After having finished...the space, I realized that something was missing. It was this Latin American touch. -Bettina Kiehnle

I

t all started while Bettina Kiehnle was earning her master’s degree in London. She was looking through a magazine and came across the Danish brand Frama. Fascinated, she traveled to Copenhagen to visit Frama headquarters. There, she met founder Niels Strøyer Christophersen, an encounter that ultimately shaped her path. After London, Kiehnle spent a year in Los Angeles, where she was drawn to design spaces such as The Future Perfect and The Line. Visits to showrooms, shops, galleries, and art and design fairs helped her to begin conceptualizing.

Design IMA

Back in her hometown of Mexico City, Kiehnle took the plunge, opening IMA in August 2018, when she was just 30 years old. The name, like everything else in the project, was no accident. It stands for “In my apartment”—and is literally the founder’s home, a beautiful flat in the Roma district, in the heart of the city. IMA also means “now” in Japanese, especially significant in an era when technology sometimes makes people forget how to be in the present. At the crossroads between gallery, showroom, cultural space and event venue, IMA’s aesthetic is inspired by both Nordic and Japanese design, and Axel Vervoordt’s work based on the wabi-sabi philosophy. “Here, the people and the pieces interact and dialogue,” Kiehnle says. “After having finished. . .the space, I realized that something was missing. It was this Latin American touch. I knew I had to introduce some

elements from my identity, my country, something warmer. So I took inspiration from the use of colors by famous Mexican architect Luis Barragán on the walls, but I chose different hues such as olive green and terracotta.” Guests are required to make appointments online; but once inside, visitors feel as comfortable as they would in their own home. “Our goal is to create a distinct, more human experience where people, furniture, design and art are part of both its essence and its atmosphere,” Kiehnle says. The apartment features a curated selection of design products and art pieces, all for sale. La Metropolitana and Pablo Rasgado of Mexico, Saúl Sánchez of Colombia and Frama of Denmark are just some of the designers and brands on display at IMA. “Mexico is currently living a creative renaissance,” notes Kiehnle. “We have some extraordinary artists and craftsmen, and the number of foreign designers who decide to move here is constantly increasing.” Promoting the work of local and international creative minds, building a community through both social media and real experiences, and exploring exclusive design collaborations are some of IMA’s many objectives. “According to Japanese designer and author Shigeru Uchida, the only permanent thing is change,” says Kiehnle. “Every time people come here, they will discover something new.” studioima.com

J A PA N E S E SIM PLICIT Y Interior designer, product designer and restaurateur, Shinichiro Ogata is a fascinating creative mind. Words by

K A R IN E MONIÉ

Very few people have talents that range from interior designer to restaurateur, from product designer to entrepreneur. Shinichiro Ogata, founder of Japanese design studio Simplicity, is one of the few. “It is difficult to categorize my work into a title, and I always struggle to answer that question,” he says. “In fact, I strive to update the Japanese way of life and I ask the public to make a judgement.” Washoku (traditional Japanese cuisine), Japanese tea, crafts and interior projects are some of the areas that comprise the rhythm of Ogata’s routine.

According to its founder Shinichiro Ogata, Simplicity’s mission consists of expressing Japan “as one way of how things can be done” while crafting items that are based on traditional methods and fit the modern lifestyle.

CULTURE | Simplicity

D

evoted to shaping the next generation’s culture around Japanese sensibilities and revered age-old techniques, Simplicity subtly brings together two different yet complementary concepts of tradition and innovation. “My starting point is usually some elements with a nostalgic feel, such as natural materials, and some hints of the historic Japanese culture that date back to our ancestors,” Ogata says. “Then I try to update those elements to something as practical as possible for our contemporary lifestyle.”

every aspect of this project, making sure his vision would completely resonate. Since then, the designer and restaurateur opened another restaurant and teahouse, Yakumo Saryo, also in Tokyo. “It is a space where you can indulge, heal the mind and body, and discover the blend of both old and new,” he says. Mixing food and design seems to be an innate process for Ogata, who approaches his role as a restaurateur as a way to express his creativity in its entirety. “The expression of food is not only limited to the dishes; it is also about the design of the space, the tableware, the service,” he explains. “It deals with the holistic experience you have for a few hours when you are savouring a meal in a specific place. Some parts of the Japanese culture can’t be seen, but they can be understood through food.” To completely explore washoku, Ogata was also compelled to develop a set of tableware. Made of 100-percent biodegradable and compostable materials—including bagasse (sugarcane waste), reed pulp and bamboo—WASARA paper tableware features elegant forms and sturdiness thanks to Japanese craftsmanship and skilled methods of trimming. Through projects like WASARA, Ogata designs “the style, manner and methodology of the act of eating,” says Ogata.

