The August edition of The Muskerry News, incorporating The North City News, will be published on Thursday August 2nd and closing date for submissions is Thursday July 27th.

Isn’t this a gorgeous story with not just one, but two charities benefitting from the kindness of these lovely two local ladies.

Dian Horgan from Killard was the successful bidder to purchase the painting donated by Anne Gabriel, YAA Art Studio, to Pieta House, as part of Darkness into Light Blarney. With the funds going directly to Pieta House, Dian in turn is donating the painting to Marymount Hospice in thanks to the staff that cared for her mother during her final days.

As Anne told us, “I’m very honoured that my painting may give a moments peace to those in need of support. So all in all there’s two charities benefiting from the sale of the painting.”

Dear Editor, An appeal from Australia to the people of the Blarney district. I write again from the Antipodes to congratulate the Blarney and District Historical Society on the recent launch of their excellent new journal, Old Blarney No.11, May 2018. Its six principal articles, written by Brian Gabriel, Jacqueline Manley, Chris Synnott, Richard Forrest, John Cunningham and John Mulcahy, mark a fine addition to the record of Blarney’s past and present.

Mr Mulcahy’s study of Blarney District deaths in World War 1 in his article “Killed in the Great War”, the first-ever such listing, is the result of his research over many years. In his editorial for the journal, he writes: “As the centenary of the ending of that bloodiest of conflicts approaches, it is right that their memory be restored and their sacrifice commemorated.”

This particular article gives you, its readers, the people of Blarney, a challenge to take the honouring of these men and their families from the past into the future through your action now in the present year of memory, 2018. It is time for you to prepare, in collaboration with John Mulcahy, a public monument to record that list of names. As an appropriate 21st century memorial, it could be a new structure in Blarney Square, perhaps designed by some students from your school. It could be a permanent, visual biographical record of name, service and family, displayed in the Blarney Library, that turns a single page for each name, on paper or as a powerpoint, a day at a time.

I look forward to hearing that the Blarney People of 2018, whether historians, descendant families or Blarney’s school students, are taking immediate steps to perpetuate this commemoration.

Afternoon Tea anyone?

A grateful Mum from Blarney is organising a family-friendly Afternoon Tea event at Vienna Woods Country House Hotel, Glanmire, on Sunday 15th July from 2pm - 5pm in aid of the Neo Natal Unit at Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH).

Karen O’Brien Halpin gave birth to twins at 23 weeks. Sadly, her son Bren passed away after just 10 days but her ‘warrior princess’

Elsie, survived and is thriving, thanks to the phenomenal work by the Neo Natal Unit. The event ‘High Tea with Elsie and Friends’ is being organised to raise much needed funds for the Neo-Natal Unit, which is a registered charity. Moms, dads, kids, family and friends are all welcome.

Guests on the day will enjoy a delicious Afternoon Tea of sweet and savoury treats with prosecco and hear from sleep expert Lucy Wolfe who will offer up some useful tips! There will be hair and makeup tips with Parlour 21 and of course plenty to entertain the little ones with baby, toddler and child friendly games, including Baby Sensory, Solid Start, mini-musicians and bounce box entertainment, face painting and more. A raffle will round off the afternoon in style with a chance to win great prizes and support such a fantastic cause!

Tickets are priced at €30 for adults for afternoon tea with prosecco, €6 for Children who will enjoy sausages or nuggets, chips and a 99 ice-cream! Babies/toddlers are free to attend and can avail of a complimentary baby bowl if required.

One of the big success stories in Blarney, and due to celebrate their 50th anniversary in two years, has to be Blarney Scouts who offered an open invitation one night last month for everyone to come along and enjoy sausages and s’mores!

And turn up they did, as it was standing room only at Blarney Scout Hall where thanks were paid to local businesses for their support, with The Castle Hotel and O’Leary’s SuperValu and Centra, being awarded plaques to acknowledge their ongoing generosity.

All sections from Beavers up to Rovers and leaders of each section were present on the night, and photographs of some of the many adventures covered the walls of the scout hall Despite the commitment of the volunteer leaders, there is a waiting list of more than 60 in certain age groups and new leaders, who will receive all necessary training and back up, are urgently needed.

Youngstars Music School The room was hardly big enough to contain the talent when the musical youngsters of Blarney took to the stage at the Youngstars Music School end of year concert at The Castle Hotel.

Youngstars, run by talented professional musician Anna Mitchell, is based in Gaelscoil Mhuscraí and has over 100 students studying and learning various different types of instruments including the piano and guitar, and attending music classes.

Minding your money with Anthony Forde - Blarney Credit Union

PCP Finance (Personal Contract Plan from the garage) There’s a lot to be said for simplicity. For having a full understanding of the situation at hand. For not being confused or worrying about the small print or the hidden details. Take buying a car. It used to be easy.

You decide which car you want to buy, you find out the cost of buying it, perhaps the trade in value for your own car and then work out if or how much you need to borrow to pay for it. Simple!

Personal Contract Plans (PCP) For anyone who has tried to finance a car purchase in recent times, the process can be far removed from this. One emerging trend in car finance is the introduction of Personal Contract Plans (PCPs).

Essentially a PCP is a lease scheme which makes financing a new car seem affordable for lots of us with low monthly repayments.

