Whitechurch Macra na Feirme who competed in the FBD National Capers Final at Eire Óg GAA Pavilion, Ovens, earlier this month.

Congratulations to talented local artist Helen Condon who became the first Irish artist to be commissioned by Ravensburger, the world's biggest jigsaw and puzzle companies, to produce a painting to be turned into a jigsaw.

Her fabulous painting of Kinsale is now a 1,000-piece puzzle on sale in shops across Ireland, the UK, Australia, and online throughout the world.

Helen, who only resumed painting as an adult seven years ago, was found by Ravensburger after they spent many months searching online for an Irish artist for this prestigious project which will expose Helen’s work worldwide.

Helen, who has featured on RTE news, local and national radio and in national newspapers since the news broke told Eoin English in the Irish Examiner, ”"I've just been so overwhelmed with congratulations and goodwill since the news broke. Several people have told me that they've ordered the jigsaw already but I just haven't gotten around to doing that myself yet," she said.

Well done to Eddie, Helen and Tadhg who raised over €3000 for Marymount Hospice with their Christmas dip and hamper draw.

Talented local artist Jessica Griffin recently launched the first episode of her comic series exploring life with Asperger’s Syndrome.

Jessica, a student at the Cork Life Centre, created the comic series, ‘One Piece Missing: On the Road’, to help people living with asperger’s and others have a greater understanding.

Asperger’s is a developmental disorder characterised by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour and interests.

A meeting with publisher Tracy Sayers of Thomond Comics at a comic convention in 2018, where Jess was selling her art, set this wonderful project in track and within a year Jess was ready to launch her own comic which will be the first issue of an ongoing series about Jess’s life and all that goes with it.

Don O’Leary, Cork Life Centre, speaking at the launch which took place in UCC said, “Jess is a talented artist, animator, illustrator and writer and also a massive comic fan.

“She is a daughter, a sister, a friend, a student preparing for Leaving Cert and a massively important part of the Cork Life Centre, an education setting that supports young people to access their education outside the mainstream system.

“Among all this Jess is a young person on the autism spectrum diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, and an advocate and role model for other young people facing some of the challenges that this can involve.”

Jessica intends that each issue will touch on different aspects of living life as someone with Asperger’s and act as a resource for anyone who is living with Asperger’s as part of their life and for anyone who will be lucky enough to meet and work with them.

Take a bow!

Ballincollig Tidy Towns would like to take this opportunity to say ‘Thank You’ to at least 99% of the local Candidates in the upcoming General Election. Ballincollig had placed a total ban on posters within certain areas of the Town. It was refreshing to see respect & restraint shown with regard to this.

Parking / No Parking In the past number of weeks the improvement in the weather has brought many visitors to our beautiful Regional Park. However, several of these visitors have been so keen to get out in the fresh air that they thought parking on the grass was a good idea.

There has been a lot of damage to grass areas and we ask that people take a few extra minutes to park in either the nearby Church or Lidl car parks instead. There have also been a number of cars parking on the grass inside the main entrance of the Regional Park resulting in damage that will take quite a while to put right.

We have also found that some verges around town have been damaged by cars parking on them, or driving across them, this is very unfortunate as all the hard work the volunteers have been doing is being undone.

Kindly take the time to park properly when in Ballincollig.

Can you spare an hour?

Every Sunday morning Ballincollig Tidy Towns volunteers gather for the weekly litter pick. The group is joined by several transition year students as part of their Gaisce programme. An hour is spent gathering litter throughout the town of Ballincollig and afterwards everyone gathers for coffee, tea and biscuits.

Throughout the year several projects are undertaken by Ballincollig Tidy Towns, we are fortunate to have many volunteers who bring their individual skills to these projects.

We are always looking for more volunteers to join us and if you have an hour to spare and would like to help us either with litter picks or on a project please contact Pat Clarke on 087 6348807.

Cork City Council Grant Scheme 2020

Cork City Council acknowledges and supports the tremendous work that is carried out by local heritage groups and organisations across the city to protect, enhance and promote the heritage of Cork City. To that end there are two grants available for heritage in the city.

