The boys and girls had a wonderful time at the recent Just4Fun Summer camp at the fantastic Ballyanly community centre complex with a huge variety of inflatables, games, art and craft, Superstars and much more.

Congratulations to BFS Manager Mark Byrne who, despite battling ongoing health issues, was awarded Forecourt Manager of the year at the Shelflife Retail Manager Awards 2022. He then went on to do the double being awarded Supreme Champion across all categories!

Blarney Golf Club have a new member who was captured so beautifully on camera between the 5th and 6th holes during their Ladies Open Day by Máire Sweeney.

Cork City Council 'Sports On The Green' programme took place last week in Gleann Na Ri, Tower and the children enjoyed a fantastic sunny week with the coaches! Deputy Lord Mayor Damian Boylan popped in to say hello and thanks were paid to all, with a special mention to Gavan Daly.

It isn't often two Coachford boys get to represent Ireland on the same team on the same day but last weekend in Turners Cross Adam Murphy and Luke Casey put on the green shirt and took to the field to play for the Irish Amateur Soccer team in a international match against Wales. The two friends have gone through the ranks at Coachford AFC and won countless trophies with the club all through their career from schoolboys, to youths and onto the adult teams. Adam still plays with the club while Luke has moved a few miles down the road to play with Rockmount.

Blarney Ladies Club Open Day was a tremendous success with members and visitors alike playing fantastic golf and enjoying themselves throughout the day. Thanks were paid to Lady Captain Cathy, Vice Captain Sandra, the committee, and everybody involved in making the day such a success.

Vicarstown National School

Vicarstown national school were absolutely thrilled with their Gold Medal Award and prize money of €200 from the Cork Schools Garden Competition organised by Cork County Muintir na Tire, this year both Cork City and County joined together for the competition meaning they were competing with 46 other schools.

5th and 6th classes put so much work into the garden, the theme was countries of Europe and which foods are grown there and they had raised beds representing,The Netherlands, France, Spain and Ireland. Each bed included a well known monument from the country it was growing food from, all made from recycled materials. They had a windmill, tulips and sweetcorn from The Netherlands, France had the Eiffel Tower, Spain displayed Camp Nou with strawberries and tomatoes whilst the Irish bed grew potatoes, cabbage and leeks accompanied by a lovely traditional Irish cottage.

Senior infants and first and second class blasted the bank at the side of the pitch with school made seed bombs, which was great fun and he flowers are in full bloom now!

The school has a fantastic wildlife/biodiversity path around the back of the playing field which was dug and laid out by Martin, one of the parents from the school, the path is sign posted with posters designed by Alannah and coloured in by junior infants.

Meanwhile 3rd and 4th class had a balcony garden on the step outside their classroom growing lettuce, dahlias and wildflowers.

Rang Liath, Dughorm and Or also had spring and summer flowering bulbs and grew pumpkins from seeds saved from last years pumpkins.

No wonder the judges were impressed!

The 8 week ‘Give it a try’ rugby programme which took place recently at Ballyanly was a huge success with 40 girls enjoying coaching, obstacle courses and, on the last night, pizza too!

Thanks were paid to the coaches, Munster Women's Rugby and Ireland Rugby and Canterbury for their support on the programme.

The official route for Cannonball 2022 has been announced and it is confirmed that the supercar spectacle is coming back to Cork on Friday September 9th. Cork based charity, the HOPE Foundation is the chosen charity, the event has already raised €1,298,779 for Irish charities and organisers are hoping to reach €250,000 for HOPE by the end of September 2022. Cannonball is the largest organised road trip in Europe and this year the event will have the highest ever number of car entries including Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren , Aston Martin Porsche, Rolls Royce Bentley and Maserati.

Brazilian Dancers will bring all the glamour of carnival and live DJs, bands and festivals in host towns get the party started. The notorious NYPD, German Polizei, Cannonballers and celebrities in crazy costumes add to the melee; from Spiderman to Star Wars, Cat Woman to Wonder Woman, cheerleaders to Charlie’s Angels, Batman, the Joker and more, it is a totally unique free family day out. This year, organisers are also calling on spectators to dress up in fancy dress with prizes for best dressed.

