Var. II
Var. V
mezzo sul pont.
Glissandos
The diminuendos repeat each note, from a baseline of pp. This is meant to imitate the piano, where each note decays immediately, however no accent is desired on the starts of each note. If too much dim. is used the music may drag, but the dim. should be present.
This variation uses something between the “brushing” and “circular” bow techniques found in Garth Knox’s Viola Space n° 8 - Up, down, sideways, round – more toward brushing, but where we still hear the pitch reliably.
Use a dry pizz. The more resonant notes/instruments should be damped.
A half sul pont., i.e. less of the sul pont. sound that usual.
Start immediately and use the full value of the note they are attached to. However, in lyrical passages sometimes the gliss. should be softer than the notes around it (i.e. a “Mahlerian” gliss. – more an expressive connection between notes).
al niente (dim. to nothing) dal niente (cresc. from nothing)
Adagio, molto sostenuto
Violin I Violin II Viola Cello
*) The bowing technique more towards brushing than circular, but with the pitch still audible. See Performance Notes.
