General Information

The University of Charleston was founded by the Southern Methodist denomination in 1888 as Barboursville Seminary in Barboursville, West Virginia, and became a college in 1889. In 1901, it was renamed Morris Harvey College in honor of a prominent donor. During the Great Depression, the college moved to Charleston to take advantage of the larger metropolitan area. As a result of the merger between the Methodist church North and South, the college disaffiliated from the denomination and Morris Harvey College became independent in 1942. From 1935 to 1947, the college was located in downtown Charleston, holding classes in several separate buildings. During these years, the college grew steadily, in part because of a merger with Kanawha Junior College and an affiliation with the Mason College of Fine Arts and Music. Recognizing the need for a unified campus, in 1947 construction of the present facilities began on the south bank of the Kanawha River. The Board of Trustees changed the name from Morris Harvey College to the University of Charleston on December 13, 1978. Today, the University still benefits from its location in the dynamic capital city and from the beauty of West Virginia's hills. Proximity to the seat of government, to the state's largest medical, commercial, and financial centers and to major research and manufacturing facilities provides excellent opportunities for experiential learning. The University serves the community as a focal point for numerous intellectual, scientific, cultural, athletic and civic events. These interactions between the University and the community are vital to the achievement of the University's mission.

The University of Charleston offers traditional fall and spring semesters and two summer sessions. Programs Baccalaureate programs are available in 15 academic fields, an Associate degree program is offered in Nursing, Master’s degree programs are available in Business Administration and Forensic Accounting, and a Doctoral degree program is available in Pharmacy. Student Life Approximately 40 clubs and organizations are active on campus to engage you in Student Life. Beyond the campus, many students become active participants in the daily life of the Charleston community by taking advantage of an impressive array of work and entertainment options. Also, white water rafting, skiing, mountain climbing, and mountain biking are available within a one-hour drive from the campus.

The mission of the University of Charleston is to educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living, and community involvement.

Productive Work The University prepares students to contribute to society immediately and throughout their lives. Their work will vary tremendously, but the University hopes that each graduate will improve his or her world. "Productive" work isn't defined by the acquisition of great material gain for the graduate, but by the positive impact of the work on the graduate's community and world. Enlightened Living The University believes that college graduates must own a broad range of knowledge to thrive in modern society. Graduates should be scientifically, economically, politically, aesthetically, and culturally literate. They should have a sense of history and shared values, and a commitment to moral purpose and personal character Community Involvement

2

Finally, the University attempts to develop within the student a pattern of community involvement. The foundation of our democratic society rests on community involvement, so the University wants graduates to take leadership responsibility and initiative in shaping organizations, institutions, and communities.

The Golden Eagle’s come into the 2010 season with a very successful 2009 campaign. UC finished the 2009 season with a 19-4-0 record overall, and going undefeated with a 10-0-0 WVIAC record. This was coach Duernberger’s second season coaching, and his best so far. The season began with a 7-1 home game win against Bluefield College where Dion Peters found the back of the net four times and the player of the week award. Days later, a home match that was lost against Cal PA. This was freshman's Adam Hintz and Robert Vincent’s first game for the Golden Eagles. On September 2nd, the team opened their first away game with a 4-1 win over defending WVIAC champion Alderson-Broaddus. Days later the Eagles found themselves soaring over Lake Erie with a 2-1 win, making them a powerhouse on the road. The Eagle’s went two more game before losing to #15 Slippery Rock making their overall record 5-2-0. They went on to win seven straight games with Freshman Sean Teepen winning the player of the week award during the 21st and 27th of September. Five of the seven games were conference making their conference record 7-0-0. Soon after the University found themselves traveling to Huntington to play Division I school Marshall University. They came out strong, but it wasn’t enough to beat the thundering herd. UC once again, shook the loss off quickly and came back to win another seven straight games. Three of which were the final conference matches and conference tournament wins. This made the team WVIAC champions in regular season, as well as tournament champions. That wasn’t enough for the boys, as they went on to battle in the NCAA tournament. Their first match was against #4 Millersville with a 2-0 win. This moved the team up to the sweet 16 where they played #12 Slippery Rock. It was survival of the fittest for this match, and the boys battled their hearts out to win the match 3-2. On November 20th, their season was finally brought to an end, with an upsetting loss against #20 Lewis University. The Eagles went up 1-0 early in the match, but it didn’t save them as Lewis put four goals past them to make it a 4-1 overall score. This placed the Eagles at #7 in the nation, making this Duernberger’s best season of coaching at the University of Charleston. The defensive line consisted mainly of two Cincinnati boys from Ohio (Craig Cantor and Kyle McCarty), along with two Canucks from Canada (Adam Hintz and Justin Emerson). These four along with Sean Teepen in goal held the defensive line, keeping the Golden Eagles with a shut out record of 13 games in the season. Other noted defenders are Mladen Petrovic and Kyle Rodriguez. Other noted goalies are Robert Spain, and Nikolas Adair. In the midfield the team had Robert Vincent, and Predrag Ivanovic in the center of the pitch. On the wings were Bryce Larsen, and Lamar Cancino. Other noted midfielders are Drew DeAngelo, Michael Osuji, and Tyler Demitroff. The midfield was vital to the success of the 2009 season. A combination of goals and assists from the midfield lead the Eagles to a successful 2009 season. Up front the line consisted of Dion Peters and Darko Karamatic. Other noted forwards are Gabe Haynes, Jordan Rose, and Jordan McCollam. With Peters’ speed and Karamtic’s strength, the opposing defenders did not stand a chance when these two forwards came together.

