I

t is not by chance that one comes across the Messner Mountain Museum Corones in northern Italy. Research is required to reach this unique, off-the-beaten-path structure. Even the knowledge of where to find it, however, isn’t enough preparation for the discoveries that await adventurous travelers. Embedded within the summit of Mount Kronplatz, 7,464 feet above sea level, the Messner Mountain Museum Corones offers spectacular 360-degree views over several alpine peaks. Located in the majestic region of the Dolomites, this masterpiece was established by renowned Italian mountaineer Reinhold Messner—the first person to climb all of the world’s 14 mountains more than 26,000 feet high, as well as Mount Everest without the aid of tanked oxygen. One of six facilities that comprise the Messner Mountain Museum, Messner Mountain Museum Corones is dedicated to the exploration of the traditions, history and discipline of mountaineering. “It is a mirror of the world of my childhood—the Geislerspitzen, the central buttress of the Heiligkreuzkofel (the most difficult climb in my whole life) and the glaciated granite mountains of the Ahrn Valley,” Messner says. “On Kronplatz, I present the development of modern mountaineering and 250 years of progress with regard to the equipment. I speak of triumphs and tragedies on the world’s most famous peaks—the Matterhorn, Cerro Torre, K2—and shed light on alpinism with the help of relics, thoughts, [and] works of art, and by reflecting the outside mountain backcloth in the interior of MMM Corones.”

Design

Emerging from the ground, the structure—made of panels formed from glass-reinforced fiber concrete—echoes the jagged limestone peaks of the Dolomites. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, this unconventional, almost futuristic project makes a strong visual statement in the context where nature prevails. Still, it avoids taking center stage over the landscape; rather, it was created to enhance and be at the service of its natural surroundings, in total harmony. Featuring three levels connected by a series of staircases, the museum was built with wide windows that invite natural light into the exhibition spaces. “The idea is that visitors can descend within the mountain to explore its caverns and grottos, before emerging through the mountain wall on the other side, out onto the terrace overhanging the valley far below with spectacular, panoramic views,” said the late architect Zaha Hadid. Stairways from the entry area, at the top level, lead to the lower floors, which host the galleries. The showstopper: a 430-square-foot terrace offering a breathtaking 240-degree panorama across the Alps. “The theme is rock and the great faces; the original, traditional mountain climbing is to rise again here,” said Messner at the time of the museum’s inauguration in July of 2015. “The particular thing about this museum is the combination of the location, the view and the architecture.” Aiming to reduce the building’s footprint, “140,000 cubic feet of earth and rock were excavated and then replaced above and around the completed structure—immersing the museum within Mount Kronplatz,” explained the Zaha Hadid Architects team. Honoring nature and paying tribute to the limit of human potential, Messner Mountain Museum Corones is a place to contemplate, to reflect, to dream. FIELD of DREAMS On ancestral lands, designer India Hicks creates a homegrown ode to her English roots with America Farm Words by Jenn Thornton

I

ndia Hicks is a woman of the world— sophisticated, with an easy air and a beguiling family line. She hails from royal stock but lives a contemporary life, heading an eponymous lifestyle brand business based in America, maintaining a home in the Bahamas, and building another on ancestral lands in her native England named, without irony, America Farm. Near a small storybook village in Oxfordshire, this backdrop is the subject of the new book America Farm: A Slice of England (Rizzoli) and is, at its heart, a celebration of legacy. Here one finds reminders of Hicks’ own, including the glass-encased dress she donned as a bridesmaid at the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, a green velvet cape her mother wore at the king’s coronation, and a 1964 Alfa Romeo in the drive.

Burma, and her mother, Lady Pamela Hicks, who she describes as “the backbone to my life in every possible sense.” The women share a kind of shorthand, of humor, stories and adventures. And practically a border; America Farm is just a few fields from Lady Pamela’s property. The cleverness that one finds at America Farm (the Pop Art-ish display of swim caps but one example) also recalls Hicks’ father, the legendary interior decorator David Nightingale Hicks, who lived an extraordinarily vibrant life. An avowed countryman with a penchant for color, his was a grandiose and enthusiastic talent, and he finished, among other projects, a home for celebrity hairstylist Vidal Sassoon and a private suite for the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace. He also designed ravishing gardens.

“I’m definitely am blessed with a very rich heritage,” admits Hicks, with an astonishingly lack of pretense, considering. “My island life, where I’m based, is a very present life, but I do recognize how important that past is—it is part of what we’re building for the future.” It also is the foundation of America Farm, the field that hosts the country house that Hicks and David Flint Wood built for their family, which includes five children, four teenage sons and a darling little girl, Domino. “For my kids,” the lush country locale is “about bikes and freedom and mud and being outside,” says Hicks, who found inspiration for America Farm in the gracious homes and magnificent gardens of her youth, including the mid-Georgian estate Broadlands, Britwell House, and The Grove. From its avenue of freshly planted trees to farm boots and fireplaces (“David loves a real fire,” she notes), America Farm hints at these remarkable residences, with heirlooms like gorgeous gilt mirrors, marble-topped tables, and a collection of swim caps. Elsewhere are aidememories of bloodlines that date back to the marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

These influences are the foundation of America Farm, a new home created to look like it has always existed. One looks past its treasures and sees signs of contemporary life—a busy, boisterous family, a working mother (entrepreneur, author and designer), and a garden to bring to maturity now that the home is complete. One, it must be said, ideally suited to its family but built with the intention that any other could live there. “It was a really living journey for David and I to bring to life a home for all of our needs,” says Hicks. “A place to work, to live; to have friends or Christmas. It works so well from all different points of view and brilliantly in different seasons.”

