Stòras Ùr Son Nan Ealan Traidiseanta New Funds Available For Traditional Arts ..

A new fund has been launched to offer grants of up of £1,000 to organisations and individuals involved in Scottish Traditional Arts. The fund - Tasgadh - is devolved from Creative Scotland, managed by Fèisean nan Gàidheal and available to provide support for traditional artists and organisations to create, perform, tour and showcase work. Professional development applications can also be supported though the fund. Fèisean nan Gàidheal Chief Executive, Arthur Cormack, welcomed the commitment from Creative Scotland: “While Creative Scotland continues to support traditional arts directly and will deal with larger projects through other routes, it is important that there is access to small grants which are relatively light touch and offer a fast decision. We are delighted to be working with Creative Scotland to provide that kind of support for Scottish traditional music, dance and storytelling and expect a high level of uptake for the funds.” Brian Ó hEadhra, Gaelic Arts & Culture Officer at Creative Scotland said: “Fèisean nan Gàidheal have been developing traditional arts across Scotland for over 25 years and are well placed to successfully deliver this funding scheme. We are keen to get a good mix of art forms applying including music, dance and storytelling from the Gaelic and Scots traditions. Creative Scotland remains committed to working with partners in this sector to ensure that Scotland continues to have a vibrant living tradition across our communities, both rural and urban.” The fund is now open with three deadline dates for applications during 2015-16, the first of those being 3 July 2015. The Jazz Bar's Bill Kyle said: In awarding this, the BII judges commented on the uniqueness of our seven-nights-a-week, very high-quality late live music, the fact that these 12-3am events are always busy (yes, you know the place is jumping at weekends, but it’s also very busy at 1 or 2am on a Sunday, Monday or Tuesday night!), the wide age-range of our punters customers, the warm welcoming ambience, plus our exemplary trouble-free security and safety records. Now we have a nicely engraved large silver Quaich to squeeze on to our already crowded trophy shelf."

The BII Scotland Awards is run by volunteers, entirely not-forprofit, and I’d like to thank all the people behind the scenes too. Alba: Songs of Scotland featuring Eddi Reader The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) celebrates its twentieth anniversary in adventurous style by extensively touring Scotland’s north and west and travelling out to its island communities. From Arran to Mull, South Uist to Ullapool, Shetland to Orkney, they will be joined for eleven nights of amazing music by Eddi Reader in an enticing concert series performed in the heartlands of musical tradition.

indistinguishable and inseparable. Alba: Songs of Scotland is essentially the story of love in its many forms: from the devotional and the poetic to the mystical and the fierce. You will hear it warmly in the Gaelic of An Ataireachd Ard (the high surge of the sea), reflectively in Edwin Morgan and Tommy Smith’s golden Glen of Tranquility, and affectingly in the lilting Loch Tay Boat Song. Naturally, it’s impossible to consider the songs of Scotland without thinking immediately of Robert Burns. He was indisputably a love poet with few peers, and Eddi Reader is much admired as an interpreter of his work. These performances with the SNJO pay particular attention to intensity of Burns’ lyrical ardour in famous pieces such as Ae Fond Kiss and John Anderson My Jo, alongside the spent passion of his Jacobite’s lament.

Eddi Reader can only sing truthfully and from the heart. Perhaps this is how these songs should really be heard, with strong emotions tempered by understanding and self-knowledge. "The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

Carolyn Sparey studied violin and viola both at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College in Manchester, before launching her career on the British music scene. For two years she worked closely with Alfred Deller, the renowned counter-tenor, involving extensive tours of the USA, Canada and France, and regular recordings with Harmonia Mundi. Carolyn also appeared regularly on the South Bank (London), on BBC Radio 3, and on the British concert scene both as soloist and chamber player, as well as performing regularly with the London Sinfonietta, the Academy of St Martins in the Fields, and the English Chamber Orchestra. She also became a member of Yehudi Menuhin's chamber orchestra, involving many recordings and tours to Australia, New Zealand, America and Europe. She became Principal Viola with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra during its early years, and performed as a soloist in Bach's Brandenberg Concerto No.6 for BBC television. It was at this time that she became involved with the Fitzwilliam String Quartet, performing Bruckner and Mozart quintets both for BBC Radio 3, at