Hannah is the pride of Blarney!

Talking to the Muskerry News on their return from the European Youth Olympic Festival Hannah’s parents Pat and Kiann told us,"We are so proud of our 15 year old daughter Hannah for representing Ireland and her club Belgooly AC at the (EYOF) European Youth Olympic Festival 2022, in Banská Bystrica Slovakia. It has taken Hannah almost 9 years of hard training to get to the EYOF and Hannah has dealt some injuries over the 9 years including last year when she tore her hamstring in training, after which she worked very hard to get back to fitness to get the time she needed to go to the EYOF to compete in the 200m sprint.

Having made it to Slovakia Hannah qualified for the semi finals of the Girls 200m sprint, and faced very strong competition and unfortunately she did not qualify for the final. She was also part of the melody relay team where she ran the second leg the 200m, the team just missing out by one place to make the final. It has been a great learning experience but it was just not her day."

Hannah concluded by saying, “You have to love what you are doing because it can be a hard and lonely sport. I miss out on lots of events with my friends and family because of the training and competitions, but I will never give up.”

Congratulations Hannah, we are all so proud of you.

Cork finalists shine bright for Miss Ireland in its 75th jubilee year with six finalists including two local women Saoirse O’Shaughnessy and Eve Mullins Miss Cork Saoirse O’Shaughnessy is a 22-year-old living in Coachford and is currently working as a full-time care assistant in A&E in the CUH and recently qualified as a personal trainer. Saoirse has plans on becoming a Critical Care Paramedic in the future with a passion for healthcare and medicine. Her goal for the year is to promote the importance of knowing first aid and CPR and she hopes to educate as many people on this life saving skill. Miss Cork City Eve Mullins is 21 years old and is living in Whitechurch.

She is currently studying Early Years and Childhood Studies in University College Cork and hopes to pursue a career in Special Needs teaching and complete a PHD in Autism Studies. She has played inter county football for many years with Cork and has also competed in numerous World Irish Dance Championships.

The winner of Miss Ireland 2022 will receive a lucrative agency contract and a host of prizes before jetting off to represent her country at the Miss World Festival which is televised in over 100 countries around the world.

Person of The Year Awards 2022

Congratulations to our August Blarney & District Person of the Month!

The August 2022 Blarney & District Person of the Month is Brian Osborne.

In addition to his place at the cornerstone of quality food in Blarney, Brian is also well known in cycling circles. A former top finisher for Ireland in the world junior championships, Brian is a former Chairman of Blarney Cycling Club and has been a generous sponsor of the club and sport.

Brian Osborne, who handed over the reigns of Osborne Butchers this month to Criostoir O’Crualaoi and his team, will be sadly missed in the village.

For three generations the Osborne Family have worked as butchers throughout Cork and moved to Blarney in 1960 when Vincent Osborne opened the first Osborne Butchers store. Thanks to, first Vincent's and then, Brian’s hard work and excellent product the business grew and evolved to become one of the most respected butchers in the county, supplying not only local people but high quality restaurants also.

A staunch supporter of Blarney Tidy Towns and many other local organisations Brian proved himself to be invaluable during the pandemic, working through the crisis and offering a valuable home delivery service at a time when people could not get out.

Thanks for everything Brian, you’re going to be much missed.

A fantastic team of 27 volunteers made sure that Ballincollig parkrun event 240 took place recently and that 234 people ran, walked, and jogged the course safely under Run Director Simon Mouton. Cork on a Fork!

A delicious week has been added to the Cork diary as a brand new five day food festival will take place in venues and streets across Cork City centre from August 17th -21st.

and a free authentic Italian pizza making and tasting masterclass.

The whole family will enjoy play street activities on Beasley Street and Caroline Street, a Family BBQ on Beasley Street, and much more.

It’s the perfect opportunity to feast on the finest local food, take part in unique culinary experiences, discover the incredible range of local producers in the region, and enjoy the buzz of the city’s vibrant new outdoor dining and nightlife scene with food trails, tasting masterclasses, cooking demos, food talks, family fun, exciting night-time events, and more! Donoughmore Carnival Donoughmore Carnival commenced on Friday 22nd July with the hilarious Anne Gildea 'How to get the Menopause and enjoy it' show and concluded with a BBQ on Sunday 24th.