Located in Tokyo’s upscale shopping area of Ginza, tea salon and Japanese confectionary shop HIGASHIYA GINZA reflects how a tradition can be adapted to fit a modern context. “While respecting the history of wagashi (traditional Japanese confections), we believe the process of creating our sweets is a quest for a simple and elegant form of design,” Ogata states. The result of a collaboration with prominent craftsmen from all around Japan, the product line S[es] is yet another example of reviving old traditions and techniques. Raw materials such as ceramic, porcelain, urushi (a natural lacquer) and iron are exalted through delicate household objects that combine ancestral practices and modern forms of production. “To cherish tradition is to think of someone in the faraway past, someone who shaped me into who I am,” says Ogata, whose philosophy embraces all aspects of life and translates into many creative expressions, including Japanese cuisine and hospitality. “Since I was a teenager, I’ve wanted to open some kind of store as a community space where people can gather,” he adds. “That’s why I studied interior design. Through this experience, I realized that I had a steadfast Japanese sensibility, which is deeply rooted in my background. I thought food would be a great means to express Japan in contemporary time.”

AC Simplicity

In his book Jiki-fu, Ogata reinterprets Japanese culture, revealing how to use ingredients— such as tiger globefish, royal fern, wild duck, red tilefish, shirako bamboo shoots, shiroshita flounder and horsehair crab, among others—and consider food and tableware as a single entity. “Using invisible natural resources like microorganisms to enhance the original umami flavour [a savory taste, one of the five basic tastes alongside sweetness, sourness, bitterness and saltiness] is what makes Japanese cuisine peculiar,” Ogata says. “Japanese food culture cares deeply about the cycle of nature,” he adds. Nurtured by the beauty of the natural world and inspired by a search for wisdom, Ogata creates products, spaces, and atmospheres where Japanese tradition magically becomes the essential ingredient to the user in a new, serene era. simplicity.co.jp

In 1998, he opened his first restaurant, HIGASHIYAMA Tokyo, which is nestled in a quiet, detached house in Meguro-ku, Tokyo. Ogata worked on

THE SEA On the Japanese island of Honshu, a treasure that, like its coveted cultured pearls, is luminous and well worth a pilgrimage across the world.

Wanderlust Amanemu Words by

Wanderlust Amanemu

WANDERLUST | Amanemu

O

n Japan’s scenic Kii Peninsula in the Mie Prefecture of Honshu, Amanemu is the physical expression of the Japanese belief in ikiagi, which translates to one’s reason for being. Deriving its name from the Sanskrit word for “peace” and the Japanese term nemu, or “sharing joy,” Amanemu converges all these concepts, making hospitality both a place and a practice. And it must be said, an art. Surrounded by the mystical forests of cherry forests in spring and red maple leaves in autumn, and overlooking Ago Bay— the “Bay of Pearls”—Amanemu projects the beauty of these valued sea gems, one of rarity and worth, a prize that comes from discovery. In this case, one not for the faint of heart: arrival here means either a two-hour train ride or shorter helicopter flight from Nagoya, where one comes via a flight from a major city like Singapore or Beijing. But it is a great reversal of fortune that rewards the effort: Amanemu is all about the destination, not the journey.

Wanderlust Amanemu

Amanemu is first and foremost a place of panoramas— glimpsed from the property’s 24 suites and expansive two-bedroom villas. Each option is a wonder, minimally designed with modern Wabi-Sabi reserve featuring a calming neutral palette and honest materials, more appointed than ornamented, but always exquisitely, with private onsens (mineral hot springs). Whether of a lush garden or pictorial islet, each scene from these offerings is a visual feast that sets one adrift in a fantasy of serenity and intention.

The resort’s public spaces—sublimely designed in coordination with the beautifully-toned and mindfully-choreographed living quarters so that each category blends holistically— are situated to consume these views with walls that open so that interior and exterior simply melt into one stunning and meditative whole. Seamless is hardly a lovely enough word for what is an aesthetic that is reliably authentic and pure.

Wanderlust Amanemu

M|W|A QUARTERLY

Water is a presiding element at Amanemu, especially at Aman Spa, where it is used as a healing agent.

And yet it applies, from the accommodations to the resort’s restaurant, which follows a similar ethos and makes use of the region’s gourmet heritage as the breadbasket of the ancient Imperial court, in the main pavilion; the library, where reading materials in languages that speak to the resort’s international clientele; its serene outdoor lap pool with daybeds at the water’s edge; and spa pavilion, where, along with a boutique bursting with delicate pearl jewelry, art and local handcrafted wares, is reason alone to visit Amanemu—the spa itself.