PCP Initial deposit (between 10% and 30%) Provider guarantees a minimum future value (MGFV) Limit on mileage Final Payment (i.e. Balloon Payment or MGFV) You don’t own the car, the car has to be handed back after the term of the PCP (typically 3 years) or pay the Final Payment to keep the car. PCP was created for one purpose, to help car makers sell you a car today and to more or less guarantee that in three years you’ll be back for another. Eyes open, please everyone – and read the fine print.

When comparing finance options, take the time to compare the total amount payable on a (credit union) car loan (cost of credit) with the PCP cost (the deposit, plus monthly repayments and final payment) the real cost of PCP finance is at the end of the term when you could lose thousands of euros on the value of the car. Make sure you also compare the terms and conditions of each option.

An issue with a PCP is that it can restrict what you do with the car during the term. If you’ve taken out a credit union loan, then the car is yours to do with as you please. Drive as many miles as you please and crucially, sell it if you need to.

The way a PCP is structured can set up a situation where the easiest and simplest option is to roll over into a new car and a new plan.

PCP’s are, in effect, a way of trying to ensure that you will come back and buy another car from the same dealer or manufacturer. All well and good, but what if you don’t like the brand of car or range they have to offer anymore? It does seem a little like saving money in the short term by spending more over a longer period. If you already took out PCP finance on a car and are approaching the balloon payment, you can get a loan to clear the Balloon payment and keep the car.

So in conclusion ... Read all the small print and be fully aware before you sign on the dotted line. Talk to us first, if you’re thinking of changing your car (new or secondhand), not only will you be driving in style but you will also be helping your community by supporting your local financial co-operative (Credit Union).

Olympic athlete visits Scoil Mhuire It’s not every day you have an Olympic athlete in your school but Thursday June 21st was one of those special days to remember in Scoil Mhuire when Olympic athlete and current World Rowing silver medallist Sanita Puspure came to the school to help raise their 4th Green Schools Flag. This flag was for travel and for reducing their carbon footprint to help tackle climate change.

The day’s celebrations began with some of the pupils demonstrating their scooter and bicycle skills that they had learnt during their cycle safety course, Sanita was then serenaded by the whole school performing a medley of songs. Following this, two pupils who are members of the Green School Committee spoke about the work involved in earning the 4th Green flag and the importance of finding alternative methods of travel.

Sanita spoke to the pupils about the importance of being up on your feet and remaining active and even gave them a few tips on how to improve their rowing skills, before fourth class pupil and Sanita’s daughter, Daniela, added to this very special occasion by presenting her mum with a bouquet of flowers.

Then came the main event, the raising of the flag which is now flying proudly outside Scoil Mhuire before the arrival of the ice cream van, with some of the 6th class girls pouring their own ice cream cones!

The June Blarney & District Person of the Month is Emily Coleman and has represented Ireland at a number of competitions in the UK. However, this has been overshadowed by her most recent achievement when she represented Munster at the Special Olympic Ireland Games held in Dublin in last month, and came home a triple Olympian!

Following the Special Olympics, Emily came home with an incredible three medals, being awarded a gold medal for her excellent floor work, a silver medal for the uneven bars and a bronze for the high beam.

Emily, along with all the other athletes who won a gold medal, will now go into an open draw to represent Ireland in the World Games which will be held in Abu Dhabi in March 2019.”

I would like to nominate the amazing Emily Coleman as Blarney Person of the Month. Emily is just an amazing, determined young lady and I believe her recent success in the Special Olympics deserves acknowledgement.

“Emily was born on April 20th 2002 with Down Syndrome. From the very beginning, she was a little fighter, and was born with three cardiac defects necessitating open heart surgery at 4 months.

Emily went to mainstream primary school in Scoil Chroi Iosa in Blarney where they were very adaptive to her needs, before moving on to secondary school in Scoil Bernadette Montenotte, where she has just completed her junior certificate.

Emily just loves to dance! She began dancing at the age of 3 with the Wolfe Stage School and continues to be part of their teenage class.

Emily is no stranger to the stage and has performed in The Everyman and Cork Opera house on many occasions, and she also loves to play the piano, passing three examinations with distinction.

If you have never met Emily but feel she looks looks familiar, it may be because she had an early introduction to being a model for photo shoots, primarily for the annual cycle event Tour de Munster.

Congratulations were given to Donoughmore Macra who were awarded Muskerry Club of the Year and also picked up best scrapbook award on the night.

It is with heavy hearts and deep regret that we say a fond farewell to one of Scoil Chroí Íosa‘s most talented teachers Finola Crowley. In her thirteen years in Scoil an Chroí ro Naofa and most recently Scoil Chroí Íosa, she has inspired and mentored many a young teacher in the school. She first came to Blarney thirteen years ago and her genuine approach and gentle and kind disposition were her immediate hallmarks. In this time her contribution to the school has been truly exceptional and she will be sorely missed by staff and children alike.

Her rapport with staff, parents and children has been exemplary. She has always embraced innovation in teaching and has incorporated hard work and learning through fun as the main ethos of her classroom. She always welcomed new and exciting ideas and projects such as introducing the pupils to the ukulele, golden time, exciting projects, cosy corners for reading, mental health awareness, buddy teaching .... the list goes on. We are so sorry to see her leave but we absolutely know that nothing but success awaits in her new school. Those pupils sure are one lucky bunch! Thank you for your years in Blarney, Finola. You are a rare talent and will be missed. Your passion for teaching and the energy you brought to Scoil Chroí Íosa was inspirational. In your unique and unassuming way, you brought such positivity to the classroom and the staffroom, that Scoil Chroí Íosa will never forget you.

