Three-time Canadian Folk Music Award nominee, Sarah Jane Scouten, will lead the Songwriting & Establishing a Musical Career Mentorship

Three-time Canadian Folk Music Award nominee, Sarah Jane Scouten, will lead the Songwriting & Establishing a Musical Career Mentorship. Now based in Moniave, Sarah Jane’s music delivers a signature mix of vintage folk and country music, with modern sounds and subjects. This mentorship is aimed at a young person who is keen to take the next step as a professional songwriter. The mentorship specifically does not teach you ‘how to’ write a song, but actively encourages the individual to cast a critical and objective eye over their process, brand and identity as a songwriter.

To apply for any of the DMC Futures mentorships, send a CV and Cover Letter explaining your interest in your desired www.dumfriesmusicconference.com mentorship to dumfriesmusicconference@gmail.com www.twitter.com/DMC_Dumfries by 5pm on Wednesday 16 September. www.facebook.com/DumfriesMusicConference

DMC Futures is an opportunity for young people (aged between 16 – 25) in Dumfries & Galloway to gain key industry insight and grow skills to nurture careers through an intensive programme of one-to-one sessions with a music industry professional delivered in-person and online. The one-to-one mentoring programmes will cover: Studio Recording (2 Mentorships available), Music Journalism and Songwriting & Establishing a Musical Career. Dave Miller, DMC General Manager and 2020 Mentor commented: “This is a unique opportunity for anyone interested in pursuing careers within the music industry in Scotland, and is a vital stepping stone for those wishing to broaden their skills, make connections, and learn first-hand how the industry functions. We’re delighted to still be able to continue our mentorship programme this year, despite the restrictions COVID-19 has enforced in any areas, and will be working with young people online and occasionally in person following strict social distancing guidelines.” The mentoring programmes, which can be arranged to suit the mentors and students, will run during September and October and will culminate in an involvement with Dumfries Music Conference 2020 online edition, taking place on Thursday 15th to Saturday 17th October. Each mentorship will amount to at least 12-hours of mentoring. Dave Miller and Lauren Gilmour will lead the Studio Recording Mentorship. Situated in Circa 16 Sound Recording in Dumfries, this mentorship will equip the mentee with the basics of studio recording from mixing, producing and hardware to recording software http://bit.ly/issuu-googleplay

The Scottish Music Industry Association, the team behind The SAY Award, strive to ensure equality and diversity are at the forefront of all they do and their commitment to a 50:50 gender split for the second year running is key to this work. This year’s Longlist will be decided by 100 impartial nominators, asked to vote for their favourite albums from this year’s Eligible Albums list. With the 2020 campaign seeing a record-breaking 362 Scottish albums submitted, this year’s nominators include a range of journalists, promoters, music retail and live venue staff, festival directors spanning all music genres and styles. This year’s Nominators list will be published on sayaward.com following the announcement of this year’s Longlist. The 11 judges, chaired by John Williamson, are tasked with listening to the twenty outstanding albums which make up this year’s Longlist to narrow down to a Shortlist of ten. Nine titles will be decided by the esteemed judging panel while the final album will be chosen by music fans in a 72-hour online public vote. At a time of crisis when much of our culture is confined to our borders, for the first time in the award’s history, The SAY Award will feature judges from four selected international territories; building upon and maintaining vital and valued international links for Scottish music. Returning for its ninth year in 2020, The SAY Award is widely recognised as one of the country’s most reputable and prestigious music initiatives. Coming together to celebrate the passion, value and diversity of Scottish music in 2020, The SAY Award strives to be egalitarian throughout all stages of the campaign, reflected in the fact there is no fee to submit an eligible album for consideration, and digital releases that fulfil the criteria are also deemed eligible. To view the 362 Eligible Albums submitted for consideration this year visit www.sayaward.com. Developed and produced by the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA), the 2020 campaign will be delivered in partnership with Creative Scotland, City of Edinburgh Council, YouTube Music, 54EP, Sweetdram, Culture & Business Fund Scotland via Arts & Business Scotland, PPL, Summerhall, Ticketmaster and new charity partner Music Declares Emergency. WHAT'S KT Tunstall To Play Special Gig

HOT! DOGHOUSE ROSES

from the latest releases to reach us ....

www.doghouseroses.net Some albums are like fleeting thoughts, written and recorded in a blink of the eye. Others are nurtured over time, allowed to develop and blossom and this is the case for the fourth album from Glasgow's Doghouse Roses

At PJ Molloys For ‘Passport: Back To Our Roots’ Campaign #BackToOurRoots

KT Tunstall, Pet Shop Boys, Russell Watson and Passenger have pledged to play gigs for ‘Passport: Back to Our Roots’, the campaign to raise money for grassroots music venues at risk of closure. Two further artists will be announced on BBC Radio 6 Music during the station’s ‘State Of Independents Day’ on Thursday 10 September.

TORRIDON

Speaking about the campaign, KT Tunstall (who will play Fife's PJ Molloys) said “Without grassroots music venues, there are no big acts. It’s as simple as that. The incredible eco-system of small venues exists, in the vast majority of cases, as labours of love. Constantly up against rapidly rising business rates and big developer interests, these essential community hubs are kept alive by often overworked owners and staff with an unending passion for music and the music lovers and musicians they serve.

