Ballincollig Scoil Eoin’s Super Six

Scoil Eoin, Ballincollig had cause for huge celebration last month when the school raised its Sixth Green Flag! Ballincollig was still rejoicing in the County Final success of their Senior Football team and the man who spearheaded their success, Team Manager, Michael O’ Brien, was the perfect choice for the guest of honour to mark the momentous occasion.

Green Flags are an international symbol of a school's environmental sustainability and are awarded to schools for their efforts in reducing waste, conserving water and energy, promoting Sustainable Travel to School, Biodiversity and Global citizenship. Scoil Eoin is one of the few schools in the country to have reached the environmental level of the sixth Green Flag, a fantastic achievement for the school! The theme of the flag was Biodiversity, which is the term used to describe the variety of life found on Earth. At school level the basic aim was to improve the grounds of the school and attract more wildlife.

The Biodiversity Action Plan to obtain the latest Green Flag was implemented over a two year period. The whole project required a great deal of time and work, but proved to be a huge success.

Principal, Bean Uí Nuanáin said, “Today is a wonderful day for our school. It is the culmination of 15 years of environmental work and it embodies the spirit of the school motto Déanann Dicheall Gaisce.” Bean Uí Nuanáin continued, “This, our 6th Green Flag is as precious to us as our first”. Great praise was also given to Mrs. Healy for her hard work and dedication in co-coordinating the Green Schools Programme with great support from all of the staff, including Gerry the Caretaker. Scoil Eoin is already making progress towards their 7th Green Flag with the theme of Global Citizenship Energy. Undoubtedly that flag will also be flying proudly over the school before long!

The Muskerry Arms 2 dart team had great success on December 1st when they won the River Lane Junior cup in Blarney Street.

There was tremendous support on the night for the Blarney outfit with a huge supporter following that roared the team to victory.

This is the Muskerry Arms 2nd team put together with a mixture of young and not so young players. They went through league, semi final and final without losing a match. 12 wins from 12 is an impressive tally. On the night they won 4-3 with the last game going to Veteran dart player Paul Shine who had nerves of steel to seal victory over the Local Bar.

Cycle against Suicide deserves your support

The Cycle against Suicide team, spearheaded by local man Mark McGloughlin, pictured prior to a recent spin off.

On 17th January 2015, a Cycle Against Suicide Spinoff Cycle is being organized by a team of community volunteers entirely for the community and local people of Cork. Centred around a 40km cycle of the surrounding Blarney area, the event will also include a spinathon, some great entertainment and music and some interesting speakers on mental health and suicide. The event is taking place at Scoil Mhuire gan Smál in Blarney and we encourage you to register to join the cycle or come down and support the spinathon.

The aim of the Cycle Against Suicide Team monthly Spinoffs is a way for the people from towns and villages all over the island of Ireland coming together with a common focus. To make a difference. To save lives. And ultimately, to fight against suicide.

Every Cycle Against Suicide event requires the joint efforts of the entire community and allows for local people to work together with a common purpose and focus. We were given an European Quality Label for our work on the eTwinning project 'Castles and History' The middle classes created an online project with five other countries in Europe, exchanging information and presentations online about our respective castles. As we live in a castle town, we thoroughly enjoyed learning about castles all over Europe. In addition to this, Gaelscoil Mhuscraí was awarded with the

The Blarney Young Sports People of The Month are the Blarney Junior B Hurlers, who started training in March of this year and showed a commitment from the start indicating that the 2014 season would not end without a trophy. Training two nights a week with manager Frank Downey, Selector Donal O’Donovan, and Connie O’Mahony coming onboard as coach, a genuine interest was shown by all with an aim to recapture the Mid Cork Championship trophy. Their first outing, away to Ballinora, was a disappointment being pipped by a point, but a victory during their next outing against Laochra Og set them on their way. A draw with Grenagh, and victories over Donoughmore, Iveleary, Ballincollig, Cloghduv

and Aghabullogue helped to develop the team and firm up the line out for their Championship debut. Regular training sessions with Denis O’Donovan (Castle Close), Brian Sheehan and the shrewd advice of Denis O’Donovan (Tweedmount) meant they were ready to contest the final against Cloughduv on October 5th, having beaten Donoughmore and Laochra Og along the way. All substitutes were used during the final to ensure that all the panel had a hand in bringing the Mid Cork Championship trophy back to Blarney with a final score of Blarney 2.11, Cloughduv 2.8.

great servant to the Club lifted the Mid Cork Championship trophy to scenes of great satisfaction and delight. St. Lachteen’s National School pupils are on the ‘write’ track!