The Local Heritage Community Grant Scheme is aimed at providing core funding in the form of small grants for local, community-based heritage groups and individuals who are involved in ongoing work that benefits the Heritage of Cork City. Funding of between €200 and €1000 is available per grant. Previous project funded include a winter series of archaeological lectures, training on natural heritage, exhibitions on local history, podcasts on the bridges of Cork and events such as the Coal Quay Festival and the Mother Jones Festival Local Heritage Publication Grant Scheme is aimed at supporting the publication and printing of high quality publications on local heritage topics which raise awareness and appreciation of local heritage. Funding of between €1000 and €4000 is available per publication grant. A total of up to €12,000 will be available for this grant scheme. 13 books have been supported through this grant since 2015 and include publications on topics such as St Josephs Cemetery, The contribution of Cork women during the revolutionary years, the history of the LGBT community in Cork and the history of the Fire Service in Cork to name a few The Closing Date for receipt of application forms for this grant scheme is 5pm on Friday the 14th of February 2020.

We have had a busy January in our school. In our infants classes we have been covering houses and homes in Aistear, our classrooms have been turned into construction sites! Our 3rd class girls and 4th class boys have been involved in blitzs with other local school recently, and have won every match so far, well done!!

As part of being an active school, our ‘lunchtime pals' initiative has restarted where 3rd class students lead play with our younger classes. They are a credit to the school for the example they are setting for our younger students.

As part of the Fundamental Skills programme led by the G.A.A., Holly Kavanagh in 5th class recently won an award for the whole school competition to create a new G.A.A crest.

We are very proud of our students outside achievements also, so we would like to congratulate Sophia Pinfield in 5th class who recently came third in her karate fighting competition.

Gaelscoil Mhuscraí Gaelscoil Mhuscraí has had a very busy start to 2020. We have resumed both Irish dancing lessons and GAA training as well as beginning weekly rugby training with Munster Rugby.

Our third class girls loved participating in their Indoor Camogie Blitz while our fourth class girls won theirs! Sciath na Scol training has commenced and we look forward to soon beginning swimming lessons also.

Congratulations to our three competition winners who were recently presented with their prizes for their outstanding artwork for Blarney GAA Club.

We were also very proud to welcome not one, but two, U14 All Ireland Camogie Cups to the school along with players including our All Ireland winning past pupil, Katie Kelleher!

Person of The Year Awards 2020 The January Blarney & District Person of the Month is Dinkar Lagali Dinkar Lagali, who works in Blarney Auto Centre, was involved in the rescue of three children from a house fire on Blarney Street last month and is our January 2020 person of the month.

Dinkar, talking about the the events which took place on Monastery Avenue, Blarney Street, says he “just wanted to bring the ladder, that was the only thought in my mind.” It was the same ladder that allowed Mr. Lagali and another neighbour to come to the aid of the Cork family whose house became filled with smoke after a fire just before 4am in the early hours of that morning. Mr. Lagali recalls that he was sound asleep when his daughter rushed to his room, telling him that their neighbours needed help.

“My daughter came and asked me to get up – I came out and I saw smoke coming out the windows of next door. The windows were open and smoke was coming out but I saw that the door was closed.”

Mr. Lagali lives at one side of the house that was rapidly filling with smoke,

and thankfully neighbours on the other side heard the sound of a smoke alarm and alerted emergency services. But before the fire brigade arrived, Mr. Lagali and his neighbour managed to get the three children in the house to safety.

“The windows were open and smoke was coming out but I saw that the door was closed. I didn’t know what to do, so I checked next door and they were helping from the back garden. I saw everything happening and I thought immediately, ‘I have a ladder,’ so I jumped into my garden across the fences and took my ladder and together we helped bring the people down from the house.

“It was very scary because I could see flames coming out from the kitchen and we couldn’t open the door at all. It’s scary too because with fire, you can’t control it. But everyone acted very quickly – the fire brigade, the Gardai and the ambulances were all here within minutes.”

Mr. Lagali,, who is originally from India has called Cork his home for almost 13 years, and has been a much valued member of staff at Blarney Auto Centre for over a decade.