There was an amazing array of events to cater for all ages over the weekend with matches in all sporting codes for all ages.

There were also competitions in skittles, churn rolling, sheaf tossing, kids races, egg throwing, wellie throwing, a penalty shoot out, a mini-digger challenge and a fabulous fancy dress competition.

On Saturday night a beautiful ceremony was held in the community centre where a meeting meeting was named The Noreen O‘Regan Meeting Room in memory of our late friend and colleague, Noreen, who dedicated so much of her time for the community of Donoughmore. Her beloved catering club did her proud by providing teas/coffees and cakes for all present. A fitting tribute to a great lady. This was followed by the return of bingo to the parish with a huge crowd enjoying the event.

The vintage rally on Sunday was very well attended with lots of vehicles on display which attracted great interest from those present. Also on Sunday, Donoughmore Toddler Group, held an amazing event for this age group including face painting, dressed up characters, colouring sheets and giant board games.

Plan for almost 140 homes in Blarney have been approved despite council recommendation for rejection. The proposed development at Monacnapa, which has been granted planning permission by An Bord Pleanála, comprises of 105 houses and 32 apartments.

According to Sean McCarthaigh in the Irish Examiner, “A new development of almost 140 homes on the outskirts of Blarney has been given the green light by An Bord Pleanála, despite a recommendation by Cork City Council that planning permission should be refused because it would create an “unacceptable” risk in terms of road safety.

The board has approved plans for 105 houses and 32 apartments together with the demolition of existing buildings on a 7.8-hectare site at Monacnapa on the north-west side of Blarney under the fast-track planning process for strategic housing developments.

The new housing estate planned by developer, Eoin Sheehan, will be accessed by Sunberry Heights and Sunberry Drive off the Blarney Relief Road.

In its ruling, the board said the proposed development would not seriously injure the residential or visual amenities of the area or other properties.

It said the plans were also acceptable in terms of road safety and convenience.

However, it ordered the developer to omit two apartment blocks containing six housing units from its original plans to construct 38 apartments in buildings up to three storeys in height.

The board said the location of the two blocks, as well as their internal layout, would result in a substandard form of residential amenity for occupants.

Cork City Council had recommended that the project should be refused planning permission on the basis that its proposed density of 35 housing units per hectare was in breach of the county development plan.

Council planners also expressed concern that the development would give rise to a serious traffic hazard and would create “an unacceptable risk.”

A report by an inspector with An Bord Pleanála acknowledged the council’s concerns about road safety issues, but said the developer had demonstrated that traffic volumes would not be increased significantly by the proposed development.

As the site was zoned for residential development and the access options must have formed a consideration in the original zoning, the inspector said “a solution must be possible if this site is to be developed.”

“There is nothing inherent in the design that would create a traffic hazard,” the inspector said.

Subject to compliance with a number of planning conditions, the board said the development was also acceptable in terms of quantum and density for an accessible urban location.

It acknowledged that approving the project would represent a material contravention of the existing Cork County Development Plan (although the site now comes under the control of Cork City Council following local authority boundary changes) as well as the local area plan for Blarney on grounds of density.

However, the board said the development could be justified because of the strategic nature of the site for the delivery of housing in Blarney and national policy on promoting compact growth.

A total of 30 third-party submissions about the development were made to An Bord Pleanála including ones from a local residents’ group and Cork North Central TD, Mick Barry, and his council colleague, Fiona Ryan.

Many submissions highlighted how the latest plans are practically identical to similar planning applications which had been rejected

by An Bord Pleanála in 2020.

Residents of Sunberry Drive and Sunberry Heights also expressed concern that the existing road infrastructure in the area was inadequate to cater for the new development.

However, the project received support for four parties who welcomed the development given the massive shortage of new houses being built in Blarney.

Volunteers are badly needed, the work they do has been dependent on the same few groups and individuals for a long time now and this has put a great strain on them. The work has increased and projects are plentiful but the number of Volunteers hasn’t and they don’t have enough people on the ground to get through all the work that needs to be done.