Straddling traditions—the Old World of birthright and New World of individualism—America Farm supports the notion that architecture is more than structure, it’s infrastructure, of one’s life, of the future, and of custom. It’s reassurance that, as sure as the rain will fall in England, “comes from creating a home where all my kids want to be,” Hicks says thoughtfully. “This is a shared house. or one week in 1925, Hotel Californian—a dream of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture— expressed the aspiration and ambition of Santa Barbara, a dusty backwater of adobes and outlaws turned SoCal’s place in the sun. But just days after its debut, a devastating earthquake shook the fate of the place, forcing extensive repairs, followed by decades of change, from ownership to overhauls. Floods, economic woes—the grand-dame gracing the waterfront slipped into slow, uncertain decline. Now fully restored, Hotel Californian recently emerged from yet another chrysalis a vision of America’s Riviera for contemporary times. Adjacent to Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone and a reasonable two hours from Los Angeles, 20 minutes from the Santa Barbara Airport, and near the train station, the hotel is, crucially for weekenders, a destination unto itself, steeped in history, luxuries, and proximity—to wine country, Stearns Wharf, Montecito, and more. Should the atmosphere stun, that’s the work—the magic—of celebrity designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard, who complemented the hotel’s Spanish Colonial Revival architecture with custom touches and Moorish appeal, a style that references Santa Barbara’s decorative history. “So many 1920’s buildings in the city and neighboring towns like Montecito were decorated with Moorish motifs as part of their original decor inspirations,” explains Warren Nocon, general manager of Hotel Californian. “This gave him the first directive to build upon; then, to keep it fresh and add more layers to the hotel, bringing it into the 21st century, he added mid-century classics within the furniture inspired by the Italian masters like Gio Ponti, and graphic designs with Ann Sacks tile work that depict 1960’s graphics as well as Moroccan themes.”

That Bullard inherited a remarkable canvas—121 rooms, paseos, gardens, fountains, open plazas , but it is a modern and a rooftop deck (a highpoint with 360-degree views, a pool and outlooks to the shimmering Pacific)—is inarguable. But everywhere is an . example of his stupefying good taste: gilded snake sconces, glistening marble, concrete tile wainscoting, custom cocktail bars, and eye-popping geometric motifs. It’s glamorous but not histrionic, suggestion more than exaggeration. Bullard smartly subdued more dramatic elements like tile and lighting with trim, finished furnishings and elegant surfaces. The beautifully civilized result articulates the essence of Andalusian beauty, sweeping one through the primeval places of so many arches and domes and ancient edifices—castles in Granada, mosques in Morocco, and Ottoman ruins in Tunisia. One can’t help but feel a bit like Alexander after a good deal of conquering in the hotel’s Alcazar Presidential Suite—1,705 square feet and majestically finished in sultry tones of yellow, terracotta, emerald green and eggplant. Featuring patios, verandas, and balconies with sightlines of the Pacific, Santa Ynez mountains and City of Santa Barbara, it is 21st century in attitude and ease, with clean lines and art responsive to the cool, progressive locality.

Hotel Californian may reference great civilizations of the past, but it is a modern hotel with amenities to match. Majorelle, the spa, is an exotica of indigo blue, evoking a traditional Turkish bath. Signature eatery Blackbird is vivid; richly toned and flavored with Contemporary Mediterranean cuisine featuring ingredients sourced in Santa Barbara. Alfresco outpost Goat Tree keeps its bakery cases full but also will happily curate a picnic basket for the beach or a day of wine tasting. orn from an intergovernmental agreement between Abu Dhabi and France in 2007, the Louvre Abu Dhabi—an ode to the dialogue between cultures and the spirit of openness—was 10 years in the making but lifetimes as well. Designed as a cultural landmark, the Louvre Abu Dhabi tells a story based on art, guiding visitors on a journey from ancient to contemporary times. Highlighting universal themes, the museum explores the role of the human in history, discoveries, travel, religion and globalization, among many other subjects. Opened in November 2017 in the booming United Arab Emirates, the project is extraordinary, ambitious in both intention and design. “All climates like exceptions,” says acclaimed French architect Jean Nouvel, who designed the structure. “Warmer when it is cold. Cooler in the tropics. People do not resist thermal shock well. Nor do works of art. Such elementary observations have influenced the Louvre Abu Dhabi. It wishes to create a welcoming world serenely combining light and shadow, reflection and calm. It wishes to belong to a country, to its history, to its geography without becoming a flat translation, the pleonasm that results in boredom and convention. It also aims at emphasizing the fascination generated by rare encounters.”