Chad Duernberger, the 2009 WVIAC, Atlantic Regional, NSCAA/Mondo National Coach of the Year, has led the University of Charleston soccer program to prestigious heights in just two years of work. After becoming the head coach in January of 2008, Coach Duernberger was considered one of the youngest head college coaches in America at the age of 24. In just two seasons, Charleston is back to being considered amongst the elite NCAA Division II programs in the country. After taking over a program that finished 0-17-0 (0-10-0 WVIAC) in 2007, Duernberger improved the youthful Golden Eagles to a 4-11-2 (3-5-2 WVIAC) record in 2008. The 2009 season proved to be the second best Head Coach in school history as Charleston finished with a 19-4-0 record which Chad Duernberger included a perfect season in WVIAC conference play of 10-0-0. The team accolades began to come in as the Golden Eagles won both the WVIAC regular season and tournament titles. By finishing third in the Atlantic Region, Charleston made its first appearance in the DII NCAA National Tournament since 1999. Under Duernberger’s direction, UC took advantage of its opportunity by advancing to the Elite 8. The Golden Eagles broke into the NSCAA DII Top 25 on September 29th and stayed in the ranks throughout the rest of the season. Duernberger led the program to a #7 finish in the NSCAA DII Top 25 Final Rankings. Defensive tenacity, offensive creativity and high paced soccer have been the style of play for Duernberger’s teams thus far. The Golden Eagles finished the 2009 season ranked 11th in the nation in scoring (61 total goals; 2.65 goals per game) along with a shutout percentage tabbed as number 8 in the country (13 shutouts). The Golden Eagles also performed well in the classroom including 13 men’s soccer players with a 3.0 – 4.0 grade point average. Within Coach Duernberger’s two years of recruiting and guidance, the Golden Eagles have seen 3 NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-Americans, 5 NSCAA Atlantic All-Region performers, and 7 First-Team All-WVIAC honorees. Charleston has also taken home the WVIAC Player of the Year (Dion Peters, 2009) and Freshman of the Year (Rob Vincent, 2009) awards. Prior to UC, Duernberger served on the men’s soccer staff at Marshall University (C-USA) as an office graduate assistant during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. As a player, the Belle, WV native was a four year starter at the University of Charleston from 2002-2006. Duernberger was an All-WVIAC performer which included three years on the First Team All-WVIAC and one year on the Second Team All-WVIAC. The former striker also earned All-Region honors in 2002. While splitting time at Riverside and South Charleston High Schools, the three time First-Team All State honoree was awarded the West Virginia Forward of the Year in 2001. Duernberger currently resides in Charleston, WV.

The Golden Eagles followed up their magical 2009 season with an almost equally impressive season. Finishing the campaign with a solid 16-4-1 record, UC’s season ended in the sweet 16 with an overtime loss to conference rival West Virginia Wesleyan, who UC matched up against 3 times in 2010. UC started the season on fire with a 4-1 away win at Shippensburg, which was followed two days later with a 1-1 draw against regional rival, and nationally ranked Slippery Rock University. UC went on to win their next 3 games convincingly, before dropping their first match at home to West Virginia Wesleyan. UC once again went on a 3 match win streak, before dropping their second game of the season, an overtime decision to nationally ranked Ohio Dominican University. UC responded with wins against UPJ and Lock Haven, before California (PA) stunned the Golden Eagles for a 2nd consecutive year with a 2-1 decision. This was to be just the boost that Duernberger’s men needed. 3rd in the conference, and outside of the top 6 in the regional rankings, UC had their work cut out, and responded with a 7 match win streak, winning the conference regular season title and conference tournament on the way. Their season ended in Erie, Pennsylvania though, at the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament. The weekend started off well, as UC completed a Shippensburg double on the season, courtesy of a Rob Vincent overtime free kick to send the golden eagles flying into the sweet 16 with a 1-0 victory. However, they were handed their 4th and final defeat of the season by West Virginia Wesleyan in another overtime thriller which ended 2-1 in favor of the Bobcats. Goalkeepers Sophomore Sean Teepen returned in net for the Golden Eagles after an excellent performance in 2009. The First Team All-WVIAC and Second Team All-Atlantic Region honoree finished 16th in the country with a Goals Against Average of .758 and 12th in Save Percentage at .854. Incoming Freshman Koty Chandler (Chillicothe, OH) was added to the goalkeeping core for 2010. At 6-foot-4 180 pounds, Chandler gave plenty of size to the Golden Eagles. “We are very pleased with Sean’s ability, attitude, and work-ethic,” Coach Duernberger stated. “Koty gives us depth at the position and we are glad to have both of these players in net for us.” Defenders Charleston returned all four starters from a year ago, which proved to be one of the best back lines in the country. The Golden Eagles finished 8th in the nation last season in shutout percentage. “We knew we had the ability to score goals in 2009, but it was a matter of not conceding goals which was the concern. I believe this hit home with our backline and they took pride in limiting our opponent’s opportunities. You could sense an excitement in our backs whenever we earned a shutout in a match,” Duernberger said. The back four consisted of junior’s Justin Emerson, Craig Cantor, and Kyle McCarty along with Sophomore Adam Hintz. The Golden Eagles also welcomed England international Dan Walmsley after redshirting in 2009. The center back added depth to an already strong defense. As for newcomers, Charleston added James Hall, Dylan Bogdan, Zach Higginbotham, Tony Serge, and Ceth Locklear to the defense in 2010.

