a Chinese takeout food carton, a sterling silver gardening spade, a hip flask shaped like a fish, or, from back in the rotary phone days, a sterling silver telephone dialer that a lady could keep in her purse and pull out to make a call without endangering her manicure.”

t is another shining moment for Tiffany & Co. The luxury brand has just released the new Tiffany Home & Accessories Collection, reminding the world of its rich heritage in gifting. The collection—chic, artisanalmade pieces forged from the finest materials, most lustrous of all sterling silver—is noted American designer Reed Krakoff’s first for the brand. Appointed chief artistic officer for Tiffany earlier this year after a much-heralded tenure at Coach, Krakoff has, with his archival-inspired debut, produced a sterling example of how to rework whimsy into sophistication with a current sensibility.

Beyond the collection’s approachable charm is real substance—sterling silver, bone china, cut crystal, porcelain, and leather. In transforming these everyday objects into objets d’art, Krakoff showcases the depth of his savoir-faire with a variety of different materials. In sterling silver are his reinterpretations of serviceable tools, including the drinking straw, the protractor, and the paper cup, and fanciful décor from bookends and a ball of yarn to a paperweight and a wiry bird’s nest. Many other pieces, like the first aid box, the AM/PM box and a tin can, also in sterling silver, feature a discreet Tiffany Blue® enamel accent. A domino set blends the shiny metal with richly rendered American walnut for a stylish mix at the gaming table, while a ruler of the same combination of materials measures up to chic. Color-blocked for the occasion is a new series of supple, hand-finished leather accessories, such as cases for both cosmetics and a camera, a notebook trio and a Tiffany shopping bag. There is even a cozy cashmere baby blanket to christen fresh offerings in the newborn category.

“Tiffany has always been a place where people go to discover extraordinary, timeless gifts and accessories for themselves and loved ones,” says Krakoff. “With these new designs, we are re-establishing our leadership in this area.” As if it was ever in question. Tiffany made have made its bones in fine jewelry, but it’s also made an art of homewares and luxuries for all of life’s gifting occasions. It is these legacies, and others, that Krakoff reinterpreted to appeal to contemporary tastes. Combining intelligent irreverence with the highest level of quality, craftsmanship and design, the collection elevates the everyday. This, explains Krakoff, is a concept “at the heart of American luxury—a sort of effortless, off-handed, understated luxury that is in your life every day as opposed to something precious that you put on a shelf and take out only for special occasions. That whole idea that luxury doesn’t equal formality is so important.”

Tiffany Home

The collection’s timeless motifs also pull from the past. The wheat-leaf in bone china and cut crystal pieces, for example, is a pattern that dates to the 1900s, has appeared in two previous Blue Books and still marks the doors of Tiffany’s flagship location in New York City. The diamond point, meanwhile, brings a geometric dimension to barware, desk accessories and more. New glass designs are hand-blown and feature an individually applied Tiffany & Co. seal. All of these tokens are of heirloom quality—perfect to gift individually or collect piece-by-piece, then lovingly pass on.

Take the centerpiece of the collection: the Loring Tea Set. Handcrafted by Tiffany silversmiths, this gleaming achievement recreates tabletop accessories conceived decades earlier by the brand’s design director emeritus, John Loring; it’s exquisite and treasurable, but edgy too, featuring an industrial detail found in New York City’s streets and subways. Underscoring the stupendous looking set, which was hand-worked for months during a process that honors Tiffany’s long heritage in hollowware, is an artful sense of utility. It’s a historical recast for modern times, an era not much given to the dusting off of anything. To have is to use—that’s the beauty of now.

It is, after all, the season of giving. Why think outside the Tiffany Blue® box when Reed Krakoff has already done that so beautifully for you? Tiffany.com

“I think what makes a life beautiful is when you live with things that are both functional and incredible to look at,” explains Krakoff. “The concept of American design is that form follows function. That’s an idea that’s essential to this collection. Our archives are full of objects that embody this spirit, such as a sterling silver pill box in the shape of