Once again, they are pleading with people to come out and do their bit. Whether you’re an individual, group, business, school or club they need YOU. Many of their members are older and the work is becoming too much for them and it’s new blood they need if they are to survive.

Ballincollig Tidy Towns should be so much more than a few who give so much of themselves, it needs to reach right across the community. Other Tidy Towns groups Volunteers keep growing, allowing their work to grow and we wonder why it isn’t the same for Ballincollig?

The group cannot stand still or worse slowly disappear, they need people to come out and take up the challenge to improve the community they live in. It is not enough for people to pass by and say ‘well done what a great job you are doing’. Be part of the work being done and part of the result.

Behind the Castle Walls July has been a busy month for us here in the gardens. It has been exceptionally dry and although we were delighted to see the sun and feel the balmy summer temperatures, it did create problems with watering. We have done a large amount of planting over the last few months, and it would be terrible to see everything suffering due to lack of water.

Time taken watering pulls people away from their usual work so it’s always a challenge to keep the balance.

There are certain areas of the gardens that deserve a special mention this time of year. If you are visiting in the next few weeks make sure to see our Tropical Border, Jungle and Fern Garden that have all exploded into growth over the past few weeks. The Herbaceous borders, Poison Garden and the Seven Sisters are also well worth seeing. There is good colour throughout the grounds and gardens though, and a little exploring often pays dividends.

The Rathpeacon history project filming and recording is going strong and they recently met with John, Aileen and Theresa Ahern and heard great stories from John about his time farming, transporting beet to the factory in Mallow and a few tales about the Pyke Bar aka Dan Jim’s aka The Country Squire.

I recently had the pleasure of conducting tours of the gardens for several specialist horticultural groups and the feedback we received has been exceptional. It’s always good to get positive feedback, and it gives us all a little boost and encourages us to strive for even greater things. I am still regularly meeting visitors who are completely shocked by the size, scope and quality of the grounds and gardens here. Our target is to be world class and to make the gardens a destination in their own right and I love it when we get the recognition that I feel the team deserves.

We are in the process of summer pruning our fruit trees. Apples and pears can be pruned now to encourage fruit buds to form next year and to maintain shape or train the tree into a shape. There are two periods for pruning, December/January, and July/August. As a rule, winter pruning encourages growth of new shoots and summer pruning discourages growth. We also prune stone fruits now, tipping back and tying in new growth on our wall trained plums, peaches, and nectarines. Stone fruits should only be pruned in early spring or midsummer as this reduces the chance of silver leaf disease. Fruit pruning is not very complicated if you follow a few basic rules, and there are many helpful sites on the internet with step-by-step guides.

A good tip for this time of year is to plan your Autumn bulb order early. You can probably remember what you have in your garden, and what’s done well. Make a few notes as to where you would like some extra colour, then select bulbs that suit. Too often bulbs end up as an impulse buy that get stuck in a corner and forgotten about.

This can lead to some nice surprises but often leads to disappointment. Bulbs, like any other plant, have certain preferences and it pays to do a little research first. A little planning now saves disappointment later.

I was exploring one of our wildflower meadows over the weekend and was blown away by the diversity and numbers of insects that it supports. There was a constant hum of buzzing surrounding me and many varieties of bees feeding on flowers, giant dragonflies on the hunt, and butterflies fluttering by. We have left more areas to nature around the lake and field verges as well as creating specific wildflower meadows and I feel the whole estate is benefitting from being just that tiny bit wilder. I hope some of you will visit soon and see for yourselves.

Sports on the Green. I am proud to work with Cork ETB & Cork Sports Partnership to deliver sports sessions for children in housing estates throughout the city this Summer. So far this has taken place in 40 venues!

Essential construction and Bridge maintenance is taking place on Wyse's Bridge Killard, it started on July 15th for approximately 5 weeks, with the road being closed for the first 2 weeks and then single-lane traffic for the following 3 weeks.

I was delighted to open Pride in the Park, one of 37 different events organised over the course of Pride week, another being the newest and most colourful additions to Cork City's public realm, two Progress Rainbow Crossings with huge support from Cork City Council. This is a “Visible and physical symbol of Cork's commitment to being an open, welcoming and inclusive city."