Coaching Staff

Midfielders The graduation of Lamar Cancino and the loss of Predrag Ivanovic and Drew DeAngelo to transfers left the Golden Eagles needing to fill holes within the midfield in order to be as successful as last season. “We lost three players who contributed to our success in 2009. Lamar gave us experience as a right midfielder and Drew had strong pace as a left-sided player,” Duernberger stated. “Obviously replacing a Second-Team All American in Petza (Predrag) will be tough to do, but we are very happy with who we brought in to strengthen our midfield.” Looking to replace those areas as strong candidates for starting roles were English central midfielder Ryan Osborne, Coastal Carolina University transfer Eddie Mangan, and Junior College transfer Marshall Ngobidi. Osborne sat out the 2009 season as a redshirt while Mangan and Ngobidi looked to finish out their careers with Charleston. Although UC looked to replace key players within the midfield, the Golden Eagles brought back 2009 NSCAA Second-Team All-American and WVIAC Freshman of the Year Rob Vincent. “Rob is a talented player, but what separates him from other talented guys is his work rate and his desire to not be satisfied with where he is as a soccer player. He continues to want to get better and push the guys around him everyday,” Duernberger stated. Charleston also looked to Chase Robertson, Michael Osuji, Adam Gourchane and Bijan Dastgheib to contribute in the midfield. Forwards UC proudly returned the 2009 WVIAC Player of the Year and NSCAA Third-Team All American Dion Peters for scoring duties up front. Peters finished with 18 goals and 5 assists in 2009 including Charleston’s lone goal in the Elite 8. The Golden Eagles looked to replace NSCAA All-Atlantic Region player Darko Karamatic due to transferring to Division I Jacksonville University. Looking to pair up with Peters was Harry Machacha of Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas. Machacha helped guide Tyler to the 2009 Junior College National Championship and a perfect 21-0 season. The Golden Eagles also returned Jordan McCollam who contributed 2 goals and an assist last season. Charleston also welcomed Connecticut native Bryan Gaska to help continue UC’s scoring ways. Last season, Charleston brought exciting soccer to the Capitol City by finishing 11th in the country in Team Scoring (2.65 goals per game), which they will try to replicate in 2010.

Triana Field, formerly called Blackwell Field before the $1.5million injection, is home to UC Men's and Women's Soccer, has a natural grass surface and dimensions of 110x70 yards. It can seat 500 spectators .The newly renovated and renamed multipurpose field lies a short walk from UC's main campus. The Golden Eagles have played their opening few home matches on Triana for the 2009 and 2010 seasons before moving to Schoenbaum Stadium. On September 8th 2010, the Golden Eagles set a record attendance of 511 for the match vs. Urbana (pictured below). The Golden Eagles went on to win 5-1. Coach says: It was an electric atmosphere to have such support. Triana allows for the students to be right on the sidelines, which makes it a tough place to play for any team coming to Charleston.

From the North: Travel I-77 South or 1-79 South into Charleston. Follow the signs to I-64 West. Take Oakwood Road Exit 58A and follow the signs to Route 61 South (MacCorkle Ave.). From the South: Travel I-77 North (West Virginia Turnpike). Go through downtown Charleston (ignore the UC sign at MacCorkle Ave.), to 1-64 West. Take Oakwood Road Exit 58A and follow the signs toward Route 61 South-Marmet. From the East: Travel I-64 West or I-79 South. Schoenbaum Stadium is the second home to the UC Golden Eagles. Located about 15 minutes from campus in Coonskin Park, it is an artificially turfed stadium. The 2,000 seated stadium is the home to many local teams in the Charleston area. The stadium has been used by UC for the majority of both the 2009 and 2010 seasons, due to Triana Field being over used. The artificial turf surface gives the Golden Eagles a chance to show off their soccer ability, on a true and predictable surface. Coach Chad says: “Schoenbaum is one of the best soccer venues for any college (NCAA DI, DII, & DIII) team in the country. It is great to have a place to play where the field isn't an issue when championships are on the line late in October with West Virginia weather. We have been fortunate to play two WVIAC conference finals there.” Schoenbaum played host to the WVIAC Post-Season play offs in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons. The Golden Eagles often practice here during the regular season.