The architecture of the 23 galleries was inspired by the medina (or “city” in Arabic) and low-lying Arab settlements.

Shaped as a “museum city” in the sea, the Saadiyat Island structure consists of a series of white buildings inspired by traditional Arabic architecture and culture. “It is a project founded on a major symbol of Arab architecture: the dome,” says Nouvel. “But here, with its evident shift from tradition, the dome is a modern proposal. The dome gleams in the Abu Dhabi sunshine. At night, this protected landscape is an oasis of light under a starry dome.” At 590 feet in diameter, with a circumference of 1,854 feet and weighing 7,500 tons (2,600 less than the entire Eiffel Tower), it’s the most fascinating element of the architecture, which can be seen from the sea and the surroundings of Abu Dhabi. Part of the dome’s eight kaleidoscopic layers is the 7,850 starshaped pieces of aluminum and stainless steel that subtly filter sunlight. “It is rather unusual to find a built archipelago in the sea,” Nouvel says. “It is even more uncommon to see that it is protected by a parasol creating a rain of light.” Only four hidden piers support the dome—the highest point of which is 131 feet above sea level and 118 above ground— giving the illusion that the building is floating. The structure is a building of the future not only in its aesthetic, but in environmental terms as well. Targeting a LEED Silver rating, Nouvel’s team gave priority to sustainable design techniques, including the optimization of the perforated ceiling and the use of reflective materials, which allowed reductions in solar gain (42 percent) and the consumption of both energy (27.2 percent) and water (27 percent).

The building’s interior exhibition spaces spans over 92,570 square feet—comprising the 68,890-square-foot Museum Galleries, 21,528-square-foot temporary exhibition space and the 2,153-square-foot Children’s Museum—and hosts around 600 works of art, 300 of which are on loan from famous French cultural institutions such as Paris’s Musée du Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Musée du quai Branly and Centre Pompidou, to name a few. Works are arranged sequentially in 23 galleries. Interestingly, the name of the Louvre museum in Paris is on loan to Louvre Abu Dhabi for 30 years and six months, with the loan of temporary exhibitions to last 15 years and artworks, 10. One sees among the masterpieces from the permanent collection a vast array of styles, techniques, and periods: a 3,000-year-old Middle Eastern gold bracelet with a lion’s head, an 1878 painting by Turkish artist Osman Hamdi Bey, Paul Gauguin’s “Children Wrestling,” Picasso’s collage “Portrait of a Lady” and nine canvases by American painter, sculptor and photographer Cy Twombly. All illustrate the museum’s broad artistic vision. March 10 may have been a rainy Saturday night, but it didn’t stop more than 400 guests from ascending on the glittering ballroom at Pasea Hotel & Spa in Huntington Beach for the annual Celebration of Children: Black & White Ball, hosted by Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Orange County.

Festively attired in black and white with 1920’s touches—think feathered headwear and beaded gowns—guests were in style keeping with this year’s theme, “Back in Time.” During cocktails, the gathering perused a selection of over 100 silent auction items and played casino games. Following a formal dinner accompanied by flappers who entertained guests with a series of songs and tap dancing, awards were presented and the event’s live auction energized by not one but two $50,000 donations for a luxe vacation in Phuket, Thailand—partygoers hit the dance floor. At evening’s end, CASA had raised $1,181,710, making the organization’s fundraiser its most successful to date. For the abused, neglected and abandoned children it serves via a network of volunteer advocates, funds have the power to transform lives. “A lot of the kids we’re working with have been in families where this abuse— whether it’s physical, sexual, abandonment, neglect—has been generational,” says Matthew Wadlinger, CASA’s chief communications officer. “Having loving support and knowing there are human beings out there that want to see you succeed, it’s hard to describe what that means to a child.” The presence of even one stable, caring adult—to look up to, aspire to, rely upon—can empower a child to lead a lead happy, productive life. “It makes our community stronger,” he adds. casaoc.org

Q. Describe some benefits that CASA mentors provide?

The biggest and most important benefit that a mentor provides is simply a reassurance that someone is there for the youth. Willing to listen—without judgment. Someone who cares about what happens to the youth or isn’t happening. Someone who is a positive role model: responsible, consistent, compassionate, present. Sadly, our volunteers might be the only unpaid adult in a youth’s life. But it truly only takes a caring adult to make an impact and change a youth’s life.

The children coming into care seem to have increased needs and are coming from more egregious circumstances. There is an increased need for more volunteers and number in children on our waitlist. Q. What is your greatest source of satisfaction as CEO of CASA? I really appreciate the humanity that is the heart of our organization and as CEO it is something that I get to witness from so many different angles. Working closely with our dependency system is emotionally taxing, difficult work, but I am truly and deeply moved the number of people who are so committed to helping.