The Chinese New Year was celebrated last month at Blarney Woollen Mill when they invited members of the Association of China Ireland Academy and the Chinese Business Association to their lighting up ceremony. Lord Mayor of Cork Dr John Sheehan and Cllr Damian Boylan officiated, much to the delight of those in attendance which included the Vice Presidents of both groups in addition to a representative of the Chinese Embassy and two Chinese tour agents.

Congratulations to the Scoil Mhuire, Ballincollig, Robotics Team 2020 who attended the VEX IQ Competition in CIT on 14th January 2020 and won the Stem Research Project award. As part of the VEX IQ competition, the children had to complete a research project. The goal this year was to is to learn more about the exciting world of science and how robotics can play a role in science, especially in data collection.

The research team decided on the research question 'how accurately do activity trackers track steps when walking, running and skipping?' The children researched the topic and created a video PowerPoint which was submitted to the VEX IQ Competition prior to the event.

There are 18 children from sixth and fifth class on the team under the guidance of teachers Orlagh Ní Lomasna and Lorna Ní Chonchúir, and the team are now through to the Regional Finals in CIT which take place on 12th February 2020.

Popular local lady Carmel Ring, a volunteer with Blarney Tidy Towns and Cork City FC, issued an emotional thank you to onlookers, gardaí, and emergency service personnel who helped her after she was caught up in a terrifying incident when her car was blown into the air and spun 180 degrees after a joyrider smashed into it.

Carmel was driving her car in Blackpool Retail Park at lunchtime one day recently when a stolen car came speeding towards her, hitting her head-on.

Carmel, told Eoin English in The Examiner that she felt lucky to be alive.

“It happened in a split second. I just saw this car come out of nowhere,” Carmel told the Examiner. “For a second, I thought I had driven out the wrong way.

Then there was an unmerciful bang and the air-bags deployed. “The impact lifted my car into the air and spun it around. It came to rest facing back the way I had come.

I was told later that some of the shopping I had in the back was sprayed all over the back seat. “I saw the car that hit me continue on, at speed, and I could see that it was being followed by a van.“I then remember a man opening the door of my car and dragging me out.

“He said he was afraid it was going to explode. The smoke was probably coming from the airbags.

“I don’t remember the detail after that but I remember a lady from Boots, Annette, who just happens to know me, came over to help me, and another lady with a young baby stayed with me, and a security man was there too.

“I knew they were talking to me but I don’t remember what they were saying.”

Gardaí and paramedics arrived promptly and Carmel was taken to Cork University Hospital where she was seen immediately.

Carmel concluded by telling the Examiner, “I am very shaken by the whole incident. I feel like I’ve been thrown around in a washing machine. I have a lot of bruises and am in pain. I have cracked ribs — but I’m alive and that’s the main thing. “I just want to thank everyone who helped me and all those who have sent messages.”

We wish Carmel the very best for a full and fast recovery and look forward to seeing her back in Blarney Castle where she is the fifth generation of her family to work.

A group of Cork based organisations are calling on the public to post or email their opinions on improving all transport & travel options (including walking) to the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport by Friday 28th February.

“If you want real change, you have to make public submissions. Change cannot happen if you do not ask.” This was a key message arising from a Public Consultation Meeting, organised by Cork City Public Participation Network and Cork’s Transport and Mobility Forum and partners, including Cork Cycling Campaign and Pedestrian Network-Cork, Cork Chamber and Healthy Ireland. The public meeting was called to discuss a consultation from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, reviewing Ireland’s public transport and active travel policy, “A New Vision for Sustainable Mobility”.

The venue was a packed Council Chambers in Cork City Hall, and there was no shortage of input and ideas. The purpose was to encourage as many people as possible to submit their opinions on all types of transport and travel.

Mobility includes every type of transport, in rural and urban areas from footpaths to cycle lanes, from buses to cars. It’s all about improving how we make our journey from A to B. Issues arising from the discussion, included affordability, accessibility, safety, streamlined planning and transport management and greater commitment to and funding for active travel (cycling and walking).