DIRECTIONS TO SCHOENBAUM STADIUM Take I-77/I-64 to the Greenbrier Street exit (Exit 99) in Charleston. Turn onto Greenbrier Street and proceed over the hill heading away from the city and the Capitol building (North Rt. 114). At the fork in the road at the bottom of the hill, bear to the right, towards Coonskin Park (the other road toward the left takes you to the airport). Turn left at the first stoplight (Go-mart is at this intersection) onto Coonskin Drive. Continue on Coonskin Drive into the Coonskin Park. Be careful, the speed limit is 25 miles an hour. Continue on Coonskin Drive through the park and the road will take a sharp right at the pond. The soccer stadium is on the right at the amphitheater across the road from the golf course/pool. There is ample parking either the field or at the pool.

Koty joins UC as the 2nd goalkeeper on the roster behind sophomore Sean Teepen. Quite an achievement considering he grew up thinking “soccer was stupid” and only began to play at the age of 14 as a way to stay in shape for his real passion, basketball. He used to join in soccer practice at his middle school during the fall months, in preparation for winter basketball, and started out as a midfielder. After a few months though, he moved back into goalkeeper, and that is where he has played ever since. Consequently, soccer has surpassed basketball as his favorite sport. Koty‟s first pair of soccer boots were Puma Kings. Koty started taking soccer seriously during his time at Chillicothe High School and was a 3 year varsity letterman, 4 time sectional champ, and achieved All-Southeast District honors in his senior year. Koty also played soccer for Metro FC during his time at high school, and it is in this time frame where he met probably the most two influential figures in his soccer career so far; Zach Breth, assistant coach of Chillicothe High School, and Nick Tarkany, goalkeeping coach from Metro FC. Koty labels these two coaches as the individuals who made him into the player he is. Koty says his favorite aspect of the game of soccer is the creativity, and hates losing. His proudest moment so far is playing for UC, and his least favorite moment is making a mistake in a high school fixture which cost his team the game. Koty got to UC by impressing Coach Duernberger on a recruiting trip during the spring of 2010, and his goal during the 4 years is to become the best player he can possibly be. Koty is majoring in Political Science.

Son of Rick and Jenny Teepen, Sean returns to UC for his 2nd year as a goalkeeper for the golden eagles. Sean started out playing soccer at around the age of 3, when older brothers Keith and Craig would play in the backyard and use Sean as the goalkeeper. Sean remembers running in the house crying when his brothers would kick the ball too hard, but nowadays, Sean would relish the task. From there, Sean went on to play for the Westside Instructionals, Cincinnati West Soccer Club and Cincinnati United Premier, he has played goalkeeper for each of these teams. At Oak Hills High School, Sean was a 3 year varsity starter and 2 year captain. In his junior year he made 2nd team All-Conference and in his senior year he made 1st team AllConference and 1st team All-Southwest Ohio. He was named MVP twice during his high school career. He was spotted by Coach Duernberger playing in a tournament for his high school, and his career as a golden eagle went from there. Sean credits a lot of his success to Matt Ruehl and Chris Wanamaker who coached him as a youngster. Seanâ€&#x;s favorite thing about soccer is playing at the next level, and testing himself against better opponents, and he hates losing. His best moment so far at UC was winning the Atlantic Region title in the Sweet 16 match up against Slippery Rock in 2009. His worst moment was losing to Ohio Dominican University in overtime during the 2010 season. Selected to the 2009 WVIAC First Team and the NSCAA All-Atlantic Region Second Team. Started22 of 23 games including every match in postseason play. Recorded 13 shutouts which ranked 8th in the country for shutout percentage. Finished

James Joins the Golden Eagle squad in 2010 from Ontario, Canada. He began soccer at the age of four and with the influence of his father (Gord), mother (Rose), and little brother (Ian), James has successfully made it onto the Golden Eagles Roster. He graduated from Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School and found his way through his fellow defenders Adam and Justin to join the University of Charleston. James‟ experience with Erin Mills, North Mississauga, Clarkson, and BFA clubs have influenced James along the way. His major influence according to him are “All the people I‟ve met along the way”. James began on the attacking side of the field, then slowly found his way to a more defensive position throughout his career. James has been recruited to the Golden Eagles as a Left or Right Defensive Back. He joined his fellow Canucks Adam and Justin who have made their way from the same club team. James and Adam have traveled to Italy together with Bryst FA and competed against some challenging opponents throughout the OSL Under 21 League. The people who have influenced James the most are his former coaches Paul Nelson and Vasco Nunes. “I love the atmosphere of soccer” says James, “If there‟s one thing to hate about soccer, it‟s all the diving and fake injuries”.

