At a ceremony presented by co-hosts Vic Galloway and Janice Forsyth at Paisley Town Hall, an audience of industry insiders, avid music fans and some of Scotland’s best and brightest creative talent watched as Anna emerged as the winner from a fiercely competitive shortlist to win the £20,000 first prize. SAY Award 2016 winner Anna Meredith said: “It has been a total honour and a privilege to be on the longlist and shortlist for the SAY award. It has been great getting to know all of the other albums and during these politically difficult times to see positivity, creativity and spirit coming out of the longlist and shortlist. Thank you to all of those artists. Huge thanks to the SAY award and my long suffering and hugely talented band who helped me make this real labour of love.” Varmints is the third album by London born, Edinburgh raised electronic and acoustic composer, producer and performer Anna Meredith. Meeting Demand Remains A Challenge For Scotland’s Only Music Therapy Charity Raising enough funds to meet demand is a continual challenge, says charity chairman, Donald Macleod, as Nordoff Robbins Scotland, celebrates 20 years of Music Therapy in Scotland. At a gathering in Glasgow to announce the charity’s 20th Birthday year, Macleod explained: “In 1996 we started in two special schools and a room in a hospital. Now we work with around 430 people a week and have two centres, two smaller clinics and most recently have started a service in partnership with Alzheimer Scotland in Aberdeen. Our team now comprises 16 therapists who use music to reach some of the most isolated people in our society. We always have a waiting list but for every new client and service we provide, we need to raise more funds.” The main fundraising event of the year is the

“Most of our supporters are music fans and musicians, in bands or choirs and hold their own fundraising gigs and concerts. You can also donate when booking online via Ticketmaster. To mark our milestone year, we are entering a team into the 26 mile Kiltwalk in Edinburgh in September - and welcome more walkers to join us,” added Macleod.

The majority of clients are children and adults with learning disabilities, global development delay, complex disabilities and autism. Hot Double Bill show from USA blends jugband hokum with Nashville style American jugband music meets Appalachian old-time at a crossroads in Nashville .… that’s what venues and audiences across the UK – including Scotland - can anticipate when an impressive double bill show featuring two of the top roots music acts in the USA arrive on these shores to tour this month.

10 String Symphony

HUGH KELLY

Hot trio, Hillfolk Noir have built themselves a huge Stateside following playing what has been described as music “filtered through a country-tinged, swampyswingin’, hillbilly-delta-blues-ragtime word machine”. BBC presenter Bob Harris is a fan and has described them as “amazing.” Working out of Boise, Idaho, they have a faithful army of fans in the UK too after six successful tours here. www.HughKellyMusic.com

Alt.Blues/Soul musician, Hugh Kelly found his ‘big’ voice busking on the streets of Edinburgh in his teens. Now 21, his debut EP combines intricate songwriting, catchy melodies & a sense of raw emotion. MNS absolutely love this!

Featured regularly on national UK radio, BBC World Music presenter Mary Ann Kennedy has described their style as “an incandescent car crash of blues, medicine show sensibilities, country and rock ‘n’ roll.” Playing tracks and raving about them at BBC Radio Scotland, Deacon Blue frontman and Americana presenter Ricky Ross told listeners: “I love this.”

EDDI READER

Reviewers too have been singing the band’s praises, with The List describing their output as “a beautiful blend of folk, country and rock 'n' roll with Depression-era inspired string band blues and hillbilly ideals.” The UK’s leading roots music publication, fRoots, said it was “a raggedy, rollicking adrenalin shot.”

www.eddireader.com

This will be the duo’s UK debut and it is eagerly anticipated by many. The album picked up a toprating 5-star review from R2 magazine, while fRoots said they were

“something out of the ordinary,” and AmericanRootsUK said they were simply “astonishing.” The double-header presentation, brought to the UK by leading roots music agency, Brookfield-Knights, opens with a show at Coldingham Village Hall on Friday, July 15 at 7.30pm. Tickets from local outlets or online at: http://coldingham.info/tickets

The fact that the band continues to return to tour here is a sure-fire sign that they have generated a reputation for delivering a good-time show to establish a strong position where they attract a faithful and enthusiastic following.

July tour schedule: 15th, Coldingham Village Hall / 16th, Tin Hut, Gartly / 17th, Harbour Arts Centre, Irvine / 19th, Performing Arts Centre, Kilbarchan / 20th, The CatStrand, New Galloway / 21st, Edinburgh Soundhouse event

Something new has started in the city Serendipity:

Music & Art Hand In Hand, Under One Roof Serendipity is a new series of events at La Belle Angele, which are showcasing musicians and artists from around Scotland, whilst offering something unique that explores new possibilities and new ways of combining creativity. This multigenre event allows attendees to enjoy two live bands and an art exhibition, all in one night. “It’s about joining music and creative communities in one; it’s about creating an arty space where people can delight their senses, where they can feel surrounded by a creative vibe and a cosy environment”, says Serendipity founder Pelochita. Animation artist and vlogger Erikrva, who hosted the launch, will be again on stage on Wednesday 20th July, when Serendipity comes back with its second event, offering FOLK + PHOTOGRAPHY. Showcasing her work on the exhibition will be Sandra Franco, with a portfolio of performing arts, editorial portraiture and live events. She uses photography both as a medium and as a process for research and self-expression in an exploration of the ever-evolving visual language. On stage, the talented singer and songwriter Alex Maxwell, who has been invited to perform at 'Folksville', 'Sofar Sounds Edinburgh' and 'The Listening Room' as well as having feature sessions with Edinburgh Unplugged and Catalyst Sessions, will open the night that will finish with Aaron Wright, which debut received four stars from Mojo and Q Magizines. He also stormed the festival circuit playing rousing sets at the likes of Glastonbury, Latitude, Hop Farm, Kedal Calling, T in the park and Bennicassim. Serendipity’s founder loves all her artists and she claims that these events “have arisen in order to break barriers and offer something unique, something that overcomes the individualism of specific art disciplines and seeks new ways of sharing and cooperating, in order to enrich people’s lives and broaden interests”. She says that “music is indispensable: the soundtrack of life and it’s always a muse for creativity to flourish”.

Hands Up For Trad ‘Landmark Award’ Presented To Greentrax Simon Thoumire of the Hands Up For Trad organisation, which promotes Scottish traditional music and presents the Scots Trad Awards annually, recently presented their ‘Landmark Award’ to June and Ian Green of Greentrax Recordings at the company office in Cockenzie, in the presence of musicians and friends. They included piper Hamish Moore, Ellen and Ian McCalman (the latter ex-McCalmans and producer of the ‘Far, Far From Ypres’ stage show),

In his presentation speech Simon said: What would Scottish music have done without Greentrax Recordings? Thirty years of releasing the best in Scottish music and as Sheena Wellington said, “Maintaining integrity, goodness and fairness to all”. Not only that the label created and sustained a revival in traditional music where young (and old) musicians could experiment with their culture, for example Shooglenifty’s ‘Venus In Tweeds’ album, which changed the world in my opinion and put an innovative musical Scotland on the map. It wasn’t just Shooglenifty though – Greentrax recorded and supported so many young artists when no one else did……….. So here’s to Ian and June and all at Greentrax Recordings. We cannot do without them and I look forward to the next inspirational 30 years!

from the many ‘special projects’ that have been undertaken in that time, including ‘Gaelic Women’, ‘Scots Women’, ‘Scottish Women’, ‘Steele The Show’, ‘The Eric Bogle Box Set’, ‘Scots in The Spanish Civil War’, ‘Guitar Music From Scotland’, three ‘Tapestry’ albums, ‘Far, Far From Ypres’ (Songs, Poems and Music of WW1 and currently the Greentrax best-seller) and more. The ‘Landmark Award’ comes only a couple of years after the East Lothian and Midlothian Chamber of Commerce presented Ian with the ‘Local Business Hero Award’. Other prestigious awards bestowed on Ian and Greentrax in recent years include: ‘The Hamish Henderson Award for Services to Traditional Music’, entry into the ‘Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame’ and an Honorary Doctorate from The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Ian Green’s autobiography – ‘Fuzz to Folk – Trax of My Life’, published by Luath Press Ltd., in late 2010, was the Scots Magazine’s ‘Book of The Month’ in April that year and was selected as a ‘Summer Read’ by Scottish Libraries in 2011. The book also has several five star reviews on the Amazon Books website. Greentrax is re-launching the book in 2016. The current Greentrax teams consists of Elaine Sunter (Royalties and Accounts), Pat Clark (Mail Order and Promotional Mailouts) and June Green (Director). scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download ALLAN MACDONALD & NEIL JOHNSTONE The Bruce 700

Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals. CHARLOTTE HATHAWAY BOREAS Ahoy Hoy & MIKE VASS Album (featuring Mairi Campbell) The Dead Stations

Album - cd / download - Release Date: 11 March “The whole forest has this feeling of going on forever. And if you lose track of the train line then you’re lost..." A story told through original music and audio drama featuring new songs by Mike Vass performed by haunting vocalist Mairi Campbell. Dead Stations are out of use platforms on a remote train line through the forested mountains. It’s a story designed to be listened to: a mystery about loneliness and the mind, inspired by a train ride through Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest and abstract ideas about Little Red Riding Hood.

Seasons

There Is a Train (and a platform at either end)

Intended as a brief companion to The Duke of Norfolk's album Three Days From the Wolf Month, There Is a Train (and a platform at either end) takes the shape of a journey. The EP employs sounds suggestive of train travel alongside The Duke's characteristic guitar and banjo to reinforce the themes of wandering and to frame a picture of life from birth to death.

'Like sun on the sea surface.' 'A haunting, ethereal bridge between cultures.’ (Sunday Herald) AHOY HOY, is the eagerly awaited debut album from Boreas, shaped by spanning the expanses of the North Sea. In this recording the band have created something both warm and sparse, shadowy and glistening, simple and intricate, it is indeed a glorious debut.