The Restaurant Aistear theme was brought to life recently for Scoil Chroí Íosa’s Junior Infants as they enjoyed 5 star treatment at the Castle Hotel. They had the privilege of a tour behind the scenes in the kitchens, where they saw hot plates, ovens, sinks for different uses, and even got to go inside the huge fridge. Next they sat politely at tables like real customers and were treated to juice and pancakes. The tour finished with a fascinating demonstration by Mozzam, who showed the children lots of different ways to fold napkins. Sincere thanks to Ian, Una, Mozzam and all the staff for a fabulous morning!

Blarney Brownies visit Spike Island Blarney Brownies went to Spike Island recently as part of work on their Heritage Badge and enjoyed a most interesting day out.

From the boat trip over, to learning all about the people who lived on Spike Island and those who were sent there, they also found time to complete a fun orienteering activity, They were offered a bed if they wanted to stay but surprisingly no one did!

Love is like a butterfly What a wonderful day it was last Saturday at Hydro Farm Allotments when they hosted a fundraising day for 2 year old local girl Alana, who has Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare genetic skin disorder.

People came in large numbers to support this worthy cause, admire the beautiful and colourful allotments, chat to the gardeners, enjoy the BBQ, and visit the stalls.

Margaret Griffin gave a fascinating Moon Gardening demonstration, and an historical power point presentation of the Hydro Farm and district by Tim O’Brien was enjoyed by all.

Donoughmore will hold their 49th Annual Carnival from Thursday 19th - Sunday 22nd July.

Major events over the weekend include a Bingo Bonanza on the Thursday, a Style and Image night with Joan Cashman on the Friday and Seamus Begley & Jim Murray in concert on the Saturday night.

Sunday will see the family fun day with attractions such as Donoughmore’s Vintage Car & Tractor display, Farmers’ Market, novelty races, baby show, bungee trampolining, KickDarts and lots more! New to the carnival this year is Donoughmore’s Hidden Treasures based on John Creedon’s show, and matches, a car treasure hunt, a falconry exhibition and plenty more events will be announced on their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ DonoughmoreCarnival.

Blarney Tidy Towns volunteers come together Our rivers are cleaned, our post boxes and bins and benches painted, walls repaired, common areas strimmed and cleared, hedges cut, litter picked and weeds pulled.

A huge thank you to the many people who turned out last Saturday, including the fabulous young people from Cork Foyer project, what a difference a day makes!

Thanks also to Ian and Una at The Castle Hotel who gave all our volunteers a wonderful lunch, and The Muskerry Arms and O’Leary’s Centra for keeping us watered!

And as we were leaving to hear, “When are we doing it again?” was the icing on the cake.

News from Times Past

with Brian Gabriel, Blarney & District Historical Society

The Blarney Woollen Mills in 1881 Half an Acre of Roofing In 1881, Mahonys Blarney Woollen Mills had 127 power looms for weaving, 11,262 spindles for spinning and enough business coming in to keep them going at full operation. As many as 90 of the looms were contained in one vast room, which was “fine, airy” and “covered by half an acre of roofing”. So said a visitor, with a keen eye for detail, who was given a tour of the factory when he visited Blarney in the September of that year. Our visitor filed two reports* with the Freeman’s Journal newspaper and they provide us with a unique glimpse into the workings of the plant at that point in time. Today, the ‘Woollen Mills’ is inextricably linked with tourism and shopping, but in 1881 this truly was an industrial operation on a massive scale, one which had an all-pervading influence on the economic and social life of the locality.

Installed Power The machinery of the Blarney Tweed Manufactory, as it was also sometimes known, was capable of being powered by both steam and water. Two steam engines were working at 112 and 114 horsepower at the time of the visit but were capable of getting up to 220 and 125. There were a further three water turbines which were equal to 30 horsepower at low-water time (the drier summer months) but which could get up to 130 horsepower at high-water in the winter. These derived their impetus from a fall of 24 feet and were a supplement to the steam power. Mahonys had brought their operations from Cork to Blarney in 1824 during a time of economic recession. There they found a small mill building standing idle on the banks of the river Martin, which had been erected in about 1800 through parliamentary grants made to encourage the linen industry. Its one water wheel, which generated 14 horsepower, had long since disappeared and been replaced by the steampower potential of 345 horsepower.

Perfect Machines of Inventive Genius Two large coal-gas tanks supplied the modern plant with lighting and, all told, it had “many of the most perfect machines that inventive genius has yet devised”. One particularly expensive machine had recently arrived from Scotland and, in fact, much of the plant was quite new having been procured within the previous 18 months.

Two years earlier, the firm found itself very much cramped by a lack of space but had since obtained seven acres in the immediate vicinity, which gave it a total of ten, to spread its works over. No time was lost diverting the river and where water formerly rolled along there now stood the dyeing, washing and scouring rooms. All this expansion had raised communication problems between the different departments and this was something, “intercommunication”, which management had targeted for improvement.