Darren Mc Adam-O'Connell from Cork City Public Participation Network, is clear that "everyones voice counts and that there is a real value to people sharing their local and personal experience and asking for the changes they would like to see, even a few lines. The important thing is to get something into the Department by email or post.”

The Cork City PPN (Public Participation Network) is a network of over 200 local community and voluntary groups, working in community development, social inclusion and environmental issues.

Mobility is a reality that impacts everyone at all ages and stages and a topic that generates a lot of conversation and sometimes divided opinion. It was also clear there are very real gains including quality of life, health and wellbeing and real issues especially the reality of an increasing population and an increased aging population, as well as the acceptance of climate change as a major challenge and significant fines where climate targets are not met.

Berrings National School The children of Berrings National School began the new school term refreshed after their Christmas break. It was a busy start that saw both the girls and boys 4th class indoor hurling teams qualify for the upcoming Sciath na Scol County Finals. Berrings Abú!

The Junior and Senior Infants took a trip to The Glucksman in UCC where they participated in a workshop centred around the theme of Children’s Rights before ending the day with a visit to Fitzgerald’s Park.

Fifth class children are partaking in a project called the ‘Big friendly guide to the European Union’ in association with UCC. Chinese New Year was celebrated in style with children making lanterns, masks and paper dragons.

News from Times Past with Brian Gabriel, Blarney & District Historical Society ARTEFACTS FROM BLARNEY AND DISTRICT IN THE NATIONAL MUSEUM, DUBLIN Among the magnificent collections of materials in our museums from the long centuries of human occupation of this island, Blarney and its environs has, in the National Museum of Ireland, at least four identifiable manufactured examples.

THE SHRINE OF ST. LACHTIN’S ARM FROM DONOUGHMORE: One of the many fine examples of metalwork/religious craftsmanship of the Middle Ages in the Museum is the Shrine of St. Lachtin’s Arm. It was designed and manufactured in the shape of a human arm with a closed fist, and dated to between 1118 and 1121 from inscriptions on the Shrine, some of which are now worn and partly illegible. It consists of a wooden core, hollowed out to receive the Saint’s Relic, which was a portion of his arm bone and which no longer survives. The wood has a covering of bronze with finely worked metal bands and strips, with inscriptions asking for prayers for the commissioners and, possibly, the craftsmen. It also contains a number of small round blue pieces of glass, imitative of gems. Its overall height is 394 mm (15.5 inches).

St. Lachtin was born in 526, was a native of Muskerry and was descended from the royal family of Conaire II, King of Ireland, in the second century. He died in 622, according to the Four Masters, and his Feast was celebrated in the Irish Church on March, 19th.

O’Floinn notes that the Crusades were responsible for bringing back relics and reliquaries from the eastern Church. One of these new types was the arm reliquary and St Lachtin's Arm is unique in that it depicts a closed fist, as opposed to a hand with fingers raised in blessing, and is closer to contemporary Byzantine than to western European examples. Other arm reliquaries are known to have existed at Lorrha, Co Tipperary, and Clonmacnoise, Co Offaly, as late as the seventeenth century. The only other extant Irish example is the fifteenth-century Shrine of St Patrick's Hand, now in the Ulster Museum, Belfast.

The people mentioned, with requests for prayers, on the Irish inscriptions appear to be Maelseachnaill O’Callaghan, chief king of the Ua Echach Mumhain, who caused the reliquary to be made and who died, according to the Annals of the Four Masters, in 1121. The second is Cormac, son of MacCarthy, next heir of Munster, who built the architectural masterpiece, Cormac’s Chapel, on the Rock of Cashel. The third is Tadhg, son of MacCarthy and brother of Cormac, while the fourth is Diarmait, son of Derisc and comharb of (possibly) Lachtin.

In Smith’s History of Cork, mention is made of a reliquary called the Arm of St. Lachteen, which was preserved in his time at Donaghmore by the Roman Catholic priest of the parish. The people used to swear on it on solemn occasions, and Smith claims that it was removed about 1700 by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Cloyne, who probably found that a superstitious abuse of it had grown up.

