Gaelscoil Mhuscraí has had an extremely busy few weeks. Táimid an-ghníomhach leis an Spóirt ar scoil. Our senior classes have been participating in football and hurling blitzes. Our athletes did the school proud at Cork Primary Sports coming away with many trophies. Maith sibh! Many classes are busy enjoying active school tours with trips to West Cork Secret, Spike Island and Ballyhass Lakes. We are participating in the Food Dudes programme and are enjoying fresh fruit and vegetables every day at am lóin. We had a great Fun Run too around Blarney!

We are delighted to welcome back the Food Dudes programme.

This programme is designed to increase children’s consumption of fruit and vegetables, and incorporates positive role models, repeated tastings and rewards.

Mr O'Brien from 1st & 2nd Class, is hosting a weekly History Club 'Step back in time’ every Tuesday at lunch time, part of our Lunchtime Learners initiative. We are examining different topics every session and will include aspects of local, national and international history. The group is open to all children from 3rd - 6th Class.

We were absolutely delighted to be back participating in the Cork City Sports. Thanks to Mrs. O'Shaughnessy for the super preparation of the children for the trials and for all of the lunchtime training. The boys came 2nd and the girls came 3rd in the relay. Well cone to Laura from 2nd class who was up against 6th class pupils, also there was 4th place for Penny in the County Final and Michael fared very well in the County Final as well.

2nd class got very creative designing a house suitable for a mouse!

Pupils of Cloghroe NS learnt new skipping skills and routines as one of our Active Schools activities this year. They showed off their talents in a whole school display, raising money for our local St. Vincent de Paul. Many thanks to our Active Schools Committee and all those involved.

Senior Infants were inspired by Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ and Sunflower paintings, creating their own beautiful art work and clay models. Learning all about the science behind growth, they planted their own sunflower.

There will be some beautiful gardens this summer!

It’s school tour season once again, with trips to Ballyhass by 3rd and 6th classes, and Fota by Senior Infants so far this year, with lots more fun and adventure to be had by the other classes in the month of June.

Our third/fourth Class had an amazing opportunity and experience when they got to travel up to UCD to present their project on 'Women in STEM’.

Our junior infants ‘kicked off’ school tour season this year with their trip to Grenagh Farm. They got to visit lots of different animals, play in an amazing playground and enjoyed a lovely picnic too!

The children in Second Class made their First Holy Communion on the 27th May, a lovely prayerful occasion. The boys and girls were excellent on the day and everyone was impressed with the way they sang all of the hymns and said their prayers so clearly. It was a very happy milestone for the children and their families.

We are so proud of the team of athletes who represented our school so well at the recent City Sports.

Both the boys and girls teams were fantastic on the day as they sprinted down the track in MTU and we had many individual winners and both teams won their divisions!

Person of The Year Awards 2022

The June Blarney & District Person of the Month is Ray Dennehy The June 2022 Blarney & District Person of the Month is Team Medic to the International Mixed Ability Rugby Tournament (IMART) Ray Dennehy.

IMART is the ‘World Cup’ for Mixed Ability rugby clubs, and is the only international event where people of all abilities play together in the same unadapted, mainstream 15-a-side game abiding

by World Rugby Laws. Following the huge success of the inaugural tournament in the UK in 2015, and the 2017 event which was held in Spain, the event moved to Cork for 2022.

Four years in the making, Ray and his colleagues at Sunday’s Well RFC fought off stiff competition from other would-be host countries, waited out a global pandemic, and spent endless hours working tirelessly with the EU, IRFU, Munster Rugby, Cork City Council, IMAS, and others in an effort to bring this event to Cork. Originally scheduled for June 2020, the event was played in Cork earlier this month.

In the region of 1000 players both with and without disabilities, from 28 teams and 14 different countries came together to play rugby under same World Rugby laws as the XV a side game with only minor adaptations such as uncontested scrums. This year’s event is made extra

special by the fact that it will host the first ever Women’s Mixed Ability Rugby tournament also.

