Tá an t-Earrach buailte linn i nGaelscoil Mhuscraí. Pupils are busy with plenty of physical activity this term with Irish dancing, swimming and GAA training starting back again. We are participating in the ‘Step into Spring’ Schools walking challenge with many classes tracking their distances to earn a certificate from Cork Sports Partnership. Classes participated in a ‘Scriobh Leabhar’ project run by Cork Education Centre with the winning books published on the Foras na Gaeilge website. It was a great opportunity for pupils to practice story writing as Gaeilge. Rang 4 were busy creating some wonderful ‘bolcán’ which was a great scientific and artistic effort! Well done to all from third to sixth class those who represented the school so admirably at the Blarney Credit Union Quiz. One of our U11 teams, which included Molly, Darragh, Noah and Hannah, came joint first in the quiz but were unfortunately beaten in a tie breaker to advance to the next stage of the competition. The team were delighted to receive a prize of 'one for all vouchers’.
Well done to all of the teams that participated in the chess tournament. Our two teams, Vicarstown Grandmasters and Chess Champs, really enjoyed the day and represented the school with distinction.
Fifth and sixth class had a fantastic time at the Lifetime Lab, learning all about kinetic electricity. They made model cars, a self cleaning brush, a steady hand game and how to wire a light bulb. Afterwards they walked over the Shaky Bridge and topped the day off in Fitzgerald’s Park.
Fifth and sixth class have produced some amazing work of world landmarks made using recycled materials. To see more check out our Instagram page.

Third Class led our school St Brigid’s Day celebrations, reading all about her life and writing down her story. The children in Third and Fourth Class got some great help from local ICA members who came in to show the boys and girls how to make St Brigid’s crosses from rushes and we all enjoyed gathering in the hall for a special assembly where Fr Gabriel blessed the crosses. The beginning of Spring inspired a cleaning frenzy all around the school and pupils got stuck in to sorting out bags, boxes and baskets. The shelves were left shining and not a speck of dust was in sight once our enthusiastic cleaning crew were finished, it was an impressive feat and an exciting day! 2023 has started with many impressive achievements for the pupils and we want to congratulate out pupils who took part in the Féile Fichille (chess tournament) in Mallow, the quiz teams who had a great night in SMGS at the Credit Union Quiz and the boys and girls who took part in the indoor hurling and camogie blitzes. Some of our pupils in Rang a Trí were also awarded their Pen Licence this month. These are all wonderful achievements and we are proud of all of the boys and girls who took part, our school has been a very busy place for the last few weeks and we’re looking forward to lots of other activities and more achievements in the coming weeks.
In Science, the children in fifth and sixth class were researching renewable sources of energy. They read a case study all about Ireland’s first wind farm in Bellacorick County Mayo and found out how wind turbines work to produce electricity, using reycycled materials to make model wind turbines and putting them together to make Rathpeacon’s first mini wind farm!
First class would like to wish everyone a very Happy Valentine’s Day. They used the works of the famous artist Kandinsky as inspiration for these lovely hearts to make a fabulous, colourful display in their classroom just in time for Valentine’s Day!