The new space was needed – the firm was processing 60,000 stone of wool in a year. It was sourced principally within Ireland, but came from England and Australia as well. There were four markets held each year in London for Australian wool. When the raw material got to Cork it was sorted in “enormous rooms full of it”. Even the cleanest Irish wool proved very dirty but the Australian stuff, which was very short, was excessively so, being frequently shipped without having been washed. The whole cleaning process decreased the bulk by 3 out of every 5 pounds, meaning that for every 5 bought, just 2 pounds was yielded to the manufacturer.

Spinning and Twisting Early in the process the material was passed through willowing machines to beat out the dust. Next came the teasing machines, which mixed qualities and colours together. Two of these were of a different make and action and were used specially for the Australian wool. After teasing, the wool went to the carding machines. There were 28 of these machines for “this beautiful process” and they delivered the short wool for tweeds in 64 thick ropes.

The next stages in the process were spinning, twisting, warping, wefting and weaving before finishing. Then it goes to the dye house where £1,000 of indigo had been used in three months. Popular colour preference was not the explanation for this since all black yarns had to be dyed blue first to make the colour fast. Near the latter end of the whole process came the more sedate occupation of examining pieces of product by window light as they came over a trapeze. Any noticed defects were remedied by darning and white threads or any unseemly faults were picked out by girls with a special instrument that looked like a scissors. The fabrics were then folded in squares with alternate layers of warm tin before being pressed hydraulically.

Not the Enemy of the Labouring Class All this was being done by the 730 people employed by the firm in September 1881. This was a massive increase of 130 on the previous May and a sure sign

of the flourishing state of things. Also, according to our visitor, an indication that machinery need not necessarily be considered the enemy of the manual labouring class. In fact, throughout his review, he rings the praises of machinery for bringing about an age superior to what were sentimentally and erroneously called the “good old times”. Yet this flourishing state of business brought other problems to the firm besides the relatively straightforward and practical one of intercommunication. Blarney was an oasis of industrial society, but it was surrounded by an older agricultural world. This world displayed “an aversion entertained by even the poorest class of farmers against the manufacturing industry as an employment for their daughters”. They seemed, according to the visitor, to look down with a mistaken disdain upon mill work. Of the 730 employees, only “two or three” were farmers daughters and surely, he thought, it would be better for the poor and struggling farmer to send his daughter to a well-managed factory than to leave her at home in “idleness”. No doubt many a farmer’s daughter in the Blarney district would have disagreed with him about the “idleness”.

Good Looks to a Striking Degree The great majority of the employees, then, were women (several of them married) and girls but there were also boys engaged at the mule-spinning and other operations. A great tidiness was noted among them, greater than he had observed in other countries. They all seemed healthy also, but “of course they are living in a country wherein, it seemed to me, the feminine portion of the population possess good and healthy looks to a striking degree”. It can have been no mean feat to maintain these when each work day stretched from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Payment was by piece work and a year’s wages for the firm amounted to a staggering £18,700 or £360 per week. In 1830, they had not exceeded £15 per week with 11 shillings being the highest paid to any one individual.

Maintaining Motivation To maintain worker motivation, the Mahonys had devised an incentive scheme or, to use language closer to the time, they offered prizes and premiums. To this end, the half-yearly earnings of each employee were totalled from which all fines for such infringements as being late were first of all trebled and then deducted. The prizes were then awarded upon the balance, the person who had earned the highest amount getting a top prize of 10 shillings and so on by a percentage scale, everyone who had earned up to a certain amount getting some prize. When asked why the fines were trebled, our visitor found he got no clear and satisfactory answer.

Despite the coyness of country families, there should, in theory, have been no scarcity of workers with so many willing hands available from Cork city.

There were, in fact, several machines lying idle in the factory solely owing to the want of hands to work them. Some of the new looms had yet to weave a thread. The labour force difficulties the firm was experiencing actually had more to do with a shortage of accommodation. This was still a time when buses or bicycles were not yet conveniently available and the engines of the Muskerry light railway would not be spotted chugging along until 1888.

As of 1881, some girls from the city, who did work at the mill and had no accommodation in Blarney, walked out each morning to be at work for 6 a.m.

They walked the return journey in the evening, naturally, and our visitor hoped that “the same strict rules of fining” were “not enforced against them”.

Shipping Wool to Liverpool Another problem that the mill was experiencing, despite its flourishing state, was with transport, Mahonys were purchasing wool in Ireland but finding it cheaper to ship it from Dublin to Liverpool and on to Cork than to send in direct by rail from Dublin. The Great Southern & Western Railway (G.S. & W.R.) had been charging as much as 50 shillings a ton, although that was now reduced to 30 shillings. “Ah, if we had to depend upon our Irish railways” said one of the Misters Mahony, “we should have to leave the tweed and cloth trade to the Scotch”. It had taken four years of wrangling before the G.S. & W.R. consented to giving the firm a siding at Blarney station. It was surely erring on the side of caution to its own detriment (“committing suicide of their own interest”). The railway could, in fact, have benefited by taking the opposite approach and actually laying a line from the station to the factory.

A Kerry Man Trades in Bermuda The Mahonys were especially proactive when it came to Trade Exhibitions and were continually preparing for upcoming events of that nature. The great Philadelphia Centennial of 1876 had produced one unusual spin-off - a Kerry man, who had long since emigrated to Bermuda and gone into business there, became a large and constant wholesale customer. Further exhibitions in Melbourne and Paris also generated trade - the firm was now exporting to the Cape of Good Hope, and when Marshal Patrice de Mac-Mahon had expressed his admiration of one sample of cloth in particular, the Messrs Mahony wasted little time in presenting him with a suit from the same fabric.