The author of the book, ‘The Healy Story’, claims that the O’Healy clan were the caretakers of the Shrine ‘off and on for hundreds of years’ and that it was kept in the Parish Church of Donaghmore as a holy relic. It also spent long periods in Cill Lachtin, which was the ancient name of Kilnamartra in West Muskerry, where the Saint had also built a church. He maintains that the O’Healy, guardian of the Shrine was tricked by the (Protestant?) Bishop Synge of Cloyne in the mid-1600’s into lending him the Shrine for examination. It was taken immediately to England, probably by Bishop Synge himself, and passed into the hands of Sir Anthony Fontaine (or Fountaine) of Narford Hall in Norfolk, where it remained for the next 200 years.

It was exhibited to the Society of Antiquaries in London by Sir Andrew Fountaine in 1829 and appeared in an engraving in vol vi, plate 19 of the Vetusta Monumenta, published earlier by the above Society. It was in the possession of Andrew Fountaine, Esq., of Narford Hall, near Swaffham, Norfolk in 1853 and was exhibited by a Mr. Nesbitt to a Meeting of the Archaeological Institute on May 6th, 1853 with Mr. Fountaine’s ‘obliging permission’ and then by Dr. J H Todd, as ‘a reliquary of exquisite workmanship’ to the Royal Irish Academy at its Meeting of June 13th, 1853. It had been made available to Dr. Todd through the influence of Lord Talbot de Malahide, by whom it was borrowed from the owner.

An artist, George Holmes, describing his travels from Killarney to Cork in 1797 wrote that, on approaching the end of his journey, ‘to the west, the hills of Muskery lift their dark summits, and lend their assistance to this dreary scene, conveying the appearance of a boundless rocky desert. On the borders, near the road side, is Donaghmore, the patron saint of which was named Lachteen, and some years ago, a brazen hand was kept here as a holy relick, by which the people swore upon solemn occasions, but it was removed, very properly, by the order of one of the Roman Catholic bishops of Cloyne. Passing Blarney castle, five miles brought us to Cork, fatigued to death, and happy to rest our wearied limbs’.

It is hard to find agreement between the different accounts of the Shrine’s departure from Donoughmore and by whom it was removed. However, it seems to have been taken between 1639 and 1700. Healy suggests post-1639 and that it remained with the Fountaines for 200 years. It was purchased from them in 1884 and this would indicate 1684 as the year, but 200 may be just a round figure, while Smith says about 1700. Equally, there is disagreement among the various authors as to who removed it. Smith and Holmes agree on a Catholic Bishop of Cloyne, while Healy seems to suggest a state-appointed (Protestant?) Bishop of Cloyne.

The Shrine was purchased by the British Government on the insistence of Lord Powerscourt, MP, in 1884 ‘at the moderate price, for an object of such rarity, of 410 guineas’ and presented to the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin. Whatever the fine details of its removal from Donoughmore, it made a short return for the dedication of its new Parish Church in Stuake. The original church on that site had been a thatched building until 1832 when a more permanent replacement was completed by the Rev. Cornelius Buckley. His remains are interred within the new Church, which replaced the 1832 Church, following its demolition in 1999.

The Shrine of St. Lachtin’s Arm is on display with many other artistic treasures in the National Museum and has made various trips abroad for prestigious exhibitions. The three other artefacts do not form part of the Museum’s public display at this time but are part of the Museum’s large stock of back-up research material.

The illustrated lecture for Thursday 5th March 2020 at 8 p.m. in Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál (Blarney Secondary School) is titled: ‘Irish Police Casualties - Including those of the War of Independence.’ The Dublin Metropolitan Police (DMP) was the unarmed police force of the city of Dublin from 1836 until its amalgamation with the Garda Síochána in 1925. The Guest Speaker is Mr. Jim Herlihy, Police Historian and Author, and acknowledged expert on the history of the Irish Police, highlights the circumstances of an interesting selection of the casualties of both these police forces. Everyone is welcome to attend these lectures. There is a €4 charge for non-members.

Betty Fitzgerald, musical director and founder of Cór Geal, was named as 2019 Blarney Person of the Year at the Blarney Person of the Year reception held at the Blarney Castle Hotel, whilst earlier in the night playgroup leader Ruth Hockey saw her 20 year commitment to the community acknowledged when she was inaugurated into the Blarney Hall of Fame.