Blarney & District Person of The Year Awards 2023
The January 2023 Blarney & District Person of The Year is Susan Corcoran
“Susan started attending Donoughmore Toddler Group when her beautiful children Aine and Gearoid were small. In 2017 she volunteered and began helping out before eventually taking the lead and is now the heart and soul of the group. Susan is such a super person and organises everything for the group. She books the hall, brings all the healthy prepared snacks and has different activities
planned every week. Behind the scenes, she accesses all grants, makes sure our insurance is in order and that all protocols are being strictly followed. She sources toys, introduces guest speakers, and always has the best ideas for our parties at Halloween, Easter and Christmas.
Susan also organised a series of buggy walks for people to meet and enjoy a walk in the fresh air together, arriving with ice cold juices and water, fruit and snacks, even suncream!
Susan ensures everyone is chatting and nobody is left out and a warm welcome is guaranteed to all new faces, young and old. The group is a lifeline to so many new parents who can find maternity leave quite isolating, and is a wonderful way to meet new friends and get to know neighbours.
I cannot think of anyone who deserves to be recognised more than her, we would be lost without her!”
Do you know someone who deserves a Blarney & District Person of The Month award?
The awards aim is to recognise achievement, leadership and altruism so that others may be inspired to follow. You can nominate anyone whose contribution has singled them out as deserving of recognition,be it in community, sport, business, arts, family or indeed from any sector or activity in our community. Behind the Castle Walls
I think that January is often seen as a slow month, but that is certainly not so for us here in the gardens. The month has flown by, and we have a huge list of jobs to complete before Saint Patrick’s day which is the traditional start to our tourist season. Along with the usual seasonal jobs we have a lot of housekeeping and infrastructural work to complete. This is the time that we get chance to bring in larger machinery and complete construction and maintenance jobs that would be impossible to do during the rest of the year.
We are really playing catch up right now, and the pressure is on. Saying that, it’s great to be so busy and we are excited about what we hope will be a bumper year for visitors.
There are a lot of other jobs to do over the next few weeks in preparation for spring. We have already put in our indoor early potatoes and are about to start sowing seeds including tomatoes, peppers, indoor salad crops, leeks, sweet pea and assorted bedding plants for this year’s displays. Put in shallots and garlic now if you didn’t do it in the autumn. We have just pruned our grape vines and also applied a winter wash made from sulphur, lamp oil and soap. This helps with pests and diseases. Winter pruning of fruit trees should be finished as soon as possible. Do not prune stone fruit such as plums or peaches in the winter. Leave this for spring and summer. Roses should also be pruned back soon before they come into growth.
It’s also never too early to mow the lawn if weather permits. The mild winter has meant that grass has continued growing, and we had to mow some of our lawn areas over the last week. Make sure to watch out for emerging spring bulbs though. Herbaceous plants can be moved or divided as the soil dries out and bare root plants can still be planted for the next few weeks. If you have a tree or shrub that’s in the wrong place, then now is the time to move it. Dig around it carefully and take as much root as you can then stake it in its new position until its roots take hold. The important thing is to remember to keep it watered over the dry summer months.
There’s lots to see in the grounds and gardens at the moment. Our daffodil avenue is currently stealing the show, along with the snowdrops and the emerging spring bulbs across the whole estate. Other areas particularly worthy of mention are the winter borders, camellia beds, fern garden and the idyllic lake and riverside walks. Our season ticket holders particularly enjoy the wilder areas of the estate, and there’s always a chance to spot some of our resident wildlife. We have nearly all the native Irish species present here in the grounds and gardens and it’s an absolute pleasure to share it with them. I hope to see some of you in the gardens soon.

Betty wants to help you start 2023 on the right note!
Betty Fitzgerald, founder of the wonderful Cór Geal, has worked as a freelance music teacher, accompanist, and choral director for over thirty years.
Talking to The Muskerry News she told us, “My passion in life has always been and still is to empower people through playing music and singing. People who engage in active music making are often very open-minded and love to create new things. Upon reflection, I have always strived been one for creating change in my life, both personally and professionally. I love learning, and as a mature student, I obtained both a primary degree and a masters degree. In addition to my academic learning, I undertook a journey of personal development during lockdown and worked on my own mindset. I learned that it is our limiting beliefs that prevents us from doing many of the things that we really want to do in life. That has led me to where I am now, which is into the world of entrepreneurship. I have realized that becoming an entrepreneur is the biggest personal development journey there is, as I am now faced with new challenges every day. This is both scary and exciting, but I understand that it is the state of my mind that will allow or prevent me from moving forward.
"As part of my business, I have created an online choir for women who would love to sing, but cannot be part of a regular choir. As we all know, singing in a choir has huge benefits for our physical, mental, and emotional health. Studies have shown that this is also true for the members of an online choir. This was verified by members of my choir Cór Geal, following their experience online for 18 months during lockdown. During that time, I taught them and supported them using technology. Afterwards, they reported feelings of joy, connection, and confidence. They became more resilient, took ownership of their own learning, and were ready to get back performing on the Opera House stage only 10 months after coming out of lockdown.
"My online choir is called the 'Digital Dawn Birds', and the objectives of it include developing the habit of singing regularly, allowing time for expression through singing, and appreciating and enjoying the sound of your own unique voice. The current members hail from Ireland, Scotland, Belgium, France, and the USA. In our choir, we sing for fun and connection and we are open to the new experiences. Even if someone feels they cannot sing very well and has always had a secret desire to sing, this is a safe and supportive space where they can allow themselves to sing beautiful pieces, and feel the joy of singing. I believe that by embracing technology, we can open countless new experiences for ourselves. It is all there at our fingertips. Wayne Dyer said, “The dawn bird has incredible faith as he knows the dawn is coming”. The 'Digital Dawn Birds' choir embodies this faith. It brings hope, joy, and a sense of community, so that no one need ever feel alone."
Betty would love to hear from you if you are interested in finding out more and you can email Betty at choirqueenacademy@gmail.com

The month began with an announcement of over € 1.5 million for active travel in the Northwest Ward, of that almost half a million has been set aside for active travel programs for Blarney and Kerrypike. This will revolve mostly around the design and implementation of new footpaths and cycleways. The allocation of € 450,000 for pedestrian crossings is very welcome as parts of Tower and Blarney are crying out for these. I hope we can see delivery of these over the course of the year.