St. Lachteen's N.S. Senior Infants pupils as part of the Aistear programme recently visited their local Post Office. The pupils got to post letters to their families, view the sorting area in the Post Office and met with the Post Office Manager Jamesie Kelleher and Mary the Post Office counter assistant, Prior to their visit to the Post Office the pupils had been busy in the classroom preparing questions to interview their local post person Eileen Looney when she paid them a special visit. The pupils were taught about the different services and savings promotions offered to children by the Post Office. The children wrote their own Santa letters and Eileen is going to ensure they are delivered immediately to the North Pole. Aistear focuses on enriching learning through interactions and learning through play. The pupils even got to make their own individual post boxes as part of the programme and received post from the Principal and other pupils.

This year the celebration took place on December 8th with Mass in St Lachteens Church Stuake at 11.30, followed by refreshments in the school hall.

Inniscarra U9 and U10 finished their season on Sunday 23rd November in Na Piarsaigh Indoor Hurling Arena. Five teams competed and all games were keenly contested in a very sporting manner with ICCR eventually coming out on top despite losing their opening game. Afterwards we had presentation of cups and medals to all players. A big thank you to Tower Shopping Centre for sponsoring this tournament as without their support we could not run such events. All players were presented with end of year awards to reflect the dedication and enthusiasm they have shown in 2014 and we hope to welcome everyone back in early 2015.

Local man Mark Joseph Barrett, who has lived in Shanakiel, Cork in the Parish of Clogheen/Kerry Pike since he came to Cork almost 30 years ago, was awarded the Benemerenti Medal last month.

Mr. Barrett is 80 years of age and is married to Mary and they have six grown-up children. In his professional life, he was a Bank Manager with AIB and is now retired. Involved in Parish life for over 25 years in many different roles, he continues to be a Minister of the Word and of the

Blarney Photography Club had a truly historic day at the Southern Area Camera Club (SACC) Print & Projected Image Competition recently. This competition, which is the SACC regional qualifying round for the IPF National Print and Projected Image Competition, awarded our local Club unprecedented success in winning no less than 8 awards including the Seamus Scullane Trophy (the SACC’s perpetual trophy for the for the best overall image) which was won by club chairman Paul Reidy with a superb Mono Portrait entitled ‘Old Wal’.

In addition the club had successes in the following categories: Advanced Projected Open: Bronze Medal for Fergal O’Callaghan, Honourable Mention for Paul Reidy.

Advanced Mono Print Open: Gold Medal for Paul Reidy, Bronze Medal for Mark Gorman.

Advanced Mono Print Theme (Seascapes): Gold Medal for Mark Gorman Intermediate Colour Print Open: Silver Medal for Ger O'Halloran.

Intermediate Mono Print Open: Honourable Mention for Iga Sasiela.

The club took 8 awards out of the 37 available (21%) and, when you consider that there are over 30 Clubs in the region covered by the SACC including some long established clubs who count among their members the very best and most experienced amateur photographers in the country, such a return constitutes a truly remarkable haul for a small and young club like Blarney's.

In addition to the above Rory O’Connor (10), Olivia Fortune (1) and Paul Danaher (2) had all their entries ‘Accepted’ which means that all these images go forward to the next stage of the competition. In total we brought some 52 images to the competition and all but 2 were accepted for the National (All Ireland) finals which will be held in February 2015. A remarkable result by any standard. Huge congratulations to all concerned.

Eucharist at the Church of the Most Precious Blood, Clogheen. In addition, he takes responsibility for organising the rota for the Ministers of Word and Eucharist, holding regular meetings with those involved.

Mr Barrett also acts as an occasional Collector at Masses in the Church, and, for a number of years assisted in counting the collection and lodging the takings in the bank. He was a member of the Parish Finance Committee from 2007 to 2013 where his experience from the banking profession was very valuable.