Dylan joins the 2010 Golden Eagles from South Allegheny High School as a versatile, left footed player who plays anywhere down the left side of the field. Son of Bonnie and Mike, he says his major influence is his older brother Derek who played college soccer at Bethany College. Dylan began playing soccer at the age of 4, and his first pair of cleats were Adidas Copa Mundial, and his first jersey was Manchester United. He has played school soccer throughout his career, and has always excelled. Most notably as a youngster, Dylan was the leading scorer in his hometown. He played for his middle school, but it was at high school when Dylanâ€&#x;s ability started to show through as he was selected as a three year All-WPIAL, two year All-Conference and he was named player of the year on one occasion. He was also selected onto the ODP team for Pennsylvania-West. During his time at high school, he also played cup soccer for Beadling Soccer Club, where he was coached by Steve Evans, someone who Dylan says helped him a lot. Dylan says although he loves soccer, he dislikes the conditioning side, especially during pre-season. His career highlight is scoring the winning PK in a regional qualifier. His worst moment so far is losing the championship game that same year. He was recruited by Chad Duernberger after a successful recruit trip, which came at the same time as teammate Koty Chandler. Dylan will use the first year as a bedding in period, before hopefully pushing for a regular starting spot in his sophomore year. Dylan will be majoring in Athletic training, leading into

Zach is one of the local boys on the roster hailing from Vienna, WV and is affectionately nicknamed ZACH by his teammates. Son of Patty and Jeff, and older brother to Lauren (16) and Lynsee (12) Zach started soccer at the tender age of 5. His fondest and earliest memories as a child were playing soccer with his friends during recess in elementary school. His first pair of boots were Adidas Predators and his first soccer jersey was a Real Madrid: Ronaldo shirt. He was influenced by his friends and elementary gym teacher, and this led to him playing for his first team, RVSC Thunder. Since then, Zach has played for RVSC Rapids and ‟92 WV ODP and finally for Parkersburg High School. He has played as an outside midfielder and as an outside back during his career, and is used as somewhat of a utility player for UC. During his time in high school, he notched up 3 state championships (much to the displeasure of teammate Tony). On a personal level, he was twice named 1st team All-State, once named 1st team All-Conference and was a finalist for the Gatorade player of the year. He attributes a lot of his success to Don Fosselman, his high school coach, and club coaches Patrick Holguin and Steve Rose. His best moment so far was winning the state championship; however being knocked out of the playoffs during his sophomore year ranks as his lowest point. Zach loves that “the game is 11 players working as a single unit. There are many different ways to beat a team.” He also states that he could not have come this far without the support of his teammates over the years. Zach will be majoring in Pre-Med/Biology

Tony is one of only 3 West Virginians on the roster, hailing from Beckley, WV. Son of Susan and Marco, he started the game at the age of 4 and has been heavily influenced by his dad. During his career he has played for the Badgers, West Virginia Rapids and West Virginia Rowdies. He too, like many other players on the roster has played right across the field, but it is as a striker where he found his niche as a youngster, averaging 3 goals a game during his early years. As he got older, he gradually retreated back down the field, through midfield and back to defense where he played most of his high school career. During his time at Woodrow Wilson High School, he was named defender of the year in West Virginia and named 1st team AllState, on both the coaches‟ poll and associated press of WV poll. Throughout his career, he has been subject to the help of coaches, and puts down a lot of his success to Rocky Powell, Steve Laraba and Jason Logan. He was made aware of UC by his friends back home and after a successful recruit trip was offered a place by Coach Duernberger. Tony‟s two major goals during his time at Charleston are to maintain a 3.5 GPA and establish a starting 11 spot. Tony says he “loves everything and hates nothing about soccer”, and his most memorable moment is being named WV defender of the year. His lowest point was losing the state championship twice during his high school career. Tony is currently undecided on a major.

Dan enters his first eligible year as a sophomore having redshirted his freshman year due to eligibility problems. Son of Karen and Ian Walmsley and brother to Nathan, Dan got into soccer at the age of 6, and as a Manchester United fan, used to love watching David Beckham, Eric Cantona and Jaap Stam. His first pair of boots were Puma and his first team was Longridge Town. He has gone on to represent Lancashire County, Longridge Town High School and Cardinal Newman College. He has played as a goalkeeper, center back, center midfielder and center forward, and always thought of himself as the best player in every position growing up. In his last two years at Longridge High School he was named sportsman of the year. He got to UC by signing up with Sporting Chance USA, an agency that links players with colleges in America. This got him in contact with Chad and the recruiting process was underway. Despite not being able to play his freshman year, Dan often travelled with the team, and now that he is eligible, his goal is to become a key player at UC. He has been influenced in his career by Stuart Darley, and current coach Chad Duernberger, and his favorite (and least favorite thing) about soccer is that the best team doesnâ€&#x;t always win. His lowest point in his career so far is losing in the national semi-final with Cardinal Newman, but winning the Conference in 2010 with UC is his highest point. Dan is majoring in sports administration.