Simply email nora_harrington@corkcity.ie or call 021 4924900 to register. Alternatively ask at your local Cork City Libraries branch if you, or someone you know, might benefit from this service. It's simple to sign up and its free.
As Deputy Lord Mayor it was my duty to open the book of condolences for the people of Turkey and Syria so the people of Cork could pass on their heartfelt condolences. As I write this the death toll has exceeded 30,000 people which is a hard fact to get your head around. I know that there are numerous bodies collecting aid and funds for the people affected by this issue so if you can possibly help, I am certain it would be appreciated.
The new heritage signage around the centre of Blarney village is a very beautiful and helpful addition to the area. All in all, over 30 sets of these signs will be out in place and will help guide the walkers who visit our town to all of the local facilities.
Over the last few weeks I have had people contact me about issues that are more aptly brought to the attention of the Gardai. Some have been distressing to hear so I will tell you what I told them. If you feel threatened or unsafe dial 999 or 112. Don’t waste time looking for local station numbers just do the above. These calls are logged, and the details recorded.
The Government has announced a fund to enable people to breathe new life into an old home with the Vacant Property Grant which can give you € 30,000 to refurbish a vacant home or up to € 50,000 to refurbish a derelict home. There is more information on www.gove.ie/vacancy, alternatively drop me a line and I will get the information to you. This could be an exciting opportunity for someone to put together their own unique home.
As always, if there is anything I can help you with just drop me a mail on damianboylan@live.com or call/text me on 087 2244364

A Selection of Brieflets from Blarney 1922
Deaths and Accidents
John T. Seigne died aged 76 at Greenane House, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny in January. His remains were brought to Blarney and the funeral went from the train station to the Church of Ireland on January 10th . Mr. Seigne managed the estates of Lord Ormonde, the Duchess of St. Alban’s and Lord Donoughmore. For half a century, evictions were said to be unknown on their properties and Mr. Seigne strived for the best possible relations between owners and occupiers. Such were his efforts at helping tenants to buy out their properties under the various Purchase Acts that he was known as “the selling agent”.

Thomas Richardson Murray was born in Courtbrack, March 7th 1863 and educated in the nearby national school. In 1888 he went to America, spending time in Kentucky. In 1891 he moved to Clinton, Iowa and opened an office there dealing in real estate and insurance. Around 1900 he was admitted to the bar qualifying him to practice in both Iowa and Illinois. T.R. Murray was a member of several fraternities and brotherhoods – the Moose, the Elks, the Eagles, the Knights of Columbus, the Modern Woodmen and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was described as having a happy, vivacious disposition and the possessor of no small share of wit and repartee. He left behind him three brothers, the Rev. J.A. Murray of St. Patrick’s Rectory, Clinton, Iowa (where he died), D.J. Murray, Blarney and T. Murray of Dundalk. Also, his niece, Mollie who conducted his office business.
A man named John Slattery travelling from Tralee to Cork became suddenly ill as his train neared Rathduff. Despite all that could be done for him died before Blarney was reached. His body was brought on to Cork and taken by the Corporation Ambulance to the morgue.
In loving memory of Eugene Moynihan, Coolowen, Blarney, whose first anniversary occurred on August 13 th 1922. We loved him in life, let us not forget him in death.

