself better.
•
ENJOYMENT: Success without joy is like a convertible in Siberia — what’s the point? Family, hobbies, and stimulating conversation over dinner and drinks with friends is time well spent.
Activity that doesn’t fit into one of these categories is eliminated. Likewise, too much time spent on one “E” is cause for a rebalance. I encourage you to implement the 5 E’s for prosperity, happiness, and fulfillment. You’ve got time!