TOM McGUIRE + THE BRASSHOLES

Their new album signals a significant progression in the band’s style, sound, vision and drive to showcase a passion for serious and original songwriting. With tracks inspired by men’s mental health and suicide in Scotland

Having worked my way through this amazing network, I chose the Windmill in Brixton as it showcases so many new artists and bands dreaming of playing famous Brixton Academy, just a mile away. I also chose PJ Malloys in Dunfermline, very close to where I grew up. I remember finding it so hard to find places to play in Fife, so a venue like this is so important to aspiring musicians.” Also performing will be Pet Shop Boys at Camden’s Electric Ballroom, Russell Watson at Manchester’s Stoller Hall and Passenger who will be playing at Brighton’s Komedia. The artists will be playing these celebratory intimate shows, on dates to be confirmed, when venues are able to open with no social distancing.

Entry to the shows will be via a prize draw which will run for three weeks from Monday 14 September until Monday 5 October via

said “I’m delighted to be able to play at the Komedia again! It’s a venue that I used to play frequently when I was starting out and it will be lovely to go back!" Classical singer Russell Watson said “Grassroots venues were crucial in the development of my career. I spent almost nine years in the working men’s clubs in the North West of England before my touring career as a recording artiste. It’s heart-breaking to see so many of these venues – which are the fabric of our communities, where people gather to drink, procrastinate and be entertained under such huge financial strain. Entertainment is essential to the U.K. It’s fundamentally crucial in driving a large part of our nation’s economy but also in the employment of hundreds of thousands of incredibly talented people - from lighting engineers to prima donnas. This is a time for us all to reflect on just what the entertainment industry means to us and to keep it alive during these most unprecedented times.”

A positive aspect is having time to get my digital musical house in order (after painting my walls) – to make them available to buy or hire at the SMC shop! www.hilarybrooks.co.uk www.twitter.com/hilarymusic www.facebook.com/hilary.brooks.351

Community Radio Station Run By Musicians Aims ..... to Support And Encourage Unsigned Bands ..... to Play More Scottish Music ..... to Serve Our Community

Chief Radio is a new community radio station which is looking to provide opportunities to people within the community which wouldn’t usually be readily available. Chief Radio will also provide opportunities to unsigned artists and eventually experience to individuals who want to work on or run their own radio shows. The idea of Chief Radio began in May 2020, when Kirsty Baird’s Musical Director of Sing in the City (home to 18 choirs across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife), and Good To Give : Local Hero -

home show on a Sunday morning between 10 and 12.

The single went straight into the Scottish charts at No.3 and No.27 in the UK Download Charts and then re-entered the charts at Number 33. The success of this was helped by the band’s fanbase and community radio stations across the country.

Other shows you can expect to find amongst the usual morning and drive time shows are: 'Aw Scots Show' and 'Top 20 official Scottish chart' – songs bought in Scotland and not the UK chart Chief Radio is trying to encourage listeners to avoid being a fearful listener. For people who want to listen to more flexible playlists which aren’t governed by the UK Official Charts and who don’t want to conform to the norm.

Commercial Radio stations chose to play only established artists and songs, at which point, Kirsty identified both, a need for a more level playing field for unsigned artists and more choice for listeners. If you are interested in volunteering, presenting, putting your band forward, sponsoring the In light of this, Chief Radio was set up to build a station or advertising with Chief Radio, email: strong network amongst unsigned artists, where kerry@chiefradio.com for more information. we will create a platform for sharing industry specialists and give them airtime. Edinburgh's Scots Music Group Goes International! 28 classes, in variety of traditional instruments and song, being taught by some of Scotland's top music tutors

:: Photos by Douglas Robertson Photography

Scots Music Group's new term of classes is now open for booking, and it's all online! Their programme of 28 classes, in a variety of traditional instruments and song, is being taught by some of Scotland's top music tutors. SMG wants to reach out to traditional music students around the world, forming new friendships and opportunities.

Development Worker Sarah Northcott says that this is an unusual chance to go global. "We'd like to connect with anyone involved in traditional music across the UK and overseas, and invite them to sign up. There are people who love to play and sing the music of Scotland everywhere – in Caledonian Societies, St Andrew's Societies, fiddle groups and folk organisations." "We want to turn this awful Covid situation into an opportunity to make worldwide connections. Our first priority has been to keep our current students and tutors in touch and making music as best we can, but we are now able to offer the same classes to people across Scotland, the UK and beyond. We can't offer beginner instrumental classes just now, but we have classes for improving beginners to advanced, all based on Scots music and song."

The Soundsystem Project the story? A youth led music project building their own soundsystem

The Soundsystem Project is a youth-led music project where the participants work together to design build and operate their own transportable 12-volt soundsystem.

Their tutors facilitate masterclasses in; DJing, MCing, Songwriting, Live Performance, Music Production and the creation of Music Videos. Whatever the interest, a role is found for everyone that takes part in The Soundsystem Project. Since the COVID-19 pandemic The Soundsystem Project have been working hard to adapt and overcome in order to provide music activities for young people in Scotland.