The former French President (1875 to 1879) returned the compliment by sending a handsomely framed picture of him-self on horseback surrounded by his staff. To add compliment to compliment, the firm renamed the pattern “Marshal cloth” and duly went on to sell several miles of it.

All were carefully manufactured by the firm’s hard-working employees in Blarney around 1881.

Blarney Castle to host Irish Draught Horse Society 31st National Show The Irish Draught Horse Society is delighted to announce that it will be holding the 31st National Show at Blarney Castle on Saturday, 28th July commencing at 10am sharp.

It is the first time Blarney Castle has hosted any equestrian event since holding the widely acclaimed and massively popular 2* International Horse Trials in 2002.

The Irish Draught Horse Society was founded in 1975, and, ironically, the first meeting was held in County Cork, the home of Mrs. Mary Joyce Quinlan, a vet. She saw that one of Ireland’s two major native breeds, the other being the Connemara, were disappearing fast and set about trying to preserve them. There were only 400 in Ireland at the time.

It is wonderful that the Irish Draught, which is one of Ireland’s most famous heritage breeds will be having the show at one of Ireland’s most famous heritage sites.

This show is being generously sponsored by many of the suppliers to Blarney Castle Estate, as well as some enthusiasts, and the prize money this year is much larger than in previous years.

The Premium Mare Class for purebred Irish Draughts, sponsored by Horse Sport Ireland, carries a total of €2,500, and the top 20 mares will be awarded €150 each and a sash.

The Mare of the Future has a prize fund of €1,000, there will also be ridden and young handler classes and age related showing classes.

Sun shines brightly on the work of Ballincollig Tidy Towns volunteers With the continuing fine weather last Sunday saw twenty five volunteers out for the weekly hour litter pick. Seventeen bags were collected four of which consisted of recyclable materials.

Taking advantage of the beautiful sunshine the volunteers sat al fresco for their weekly cuppa at the Oriel House Hotel.

A number of volunteers carried out several litter picks during the week. This is necessary because of birds pulling rubbish out of bins or people dropping rubbish on the street this makes the place look unsightly.

The workload has increased dramatically due to the exceptionally hot weather and the usual two work evenings have increased to the volunteers out every evening. Over fifty volunteers put in over seventy hours work on various projects. From caring for the summer flowers and watering them as well as watering all the existing beds to watering and deadheading all baskets as well. Our Water Harvesting of over 12,000 litres of water from Scoil Barras roof has been our main source of water for watering and all the planters have reservoirs which reduces the amount of water used.

If it wasn’t for the kindness of John O’Donovan of O’Donovan Agri Services offering the use of a watering unit to add to our own unit, we would be under pressure to be able to cover all the watering.

A shout out to The Oriel House Hotel for their kind gesture having the volunteers join them for an ice cream and homemade lemonade prior to their work evening during the week.

Vicarstown National School

As we come to the end of another year, I’d like to take a few moments to reflection what has been a busy year and look forward to the coming year. On behalf of the Board of Management, I’d like to thank the staff for their hard work and dedication this year. Our staff are an incredible asset that continue to strive for higher standards in all areas. I’d like to thank the Parents. Association and the parent body as a whole for their unwavering support of the school at every opportunity. I’d like to commend all the children for a great year.

They have impressed us so much through the year! This year has seen the addition of Rang Oráiste, our Junior ASD Class which has been a great addition to the school. Next year will see the addition of an Early Intervention ASD class and a Fifth mainstream class. This will mean Junior and Senior Infants will be separate classes, other classes groupings will remain the same. The school is growing and this requires careful planning and management. We will continue to seek the input of the school community and thank everyone for their input this year. I wish everyone a well deserved, relaxing and sunny summer break!

A Word from Rang Buí (Rebecca Reporting)

The Junior and Senior Infant Class have done a lot of work this year. They covered many areas in Aistear and did “Go Noodle” for exercise. Mrs. Looney’s class ate wide varieties of fruit and veg while doing Food Dudes. They did lots of singing and played instruments as well. Juniors and Seniors have done a lot of art work and so did all of the pupils from Rang Oráiste who visited the classroom often.

Mrs. Looney’s class have done brilliant work this year and she is very happy with them.

A Word from Ms Walshe, Rang Dearg

Well done to all the girls and boys in 1st and 2nd class. We had a very busy year. We had a brilliant time preparing and performing our school play, Toy’s Christmas. We also did the school proud in the Feis Maitiú competition, thanks to Ms Murray for her help with preparation. Swimming was great fun in the Blarney Golf resort with everyone improving their skills and behaving so well! The pupils of 2nd class received the sacrament of reconciliation and communion, thanks again for the parents input in the ‘Do this in Memory’ program. We really enjoyed Literacy Lift Off in term 3 through our reading and other literacy activities. I wish all the boys, girls and their families a well deserved summer break and look forward to seeing you in the new school year.