Construction of a retaining wall and footpath on the R579 near Healys Bridge started on the 26th of July for approximately 22 weeks.

Single-lane traffic will be in operation for most of the construction.

After many years of pursuing this, the beginnings of a full pathway between Healy’s Bridge and Leemount has now started as Cork City Council will be installing approximately 80m of new 2m wide concrete footpath along the R579 to fill a gap in connectivity and to improve safety at the bend. In order to install the footpath we need to install a retaining wall adjacent, also for approximately 80m.

For anyone who doesn’t know we are based in the Old Covent Hall which is home to a myriad of classes and activities that you may not be aware of. From badminton to dance, to Cork Pride meetings and Blarney Brass and Reed Band rehearsals. Yoga, photography and guitar lessons too, you’d be amazed what goes on behind our doors!

In answer to our recent online survey you told us that you would love to see a youth club, board game nights, toddler groups, a book club, computer literacy and art classes, local history talks, community allotments and many more great ideas. We are investigating them all and will update you as soon as we have news.

You bring the ideas and the energy and enthusiasm and let’s see what we can do together!

Regarding St Patrick’s Day the majority of people who responded to our survey were in favour of festival rather than a parade, and we are working on that. Your ideas included a food market, a community family fun day and live music. We will need your input and help so please reach out and get involved.

News from Times Past with Brian Gabriel, Blarney & District Historical Society Launch of ‘Old Blarney’ Journal Issue 13 Blarney and District Historical Society achieved another milestone with the launch of a new ‘Old Blarney’ Journal at the Blarney Castle Hotel on Wednesday 13 th July 2022. This is Issue 13 in the Journal series and is a welcome addition to our Local History collection. It has sub-titles of: Decade of Centenaries 1913-1923 and War of Independence Commemoration Issue.

Printed by printmybook.com, a subsidiary of Carrig Print Litho Press Ltd on high quality gloss paper, it contains a look at life from times no longer with us. Mr. Sean Horgan, Chairperson of the Society, opened the function by welcoming all attendees and congratulated Cllr. Damian Boylan on being elected as Deputy Lord Mayor. Apart from our own locals and members, we had a few visitors from other countries. Sean thanked all the people involved in the production of this issue, especially the local businesses, media, the Parish Newsletter and all who assisted in any way in the promotion of ’Old Blarney’ Journals. Ian, Una and the Forrest Family were especially thanked for most generously hosting and sponsoring the launch, making the Lemon Tree room available and supplying the refreshments. It was indeed very much appreciated. Mr. John Mulcahy, the Honourary Editor of all 13 ‘Old Blarney’ Journals and 5 Photo-journals, was then invited to say a few words about the latest production. He presented a short resume of each article and its author, highlighting the important work being done by collecting and publishing these priceless accounts of events which are passing from the memories of people and are in danger of being lost forever. Articles include items on Frank Busteed, Vice-Commandant, 6 th Battalion, 1 st Cork Brigade IRA by Brian O’Donoghue, The Fighting O’Doherty’s of Shamrock Terrace by John Mulcahy, Spying on the Enemy by John Mulcahy, Brieflets from Blarney 1922 by Richard Forrest, T.M. Donovan, Doctor, Athlete by Brian Gabriel, The Painter, the Priest and Snap Apple Night by John Mulcahy, and a poem, The Blarney Stone by John Fitzgerald. John also mentioned the importance of younger people becoming involved with the Society and helping to replace those who are no longer with us. It would help to keep the Society active with new ideas, projects and fresh thinking. Thanking everyone involved, he then officially launched the new edition of ‘Old Blarney’. The Chairperson thanked John for his contribution and all those people in advance who we hope will now buy the book and enjoy our new production. People were then invited to stay awhile for a chat, look through the book and enjoy the evening and the refreshments provided by the Blarney Castle Hotel. ‘Old Blarney’ Journal Issue 13 makes an ideal gift for relatives or friends living abroad and is a welcome addition to a collection. It is available through local retail outlets, committee members and at the Society monthly lectures in Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál. and is well worth the €15 price tag.