-nor, bootmaker, Waterloo, at an advanced age. Funeral to-morrow from Blarney at 12 o’clock via Clogheen and Wellington Bridge. (American and Australian papers please copy).
John Dwyer died in America at the age of 92. Born at Cloghroe in 1831 he experienced stirring historical events. Daniel O’Connell’s Repeal agitation was at its height during his schooldays and he was present at one of O’Connell’s famous monster meetings in Blarney in 1843. He studied medicine at Queen’s College Cork and became surgeon in charge of emigrant ships to America. He settled in the U.S. in 1861 and was appointed surgeon to the 69 th Regiment of New York. He served in the field with the Seventh and Second Army Corps and the Army of the Potomac before resigning in 1863 with malaria. He received honourable mention in General Corcoran’s report on the engagement near Suffolk, Virginia and was appointed Field Brigade Surgeon to Corcoran’s Irish Legion. Dr. Dwyer was a prominent figure at the gatherings of Irish Brigade veterans for years afterwards until they ceased on account of the death of nearly all of them. The last major one was in 1911 on the fiftieth anniversary of the departure of the 69th for Washington which was then in danger.
General Nelson A. Miles (Commanding General of the U.S. Army) paid a splendid tribute to the Irish contribution on that occasion. The battles that were fought, and in which Dwyer was present, played no small part in the saving of the Union.
While hunting with the Muskerry Fox Hounds in March, Mr. Ernest Mahony of the Mills, met with an accident. Galloping on a bawn field his horse put his leg into a hole and fell and Mr. Mahony was thrown heavily. Fortunately, Dr. Denis Long, Blarney, was also hunting and promptly came to his aid.
He found Mr. Ernest “quite unconscious” but he soon came round and was taken home. Mr. Ernest took a great interest in hunting all his life and was a great supporter of the sport.
A week later, Dr. Long was present at the Bride Valley Hunt Point-to-Point at Garryhesta and found himself even busier. Tame Fox fell causing M. Moore to break his right arm above the elbow. Tame Fox broke his back in the fall and died almost immediately. Later, Denis Ahern, an elderly farmer of Ballineadig, Farran slipped and fell heavily when leaving the viewing hill. His poll struck the ground and Dr. Long did all he could for the unfortunate man but to no avail.
The above article was compiled by Richard Forrest and forms part of a much larger item, covering all aspects of life in 1922, titled ‘Brieflets from Blarney 1922’ printed in ‘Old Blarney’ Journal No 13. Back numbers are available at lectures, or 0872153216 and at www.blarneyhistory.ie
The Blarney and District Historical Society lecture for 2nd March 2023 is titled ‘Spike Island’s Republican Prisoners 1921’. Author and Historian, Tom O’Neill, is Guest Speaker and he recounts the escapades of many prisoners from Blarney and District.