The Mixed Ability Model encourages social inclusion by removing barriers to participation for people who feel unable to join mainstream grassroots clubs or groups due to physical or learning disabilities, mental health issues, size, shape, age, prolonged inactivity, or a perception of ‘not being good enough’. It is hoped that the IMART and MAW events in Cork this year will enhance interest, participation and interaction of people of all abilities in the sport across Ireland and beyond, and help to build new connections between grassroots clubs, educational institutions, communities and local authorities. The staging of the event in Cork marks a significant achievement for Sunday’s Well RFC, who coordinated the bid, and acknowledges the leading role which the Club now plays in championing the sport.

Ray described as ‘a man who works tirelessly off the field more so than on, often doing more than required,’ has put trojan work into the staging and running of the event, and said that he hoped 'all the participants have a good time, the ethos of mixed ability is spread far and wide and that the people of Cork give one hell of an Irish welcome!’

Congratulations to the incredible Blue Hat Theatre Group who not only enjoyed a sell out run in Whitechurch but went on to sell out in Kenmare, Donoughmore and the Everyman Palace Theatre with their wonderful performance of The Whiteheaded Boy!

It wasn’t just flowers that were blooming as our own Cór Geal performed at Bloom last week, how wonderful to see them grace the national stage! You will be able to see Cor Geal perform later this year when they take to the Opera House stage on Sunday October 23rd with their brand new concert ‘Showtime’.

Tuesday 31st May 2022 marked a milestone for educational development in Ballincollig as Cork College of Further Education and Training’s Ballincollig Centre was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Colm Kelleher. Cork ETB has had a key presence as an education provider in Ballincollig for many years, providing the Youthreach service for young people, offering alternative education supports and also Coláiste Choilm, winner of the young scientist competition on numerous occasions. Originally built in 1987 to cater for 400 pupils, it now has a student population of over 1350. Coláiste/Gaelcholáiste Choilm is in a true sense, a college for the community. Through the years it has generously placed its facilities at the disposal of many clubs and organisations, and plays host to many local, regional and national events.

The opening and further expansion of the Cork College of FET Ballincollig Centre tby Cork ETB, demonstrates the commitment to meet and provide an education for all but also to meet the fast-changing educational requirements of employers. The community of Ballincollig will have access to year-round learning options in their local Cork College of FET centre where they can share their experience with other learners. Part-time education options will be available to allow people to re-skill or up-skill and enter a new career or provide a pathway to further study in FET or HE. pics Jim Coughlan

Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts had a busy morning picking up rubbish around Ballincollig and loads of fun too completing challenges and playing games, and eating ice-cream. Some of the challenges were to find receipts and plastic bags, and take a picture in a trolley!

Sponsors, Ballincollig Credit Union, provided them with hi-vis vests and the Venture Scouts and Rover Scouts built a large bin to hold all the bin bags after the litter pick.

This month saw the coming to an end of a Blarney United team after a great 8 years representing the club. The U18A team started out in 2014 and have now finished out their involvement in both the Cork Youth League and Cork Schoolboys League. Of the 16 players who played in the last game 14 of these were involved in their very first season. Some may have taken a break for a year for other teams or sports, but returned and, with the main group, showed great commitment to training and matches during that time. Behind the Castle Walls May brought a sudden surge in growth throughout the grounds and gardens and we are surrounded by beautiful new growth, exceptional floral displays, and tonnes of weeds! It’s the same every year and we are run off our feet trying to keep everything under control. It’s worth all the hard work though, as the gardens are simply stunning right now.

The herbaceous borders are starting to flower, as are the Seven Sisters, Fairy Glade, and the Himalayan Valley. In fact, there is something new around every corner.

We are planting up all our seasonal display beds with mixed bedding and we also put up all of our hanging baskets this week.

In the beds we generally use a mix of begonias, petunias, lobelia, and geraniums. The secret to a good display is regular watering and feeding. We use phostrogen plant food every second week through the growing season. We also use the largest baskets possible as they are so prone to drying out. Here’s hoping for a good summer and fabulous displays.

The regular maintenance work of grass cutting, strimming, edging and weed control is now taking up a large portion of our available time and it really is a question of juggling jobs to try and keep things tidy. Although it is hectic, it is also the time of year when you start to see a lot of results from your winter and spring projects. Some of our new planting is developing nicely, but we need to remember to water everything we plant.