His position is Center Back or wherever the team needs him. He graduated from Huron Heights Secondary School and played the last 3 of his 4 years as a center midfielder, earning MVP in his last two years. He has traveled around the world with his former Academy team Bryst to compete against some of the best and to grasp a better concept of the sport. His biggest accomplishment was travelling to England for a trial with Burnley FC. Some of the major influences in his life are his former coaches: Steve Payne, Gary Miller, and Mike Curci. Craig begins his junior year at UC as a starter at right back, although he spent much of his youth playing pretty much anywhere and everywhere on the field. Son of Jude and Steve, and brother to Molly and Julie, Craig began playing soccer at the age of 5 and fondly remembers his first pair of blue Diadora soccer boots. Craig joined SCSA United as a Goalkeeper, and continued as a keeper until he reached his senior year at Turpin High School. As a goalkeeper, he achieved 2nd team all-conference honors with 8 shutouts. In his senior year, he played as striker recording 10 goals and 11 assists which led him to being named player of the year, 1st team all-conference, and 1st team all-city and led to an appearance in the Senior All-Star game. Craig also played club soccer while in high school for Cincinnati United Premier. Interestingly, Craig is still considered by Coach Duernberger as the 3rd choice goalkeeper at UC, should anything happen to Sean or Koty. Craig says he dislikes players who donâ€&#x;t give 100% effort and his best soccer memory came when Turpin beat Anderson 2-1 during his senior year and he managed to get on the score sheet. Craig joined UC when he heard that Coach Chad Duernberger was taking over a 0-17 program, which needed players. In his freshman year he recorded 3 goals and 4 assists from central midfield, and in his sophomore year he scored 1 goal from right back. Craig has earned a reputation amongst his teammates as the long thrower, and is often called to launch throw-ins into the penalty area to create an attacking opportunity. 2008 (Freshman): Played in 16 matches including 14

Justin started playing soccer at age 6 where he played house league for a year. He then went on to a rep team, where he continued for the next several years. He played on a team called Pickering Power for 4 years, then moved to the Ajax Destroyers, where he played for three years. During this time period he played for Bryst Academy. At age 15 he joined Bryst full time, and played for his high school as the captain for four years. At age 13 he travelled to England to play against some English youth teams. At age 14, he travelled to Germany and Austria to play against youth teams. At age 15 he travelled to Nunavut to play soccer and learn about the culture, and at age 16 I travelled to Hawaii to play some youth teams. Son of Anna Edwards and Mark Emerson, and older brother to Eric and Drew Emerson. The first pair of boots that he can remember are the classic predators. At an early age, Justin realized that he was a natural defender and he has played there ever since. Throughout high school he received several awards including MVP soccer player of the year, Best Sportsmanship, Excellence in Athletics. He heard about UC from one of his teammates at Bryst Academy who had tried out with the Golden Eagles. From there he contacted the coach and decided to come down for a tryout. When he was at UC for his tryout, he instantly fell in love with the small, family feeling campus. “Everyone was friendly and the team was a giant family”. From there he signed with the Golden Eagles. His favorite memory of UC so far was in the WVIAC Final of 2009. A night game under the lights of Schoenbaum Stadium.

Rob enters his second year as co-captain of UC after a very successful freshman year. Son of Colette and Darryl, and older brother of Paul, Rob has played since he was old enough to kick a ball. He first started attending training sessions at the age of 3, when he used to train at Belfry FC on Saturday mornings under the guidance of Coach Henry. His first pair of boots were Umbro and his first soccer jersey was Tottenham Hotspur, although he is a lifelong fan of his local team, Everton. He attended his first soccer camp at the age of 6 and was scouted by Everton. It was a dream come true, and he recalls scoring a hat-trick against local rivals Liverpool in a tournament as one of the fondest memories of his childhood. When he was 9, he joined Crewe Alexandra, which is renowned in England for its high production of professional players. He signed as an outside midfielder but was soon molded into a central midfielder and 5 years later, at age 14, he moved on to Stockport County, and at age 16, signed a Youth Training Scheme contract with the club. Consequently, Rob left school at 16 to pursue his career in the hope of turning professional. At the end of his 2 year contract he was not offered professional terms, and Rob started looking for other ways to continue his soccer career. He received an email from Coach Duernberger and never looked back. His major influence in his career has always been his dad, but says without the coaching from Everton and Crewe, he would not be the player he is. His best moment during his time was scoring in, and then going on to win the Atlantic Region final/Sweet 16 match vs. Slippery Rock last season. His worst moment was being released by Stockport County. He loves the passion and aggression in soccer, and says that “nothing beats the feeling of your team scoring a really important goal, or making a really aggressive and strong tackle”. He hates playing on bad surfaces though.

Eddie plays his final college soccer year with the golden eagles as a senior transfer from DI Coastal Carolina. Growing up in Scotland, Eddie began playing soccer at age 4 or 5, and was influenced by family and friends, who he used to enjoy playing with. His first pair of boots were Mitre „Goals‟ and his first jersey was Glasgow Celtic, who he supports to this day. His first team was Salvesen Boys Club, and from there he has gone on to play for North Merchiston Boys Club, Motherwell FC, Armadale Thistle FC and Blackburn United FC. In his career, Eddie has played in every position except goalkeeper, and remembers just loving to be playing soccer all day, every day as a youngster. He notes Richard Huxford as his most influential coach. “He taught me the necessary disciplines and always gave positive encouragement.” In high school, he won the League, and League Cup before moving out to America at age 20. He played Junior College Soccer for two years in West Virginia with Potomac State College, before moving to Coastal Carolina on the slightly warmer Myrtle Beach for his junior year. Things didn‟t quite work out though in South Carolina, and Eddie is very grateful that Coach Duernberger gave Eddie the chance to finish out his career at UC. Eddie loves the beauty of the game, and the idea of 11 individual battles going on all over the pitch. “I love the feeling of my team beating 11 other players.” His worst moments so far are losing in the Scottish Cup Finals, and all the injuries he has