usic has always been part of Yuga Cohler’s life, but it took him a few years to feel passion for it. “Both of my parents are musicians, so I started at a very early age— piano at 3 and violin at 5,” he says. “However, I didn’t really start enjoying music until I was 12, when I went to my first music camp.” Since then, Cohler has never put aside creative discipline, which today is an important part of his life. At only 28 years old, Cohler is already an internationally-known orchestral conductor, while also working as a senior software engineer and manager at Google, having graduated summa cum laude in computer science from Harvard University. “My grandfather is a computer scientist and he taught me QBasic when I was 6,” he says. “It aroused my interest in math, logic and puzzles. I think that an understanding of the systemic facets of technology that my work cultivates—an appreciation for design, an apprehension of large-scale systems, a belief in process—is essential to anybody looking to engage in 21st-century culture.” As if it isn’t enough to be a science expert, Cohler is also a musical genius. These seemingly disparate fields are complementary for Cohler. “My junior year of college, I interned at Goldman Sachs as a strategist in the investment banking division,” he confesses. “I worked 11- to 12hour days and listened to Kanye West all day long at my desk. Through that experience, I came to understand that the structures underlying Kanye’s music are no different from those that underlie classical music, and thought it would be interesting to put on concerts that explicitly point out similarities like these.” Appointed music director of the Young Musicians Foundation (YMF) Debut Chamber Orchestra in Los Angeles in 2015, Cohler explored this idea of combining popular and classical music through “The Great Music Series,” starting with “Yeethoven,” a concert that boldly compared the works of Kanye West and Beethoven. “Many of the best cultural innovations are born from combinations of distinct traditions,” explains Cohler, referencing modern cuisine as an example. “Popular music owes much of its theoretical backbone to the tradition of Western classical music, and I think the values inherent in classical music can help popular music evolve in interesting ways. At the same time, classical music can learn from the iron-clad ties to modern-day culture by which popular music is defined.”

Yuga Cohler

Listening to hip-hop, electronic music, Korean and Japanese pop, among many other genres, Cohler’s open mind and impressive path are a testament to both his talent for and love of innovation that he showcases all over the planet. Having a close relationship with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Cohler appeared several times in concert on Japanese national television and recently did an international tour with the orchestra and musician Yoshiki. Frequently invited to Europe and different places in the United States, and currently a director of the Asia/America New Music Institute, Cohler is successful in everything he does. Although Cohler is unconvinced that music is essential, “…I think it’s inevitable,” he offers. “You don’t need music to survive, but if you’re surviving, you’re probably either consuming or producing music. For me, music is a platform through which you can reach anybody, because it’s not tied to any predetermined meaning. That lack of intrinsic significance makes music an ideal medium for a type of universal communication.” Reaching all types of communities through the vitality of an orchestra, transcending categories while inventing another, more global vision is definitely among Cohler’s most impressive skills. With his creativity and ambition exceeding music, Cohler describes his dream project: “A start-up/media company that produces content designed to make its audience think more deeply and deliberately. It would promote and provoke thought by integrating the expected with the unexpected, the commonplace with the extraordinary, the popular with the sophisticated.” Some people are born with many talents and they know how to make the most of them. Whether through music or technology, Cohler always finds a way to create something unique from a variety of influences.

WANDERLUST | Lofoten Islands

Lofoten Islands

S

ome travel experiences change the way you see the world. They invite you to contemplate the beauty of the earth, to connect with nature and forget about fast-paced contemporary life. Take for instance, an escape to the Nordic wonderland of Norway. When making the journey to Norway, most travelers stop in the country’s capital Oslo and visit its architectural jewel, the Opera House, as well as the historical Akershus Fortress and the famous Munch Museum, to name just a few attractions. Others also take to the road to the charming city of Bergen and explore sublime fjords along the way. But if a little more adventurous, go much further north to see a place that is truly unique. Above the artic circle, the Lofoten archipelago—which consists of many islands with small fishing villages nestled in fjords—offers breathtaking panoramas. Whether driving, hiking, kayaking, bicycling or going on a boat trip, this peaceful haven reveals majestic views over the mountains and sandy-white beaches with crystal clear, yet cold, water. Each season invites visitors to explore a different aspect of the islands, with many activities within reach. From September to mid-April, when the northern lights are visible at night, thousands of colors appear in the sky, are reflected in the sea, and create a magic symphony of hues and contrasts. As the Lofoten Islands are situated just beneath the aurora oval, they offer some of the best chances to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

such as Eliassen Rorbuer situated on the tiny island of Hamnøy, the Lofoten Islands also comprise different types of hotels, guesthouses and campsites. One particular hospitality and residential project that will include an amphitheater, a spa, hiking opportunities and sea water basins catches a lot of attention. Named Lofoten Opera Hotel, the complex, slated for completion around 2020, will spread over 118,000 square feet in Glåpen, further west of Lofoten. Set in a spectacular location, “the site stretches out toward the sea both to the south and the west,” say the architects of the design firm Snøhetta, which also designed the Oslo Opera House. “It creates a link between the ocean and the tall mountains to the north and northwest. The main goal is, in our opinion, to find the development patterns and shapes that optimize the site’s potential with regard to functionality, architecture, and user experience.” Opened and protective at the same time, the organic, serpentine-shaped building will create “an inner and outer space,” according to the architects. As one of the most beautiful places in the world to admire natural wonders, the Lofoten Islands have inspired many artists; it’s a land that promotes cultural dialogue and fosters access to art in remote locations. Founded in 2012 by Venke and Rolf Hoff, contemporary art gallery KaviarFactory occupies a wind-washed old caviarprocessing factory in Henningsvær, dramatically perched over the sea. Part of Artscape Nordland, an international project that aims to bring art to those who live among few or no museums, Dan Graham’s sculpture, “Untitled,” is located 20 minutes west of Svolvær. With its two-way mirror, it captures the light and landscape, playing with reflections in a poetic way. Surprisingly, the small village of Henningsvær attracts contemporary street artists, including Pøbel and Dolk, and Mr.Hmm, whose work brings color to buildings and bus shelters.