The glasshouses are looking full, and we have peaches, nectarines, apricots, grapes, strawberries, and assorted vegetables all coming along nicely. There was good bloom in our new heritage apple orchard this year, and we haven’t had many late frosts, so we are hoping to improve on last year’s crop. Our bee observatory is open and is proving extremely popular with local visitors. They can observe the bees coming and going from their hives and there are several information panels in the building. We have also added a screen which will be showing video of inside one of the hives. We produced a small amount of honey last year, and we hope to get a lot more this time around. Keep your eyes open in the shop later in the year.

Jobs for June will include sowing outdoor vegetables, pruning grape vines and pinching out tomatoes and cucumbers side shoots and start to feed with seaweed feed or similar. Spray the potatoes for blight if necessary. Keep an eye out for pests as the weather warms up. We introduce biological controls for aphids and mealybug in our glasshouses. Spray roses for blackspot and aphids or use soap suds if it is a small infestation. Plant out bedding if not already done; keep up to speed with watering both in and outside. Newly planted or potted plants are especially prone to stress from drying out.

Each Saturday at 10am (weather permitting) until September, the team from Himalaya Yoga Valley will be hosting one of the most popular outdoor summer events, Yoga in the Park, in Ballincollig Regional Park and Fitzgerald Park in Cork.

Over the last 8 years, Himalaya Yoga Valley has raised over €70,000 for Pieta House and Cork Simon Community through this weekly event, and attendance at this highly anticipated event often sees up 200 people in Fitzgerald Park and close to 100 in the Regional Park rolling out their mats for a great cause. Those wishing to attend can bring a yoga mat, water, and their donation on the day. This is a family-friendly event, classes are absolutely suitable for all levels.

This morning I performed the official opening of Park Place Technologies in Blarney Business Park and it is truly amazing to see the amount of business now present in the park. As it stands over a thousand people currently work on the campus with plans from the companies there to double that in the coming year. To support those people who work there I am actively pursuing both the railway station for Blarney which is strategically located next to the business park and more bus stops for the entrance and close to the entrance for those working there. Hopefully we will see movement on these in the next months and years.

I hope some of you got to see the IMART mixed ability rugby in Musgrave Park. It as a beautiful thing to see people of all abilities play together and all done purely for the love of sport. I was delighted to attend the finals where Sundays Well Rebels played an outstanding game. To this end and to celebrate the success of the event the Blarney Person of the Month for this month is Ray Dennehy. Well-deserved and many congratulations.

The Local Area Committee for the North West area have been meeting and sorting out some of the spending of the LAC budget. After a recent meeting 2 projects have been agreed with more to come. Traffic calming will be installed in Castleowen and the remainder of Castle Gardens will be resurfaced. There will be more decisions made over the next few weeks and I will keep people informed as this happens. This funding is available as a direct result of your LPT, without which the LAC would not have the discretionary budget to spend.

The city council have put some paths through the Inch. Wasn’t sure how I felt about it but having walked there it really works.

Over the Summer I hope we see a little improvement in the area and more people using it. Remember it now belongs to us so people can walk there, and kids can play there. Saw lots of walkers, a fisherman and was able to go down by the river.

Incredibly beautiful. There are funds now with council to come up with a suitable design for the Inch and I would ask that if you have ideas that you email me and I will pass them on. This area belongs to us all and as such your input into how its laid out is vital.

I know that some estates are organising clean ups and I am always happy to help these in any way I can. Whether its materials, a skip, or the collection of the bags after a clean up, Cork City Council is always willing to lend a hand where necessary.

Blarney Community Council held their regular monthly meeting recently with plenty of issues acted upon including; Plans are already underway for 2023 and we are hoping the St. Patrick’s Day parade will be back, bigger and better! If you have ideas or would like to be involved with this fabulous community event than please get in touch.

At your request we contacted the Council regarding Garrycloyne Cemetery and are pleased to tell you that, whilst it will be locked at night, the gates will be open all day.