A Word From Rang Gorm (Molly reporting) Another year comes to a close … We have done a lot of things this year like Feis Maitiu and the school play. Our school play was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The music was played by our very own Mr. O’Brien. For Feis Maitiu we did two poems called One Inch Tall and The Boogy Man. For Cork City Sports we had 8 people for the run. For the girls we had Emma, Caoimhe, Bríd, Aislin and Alice.

For the boys we had Reece, Gearóid and Ronan. We also had the cross country running. In that race we had Emma, Sarah, Caoimhe, Emmet, Alice, Mark, Bríd and Aislin.

A Word From Mrs. O’Shaughnessy, Rang Glas

5th and 6th Class have had a very busy and successful year. They all worked very hard and are now ready to for the next challenges of secondary school and 6th class. As well as this they also participated in the Discover Cork Heritage history project winning 1st prize in the senior class category. They entered Feis Maitiu and took home the cup for 1st place. It was their first time entering the Concern Primary Debating competition and they were delighted to win the County Final. Our 6th class team also won the Blarney Credit Union quiz and came 3rd in the County Final. They also participated admirably in Sciath na Scol, Cork city sports, cycling, tennis coaching and cross Country running. We wish our 6th class pupils lots of happiness and success in Secondary school.

A word from Mr O’Brien, Rang Gorm

3rd and 4th class had a very busy year this year. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was a big hit.in the Christmas Concert. The class worked hard for the Feis Maitiu competition and received a merit award. Chess was introduced and the children really thrived with it, all learning the rules, logical thought and good sportsmanship. The school garden took a while to get going with the weather this year but it flourished in recent weeks with a ‘Highly Commended’ award in the Muintir na Tíre competition. Other highlights included Football, Hurling, engineering week, Tom Crean project and the wonderful individual/group projects for the end of year. Wishing you all a lovely summer!

A Word from Rang Oráiste (Aoibhe reporting) Mrs. O’Mahony had a great first year with Rang Oráiste. They went on the school tour, they did the Christmas play, created brilliant art pieces and exercised every day. Mrs. O’Mahony and her class had an amazing tour in Supernova. They ate great food and had great fun. They also had great excitement at Ballincollig Regional Park. The students of Rang Oráiste participated in the Christmas play and had great fun and sang lovely songs. During the year, the children also did amazing art, they enjoyed Seachtain na Gaeilge, building blocks and much more. I hope all the student teachers and SNAs had a great year and hope for many more.

Family fun in the sun as Coachford Family Festival kicks off

The 10th annual Coachford Family Festival kicks off this weekend and another packed weekend of fun, family favourites and craic is being lined up by the organisers. The Coachford 5 Mile Road Race takes to the starting line on Thursday evening, July 12th at 8pm. Registration is from 6pm in the local GAA Hall. There are changing and shower facilities, Chip timing, warm up and down areas, loads of prizes and after race refreshments. This AAI approved race was voted the ‘best 5 mile road race in 2017’ by runners and it’s definitely not one to be missed. further info from Jerh O’Sullivan on 086 8329321.

On Friday July 13th the fantastic Children’s Fancy Dress Parade and Open Air Disco takes place at the GAA grounds. This was a great success last year and the organisers are expecting it to be an even better event this year if that is even possible!.

All children are invited to come along wearing a costume and ready to have some open air fun.

The parade starts at 7pm so come a little earlier.

High Nellies, pure bred doggies and great music are the stars of the show on Saturday. Owners and riders of the high Nelly bicycles are asked to gather in the GAA grounds at 5pm and everyone will take to the highways and byways at 5.30pm.

There will be prizes for the best dressed male and female cyclists and one for the best looking bike.

This is a great day out so beg borrow or even steal a High Nelly and take part in this cycle around the area. The largest Dog show in the Lee Valley area takes place at 7pm Sharp. There are loads of categories and loads of prizes. Come along and show off your pooch, pet and best pal. More info from Tadgh on 087 2426343. Music and Dancing will take place on Saturday night as the ‘Rambling Folk’ take to the stage from 8-10pm to entertain and to get everyone dancing. There are full bar facilities available.

Sunday is Funday and there are loads and loads of events taking place at the Family Festival. It kicks off from 12noon and there is something for everyone this year. Cool down in our Dunk Tank, Challenge yourself and your friends to the Cross Bar Challenge, Sheaf Tossing and Kick Darts. Come along and challenge Ireland’s Strongest Man. Bring your children to take part in the kids sports and Hurling and football blitz.

There are loads of side shows, trade stands, a farmers market, a free Irish dancing Feis, and the brilliant Egg Tossing game. There is a Tug of War display, a Model Toy Show, ice Cream vans, Tea, Coffee & cakes and so much more to see and do.

Make sure to catch the Men and Ladies Tractor Builders, This is a brilliant spectacle. The World Cup Final will be available to watch on TV if

you can tear yourself away from all the activities in the field and in the Hall. The Broomhill Vintage Club have a brilliant display planned for Sunday when they will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Morris Minor and the 50th anniversary of the Mark I Ford Escort. There will be loads of vintage and classic cars and tractors on show and this is a great opportunity to see some of the cars that you may have driven in your youth!

forward to this year’s Festival. There is so much planned and it looks like good weather is guaranteed so it’s going to be a fantastic few days for everyone. We are indebted to all our sponsors for their very generous support. Successful school year comes to an end at Cloghroe Soccer Blitz. Teachers, SNA’s and children alike had a ball on Tuesday, 19th June as they battled it out at our School Soccer Blitz. No mercy was shown by young or old!