Local news from 1923 with historian Richard
Forrest
War
On February 5th 1923 Stephen Twomey from Blackpool was arrested by Free State Troops. He was considered an important capture and was spotted on a pony and trap by a Free State armoured car as it overtook a funeral procession going from Grenagh to Garrycloyne. A rifle, a revolver and a bandolier were found in his possession. The previous morning houses were searched around Monard and Rathpeacon, and two men named Downey and Sullivan were arrested in Killeens. The 7.45 am train coming from Mallow on February 7th came under gunfire near Blarney resulting in a broken window and a few bullet holes. The following morning gunfire was at an even earlier hour when Irregulars opened up on the Free State Troops stationed in the village at 5 am. The shooting emanated from three different points and was promptly answered with machine gun. There were no casualties among the Free State Troops but “groaning” was heard from the direction of the attack and blood found at the Irregulars’ position indicated one had been hit. Such Civil War occurrences were everywhere and everyday at this time. The same news mentions arrests in Bantry, Ballingeary, Passage West, Ringaskiddy and an ambush in Belgooly. While Canon Tracy’s mare, (P.P. Crookstown) was taken away along with saddle and bridle. The mare was used for parish duties. The Roscommon Herald of February 24th misidentified Republican leader “Billy” (Liam) who had come to prominence in recent weeks. Deasy, it said, was described as “a combination of Marlborough and Wellington as a commander and was a native of Blarney”. He was from near Bandon.
Business
Away from politics, the ubiqutous auctioneerin firm, Marsh & Co., had the animals and implements of a Newcastle farm for auction in situ in February: - 6 excellent young dairy cows, 5 two-year old stores, heifers and bullocks, 6 weanling calves. An aged farm mare (it’s sounding like Animal Farm). A trap, butt and car. Turnip pulper, stone roller, ploughs, a spring harrow, a tumble rake, mowing machine, turnip sower. Various tools, timber, and dairy utensils. Two heaps of farm manure and miscellaneous other items. Auction to commence at noon.
On the 23rd, the Blarney Cow Testing Association met at Waterloo. This association was flourishing nationally and raising standards and yields in dairy farming. In attendance were T. Spillane, local supervisor, J.F. Corkeran, D. McSweeney, D. Ross, J. Hallissey, B. Kelleher and J. Twomey. Despite all the the disruption in the country, Blarney Fair went ahead on February 28th.
Sport
The Ford Motor Works was six years in Cork now and a works soccer team, Fordsons, emerged in 1921 . They took Cork soccer, and even the Irish game, by storm. In February 1923 when still a non-league side, they reached the semi-finals of the national cup at Dalymount Park succumbing to Belfast team Alton United. Fate was against them that day. They were denied a clear penalty that could have made all the difference and even their journey to Dublin hadn’t been exactly relaxing. Their train came under fire for five minutes in the vicinity of Blarney. All the windows were smashed and, needless to say, everyone hit the deck. Evenso, after the match they gave Alton a rousing cheer which startled the northerners who weren’t used to such a display form opponents. Fordsons astounded Irish soccer a few years later when they beat Shamrock Rovers in the final of the FAI Cup.
The Muskerry Foxhounds met at the Hydro on February 7th. The hounds were in the “big wood” there and about to be called out when a fox was spied across the Shournagh on the hill opposite. The river was it flood making it difficult for the horses to cross and by the time the master had brought the hounds around the scent had almost gone cold. But the hounds kept to this stale line and succeeded in raising Reynard at the top of the hill where he must have lain down. The chase now began with the hounds running hard after him through Loughane, on by Lisnaraha to Dawstown. There he turned right and ran parallel to the road to Killowen where he crossed and recrossed. On in to Boulapatrick and Knocknacorbally for this straight running fox till he turned fo Knocknasuff and crossed by the pond back into Killowen. The pace now slackened and took the hounds back through Dawstown and Loughane. There the retracing finished and and Newcastle was left to the right as the hunt went through Knocknalyre making for Garrycloyne. But leaving this also on the right, their quarry crossed the river with the hounds in view and went to ground in a drain by the railway track. “It was hard luck, the hounds deserved their fox, as they had hunted beautifully for 2 ½ hours, and must have covered 16 miles”.
Deaths
William Hayden. February 15th 1923. Late of Ardcullen View, Magazine Road. Burial at Garrycloyne. William Hayden was well-known and well-respected as the G.S. & W.R. Stationmaster at Blarney. He was 85. The funeral was large and his popularity was testified to in an eloquent manner. William was a native of Carlow and father of the Father Augustine O.S.F.C. (Franciscan) and Professor Mary Hayden M.A.

Waterloo Gardens
I decided to go for a ramble one day To Waterloo Gardens,I did stray. A rainbow of colours came into sight Such a beautiful valley to my delight.
Daffodils, primroses and foxglove too And my favourite, bluebells, Growing for all to see, Mother Nature’s Garden in all it’s glory.
Then I heard her orchestra As it sang so sweet.
The robin, wren and blackbird They thrilled my heart, with every beat.
Golden memories of my boyhood days Came flooding back to me. As I saw the River Martin
Where I caught trout in this magical valley.
Next I saw a wonderful sight. A Kingfisher flew right past. Its wonderful colours I hardly saw, As it flew so fast.
The Heron soon came into view Waiting for his dinner. But as soon as a fish will pass There will only be one winner.
Rambling in the gardens I came upon the lake. But who should I meet there, But a duck and a drake.
Showing off their new family With oh so much pride. Surely if the fox comes They will all have to hide.
Next I came to God’s house With the big tower nearby. It seems to go on forever And almost reach the sky.
I said a prayer and thanked God For a wonderful day. And I promised to come back soon As I can, come what may.
Thanks to the people for Waterloo Gardens
It’s a magical place to visit. Everyone should go there As no one should miss it.
Thanks to William Walsh for his wonderful poem about his favourite place to walk. As Willie said, “This is a thank you from me to all the people of Blarney and Waterloo for developing the beautiful valley where I have so many wonderful memories of spending so many days of my youth. Now going back there as an OAP I love it even more.”

U16 SFAI National Trophy Blarney Utd 3 - 4 Ballyhaise Celtic
A superb match which ended in heartbreak when, with a minute left on the clock, a Ballyhaise corner found the Blarney net. This combination of U15 and U17 squads gave 100%, the game had everything, end to end football, drama, loads of goals, penalties, and penalty saves, and a kick of a ball in the dying seconds shattered the dream. Everyone wanted success for our players but we can learn from this experience and bring those learnings to the next games. The coaches were proud to be part of this U16 SFAI Cup/Trophy campaign journey and, hopefully, we will be back doing the same again.