Master of Ceremonies at the event were John Henchion and Cllr Damian Boylan who along with local businesswoman Kate Durrant founded the awards ten years ago.

Speaking at the awards, Kate said, “In a world that seems to thrive on negativity and finding flaw, it’s lovely to be in a room full of positivity, a room full of people who, through their actions, remind us of all that is good and right with the world.”

John Henchion said, ”We receive many nominations throughout the year and no one is voted a person of the month lightly. The awards are a way for us to show off the talents and hard work of people who work tirelessly under the cloak of invisibility, with humility and for the common good, not for any personal gain.”

Cllr Damian Boylan continued, “We consider ourselves extremely lucky to live in a village where charitable work is the rule and not the exception. The eleven people that are being honoured here tonight richly deserve their monthly award and so much more. The Blarney Person of The Year award endeavours to applaud and recognise our unsung heroes who put their community and their charitable work before themselves.”

Sixth class were wonderful ambassadors for the school at our open day on January 21st. They displayed and discussed a variety of activities that pupils partake in, while also guiding parents and prospective pupils around the school.

Fifth class took a critical look at how fashion and clothing are affecting our environment and climate.

They used iPads to research ‘Fast Fashion’ and its consequences and to look at viable alternatives when making decisions on how we shop for clothes. They presented their findings in a drama sketch, and a ‘Junk Couture’ fashion show.

Cloghroe children from 3rd to 6th class have been honing their general knowledge skills over the past few weeks and our Junior and Senior quiz teams enjoyed participating in the Blarney Credit Union quiz on Friday 31st January.

Fourth class boys partook in a non-competitive indoor hurling blitz in Bishopstown, where they played four different matches.

Vicarstown National School

Last month eight pupils from 3rd - 6th classes represented the school at this year's Regional Chess Tournament in Mallow. All students performed exceptionally well and thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

Congratulations to our masters team, 'No Pawn Intended', who finished 1st in their category and will now go on to the County final.

Special mention to Aislin, 6th class, who finished a remarkable 2nd out of 100 pupils in the individual rankings. Well done Aislin!

The pupils from 3rd - 6th classes received a very informative and enjoyable talk from VistaMilk's James Healy who gave a very detailed presentation on the process of milk production from 'soil to society' and answered any questions that the kids posed. He also demonstrated how to make homemade butter and passed around a FitBit-style tracking device used on cows to keep track of their progress and to inform various farming practices.

Five groups from the junior entrepreneur team in 5th and 6th Class pitched their ideas to the Vicarstown NS Dragon's Den team. After five excellent presentations and some grueling questions and intense deliberations from the Dragons, the winning project chosen was the 'Bee Friendly Wraps', designed and created by Niamh and Ava. The remaining teams will now join forces with this group and commence production of our whole-class product which will be on sale at our showcase day in the not too distant future. Stay tuned!

Andrew and Jennifer are to be commended for achieving the title of Active School Flag family of the week. On Saturday they went out walking the roads and picking up rubbish to make our community cleaner and on Sunday they walked and cycled in the Ballyhoura Mountains over 7km up steep hills.

As this year's VEX IQ Robotics season draws to a close, we reflect upon a fantastic learning experience for our 5th and 6th class pupils.

Following a hugely successful regional event in CIT last week, the pupils came away with the overall Robot Skills award, with the trophy proudly on display in our school trophy cabinet. Well done to all involved!

Our Active School Flag Committee are looking for volunteers to join the team and to act as yard and line leaders this year. The role has been explained by the older children on the committee this week to 2nd class to 6th class. We expect our ASF Leader bibs to arrive soon and these will be worn during break time by the yard leaders. A rota of the people who volunteer during their lunch break will be put up on the ASF notice board, there is already a committee rota up and in operation so more volunteers would be greatly welcome.

An exciting finish ended the short-mat bowls match between Westgate and Coachford at the Westgate Centre last month.

Benefiting from the new mats at Westgate, the home team raced into a significant lead in both matches, but as time and frames progressed, Coachford got to grips with the speed of the mats, and started to ‘pepper the Jack’ with wonderful shot accuracy and cover.