Sports Day. Staff and children would like to sincerely thank all our wonderful parents who organised a magnificent Sports Day. Beautiful memories were created once again. Míle míle buíochas!

Harvesting our garden. Mr. Keady was a little worried that there would not be any potatoes this year as it was a very late Spring, and now the weather is very dry.

Everyone got a big surprise when they saw that the size of the harvest.

Elf Doors. One of our wonderful Mums helped our infants to make Elf Doors out of clay. After the children carved out the doors, Mrs. Williams took the doors away and put them in a kiln to dry, and then brought the doors back for the children to decorate and paint. Thank you!

Behind the Castle Walls

To say the year so far has been challenging would be a major understatement. We are currently baking in the high twenties with no sign of a let up and the entire gardens are crying out for water. There are three gardeners on full time watering duties and we are barely keeping up. am d A h wit On the plus side, it’s the best summer I can ever remember in Ireland and we have masses of visitors who are walking the entire gardens, not just visiting the castle.

The warmer overnight temperatures have made all the difference, and features like the Tropical Border, Jungle, Poison Garden and the Herbaceous Border are looking great. The rose pergola that frames the Herbaceous Border is in full bloom and is a tunnel of scent. It’s worth coming just to experience it!

Along with the watering, our other challenge this year has been keeping up with the weeds. We are very lucky to have a good number of students working with us over the summer, without which we would be simply overrun. We take a very Robinsonian approach to our management of the gardens and let nature mingle where possible, but it does require a certain level of control to maintain that semi-wild charm that looks so lovely.

For example, leaving bluebells to go to seed and wild garlic to die back gives time for other less precious species to grow, and this then requires clearing out. It keeps us pretty busy.

In the glasshouses our peaches have ripened and the nectarines, apricots and grapes are all coming along nicely. We also have a promising apple crop. as well as a good range of summer berries.

There will be plenty of ice cream and apple juice for the cafe next year!

Jobs for July will include pinching out tomatoes and cucumbers side shoots, thinning growth on our grape vines and also thinning the fruit to improve the overall crop. Ongoing watering and feeding is very important. We feed every second week with phostrogen for the ornamentals and seaweed for the vegetables.

In this dry weather you should make sure the plant has been watered prior to feeding it so that it does not take up too much too quick.

Blarney in Bloom on Sunday 15th July is promising to be another great day for the guide dogs. It is our regular Summer Garden Fair and features specialist plant nurseries from all over Ireland as well as arts and crafts and traditional farmers market style stalls. In addition, we run a range of garden talks over the course of the day from specialist speakers, as well as a fun dog show that proved very popular last year. Last year’s event raised over €36,000! I was delighted for the charity and I hope we do as well this year. The event also gives free access to the gardens so at €8 entry per adult with children under 12 free, it’s a no brainer!.

34 Muskerry News Ballincollig YMCA Step Programme are proud to show the latest addition to Ballincollig’s Sporting Wall of Fame, and it is very fitting that Liam Miller should be included on this wall during a week when it was announced that former team-mates of Liam, from his time with Manchester United and Celtic, will be joined by many of the players he shared an Ireland dressing room with for a special tribute match at Cork’s Turner’s Cross.

Ballincollig man Liam sadly passed away at the age of 36 in February following a short battle with pancreatic cancer, and this benefit match will see a Man United legends side face an IrelandCeltic selection with all the proceeds going to help Miller’s young family rebuild their lives.

Among the players confirmed to honour the 21-time capped Ireland international are United legends Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Denis Irwin, Jaap Stam, Louis Saha, Nicky Butt and Rio Ferdinand, while Roy Keane will lead the side.

The Ireland-Celtic combined selection will be managed by current Ireland boss Martin O’Neill and will see the likes of Robbie Keane, Damien Duff, Stephen Carr, Kevin Doyle, Keith Andrews, Richard Dunne, Kenny Cunningham, Kevin Kilbane and Andy Reid pull on their boots again.

The tribute match was the brainchild of a number of people who knew and worked with Miller, including Sir Alex Ferguson, Roy Keane, Man United chief executive Ed Woodward and family neighbour Michael O’Flynn.

Liam enjoyed an impressive 16-year career as a professional, first rising to prominence under O’Neill at Celtic, before joining Man United as a 24-year-old in 2004.

Dripsey Community Association were delighted with the turn out for their fundraising Table Quiz last month in Feeneys Bar, and would like to thank everyone who donated spot prizes for the raffle, Dave Murphy Quizmaster, and all who attended and donated.

With 13 tables it was a close call towards the end but The Grotto Keepers won out in the end followed closely by The 3 Amigos. Three teams came third; The Blow Ins, Not Really and The Returned Yanks, but a tie breaker saw third place go to The Blow Ins. The fundraiser went towards the purchase of a new lawnmower for the community.

He played 22 times for United during two seasons at Old Trafford before going onto play for Leeds, Sunderland, QPR and Hibernian.

He then moved to Australia in 2011 where he had spells with Perth Glory, Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City, before returning to play for Cork City in 2015 and then moving to North America, where he played for Wilmington Hammerheads until last November.

His untimely passing was met with an outpouring of grief from the football world, and was a reflection of the impact he made as a player and person at the various clubs he represented throughout his career. Tickets for the tribute match at Turner’s Cross on September 25th will go on sale via Ticketmaster shortly.

