CSF sells old books (mainly SAT/AP books) that members have donated for volunteer hours and has already donated thousands of dollars in profit to a charity called Room to Read.
Outreach During the holidays, CSF has participated in events in which volunteers help give presents to underprivileged children, prepare meals at soup kitchens, and distribute free food at pantries.

Coffeehouse La Pluma始s annual Coffeehouse takes place second semester and is a fundraising event that features some of Monta Vista始s artists on campus. In 2012, the event was hosted in mid-January. The evening consists of musical acts (singing, instrumental, bands), stand up comedy, and various other artistic performances. We serve steaming hot coffee along with bagels and other baked goods. Personal Essay Writing Workshops Late first semester, La Pluma hosts essay workshops for those students applying to college, selective summer programs, or who want to prepare personal statements early on. Our advisor, Mr. David Clarke, the head of the English department and AP Literature teacher, hosts the event. This year the event is in C210, and admission is limited to around 60 people. Attendees can submit their essays beforehand for personal feedback from Mr. Clarke. At the workshop, the officer team and English teachers go over the basics of a strong personal statement, and work oneon-one with attendees to improve their personal statements.

Build is a six week period from January to February during which we design, prototype, machine, and program a robot that completes the challenge that the game prompt released. Regional Competitions The robot we build will compete at regional competitions held in March and compete with other teams first in elimination rounds in random alliances of three then in finals in alliances hand-picked by the alliance captains, the eight teams with the highest cumulated score by the end of the elimination rounds.

The Monta Vista Sierra Club: The Sierra Club is dedicated to the preservation of the environment through political and social advances. We do not pick up trash. We do not clean streams. We are a group of skilled orators, academicians, and writers who pursue the preservation of the environment by influencing the psyche of the community. Lobbying City Council Last year, we helped pass the San Jose Plastic Bag Ban. This year, we look to pass a similar resolution in Cupertino, and will lobby its city council throughout the year.

Every August, MVSD showcases each event that is offered in Monta Vista Speech and Debate, with free admission, complimentary food and extra credit from most lit teachers.
Parent Night Held between Showcase and the first tournaments, Parent Night gives parents the opportunity to meet the team advisors and captains in person, ask questions, and learn to judge events, as they may be asked to volunteer to judge at tournaments.
Tournaments throughout the year! Students can put their skills to practice in competition against other schools close to home or across the country, in the eagerly anticipated tournaments as plenty of team bonding takes place!
Speech and Debate Banquet The team comes together to celebrate a successful and satisfying year by honoring the members who will receive certificates and seals from the National Forensic League, and everyone enjoys a hearty dose of food and friends.