Son of Marissa and John Osborne, and brother to Lewis, Ryan was granted just two years of eligibility, which means he will not play his senior year, as well as sitting out his freshman year. One of four Brits on the team, Ryan grew up playing soccer, and from age 5 was heavily influenced by his dad and granddad. His first pair of boots were Adidas and his first soccer shirt was Tottenham Hotspur. The first team he played for was St. Joseph‟s. From then, he has gone on to represent Carleton JFC, Barnsley FC‟s academy, Pontefract Collieries, Ossett Albion FC, and Pontefract Corinthians. In this time, he has played in every position except goalkeeper. His fondest memories growing up include playing in summer tournaments and dying his hair to match the color of his jersey. In high school he was named team captain, and for Pontefract Collieries he scored 4 goals and added 3 assists in an 8 game span. He loves the passion of the game, but sometimes thinks it can be a very harsh game. His best moment at UC so far is scoring on his debut in front of his parent at Shippensburg in 2010, and believes nothing is worse than having to sit out for a full year of college soccer. Over his career, he lists his father John, and coaches Iain McCabe and Roland Lanes as his biggest influences. Ryan is majoring in Physical Education.

Marshall joins the Golden Eagles in his 3rd of 4 eligible years as a transfer from Southwest Mississippi Community College. Son of Appolonia and Marcell Ngobidi, Marshall started playing at age 7, influenced by his uncles. His first soccer boots were Adidas, and his first team was the Truckers. He then went on to represent Bears FC and Seventeen FC. During his career he has played in midfield and as a forward, but has always been an offensive minded player. Marshall has always been a winner, and his favorite childhood memories involved winning championships, touring and going on floats after winning. In high school Marshall won a championship and lists this amongst his highest team achievements, as well as picking up the WVIAC regular season and conference tournament championships. He lists is high school and junior college coaches amongst his biggest influences. At Southwest Mississippi, Marshall led the team with 20 goals and 10 assists in his two year spell. He achieved NJCAA All-Region honors in both years, consequently earning himself the recognition of Coach Duernberger at UC. Marshall loves the passion involved in soccer, and the excitement that goes with it, “it is what I grew up with”. However, Marshall dislikes how unfair the game can be (except when the luck is on his side). Marshall is majoring in psychology.

Jordan McCollam finds his way to UC from Cincinnati, OHIO. This is his 3rd year playing for the Golden Eagles and is among the first players to play for coach Duernberger during his career. He is a graduate from Turpin High and son to Jan and Greg McCollum. Beginning soccer Jordan found himself wearing his first jersey; a Cincinnati Blue Sharks T-shirt. “My dad always wanted me to play soccer even though he played football” said Jordan, and this proved to be helpful as he is now playing for the University of Charleston. He found himself playing all over the field growing up. His many positions were: Left Back, Midfield, Sweeper, and now a Forward for UC. With these positions came a variety of teams as well: Blue Sharks, Grey Wolves, SCSA, Cincinnati Classics, Ohio Elite FC, and ODP Ohio State South. Playing for Turpin high school, Jordan had earned a starting position all 4 years, member of 1st District Championship Team, 2 District runner-up teams, and 2nd team All-WVIAC. Jordan has followed his fathers footsteps in attending the University of Charleston. Some of Jordan coaches who have influenced him to this point are his ODP coach, which he says was the first time he ever seriously played Sweeper, and really enjoyed it. Also the Ohio Elite coach, which was the first time he ever played forward and scored 13 goals within the first season.

He has played in a variety of positions, ranging from right back and center back, to center midfield and striker. Interestingly, his first and last high school goals were both free kicks. His first was a free kick from 30 yards out, his last being from half field. He picked up an All-Conference Award as a senior, and his high school were Sectional Champs and made a regional appearance in his senior year. His major coaching influence was his high school coach, Frank Gizzo. Adam is nicknamed ADAM G by his teammates. His favorite thing about soccer is winning and he hates losing. Son of Mary Herbert and Ali Dastgheib, and brother of Amir Dastgheib, Bijan finds his way on the Golden Eagle Roster for his 1st year as a freshman. He began soccer at the age of 4, wearing a pair of Kelme cleats and representing the Cheetahs. Not only did Bijan play for the Cheetahs, but he comes to UC with a variety of experience from different teams. Some of the teams Bijan has played for in his career are: West Virginia Vipers, Chaos, WV Elite, and Revolution. With theses teams came a variety of positions. Over the course of his childhood he has played defense and midfield, and now finds his way to forward for the University of Charleston. Bijan came across the University through Coach Duernberger, where he tried out and was asked to play for the team. Some specific coaches who have influenced Bijan through his life are Keno Johnson and his father. “If there is something to love about soccer” said Bijan, “It is the speed of play and the continuation of the game; the training hurts but will pay off in the end”. His best moment in his soccer career was scoring two goals in a rival match his senior year at St. Albans. His worst moment was losing that same game 3-2.