Lofoten Islands

Between late May and mid-July, the days seem endless, offering one the opportunity to golf, walk in nature or paddle through still waters until midnight—or even later— witnessing the almost unreal reddish-yellow light. As Norwegian writer Knut Hamsun (1859-1952)— awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920—described in his book Pan, “Night was coming on again; the sun just dipped into the sea and rose again, red, refreshed, as if it had been down to drink. I could feel more strangely on those nights than anyone would believe.” A unique sense of peace and quiet pervades the whole archipelago, transporting everyone into another world. Another must-see is Lofoten’s stretch of the E10 road, designated a National Tourist Route for its scenic beauty. Just off it, a service building with an amphitheater is the perfect stop for viewing the midnight sun.

More than ever, disconnecting from technology, experimenting deeper silence, and taking the time to observe and just breathe are luxuries that few places encourage. Once you find one of them, you understand why it is so precious.

Surfing, fishing, horseback riding, diving, skiing and mountain climbing are some of the many ways to immerse oneself in the spectacular landscape. Particularly known for the old fishermen’s cabins (rorbuer) that have been restored and transformed into modern accommodations,

There is something about the embrace of an old building— the feeling it engenders, which is rich and specific, whether or not it is of one’s time period or before it. There is a sense and a spirit that only architecture of a certain age can offer. This is certainly true of Park City landmark the Washington School House. Built in 1889, before Utah was a state, the building served as a public school for most of its early life. Later it was owned by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, which used it for dances and dinners. By the 1970s, it was commandeered for a homesite called the Lodestar. And on the acquisitions went. Today, it seems that everyone in town has a story about the Washington School House. For its current owner Marcy Holthus, the narrative begins in the 1980s, when she first laid eyes on the structure. Decades on, in 2009, she was overcome to learn that the property she calls a “gem” (a diamond in the rough, at the time) was for sale. In the Washington School House, Holthus knew what she had: a historic property with architectural significance that, as she puts it, checked all the boxes. “It is one of the oldest buildings in Park City and in an incredible location,” Holthus offers. “It is right in the historic old town and about 150 steps—yes, I have counted—from the bottom of the ski run Quit’n Time. The building itself is stunning, built from gorgeous locally quarried hammered limestone and into the hillside. I had visions of terracing a pool into the slope—perfect for sipping wine, with steam rising and snow falling. The architecture is beautiful with huge original double hung windows, and of course, the bell tower seen from all over Park City.”

WSH

Holthus’s transformation of the building preserved its historic attributes and the integrity of its original design—one almost hears the crackle of stone and can see the fissures in the rich wood floors. But beauty and limitations forced her design team to think outside the box. “Or inside it, as the case may be,” says Holthus, whose hope of finding “something amazing hidden in the attic or the foundation” were initially dashed, but restored when architect Trip Bennett discovered archival photos that are now matted, framed and adorning the corridors of the hotel. “It is really great to see class photos from the 19th century, and also pictures from 70 years ago, when the building was in total disrepair, with most of the roof missing and snow drifts filling the structure,” says Holthus, who enjoys reinterpreting the hotel’s social scene in the 1940s. “I like this vision I have of people drinking wine and enjoying the beauty of the building, similar to how we do today.”

hen Holthus has a vision, does she ever. The Washington School House Hotel is rhapsodic, perfectly scaled and appointed, so that depending on where one is— fireside by the pool, nestled in the chic ski lounge, or in the lustrously lit living room with a stack of pancakes or a glass of wine—the scene is as stylish as the sensibility is refined, one brimming with Gustavian antiques complemented by au courant color. Hues take their cues from the landscape for a snow-globe of wintry tones: ice whites, cool sky blues and soft shades of gray inspired by the building’s stone facade. Interspersed throughout this palette are prudently placed shades of red in abstract oil paintings and lush Persian rugs that wink at the building’s school house roots—“a reminder of that apple on the desk,” says Holthus. Another reminder is the overall editing, which is simply perfection. Instead of a thousand little things, Holthus adhered to the art of subtlety, streamlining her selection of vintage and modern pieces to a tasteful understatement that is poetically repetitious and always worldly. Abstract oils were purchased from a Bulgarian art dealer in New York City. A mammoth gold gilt mirror once dazzled an opera house in the south of France. A dramatic antler chandelier was locally sourced in Park City, then dipped in white lacquer and draped with Swarovski crystals. Holthus reserves a special fondness for the Penthouse Suite, which she designed as if for herself, with private elevator access and exquisite furnishings, completing a sophisticated pied-a-terre just steps from the mountain and the town.