All academy players showed off their new impressive skills that they learnt through out the season and competed in friendly matches against each other.

Congratulations to Mark Coleman winning the Munster Senior Hurling Championship on Sunday 1st of July last. Three days later Mark put in a man of the match performance to help the U21 Cork hurlers win their first Munster Championship in eight years.

It has been a fantastic number of weeks for Mark and all in the club are very proud of him. We wish Mark the very best in the All Ireland series with Cork at both grades.

Fé14 Footballers win the league

Huge thanks to all who assisted to make our Cul Camp this year a great success. We had 220 boys and girls taking part over the first week in July. Alan Cadogan also popped in to give encouragement to our future stars of the game.

Well done to our U14s who won the North Cork B Football League beating Donoughmore on a score line of 8-13 to 3-7! Credit to Donoughmore for a great few games this year leaving our record at 1W-1D-1L! We might meet again in championship to decide a winner!

Club Na NÓg Our teams in Club Na NÓg have been very busy over the last month. Recently we had two U9 teams in action with 2 great games each against the Glen. The lads won 3 and drew 1. Everyone played well and got stuck in despite the heat. Well done lads.

Our under 8s had a very busy period. Starting with a Monster Hurling Blitz in Páirc Uí Caoimh, 2 teams lined out in 3 matches, and even though up against bigger numbers in most of the 6 matches, came out on top in all. Then on Sunday traveled to Cahir on route to watch Cork and their hero Mark Coleman claim backto-back Munster titles. The boys played their first game of hurling where lifting and striking was permitted, and the lads did brilliant in winning a well contested match. Our hosts Cahir put on a lovely spread of food after the match, and again Robert Scannell and the team at Cahir House Hotel looked after us on the way home from Thurles.

Congratulations to Ben Ahern who was part of the Cork West team who won the GAA Celtic Challenge after a thrilling extra time victory over South Tipperary. The final score was 2-17 to 1-19 in the All Ireland Finals, held in O’Connor Park, Tullamore.

Hard luck to our Junior footballers who were defeated in the Muskerry Junior A Championship by Kilnamartyra.

The lads had a number of impressive performances in the league and are heading in the right direction.

2018 Golf Classic Thanks to all who participated in this years golf classic. We had two great days in the Blarney Golf Resort. Every year this event is very kindly supported by many local businesses which we are most grateful. Impressive win for Minor Hurlers at Inniscarra GAA INNISCARRA 0 - 26, COURCEY ROVERS 0 - 8

Inniscarra scored an impressive victory over Courcey Rovers at Ballyanly on Monday evening in the final of the non-exam Minor Hurling League. In front of a large crowd, Inniscarra gave a first class performance with every player contributing and they conceded just two points from play. Owen McCarthy opened the scoring with his first point before good interlink play by Liam Ryan and Mark Buckley led to a 65 which Padraig Holland converted. Jack O’Sullivan then threaded a ball to Edward O’Connor who passed to Fergal O’Leary for his first point and then Padraig Holland caught a long puck out from Evin Cunningham and he set up Fergal for his second point. Liam Ryan and Mark Buckley combined to get Eddie O’Connor in for a point and then great defending by Ronan Twomey got the ball to Sean Sheehan who passed to Fergal O’Leary for his third point. A good Courceys attack was brilliantly broken up by Cillian Murphy who got the ball to Padraig Holland and he scored a long range point He followed with another point from a free after a foul on Frankie Horgan. A long clearance by Eoin O’Herlihy was picked up by Owen McCarthy and he split the posts and he repeated the feat after good work by Colin O’Leary. He then scored yet another point after a great delivery by Frankie Horgan.

Congratulations to Strand United Under 13 A team who won The Ballea Cup at a recent tournament in Carrigaline, coming out on top in a hard fought competition. After winning two games and drawing one game, they went on to beat Riverstown in the final in Shanagarry in front of a large crowd.

UTI Blarney Taekwondo Club travelled over to Valkenswaard Eindhoven recently to take part in the annual UTI training camp under the tutelage of Grand Master Karl Van Orsouw, president of the UTI Netherlands.

Two members also graded over the weekend, Junior member Luke Duggan who was promoted to 1st degree black belt and Mrs Elizabeth Murphy who was promoted to 3rd degree black belt. The Broomhill Vintage Club have a brilliant display planned for Sunday at Coachford Family Festival when they will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Morris Minor and the 50th anniversary of the Mark I Ford Escort.

There will be loads of vintage and classic cars and tractors on show and this is a great opportunity to see some of the cars that you may have driven in your youth!

Congrats to Kevin Kelly, Blarney Vintage Club, who won the Aaron O’Leary Memorial Cup with the best car of the day at the Aaron O’Leary Memorial Run 2018 last weekend.

Ballincollig Vintage Summer Show 2018 promises fun for all the family, with the Irish Kidney Association being this years beneficiaries.

The weekend event starts with a high nelly bicycle run through the village on Friday evening, followed by a vintage parade through the village on Saturday starting at 12 noon. The vintage show continues on Sunday, and don’t forget the famous ‘Ruffs’ dog show and much, much more.

So make a date in your diary, and come and meet your neighbours and friends and celebrate all things vintage at Castle West Shopping Centre, Ballincollig.
