About UC

In its first 125 years, the University of Charleston has grown from a small seminary college to a naEonally-‐recognized university comprised of four locaEons. UC was founded by the Southern Methodist denominaEon in 1888 as Barboursville Seminary and became a college in 1889. In 1901 it was renamed Morris Harvey College in honor of a prominent donor. During the Great Depression, the college moved to Charleston to take advantage of the larger metropolitan area. The Board of Trustees changed the name from Morris Harvey College to the University of Charleston on December 13, 1978. Currently, there are approximately 2,000 full-‐Eme students in undergraduate programs. UC has pharmacy, business, and physicians assistant graduate programs. UC is culturally diverse, hosEng students from 34 countries and 31 states. UC is proud to say that 94% of graduates are employed or in grad school within six months of graduaEon. Charleston was ranked among Top 20 Regional Colleges by the Princeton Review. UC is home to fiYeen varsity athleEc teams. On August 1,2012 UC entered into an agreement with Mountain State University who was undergoing financial trouble. UC announced new locaEons in Beckley and MarEnsburg, W.Va. On January 1,2013 UC-‐Beckley, UC-‐MarEnsburg and UC-‐Online became part of the UC family. With these addiEons, UC grew to 32 academic programs, 360 employees, and over 2,000 students. The mission of the University of Charleston is to educate each student for a life of producEve work, enlightened living, and community involvement.

The Mountain East Conference ‘MEC’ Mountain East Conference 600 Marketplace Avenue, Suite 102 | Bridgeport, WV 26330 304.924.1MEC (1632) | media@mountaineast.org www.mountaineast.org The Division ll Mountain East Conference is in its inaugural year in 2013, replacing the WVIAC conference aYer an eighty nine year reign which began in 1924. The MEC has been a solid replacement, and many agree an improvement on the previous conference for West Virginia. The West Virginia Intercollegiate AthleEc Conference held fiYeen teams in it’s last season (2012-‐13), whereas the Mountain East Conference now holds only twelve teams of an all round higher standard, on the field and academically. The following nine teams from the WIAC conference were transferred: Concord University, Fairmont State University, Glenville State University, Shepherd University, University of Charleston, West Liberty University, West Virginia State University, Wheeling Jesuit University, & West Virginia Wesleyan University. The addiEon of Notre Dame College, Urbana University and University of Virginias College at Wise made for one of the most compeEEve conferences in the region and already fierce rivalries have been born.

MEC Championships

The Mountain East Conference hosts sixteen championships overall. Eight men’s conferences and eight women’s conferences of differing sports comprise these championships. For men, the sports are: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track & field. For women, the sports are: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, track & field and volleyball. Each year, the best teams from each conference progress forward into the conference tournament compeEEon for their respecEve sport. The format of the tournament may slightly vary per sport, but the outcome is the same; become conference tournament champions. This presEgious award is the pinnacle of many teams seasons, but can also help them to progress into the naEonal NCAA tournament. AYer the tournament is over, the MEC honors the best performers with individual awards. The outstanding players are menEoned in a first or second team giving an extra incenEve to excel.

2012 Season Review The UC Women’s team finished the 2012 season with a 9-‐9-‐3 record. Their season started off with a series of losses, some to naEonally ranked opponents. The Golden Eagles showed their true character when they bacled all season to turn their season around. Their hard work was rewarded with a 5th place ranking going into the WVIAC tournament. The Golden Eagles beat the 3rd seed Shepherd in the quarterfinals. Thanks to unforeseen weather from Hurricane Sandy, the WVIAC tournament was relocated to Charleston. The 5th place Golden Eagles found themselves hosEng the semi-‐final and final match. The women found themselves in a very familiar tournament match up. They were in the semi-‐finals with Alderson-‐Broaddus who had ended the Charleston season two consecuEve semi-‐finals before this. Charleston was determined to end that steak and used the home field advantage to upset the top seed Alderson-‐Broaddus 1-‐0. The final match against rival Wesleyan did not go as expected. A cheeky first half goal was enough for Wesleyan to take home the trophy. The Golden Eagles were upset, but proud of their overall success. On an individual level, Charleston came away with six players on the All-‐ WVIAC squad. Elyse Surbaugh was named The WVIAC Player of the Year. She paced the Golden Eagles with six goals and five assists. Surbaugh was the first Golden Eagle to earn this honor. Sophomore Holly Bigg, Juniors Kimberly D’Angelo, Bricany Loveland, and Renee Boudreau, and Senior Angela Petrizzo were awarded with All-‐Conference accolades. In the classroom, the University of Charleston women's soccer team has been honored for excelling in the classroom by the NaEonal Soccer Coaches AssociaEon of America for the sixth consecuEve year.

2013 Season Review Coming off a high note from the 2012 season, The University of Charleston Golden Eagles were picked to finish second in the 2013 preseason coaches poll. The 2013 roster was very similar to the 2012 roster aYer UC only lost three seniors, although one was WVIAC Player of the Year Elyse Surbaugh. The team brought back a solid group of now upperclassmen who earned valuable minutes and experience as freshmen and sophomores last season. Charleston also boosted the lineup with some experienced transfers who challenged the returners for starEng roles and add depth at every posiEon. In normal Charleston fashion, the women started their 2013 campaign verse tough regional opponents and did well, winning two of the three, showing resiliency with a late 87th minute game winner. These tough games and late scoring seemed to to be a forecast of the season to come. Unfortunately, the Charleston Golden Eagles were on the receiving end of bad sport luck that can only be pictured in a movie. This made games very hard on the women, who found themselves bacling from behind early on in games. The team was truly scrappy and hardworking having five come from behind victories this season. The found their stride the last five conference games, scoring a remarkable eighteen goals. The women never lost sight of the big picture; making the playoffs. The Golden Eagles season ended in the semi-‐final matchup against rival Wesleyan in a 2-‐1 loss. Overall on the year, the team finished 9-‐7-‐2 , 7-‐5-‐2 in conference. With the end of the season came graduaEon from nine UC seniors. Five of the nine had been four year players for UC. The large group had members placed on the All conference, All Region teams and a WVIAC Freshman of the Year. The Golden Eagles were pleased to announce six players making a MEC team. Bricany Loveland, Kimberly D’Angelo, and Holly Bigg earned First Team honors. Rachel McCormick and transfer Isabella Jaffin eared Honorable MenEon. Freshman Lydia Murrary was placed on the MEC All Freshman Team.