There was phenomenal success for Blarney Inniscarra AC at the recently held national championships when our athletes went toe to toe with the best athletes throughout the whole country bringing home 17 medals across relay, individual and pairs events.

Donnacha, Cathal, Josh, Jakub and Andrew, Aine, Dawn, Niamh, Nell and Isabelle of the U9 boys and U13 girls teams were crowned national relay champions, in the pairs event Cathal and Jakub were crowned boys U9 60m sprint champions and Josh and Donnacha won silver medals in the U9 long jump. Nell continued her dream season by winning 3 medals, apart from anchoring the U13 girls team to relay glory she jumped a personal best in the high jump to claim a silver medal and took bronze in the shot putt, also claiming a 4th place in the turbo javelin.

Meabh completed the medal haul by claiming a silver medal in the U15 girls discus after throwing a big personal best in the event.

The club had a number of other notable performances that were just outside winning medals. Ava and Leah came 4th in the U11 girls 600m and 5th in the turbo javelin, Patrick and Dhani came 4th in the boys U 11 sprint and Andrew and Donnacha were 5th in the boys U9 turbo javelin. Eoghan was fantastic in the boys U12 60m and our U10 girls relay team of Eve, Eva, Eva and Caoimhe ran very well also.

Lee Gaels U8 Hurlers were in action at a blitz in Ballincollig GAA recently. They had a fantastic morning and played superbly using the skills they had been practicing at training.

Well done to Amy McCarthy, Blarney United U15 Premier Squad, who attended the FAI U15 Girl's National Academy at the AUL Complex in Dublin last month.

Muskerry Rugby Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Mike Pettman as head coach for the 2022-2023 season. Mike has been working with Munster since 2019 as the Technical Skills Development Coach and has also been involved with coaching the Ireland U18 Men’s 7s squad. He has represented Manawatu and New Zealand Universities, and also has experience of playing in Ireland having spent two seasons with Dolphin RFC in the AIL in the early 2000’s.

The Cork French Film Festival will return to the Gate Cinema from Thursday 1st September to Sunday 4th September, opening a window into the French-speaking world through the magic of film.

Eleven films, featuring some of the greatest Francophone film directors and actors, will be shown at the Gate Cinema during the four-day event. Some of the new and highly acclaimed films that will be shown are Full Time (À Plein Temps); The Crossing (La Traversée); France (with French actress Léa Seydoux); Authentik (Suprêmes); Playground (Un Monde), and Both Sides of The Blade (Avec amour et acharnement) - the new film by Claire Denis which won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival this year. The festival also includes a tribute to French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant, who passed away in June, with two classic films directed by Costa Gavras - Z (1965) and The Sleeping Car Murders (1969). There will also be a family screening on Sunday September 4th, and a film for post-primary schools will screen later on September 27th. The festival will open with a special screening of the delightful culinary French movie Délicieux, directed by Eric Besnard, with a celebration of French cuisine.

Inniscarra Camogie Club hosted its second GAA Kellogs Cúl Camp In Ballyanly with over 160 girls aged 6 to 13 in attendance. In parallel, Inniscarra GAA ran another Cúl Camp with an equivalent number of boys in attendance. The camp was a great success with excellent coaching from Club players from Inniscarra, Éire Óg, Newcestown, Blarney and Aghabullogue, ably led and coordinated by Inniscarra Senior player Aileen Sheehan. The girls took part in camogie, football and other key movement skills with an emphasis on fun games throughout the week.

All participants showed off their dance moves on Friday which was captured by drone footage and Wednesday was designated a 'red and white' day to mark a visit by Cork Senior and Minor players, some who were coaches at the camp. The Intercounty players spoke to the girls about their own experience of playing camogie and the importance of practising their skills every day. A question and answer session followed after which nearly every hurley, helmet, Cúl Camp t-shirt and boot was autographed! Friday was a 'Blue and White' Club colours day, with a visit from the Inniscarra Senior Captain and Junior Vice Captain with their recent league cups for photos and more advice. The camp concluded with the customary visit from an ice cream van resulting in a very happy group of girls at the end of a great week.