He was a member of the first Parish Pastoral Council in the Parish of Clogheen/Kerry Pike for 10 years from 1992 to 2002.

Mr. Barrett has a keen interest in Church music and took on the role of Choir Master in 2001, a position he holds to date. He also acts as Cantor, leading the Congregational singing at Masses when the Choir is not present. Mr. Barrett is a worthy recipient of a Pontifical Award because of his selfless dedication to the Catholic Church, particularly to the Parish of Clogheen/Kerry Pike over many years. Quiz champions!

Cloghroe N.S. participated in a science themed table quiz, which was held in U.C.C. and was organised in conjunction with the Lifetime Lab. Our quiz teams also competed in the Clogheen/Kerry Pike Parents Association quiz and emerged victorious on the night.

Congratulations to our football team who competed in the Roinn 1 final of Sciath na Scol last month. Although Cloghroe were not victorious on the day, the boys displayed great determination and skill until the final whistle.

After many weeks of training, 6th class pupils competed in a Munster Table Tennis competition in the Tennis Village. Our pupils came home with a collection of medals and really enjoyed the day!

Our partner Comenius schools recently visited Cloghroe N.S. Their visit included a whole school assembly,learning G.A.A. skills, a science fair and many class visits. It was a huge success and the pupils really enjoyed chatting to the teachers about their schools in Antwerp and Manchester.

A big thank you to Cork inter-county stars Joanne Casey and Rena Buckley, who brought the O’Duffy cup and the Brendan Martin cup to our school assembly. BEWARE of Gum Disease!

You may be aware that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss today, but did you know that gum disease is linked to heart disease and strokes,pregnancy problems such as low birth weight, diabetes and respiratory disease? It may be more serious than you think.

Gum disease is inflammation of the tissues which support the teeth and attach them to the jaw. It arises when plaque and tartar build up on the teeth. Plaque can be removed with careful toothbrushing and flossing.

Tartar forms when plaque is hardened by minerals such as calcium present in saliva. Tartar has to be removed professionally by your dentist or hygienist. Smoking also has a very harmful effect on the gums. Every smoker has gum disease but some smokers are affected worse than others.

You may not notice the gum disease until it is quite advanced.

Therefore, it is important to visit your dentist regularly and to be aware of the following signs: red swollen gums, bleeding gums, bad breath, bad taste, gum recession, teeth starting to drift apart, teeth starting to loosen.

What can you do to help prevent/treat gum disease? Thoroughly and gently brush your teeth and gums for 2 to 4 minutes twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste. Clean between the teeth with floss or interdental toothbrushes. Visit your dentist regularly for a check up and a professional clean to remove plaque and tartar. At your next visit, why not ask your dentist or hygienist how best to keep your teeth clean? It could save your teeth and improve your health!

On Tuesday, 29th June 1869, the artisans and workers employed by Messrs.

Martin Mahony and Brothers in the Blarney Woollen Factory, with their wives and children enjoyed their mid-summer’s holiday in a most agreeable manner.

Having sometime previously clubbed together to provide the sinews of war, in which they were well supplemented by their considerate employers, they assembled shortly after 12 o’clock in the field in front of the woollen factory, where, under the superintendence of their excellent manager, Mr. Scott, and the foremen of the several departments, they formed into procession. Each department was under its own foreman, with a distinctive banner. The powerloom weavers were in front, followed by the hands from the carding rooms, mule rooms, twisters, worsted-spinners, dyers, cloth-finishers, etc., etc., the entire preceded by the band from the Blind Asylum, in a waggonette and pair.

The day was beautiful and the scene was greatly enhanced by the large number of flags, banners, and flower devices which accompanied the procession, some of which were of a very novel character. There was on, in particular, executed by Mr. & Mrs. Scott, which was universally admired. It was a white banner, with a green border, bearing the motto, “Blarney tweeds and yarns,” in green letters. A star in the centre was composed of the celebrated Blarney tweeds, and around the bottom tassels made of their fancy worsted yarns had a very good effect. The proceedings were greatly enlivened by the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Mahony, Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Mahony, Mrs. Daniel O’Sullivan, Miss Breen, Father T. O’Mahony, C.C. Cork, and a few other friends who entered into the sports with great enjoyment.