Match one was between Biddy Barrett, Felic Barrett, Gerard Ford, Michael Kiely representing Westgate, whilst the Coachford team consisted of Dan Cooney, Ton Stassens, Marie Kelleher, Sheila Donovan Match two was played by Nell Honohan, Pat O’Mahony, Tim Daley, Denis O’Regan for Westgate and Noreen Walsh, Ber O’Leary, Abby Collins, Margaret Lenihan for Coachford.

Plans for one of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the county are already well underway as the Ballincollig Business Association (BBA) gears up for its 11th annual parade.

The organisation committee has put a call out clubs, schools and community groups to get involved and get creative.

The theme for this year’s event is ‘Making a Difference’, which acknowledges the difference each and every one of us can make in our communities and the wider world. With so much focus on climate change, it’s worth highlighting how making small differences in our everyday lives can help save our environment. Emer Cassidy, Chairperson of the BBA said, “Every year the Ballincollig Parade Committee puts a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm into putting on a fantastic event. It’s an amazing way for groups, clubs and schools to express their creativity and come together to celebrate as a community.

“We’re hoping that this year’s theme will get people thinking about different ways they can tell their own stories about making a difference. Whether that’s using the opportunity to demonstrate how they volunteer in the community or maybe even using recycled materials for the entry, there’s plenty of scope to really bring the theme to life in different ways.”

Cassidy added, “Not only is it a great day for the town itself but surrounding areas also have the opportunity to enter the parade or even just come into town to watch and avail of the atmosphere as there are many towns that don’t have a parade. It’s important to highlight that our parade would not be possible without the support of Cork City Council, Dell EMC, Oriel House Hotel and all our other sponsors who continued contribution ensures every year is a success. Over the past few years, we’ve had upwards to 15,000 people attending the parade each year and we wouldn’t be expecting anything less this year”.

From the 27th October 2017 the Department of Social Protection has reintroduced some of the dental benefits that were withdrawn back in the crash for PRSI eligible patients.

The benefits are as follows: Free examination including routine x-rays once per calendar year.

Subsidised routine Scale & Polish costing no more than €15 once per calendar year.

A subsidy of €42 towards the cost of Periodontal (gum disease) Treatment.

The subsidy for Periodontal Treatment is instead and not as well as the subsidy for a Scale & Polish.

The distinction between a Scale & Polish and Periodontal Treatment will be determined by a measurement of 3.5mm or more of bone loss in any area of the mouth.

The cost of periodontal treatment is at the discretion of the dentist/hygienist you attend so price can vary. Shop around!

Behind the Castle Walls I’m always amazed by how fast January goes by. We seem to be barely up to full speed before it’s over and we are into February. Our biggest focus is now preparing for the coming tourist season. This is the time that we get chance to bring in larger machinery and complete construction and maintenance jobs that would be impossible to do during the rest of the year.

Recent visitors will have seen a lot of action around the grounds as we renovate paths, put in drains and services and complete construction work. We are also very busy with more garden specific projects, including the new edging in the Poison Garden and the construction of our Carnivorous Courtyard, which is now almost complete. I’m very excited to see it planted up in the spring. It will be a fantastic addition to the gardens.

One of our Yew trees, The Witch’s Yew, won the Irish Tree of the year competition last year and we are about to put up a plaque at the tree to commemorate this. This particular Yew sits above the Witch’s Kitchen in our mystical rock close gardens. You can access it via the wishing steps and in my opinion it’s worth a visit to the gardens just to see this 600-year-old veteran. It will now be going forward to compete for the title of European tree of the year. Voting is online at treeoftheyear.org. It would be great to see the public support us.

There’s some good early colour around the grounds, with drifts of snowdrops and cyclamen popping up, but our daffodil avenue is currently stealing the show. It’s planted up with over 30,000 Narcissus 'Rijnveld's Early Sensation', a classic yellow trumpet-type daffodil and one of the earliest blooming. It can tolerate cold, snowy weather and it has a long blooming period. We even had a few up in December.