WVIAC Information

Founded in 1924, the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) rates as one of the oldest leagues at the small-college level. The league's 15 member schools include: Alderson- Broaddus College, Bluefield State College, University of Charleston, Concord University, Davis & Elkins College, Fairmont State University, Glenville State College, Ohio Valley University, Shepherd University, West Liberty University, West Virginia State University, West Virginia Wesleyan College and Wheeling Jesuit University. The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Seton Hill University joined the WVIAC for the 2006-07 season. Pitt Johnstown and Seton Hill are the WVIAC’s first out-ofstate members since 1932. The WVIAC moved into the NCAA Division II ranks in 1994 after a long affiliation with the NAIA. The conference was the only one in Division II to place a team in the national quarterfinals in men’s basketball, football and baseball during the 1998-99 academic year. In 2002 the WVIAC, along with two other conferences, became the first league to earn four bids to the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship. The conference’s basketball tournament is one of the longest-running events in collegiate hoops; the 73rd annual event was held earlier this year at the Charleston Civic Center. Attendance at the WVIAC tournament ranks among the highest in Division II. The conference also boasts a 10-station radio network for the tournament. Women’s sports were incorporated into the WVIAC during the 1981-82 academic year as the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association was absorbed. Currently, women’s championships are offered in softball, golf, tennis, track, basketball, volleyball, cross country and soccer. Men’s championships are conducted in football, cross country, soccer, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis and track. The league was recognized by the State Journal as one of “55 Great Things About West Virginia” in the magazine’s April 2007 edition. The WVIAC is headquartered in Princeton, W.Va. 81

WVIAC Information

Commissioner Barry Blizzard has been at the helm of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference since his appointment in November, 1987. Through his very able leadership as the conference's fourth commissioner, the WVIAC continues to enjoy national respectability and competitiveness among the 16 member schools and 17 sponsored sports. One of the major accomplishments during Blizzard's tenure as WVIAC Commissioner has been managing the conference's transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II, which occurred in the fall of 1995. He also oversaw the move of the conference headquarters to Princeton in 1987. Prior to NCAA affiliation, Barry held, at various times, a number of NAIA-related national and regional offices. One in particular was a term as president of the NAIA National Athletic Directors Association. Blizzard's background in intercollegiate sports and sports management has served him well to deal with the tasks of overseeing this league. Before taking on his present position, he was the athletic director and sports information director at Bluefield State College, for 11 years beginning in 1976. A two-year period as assistant athletic director and SID, preceded this. The Commissioner is a native of Bramwell, WV, and received his undergraduate degree at Bluefield State College. He earned a Masters in American History at Radford (VA) University. Barry lives in Princeton. He and his late wife, Vicki, have two married daughters, Amie and Emilie.

Coach Stevens is a pioneer with tremendous vision, passion and enthusiasm for the sport of volleyball. Coach Bren was named WVIAC “Coach of the Year” in 1995, 1997 and 2001. She was inducted into the University of Charleston’s Hall of Fame in 2006. As a player she earned both WVIAA and Mid-West Regional First-team honors. Stevens serves as a leader/teacher to other coaches through a mentoring program established by the AVCA. Bren has also spent five years serving on NCAA RAC Committees both in the Atlantic and Great Lake Regions. While the accomplishments of many teams end on the court, that simply is where the University of Charleston’s begins. For the past three seasons Bren’s teams have been named as Academic All-America teams, by reaching a team GPA of 3.3 or higher. Bren and her teams are very active in community service projects including those which involve the Make-a-Wish foundation and the Susan G. Komen fund.

Compliance Coordinator

Intensity is the word which best describes Coach Winn. As an athlete, a student, and a coach, she has always displayed concentrated focus. This focus has led her to numerous awards. As a player, she reached the epitome of all athletics—the Olympic Games. In both 1984 and 1988, she was a member of the United States Team Handball Olympic Team. During her collegiate years, she was an Academic All-American with a 4.0 GPA and a two-time Honorable Mention All-American. She still owns 10 school records at the University of Charleston including most points in a season (682), scoring average (22.7), and the most points in a game (44). In 1993, when her team won the NAIA II National Championship, she was voted Coach of the Year in the Frontier Conference and District 12, as well as honored as the NAIA II National Coach of the Year. To date, she has 427 career victories.

Sherry Winn Compliance Coordinator

She began her coaching career at the University of Minnesota—Morris where she took an eight year losing program and turned it into a winning one in just two seasons. At Montana State University—Northern, her teams compiled an overall record of 139 wins and 20 losses, winning the Frontier Conference five times in a row. The move to the University of Southern Colorado proved to be a difficult one. Once again faced with a program which had not won for years, Coach Winn was eager to do battle. Unfortunately, she was crippled physically and emotionally with chronic pain and discovered her teams could not win without her healthy at the helm. During the nine seasons she has been at the University of Charleston, Coach Winn has created a true sense of team chemistry and positive work ethic claiming an overall record of 200 wins versus only 76 losses. While she is a passionate coach on the sideline, she is equally passionate about her players off the court. The Golden Eagles team GPA has never dipped below 3.2 and every senior who remained with the program has earned a degree from the University of Charleston. Coach Winn also believes in community programs involving her players in several projects 89 throughout the year.