The turn-out of the fair sex, too, was something worth admiring, with their handsome dresses and cheerful countenances, shewing plainly that factory employment is more healthful and agreeable than most people imagine. The procession marched around the village, then over to the orchard near the castle (which was kindly lent them for the occasion) where they partook of at least some of the good things of this life in the shape of a hearty dinner. After this had been disposed of the dancing commenced in real earnest. The proceedings were diversified with bag, twin, and backward races which afforded unbounded delight by the efforts to be up and going again which accompanied a fall. The people were again regaled with a substantial repast in the evening, and after some more dancing and racing the sports were brought to a close by what might safely be called the event of the day, viz., a pig race. Mr. Porker after being thoroughly greased was set out into a large open space, when the unsuccessful efforts of the men to hold on by the slippery fellow were most ludicrous; however, after a hunt of about fifteen minutes he was cleverly caught by one of the men, named Philip Field. The proceedings were witnessed by at least fifteen hundred spectators, who had the use of two footballs, which kept them pretty warmly employed.

After enjoying themselves to near nine o’clock, the procession formed again, and marched to the field where they assembled in the morning. They were then formed into a circle, when Mr. Scott addressed them at some length, complimenting them highly on the admirable manner in which they had behaved, and promising them another fete on some future occasion. Mr. Scott concluded his remarks by proposing three hearty cheers for Messrs. Martin Mahony and Brothers, who always took such a great interest in the welfare and prosperity of their workers. His remarks were responded to by three such hearty cheers, as have rarely been heard in Blarney. Three cheers being for Mr. and Mrs. Scott, and three more for the rest of the foremen, they were dismissed all highly delighted with their days enjoyment.

It would be unjust to conclude without remarking on the admirable manner in which the band of the Blind Asylum performed its duties. The excellent conductor, Mr. Howard, was always cheerful and obliging, and contributed greatly to the enjoyment of the occasion.

Fire at St. Ann’s, Blarney.

About two o’clock this morning, one of the Turkish Baths at St. Ann’s, Blarney, the establishment of Doctor Barter, was observed to be on fire. There are two sets of Turkish baths connected with the establishment, one of which has been built a very short time. The fire broke out in the old baths, and was observed almost simultaneously by the watchman and the inmates, most of the latter being fortunately, up at the time. Active exertions were at once made to subdue the flame, in which all the gentlemen, and even many of the ladies, joined with the most praiseworthy energy. A small fire engine, kept on the premises, was got into gear and set to work, and a plentiful supply of water being at hand, it was found most serviceable. The inflammable matter of the materials about the bath, however, rendered all endeavours to save it futile, and those present turned their attentions to preventing the fire from extending to the new baths and to securing the buildings close by. The police of the Blarney and Leemount stations, under Constables Baldwin and Slattery, hastened to render assistance and ably seconded the exertions of the gentlemen stopping at the establishment. Among the latter, Doctor O’Loughlin was most active, both in personal exertions, and in directing the operations of others, and among the other gentlemen who also rendered great assistance were – Mr. Grey, a student of Trinity College, Dublin, Mr. Townsend of Garrycloyne, Major Crosbie, Co. Kerry, Major C. Raleigh, Chichester, and others. The communication between the old and the new baths was torn down as quickly as possible; and this, with a plentiful supply of water from the hose of the engine, effectually preserved the latter from all injury. The distance of the baths from the main building was such that, under any circumstances, fire could not communicate from one to the other, but there were two thatched log buildings in the immediate vicinity of the baths, ,which might have been destroyed, but for the exertions used to save them. One of them, a small circular house, was connected with the old bath, and was used as a dressing room for the gentlemen, but by cutting away the communication between it and the bath, and drenching it with water it was saved from injury. The other, which is larger, is divided into bedrooms for patients, and stands about 20 yards away from the bath. The thatched roof excited some fears for its safety, but the end near the bath was quickly covered with wet blankets, which preserved it from injury. By these means the fire was entirely confined to the old bath, which in three or four hours was completely destroyed, nothing but the bare walls being left standing. Neither the new baths nor any of the other buildings sustained any injury. It is not known how the fire originated; careful precautions are constantly used to prevent any accident of the kind. The night watchman examines the furnaces of the baths every half-hour to see that all is right, and it is not supposed probable that fire could have originated from them. The fire, though it burned fiercely for a time, was not calculated to excite….as the baths were entirely detached from the other buildings and at a perfectly safe distance from most of them.