Carolyn's most recent project has been the setting of poems by Robert Burns, William Williamson, conductor of the Old Well Singers, had this to say of these new works:

"This is a wonderful addition to the heritage of Scottish song ..... to have new melodies is extremely refreshing and something of which Burns would have undoubtedly approved." Five Burns songs have been composed so far, published by The Art of Music https://theartofmusic.com/ the Wigmore Hall, and on tour in Italy. She was also a member of Alan Hacker's Music Party, with which she gave the first performance of Harrison Birtwistle's clarinet quintet. In September 2006, Rivka Golani came across some viola compositions and recordings by Carolyn, which prompted her to ask Carolyn if she would write her a viola concerto. Carolyn completed the 3 movement, 30 minute concerto entitled From Behind the Veils, which is a tribute to the great 19th century Persian poetess, Tahirih, who was imprisoned and then killed for her faith. Her composition, 'Fereshtehha', [Angels] for 20 solo strings, written in memory of ten Baha'i women who were martyred in Iran in 1983, was premiered by the Scottish Philharmonic Orchestra, with a performance in New Zealand for 2010. www.scottishmusiccentre.com/carolyn_sparey/

With the Chamber Group of Scotland, she performed the UK premiere of Penderecki's String Trio and Clarinet quartet. Since leaving the BBC SSO, Carolyn began to make her mark as a composer, her quartet heralded as truly an inspirational, moving, and challenging addition to the 21st century quartet repertoire by Alan George of the Fitzwilliam Quartet, who gave the first, and subsequent performances. Her virtuosic viola solo, Les Planchistes de Paris, which is a celebration of skateboarding, has also been welcomed enthusiastically, and her piano solo, Field, inspired by Anthony Gormley's sculpture of the same name, has become part of pianist Katherine Durran's repertoire. RACHEL SERMANNI

DON'T SHOOT

Amateurs

Tied to the Moon

The Wonderkid

The debut album from Edinburgh’s orchestral noise-pop collective, 'Amateurs’ is a spectacular amalgamation of live and programmable instrumentation that creates an overwhelmingly powerful sound. “Pure, simplistic and beautiful” - Artrocker "It’s the kind of music that makes me want to type all day in an attempt to describe its beauty” - The 405 “Urvanovic have managed to create a sound that is both complex and enchanting” The Vinyl District

Tied To The Moon was conceived in an apartment above a pottery studio deep in the sticks of Nova Scotia where Rachel had four days of complete stillness with no means to communicate with the outside world - during silent afternoons of coffee and pistachios, Rachel would sit, in total solitude; writing; reading; playing music. In the space of these four days she unintentionally wrote six songs - four that would later become the core of Tied To The Moon: ‘Tractor’, ‘This Love’, ‘Banks Are Broken’ and ‘Old Lady's Lament’.

"This EP should come with a warning, one listen to this and you'll be hooked" - Michael Chapman Chordblossom. “For a band who are both relatively new and irritatingly young, it’s impressive this track (Panic) is very much the finished product. Catchy, welcoming and flawlessly presented, they’re ready for a big step forward.”- BBC Across The Line. Don't Shoot entered Glasgow's 'Soundwave Music Competition' and after storming through the heats, they played the final at Glasgow's O2 ABC on the 10th of January 2015 and were announced winners that very night.

With a depth and range that bely his relatively tender years, David’s voice has drawn favourable comparisons to such iconic performers as Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Grammy award-winning country singer Ray Lamontagne. Held each Fling Saturday on Dunblane's historic Drying Green, its activities have ranged from an open stage for local young musicians, fire engines, space-hopper races and fire-eating jugglers, to the annual Rotary Club race for 4,000 plastic ducks down the Allan Water. Gradually a 'Fringe Fling' has developed, featuring over the years everything from ghost walks, pub quizzes, plays from the local Drama Group, master classes in everything from fiddling or mandolins to harmony singing or bodhran, and the now-annual Thursday Jazz Night. www.dunblanefling.com
