Dear class of 2029,
Welcome to Mounds View High School! We are happy to have you here. These first few days may feel overwhelming, but your teachers, staff, dean and upperclassmen are here to support you through it. This is the start of four years that will be filled with many memories.
High school coursework may be harder, but with it you will grow as a person and learn to be efficient with your time. Create balance in your schedule, take classes you think you can handle, and find electives you enjoy. While grades are important, don’t base your self-worth on them. Chasing the “A” can become stressful when you start taking more difficult classes.
Mounds View has plenty of activities available. Find at least one you take interest in and try it out. These are great ways to not only do what you like, but to meet new people. Through these four years, your friendships and friend groups may change, but sometimes change is good. The people around you should support and respect you, and you should do the same. Stay out of conflicts, and avoid self-destructive activities.
Above all, have fun! Live these next four years to your fullest and know that they will pass quicker than you expect them to. We wish you the best of luck in your first year and all years that follow!

“I would advise incoming freshmen to use their resources as much as possible. This includes making sure they have a planner (outside of their phone) to keep due dates organized, let their teachers know when they are struggling and need help and review course resources often. However, it is most important that they do not let technology or others think for them. They should spend the next four years learning how to think critically and problem solve while taking ownership for their learning; this can’t happen if they don’t practice these skills. Finally, everything can feel overwhelming at first, but I promise it will be okay.”
-Ashley Walter, English teacher
“Welcome to Mounds View! The great thing about being in a new school is the ability to reinvent yourself and shake up who you are! Get involved in a club, activity or sport; especially if it's something different than you've tried before. You're probably going to have more assignments and homework here than in middle school, so make sure you're organized about your schoolwork and responsibilities so you have time set aside for rest, relaxation and fun. Some things will be a struggle, and that's ok! The nice thing about dealing with struggles now is that you will learn how to overcome them and there are 100 teachers and staff here to support you and who you can reach out to for help. We're super excited to have you all here!”
-Aaron Oseland, social studies teacher
“One, find balance in your schedule! High school is a marathon, not a sprint, and your well-being matters just as much as your grades.
Two, get involved in something outside of the classroom, whether it’s a sport, music, theater, or one of the many clubs at Mounds View, joining something outside of class is one of the best ways to meet people and feel connected to the community.
Three, don’t be afraid to ask for help, your teachers are here to help you!
Four, most importantly, be kind to yourself and others. Freshman year is about learning, growing and discovering what interests you. Stay open-minded, build good habits and take things one step at a time.
Welcome to the Mustang community—you belong here!”
-Patrick Crawford, science teacher
“Be a kid, join an activity, join a club, take a load that you think is both preparing you and giving you the balance you need to just be a kid and enjoy your life ... Don’t always feel like you have to chase the A. Everybody feels like they have to have an A on everything. And a B is a really good score. It’s proficient, it’s demonstrating the grade level standard.”
-Rob Reetz, principal of Mounds View High School