A not so nippy November

November was relatively warm and unseasonal but the end of the month brought a few frosty nights and the first hints of winter. The colours in our arboretums and woodlands have been exceptional this year and I’m sure our fantastic summer had something to do with this.

This time of year is always hectic here in the gardens. A lot of people think that we slow down in the winter months but in reality it never does! As our tourist season dies down and the general maintenance jobs like grass cutting ease off we start our seasonal jobs and new projects.

We are well underway with tidying and we are currently cutting back and mulching the herbaceous borders. We had to wait until the overnight frosts came, and plants started to die back. It’s a little sad every autumn to see it fade away and it’s hard to imagine that all that lush growth will be back in abundance next year. This year we are mulching the beds with Gee-Up which is composted horse manure. It is locally available and we are very pleased with it.

Tree and shrub planting is another seasonal job that we have just begun.

We have just planted 26 specimen trees to replace storm damaged and diseased individuals or as part of new developments. Our azalea collection is also being added to with around 120 new plants.

A big job for us this time of the year is leaf collection. We compost a lot of our leaf litter, as it’s a free source of extremely good mulch for plants.

Let’s face it the natural ways are usually the best! We do not however collect up the leaves from our main Lime tree avenue. These are pushed back under the trees to provide protective mulch and feed for the snowdrop and bluebell bulbs that live there.

We have put our tree ferns to bed, well wrapped up to protect from the elements, or in some cases, moved indoors for the winter. Dicksonia antarctica is the common tree fern and is generally hardy in light frosts.

The crowns of our tree ferns are protected by first stuffing with straw, then wrapping in horticultural fleece. This is a tried and tested method.

December is always a month where we aim to finish up projects etc, but I have learnt to be fairly realistic. Life goes on in January! Other work for the month includes wind lopping roses to prevent wind rock, roughly digging over vegetable beds, sorting out compost bins and spreading on the surface of vegetable beds, tidying up and disinfecting glasshouses, lifting and dividing herbs and some herbaceous perennials, planting of bare root hedging, planting or moving bare root trees and shrubs, pruning grape vines, once they are fully dormant, pruning established apple and pear trees once dormant, tree surgery and general housekeeping.

We have had a great year here in the gardens and I feel that things have progressed very well. We have renovated several overgrown areas of the gardens and added more paths and a new boardwalk along the river which have been well received. Our main aim is to constantly strive to improve the overall standards of the gardens and add more labels and educational information for the visitors.

All of us here in the castle and gardens would like to wish everybody a very happy Christmas and a prosperous new year. We hope to see more of you in the gardens next year. Do make use of the season passes, as they represent excellent value for money.

The Christmas lights in The Square were turned on last week, accompanied by the young voices from our local primary schools. Big thanks to Edward Healy and Jim Barrett for their help, and Anne Gabriel who brought Santa in style on the back of her trike much to the children’s delight! Blarney United FC look back with pride on another successful year

BU FC can look back on 2014 with great pride especially in the Schoolboys, Youths and underage development. All of these areas of the club performed with outstanding results and are the backbone of the Club and the key to Future success at Senior and Junior Level. BU FC would like to thank all the Managers, Coaches, Helpers, Volunteers, Parents, Players, Committee Members and our Sponsors for the hard work and support throughout 2014.

BU FC was awarded the Cork City and County Sports award for the Month of May 2014 and this was in recognition of the league wins for 2014 Under 12 Division 1, Under 12 Division 5, Under 17 Division 1, Under 18 Division 1. The award was presented to the club at a luncheon in the Meteropole Hotel by Lord Mayor Mary Shields, Sponsor of the award John Buckley Sports, Chairman of BU FC Brian Murray, Schoolboy Chairman Finbarr Hogan and the Managers and Captains of the winning teams.

Prosperous is certainly a word that can be used to describe the current on field achievements of our Senior team at the moment.