Wanderlust Amanemu

The first Aman property to be a mineral hot springs destination, Amanemu takes full advantage of the area’s abundant natural springs, most finely with Aman Spa, which provides two calming onsen bathing pavilions with waters rich in minerals from its own spring, offering a strong sentient experience. Still other complements include suites for Watsu and Aqua Movement water treatments, movement programs and beauty therapies, and treatments that incorporate local and seasonal Japanese herbs, essential oils and chemical-free infusions from Aman. A fitness center and glass-walled yoga studio with outdoor deck promise other forms of renewal. But the beauty of Amanemu is a natural one—local sites and recreation is plentiful and always in striking step with the backdrop of the resort. In its easily accessible midst is IsheShima National Park, Ise Jingu, a revered ancient shrine to the goddess Amanterasu-omikami dating to the late 600s; and Ago Bay itself, the origin of the Akoya pearl oyster, among the world’s most cultured variety. There are pearl oyster farms excursions in conjunction with beach barbecues and picnics, as well as local crab fishing and sea expeditions, and Shoma School of Nature’s wealth of activities from kayaking to mountain biking to hiking. From resort grounds to its opportunity-rich outskirts, Amanemu is as lustrous as its most celebrated export—something truly precious. aman.com

Don’t neglect to look for the climate-controlled, 1,500-bottle wine room through the wall of glass. There are also four parks, several green belts and numerous hiking trails. Conveniently located just outside the community gates, Crystal Cove Promenade paves the way for fastcasual and fine-dining and shopping, while Crystal Cove State Beach—directly across Pacific Coast Highway—is pedestrian-accessible via a secure association gate.

ounded in 1995 by Mary Anna Jeppe, the Decorative Arts Society (DARTS) formed to help support nonprofits advocating for women, children and families in Orange County and, in doing so, beauty in all its forms. The organization’s annual Lecture Series is a fundraising bonanza for this mission and features a variety of top-notch talent, from internationally recognized interior designers and architects to curators and art historians. Now in its 24th year, DARTS’ April 8 reception honored renowned Los Angeles architects Brian Tichenor and Raun Thorp, principles of Tichenor & Thorp, prior to their April 9 lecture. Mary Anna Jeppe, founder of the Decorative Arts Society How did DARTS start in Orange County? The Decorative Arts Society was originally founded in 1995 as a financial support group for New Directions for Women, whose commitment is to provide residential treatment for addicted women. We presented our First Annual Lecture Series that fall. It was a ‘sell out’ and has been very successful ever since!

How has the organization evolved? As our membership grew, in 2004 DARTS extended its giving, becoming a 501(3)(c) nonprofit and developing a Grant Committee to oversee giving grants to deserving nonprofits that provide assistance to women, children and families in Orange County.

stunning view on show, guests indulged the sunset and catering by Fork, Knife and Spoon while feting the power couple’s rich contribution to design, captured in the book Outside In: The Gardens and Houses of Tichenor & Thorp, and in the likes of Architectural Digest and Town & Country. DARTS’ Lecture Series, held at Edwards Big Newport Theatre, is bigger every year, luring not only Tichenor & Thorp but, also this season, Lea C. Lane, curatorial assistant of the Decorative Arts and Design Cincinnati Art Museum who spoke on folk art in America, and architect Gil Schafer III who gave the lecture “Creating Places to Call Home: How Tradition, Style and Memory Can Inspire Ways of Living.” Each lecture also highlights a DARTS’ grant recipient—the Environmental Nature Center on April 9. The 2019-2020 grant recipients will be announced at an upcoming luncheon this June, with invites for the 25th Lecture Series mailed late summer. Judging by past presenters, expect a lineup that will have everyone talking.

To date, DARTS has contributed over $2,400,000 to a variety of 35 charities. At the “Beautiful” gala in April 2017, featuring popular Los Angeles designer Mark D. Sikes, attendees were thrilled when Honorary Chair Julia Argyros donated $250,000 to the Decorative Arts Society. Talk about the Lecture Series. For the last 24 years, the series has featured top interior designers, well-regarded architects, landscape designers, art historians and museum curators—120 speakers to date. The program is presented at the Big Newport Theatre in Fashion Island, in October, November, February, March and April. Who are some of the speakers for 2019-2020? With renowned interior designer Timothy Corrigan as lead speaker, this will be another fabulous year, including interior designer Madeline Stuart, landscape designer Kathryn Herman, and more. decorativeartssociety.net