The traffic plan for Blarney hasn't been formalised yet, Cllr Damian Boylan tells us that it is being worked on as part of an overall plan for Blarney and further consultation will be taking place over the coming months.

The hall is available for hire and is used by many groups currently, from meetings to badminton and everything inbetween, so please get in touch if you would like to use this space.

Finally, on the subject of speeding. Of late, the biggest issue for people is drivers speeding. Killeens, Cloghroe, Tower Road, Castleclose Road and Kerrypike are all areas where people have come asking for action. In Clogheen/Kerrypike they are organising two days of action to encourage people passing through there to slow down. Once more, I am happy to help people where I can with practical support and signage if necessary to remind people of the limits. I believe we need a societal shift like that of drink driving to change peoples behaviour but it can be done.

News from Times Past with Brian Gabriel, Blarney & District Historical Society Modest Martin: A History of a Local River “Some think it sweet to join, The deep sleep in Garrycloyne, Where the sweet Martin winds round to Blarney; But sweeter far I feel, For me and you to kneel, And prove love knows no dying Blarney” Origin The Martin begins where two streams meet in a corner of the townland of Lyradane in Grenagh parish. The name ‘Lyradane’ itself signifying ‘the fork formed by the two streams.’ One of these originates in a spring located between Lyradane Mountain and Rockhill and flows swiftly downwards. While the other, sluggish in comparison, comes in from Ballyhilloge and drains the steep-sided valley it shares with the Cork-Dublin railway line.

Liam Milner1. regarded the ‘fork’ as the beginning of the river but the ordnance survey (OS) map of 1900 extends its course by also labelling the Ballyhilloge stream ‘River Martin’. Incidentally, the early waters of the Clydagh are close to the Martin’s but that river makes its way northwards to the Blackwater while the Martin, of course, goes south to the Lee. Course Milner’s map shows us that the prevailing direction of flow for rivers in our part of mid-Cork is south – south-eastwards. For most of its course the Martin adheres to this, at times running almost directly south. But when it meets the village at the foot of the Station Road it veers south-west and, then, when it meets Blarney Castle, it shifts 90o directly westwards. Something unusual for a river in this part of Cork. Most of our roads too, incidentally, adhere to the dictates of the landscape and follow a south-east alignment. The westward flow terminates when the Martin joins the Shournagh beside Riverview Estate. The course from Lyradane to Riverview is some 11 miles long (two or three more if you include the Ballyhilloge stream) and it drains a catchment area of some 36½ square miles.

Geology Earlier in its geological history it appears the Martin didn’t make the westward turn at all but continued south-eastwards into the Inchancomain Bog (adjoining Clogheenmilcon) which was once a lake. It was the rapid lowering of Blarney’s limestone belt that caused the sharp diversion west to join the Shournagh, but signs of the probable former course still exist.

This was proposed by G.W. Lamplugh et. al.2 in a survey conducted in 1905 and it’s the bottom of the Station Road which is the key spot to bear in mind here. This is basically the exit point from a deep trench, or gorge excavated through Old Red Sandstone.

The gorge also carries the Waterloo Road and becomes narrow enough in places for road and river to compete for space. Its sides reach 60 to 80 feet in height. A fan of gravel issues from the gorge and possibly impeded drainage eastwards while a further bank of sand and gravel stretches east, past Castleview, for ¾ of a mile.

This bank forms the northern slope of what Lamplugh termed the Blarney Valley, or the Plain of Blarney. This is all the flat alluvial land stretching between Killeens and Tower and is 400 to 500 yards wide.

The Martin flows out across it from the bottom of the Station Road to the castle and then follows its southern edge westwards to Tower Bridge apart from some meandering out onto the flat at Bawnafinna where it meets the Shournagh. The prevailing south-easterly direction is resumed on rounding the Muskerry Golf Course. The Shournagh then forces passage through another deep ravine of Old Red sandstone emerging to meet the Lee at Carrigrohane. The Martin’s waters embodied within.