There are a lot of jobs to do over the next few weeks in preparation for spring. We have already put in our indoor early potatoes and are about to start sowing seeds including tomatoes, peppers, indoor salad crops, leeks, sweet pea and assorted bedding plants for this year’s displays. Put in shallots and garlic now if you didn’t do it in the autumn. We have just pruned our grape vines and also applied a winter wash made from sulphur, lamp oil and soap. This helps with pests and diseases. Winter pruning of fruit trees should be finished as soon as possible. Do not prune stone fruit such as plums or peaches in the winter. Leave this for spring and summer.

Roses should also be pruned back soon before they come into growth.

It’s never too early to mow the lawn if weather permits, but watch out for emerging spring bulbs. Herbaceous plants can be moved or divided as the soil dries out and bare root plants can still be planted for the next few weeks. If you have a tree or shrub that’s in the wrong place, then now is the time to move it. Dig around it carefully and take as much root as you can then stake it in its new position until its roots take hold. The important thing is to remember to keep it watered over the dry summer months.

Although it’s not the best weather, there is still plenty to see in the grounds and gardens. I love walking around the lake at this time of year and watching all the birdlife. I’m looking forward to the spring, and to seeing life Specialising in dermatology renew itself all around the gardens.

There was great sorrow in Blarney last week with the news of the passing of Jerry Hurley who gave so much time to the young people of Blarney and had such an impact on both his own community and the soccer community. A true gentleman, Jerry will be sadly missed by many.

Tributes came in from Blarney United who posted, ‘Great sadness to hear the passing of our friend Jerry ‘The Ref’ Hurley. For as long as we can remember he was always available to ref a match or was over in O’Shea Park watching a game. Our condolences to his family. A gentleman who will be missed by all.’

Cork Schoolboys League said, ‘The sudden passing of Jerry Hurley, one of the most respected referees in schoolboys football in Cork, has come as a shock to us all. Jerry was a legend in schoolboys football and one of life’s gentlemen. Jerry has been a referee in the CSL since 1995 and he was inducted into the Cork Schoolboys League Hall of Fame in 2017.’ There was a minutes silence at every game in the Cork Schoolboys League last weekend as a mark of respect to Jerry.

Cork Womens Soccer also paid tribute saying, ‘All involved with the C.W.S.S.L. are very sad to hear of the passing of referee Jerry Hurley.

Jerry was a great friend to our league and always willing to help out with our games. He will be sadly missed.’

Rest in peace Jerry, and thank you for all your did, and all you were to so many.

Blarney United FC The sudden passing of Jerry Hurley, one of the most respected referees in schoolboys football in Cork, has come as a shock to us all. Jerry was a legend in schoolboys football and one of lifes gentlemen.

Jerry has been a referee in the CSL since 1995 and he was inducted into the Cork Schoolboys League Hall of Fame in 2017.

Our sincere condolences are extended to his family and friends at this sad time.

Blarney United wish to acknowledge Jerry’s contribution to soccer both as a referee and a former Blarney United Club Officer.

One of the good ones...Jerry will be sadly missed by everyone.

Our weekly community walk on Wednesday night has gotten off to a great start. It is great to see so many people turning up each week, for one hour, to get some fresh air, a bit of exercise and a catch up with friends. The walk is free, and is open to ALL ages. All you need is a Hi-vis vest & a comfortable pair of shoes!

For the second year in a row Christian Brothers College have reached the Dr Harty Cup decider and once again there are Blarney men aplenty to be found on the frontline.

The city school avenged last year’s final defeat to Midleton CBS in this year’s semi final by defeating the very same opponents on a score line of 2-11 to 0-16. On the day of the 2019 final, CBC lined out with seven Blarney players on the panel. This year we will have another very impressive number representing us in a major Munster Hurling Final.

Denis McSweeney, Eoin O’Neil, Eoghan Kirby, Cian Barrett, Darragh Murphy and Darragh Hurley are all members of the panel.

Everyone at the club would like to wish our lads the best of luck in the final and also in the All Ireland series of the Post Primary competition.

The final is fixed for Saturday 15 February against St Flannan’s Ennis.