Chairman Brain Murray appointed former Cork City player Danny Murphy as Senior team Manager in the Summer and his brief would be to bring through the current young talent at the club from our under 18s, 19s and Junior team and add them to the already experienced players such as Ray O Leary, Allan Weldon, Damien Roddis, Denis Buckley, Aiden leahy, Stephen Jennings, Anthony Crowley, Ivan O Leary, Barry O Mahony. Danny had to experiment at the start of the season to find the right blend and balance to the team, beaten in all Cup games was not the start anyone wanted...BUT you would gladly swop those Cup defeats if in December the team is undefeated in all league games and Top of the Table and that's exactly where the senior team is.

Danny has brought in young local players under 17 captain from last season Martin O Sullivan, Eric Baxter and Scott Shine from the 18s, Alan and Shane Stewart from the 19s, Jordan O Connor who has been a revelation up front, 7 aside player of the tournament in the summer Sean Blake and with the return of goalkeeper Cian Woods from Cork City under 19s and find of the season so far is young Pops Crowley who at the age of 16 has shown skill, talent and maturity that bely his age.

The last league game the Seniors played was a top of the table clash against Bandon at home and despite having a man sent of in the second half they went on to win 1-0 Mossy Carroll getting the winner after Barry O Mahony went on a run from the half way line beat 3/4 players before picking out Carroll who drove the ball past the hapless Bandon Goalkeeper. That game was Match of the week and Congratulations to Pops Crowley who was awarded Man of the Match.

Two players missing from the squad this season are Aaron O’Raw and Connor Mac Carthy who joined Cork City U19s and are both playing at centre half together

every week. BU FC wish both of them every success at City.

Our under 12 A and B teams both won their respective leagues in 2013/14 and continue to be in contention again in chase for league honours this season. The A team are playing in the Under 13 Premier Division this Season and a step up to Premier league football anyone who knows their football will tell you that your first season up premier if you stay up your doing well.

Not alone are they going to stay up but they have a great chance to win it....unbeaten in all league games they are joint top of the table with College Corinthians who are also unbeaten in the league and it looks like the winner of this league us going to go one of them. They play their league games every Saturday Morning the

kick off times vary from 10.30-11 if you have not had the chance to watch these rising stars yet then you should make a new years resolution to watch them play in 2015.

I’m sure locals will also benefit from the improved amenities put in place by these groups”. Cllr Moynihan said.

The blood bank also came to Donoughmore on Monday 1st December and many members attended.

Donoughmore Macra is delighted to announce that on the 6th December, club members will partake in two national finals. The Public Speaking team of Tom Carroll, Meig Collins and Emily O'Donovan will travel to Mayo to compete in the National Final. They beat off stiff competition in the semi-final where Meig Collins won the 'Best Speaker' award.

This will be followed by Tom Carroll competing in the National final of the Impromptu Public Speaking later the same evening. His semi-final took place in Templemore where he defeated Macra members from all over Munster. Congratulations on your success so far and best of luck.

Vicarstown National School bids farewell to Mr Sheehan

Tell us a little about your own education?

And how you became a Teacher?

I was educated at Clontead National School, Coachford and Coachford Community College. I studied for a Law Degree BCL in UCC from 1996 to 1999 and I qualified as a Primary School Teacher as a postgraduate student in Mary Immaculate College Limerick from 2000-2001. I taught 1st and 2nd classes in Rathpeacon National School from 2001 to 2004.

When did you start working in Vicarstown National School?

As Vicarstown I started on September 1st 2004, and I was appointed National School Principal in June 2004 when there were 35 pupils on bids a fond roll. It was a two teacher school, with each teacher farewell to teaching 4 classes. Numbers began to expand from 2005 principal Marc Sheehan we take a onwards, and we gained a third class room teacher from September 2006 onwards and a 4th classroom teacher look at his tenure in from September 2009. Also over that time we Vicarstown and established two Special Educational Needs posts in the what the future school and up to four SNA post over that period as well. holds for him.

Tell us a bit about your career in Vicarstown?

I have had a very enjoyable busy time. The school has expanded from 35 pupils to a peak of 92 pupils during my 10 year tenure as Principal, I oversaw the extension and refurbishment of the school buildings in 2010 and I was involved in the appointment of new teachers and SNA’s. I was very pleased to be part of the Establishment of the European Modern Primary School which was launched in 2009 by Minister Batt O’Keeffe. The Minister

The school was delighted to receive a visit from Wayne O’Callaghan, Captain of the Irish Special Olympic Soccer Team who won a Gold Medal at the Games in Belgium recently. Wayne’s team went for Gold with their 4 – Nil defeat over Israel in the Final.

also official opened the two classroom extension in January 2011. Two GAA Presidents, Nicky Brenan in 2005 and Chisty Cooney in 2011 visited the school as part of Féile.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement during your 10 years in Vicarstown?