Hospitality at the Washington School House is, like the building itself, from another era, when staff attended more than it chaperoned. Its handsomely dressed ranks have an almost mystical sense of when to provide whatever one might need at the precise moment it is needed. A ride. A book. A cashmere wrap. It’s all very nuanced and intuitive—this, too, is by design. “We love to disrupt industry norms, ” says Holthus, quickly serving up an example. “I personally have an issue with hotel throws and blankets. You know, the decorative type at the end of a bed or folded on a chair. They always make me nervous when I’m at a hotel. Have they been washed …ever? Even at a five-star hotel, I’m always a bit suspicious. At the Washington School House, we always washed the throws after every stay and tied the freshly laundered blanket with a beautiful grosgrain ribbon. We now give our guests a brand-new, delightfully soft silver-gray polar fleece throw to take home. It’s waiting in their room upon arrival, as a gift, with a clever little note instructing them to ‘Take This.’ Most guests do! Some have been seen wearing them artfully around their shoulders like a giant pashmina upon departure. Any left behind are donated to local shelters or charities. And that’s the only secret I’ll let out of the bag!” There are many others, of course, such as the names of celebrities and captains of the film industry who descend like so many snowflakes on the hotel each winter for the Sundance Film Festival. This may be a closely guarded secret, but one of little surprise. The Washington School House is, naturally, all about class. WashingtonSchoolHouse.com

PHILANTHROPY

cultivating compassion A LOCAL FARM HELPS SEED THE CARE AND FEEDING OF COMMUNITY IN HOPES OF ERADICATING HUNGER IN ORANGE COUNTY Words and Photograph by Amy Adams

I

t’s 2PM on a midsummer Saturday in Southern California. As is now customary, my 12-yearold son Jack and I will run through the gamut of weekend activities: math lectures, Mandarin class, violin lesson. This day, though, the docket also includes our first visit to the Second Harvest Food Bank’s Incredible Edible Farm, a place that will provide Jack with an invaluable opportunity to work in the fields and fulfill his community service requirements for school—and, in so doing, learn one of life’s most valuable life lessons. Giving back is more than words; it’s deeds, long days and devotion to a goal. The day is hot, a dry heat, and seemingly warmer overall. So, cruising with the windows down, wind whipping through our hair and both entranced by the warm clime and heady vibration of whizzing air, we turn off the main highway and onto a dirt road that leads to the farm. Instantly we hear the sharp crackling of gravel knocking beneath the tires that kick up a robust wake of dust clouding any visible rear view. We pull in to the dusty parking lot, awed and immediately surprised to see such an expansive and pristine field, neatly manicured in its geometry, overflowing with perfectly proportioned rows of vibrant and abundant greenery. From this vantage point, the farm’s various pickers—those hunched over and benched on overturned crates among swaths of lush terrain—seem rather small by comparison. Joining the scattering, we gather our gardening gloves and oversized straw hats and spend the next few hours pulling and pruning turnips in bold hues of purple and nearly the size of our heads. On this day we glimpse what farm work really means, experience its toil and reward. And what it means to the people who spend countless hours, days, and even years—rain or shine—in these fields, caring for the crops as if they were meant to, in service of a common goal: to help end hunger in Orange County. Having so enjoyed our initial experience at the Incredible Edible Farm, Jack and I return to its fields the following weekend, and the weekend after that. After a while, we come to feel like regulars on the farm, like we belong there, too. With this feeling also comes a sense of pride and excitement in watching the plants and vegetables grow, and being part of producing nutritious food for others to enjoy. Grateful for what this opportunity taught us, and honored to have organizations like the Food Bank, the OC Great Park, the City of Irvine donating land and Solutions for Urban Agriculture contributing resources, we feel part of a deeply concerned coalition, a group that makes it all possible, so close to home. This is the true meaning of nourishment—and something well worth savoring. FeedOC.org

TOUCH OF TUSCANY In the warm, welcoming spirit of early Californian heritage, this Spanish villa placed atop the Pelican Ridge community retains a taste of Tuscany not to be overlooked. From the instant you’re first greeted, authenticity is present with a distinguished, handmade gate constructed from wrought iron through to the individual, meticulously-cut barrel slats on wine cellar floors and ceilings to, ultimately, the sophisticated and immensely refined kitchen envisioned by a prominent chef. And, conclusively, once through double French doors looking beyond the confines of this haven, an ornately majestic scene is represented and truly illustrates what marks Newport Coast, the envy of the California Riviera.