Names Some 10,000 years ago Mesolithic man was happy simply travelling up riverine valleys seeking fish, fowl, boar, fruit and plants for sustenance. By the Iron Age clearances had been made for farming and the landscape was more tamed. Now travelling across country with livestock meant a knowledge of fording points on rivers was important. Rivers also began to serve as boundaries as land ownership developed and, as a result, we see that they rarely run through a townland, more often forming a boundary. The Martin itself serves as a townland boundary for its entire length as well as being a parish and barony boundary for a stretch between Birch Hill and Garrycloyne.

The names of rivers are also said to be among our most ancient though the Martin’s sounds like it might be Anglo-Norman, named after a settler knight perhaps, and supplanting an earlier one now lost to us. Also, that it could tie in with an adjoining townland called Ballymartin, meaning ‘Martin’s settlement or farmstead’. But Paul MacCotter suggests that the name comes from the ‘Martine’, an old Gaelic tribal grouping. They weren’t of noble status, being subservient rent payers, but were, perhaps, of sufficient numbers, or significance, for the river to acquire its name from them.

In the Civil Survey of 1655, we find the Martin referred to as the ‘Awemarteene’. The prefix ‘Awe’ signifying ‘abhainn’ (a river) and equivalent to ‘Owen’ as in the ‘Owenagearragh’ (over at Cloghroe) which, incidentally, is also known as the Sheep River. That could have left us with the ‘Owenmartin’. The 1655 survey described the “the meares and bounds” of the parish of Garrycloyne. It said that “almost betwixt every plowland, there’s one River or Brook (and) About ye Midst of the said parish, the river call’d Awemarteen runs from ye parish Church to ye Castle of Blarny, & so westwards to Tower Bridg”. The lower end of the Shournagh it termed the ‘Awbeg’, but ‘Shurrhenagh’ further back in the glen of Cloghphilip. The compilers noted that the Awmartin and the river ‘Comaune’ joined together where Blarney Castle is seated. The Comain is now better known as the Blarney River but has also been known as the Whey. Back in 1655 “all these three Rivers Meeting together do go by ye name of the River Teavor”. That is a name lost to us now, could it have been connected with the Irish for Tower (Teamhair)? Tower was an important bridging point that far back.

Berrings NS May was an extremely busy month in Berrings National School with a spell of beautiful weather. The children made the most of this and spent a lot of time outside utilising our outdoor classroom facility.

The children of 2nd class received their First Holy Communion.

How lovely it was to gather in the school halla after the mass to mark this special and holy occasion.

The infants travelled to Rumley’s Farm on their school tour. It was a day full of fun and activity.

The Westmidlands Theatre company brought their production of Robin Hood to the school hall. The children thoroughly enjoyed this humorous theatrical production.

The end of the month ended on a high and saw the girls of Berrings National School win their Sciath na Scol County Final!

The Irish National Teacher’s Organisation recently held a retirement function for retired teachers from District 12. Our own Mr. Liam Walsh was celebrated on the night.

There was much to celebrate at the 50th anniversary celebration of Ballincollig Credit Union in the Oriel House Hotel.

What a year for Blarney United both on and off the pitch, the first normal season following on from the pandemic and it was great to get back to playing football.

Blarney United had 8 teams competing at Adult and Youth levels in the 21/22 season. Our Senior team finished 2nd in their league and gained promotion back to the MSL Senior Premier division, while squad member Martin O’Sullivan was selected to play in the UEFA Regions Cup and on the Ireland Amateur Squad who took on Ireland U20’s. Our first Junior team finished a very creditable 3rd in the MSL Junior 1st Division, had a great run in the John Hayes Trophy and made the final of the Junior Super Cup at Turners Cross. Our second Junior team also had a strong finish in their league and played in a very unique Super Cup game - Blarney United J1 v Blarney United J2. In the Cork Youth League all our teams performed very strongly in their respective leagues with our U17 Premier Team winning their league in a memorable night in Carrigaline! Three of our U18 Premier team members - Nathan Davis, Cathal McCarthy and Gavin O’Sullivan were selected to represent the Cork Youth League who won the National Youth Interleague competition.