I have particularly enjoyed engaging with the local community getting their support for the Building Project and generating interest in the School. I was very pleased to be part of the building up the reputation of the school.

Tell us about the Sciath na Scol?

We qualified for the 2014 Football Final v Leamlara National School. It was a great achievement to get to the final and we had some near misses along the way. Vicarstown has had some very good players over the years and some years we were very unlucky not to reach the final, the matches were always very exciting in both Hurling and Football. It is a great achievement to be in the 9 aside football competition final. We have enjoyed great support from Inniscarra GAA and their schools coach Don Hennessy.

What is your hope for the future?

Well as you know I got married over the summer in Galway to Caitriona.

Caitriona is from Kilkenny and her father is from Freemount, County Cork. I am looking forward to the new challenge in St. Annin’s National School Rosscahill, Co. Galway, it is different type of role as an Administrative Principal and I look forward to starting.

How do you feel about leaving your Children’s officer post and Rebel-Og Chair in the GAA and do you hope to return/will you get involved in the GAA in Galway?

I will be a little bit sad leaving them, the whole experience has been tremendously enjoyable and demanding. It was great to be involved with the reorganisation of the underage structures and the establishment of Rebel Og and also to be involved with promoting good practice in terms of child protection procedures in the role of Children’s Officer.

Have you got anything further to add?

I have been very grateful to the staff in Vicarstown National School. I am also very grateful to the Parish of Inniscarra. I have been very fortunate to have worked with Siobhan Looney from my first day in Vicarstown and all of the teachers, Bernie The pupils raised €270 for the O’Sullivan, Fr. Lomansey, Fr. Jeans4Genes Day Fundraiser for the McDermott, Fr. Coakley and the Mercy Hospital Foundation.

Exciting development at Blarney GAA as new gym is unveiled

Established in 1884, Blarney GAA Club has a long history of serving the local community. The club has developed and changed many times over its long history, but the one thing that remains a constant is the community...the heart of the club!

Recently appointed Chairman, Kevin Kelleher is quick to highlight, "We reach out to and include all members of our community. Our volunteers and players come from all walks of life and I think that is what makes our club so special. There is a real sense of togetherness.”

Kevin outlines the club’s latest venture, which is currently in motion - a gym. “Our Club are always looking to improve both on and off the pitch.

Over the past few months the club have embarked on another project of a gym to add to our existing facilities.”

The gym will be open to all members and teams within the club and it is intended to make the facility available to wider local community groups when operational. It is hoped to have the gym operational by 1st February 2015, where all teams can benefit and get the most out of each training

session.

The project is broken into three phases 1. Acquire a new building (achieved) 2. Upgrade the building to accommodate new gym (achieved) 3. Furnishing of gym equipment (January 2015) The overall project will cost up to €20,000 to complete and so far 66% of this cost has been raised by the club.

The gym is well on its way, with the club erecting a building behind the existing clubhouse. Over the last number of weeks, the upgrade of the building has been carried out once again by club members on a voluntary basis.

The existence of a gym will assist in the promotion of a healthy living environment within the Blarney area. Blarney GAA is delighted to be able to provide a facility that can in time improve the health and well-being of the whole community.

Anna Geary, Captain of the Cork Senior Ladies Camogie Team and Briege Corkery, Captain of the Cork Senior Ladies Football Team received Cork Persons of the Month Awards to mark their All-Ireland wins this year. Dual Player Briege Corkery, and past Texaco Player of the Year, played in every minute of Cork's nine football All-Ireland wins over the past ten years. She also holds five camogie All-Ireland medals, and back in 2005 was named national female sports person of the year. Anna Geary is a winner of four All-Star awards, most recently in 2011. She also holds four All-Ireland camogie medals with Cork, and captained this year's team. This year she was also the Cork Rose at the Rose of Tralee Festival.