Moving into the Schoolboys League, with 11 teams from U12-U16 and younger teams playing non-competitive games it was a very busy season! Our U16 team won the Division 1 league and also made it to the U16 Local Cup final where they performed admirably. The U14 Premier Team also made it through to the National rounds of the schoolboys FAI Cup. Daniel McAuliffe from our U12 Division 1 team was selected to play on the Cork Schoolboys League representative team in 2022. Our Schoolgirls section continues to grow at an amazing speed. We had 6 schoolgirl teams competing in the CWSSL from U11-U17 and also entered teams in the SFAI Girls National Cup at 3 levels. Season highlights include the U13 Team winning the CWSSL Plate and our U14 Team’s great run in the National Cup to get to the last 16. Former U15 Premier player Shauna Sheehan, who is now a Cork City FC squad member, represented Ireland in an U15 friendly and also played on the Irish Schools team that won the annual tournament involving Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales.

Blarney United players Amy McCarthy and Alice Murphy played on the Cork Gaynor Cup U13 team. They are also attending the FAI Centre of Excellence and are on the Cork U14 team for the U14 Gaynor Cup, currently taking place. Our own Scott Forrest is part of that coaching team, while Kim Forrest played with the Cork U13 Inter League team this season as well. The Academy also returned this season with over 320 boys and girls aged between 6 and 11 training every weekend with a very successful Soccer Sisters Easter Camp and 3 FAI Summer Soccer Schools Camps planned for this summer.

Success is not just measured on the pitch. This year saw our U18 team finish their Youth League career and of the 16 team members 14 of them have been there since the very start! Now that shows commitment to the team, game and club! Also off the pitch there was the publication of the fantastic club history book by local writer Richard Forrest 'Blarney United - A Never Say Die Outfit'. We were also invited to take part in Wellness Week in Scoil Chroi Iosa and had a fantastic time meeting all the students and teachers. A big thank you to our Club Sponsors Supervalu Tower for sponsoring well needed healthy snacks and hydration that day! Sadly this year we lost Paddy Murphy, one of our clubs founding members, may he rest in peace, and in May, many of our club members took part in the welcome return of Darkness into Light, remembering those who are never far from our thoughts.

On behalf of everyone at the club we thank all the managers, coaches, players, volunteers, sponsors and those who keep our club facilities in such great condition for their efforts this season.

Whitechurch Tennis Club were delighted with the successful Tennis Open which took place last month. They welcomed over 250 players from local tennis clubs and the wider county and enjoyed superb tennis and the best of homecooked meals by the in house ‘Gourmet Girls’.

Whitechurch Tennis Club has been steadily growing since being founded in 1986 by the late Margaret Lynch.

Starting out in the newly built Sports Hall, the club expanded with outdoor courts which were officially opened in 1996, followed by their fabulous pavilion and more courts. The club continued to expand and, due to great foresight by those involved in the original development, ground was available to the back of the clubhouse allowing for such expansion. With the help of Whitechurch & Waterloo Community Association, Cork County Council Capital Fund Scheme, the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme (SCEP) the club is now in the process of developing two new courts.

In addition to other club activities Whitechurch Tennis Club collaborated with Cork Sports Partnership to organise and fund an ‘Enjoy Tennis’ programme for children, introducing children with additional needs to the basics of tennis in a fun and supportive environment. The future of the club is bright and they look forward to an even better and bigger tournament next year with the completion of the two new courts, giving them a total of six courts.

The Blarney GAA team who unfortunately lost their Fe17 Rebel Óg Mid Division 1 League Cup Final to Charleville. The boys have been training very hard, represented their Club well, and wore the Rathpeacon jerseys for the final. They were delighted the Club sponsored the bus and refreshments on the day, and also wanted to thank their coaches for their great support.

The Junior Camogie team lost out to Youghal in the League semi final, with an early second half scores proving costly after excellent first half display.

The U12 hurlers, along with the U9 squad, had a fantastic day out in Tipperary. Both squads travelled to Cashel and Cashel King Cormac’s provided the early entertainment in two hugely entertaining games.

Two Blarney Camogie players, Clodagh Rowley from Scoil Náisiúnta Mhuire in Rathpeacon and Yasmin Abadan from Scoil Chroí Íosa played with the Cork primary games team at half time in the Munster GAA Championship Cork v Tipperary match in Semple Stadium in Thurles.
