COVID-19: Easy To Find Latest Advice + Resources For The Scottish Music Sector Advice :: Resources :: How You Can Help @ www.smc-covid19.com To help the Scottish music sector during the Covid-19 pandemic, Scottish Music Centre has created a new website packed full of advice, guidance and resources particularly for the self-employed and freelance musicians. There are three main sections with advice, resources and guidance on ways to work from home, health and wellbeing and of course hardship funds and grants from across the music ecosystem. The team is updating the website regularly.

universities closed and everyone in the music sector working from home, my priority was to build a new resource site that began to organise the incoming tide of sector information into one place. Our main focus at first was to publicise all the new emergency funds for musicians, following up with practical advice from leading organisations and a section on mental health and well-being, all of which our membership officer Laura Leslie and web developer Holly Pringle regularly update. The site has now expanded to encompass online support tools for the many musicians performing or teaching from home and most recently a section of entertaining activities to join in and stay connected with others online." The SMC is keen to encourage as many people as possible to continue to support Scotland’s incredible wealth of talent in our musical community. There’s lots you can still do – even though you can’t see your favourite artists live,

you can support them by joining in with livestreams or recordings of concerts, interviews and podcasts available online. You can lend a helping hand by filling in surveys about the impact of Covid-19, or by signing petitions. If you can, please consider donating to any or all of the very worthy causes which have been set up to help musicians and organisations survive. The SMC will keep adding new practical resources and creative projects as they emerge and anyone with new info or projects can contact them at info@scottishmusiccentre.com The direct advice website is www.smc-covid19.com or you can use www.scottishmusiccentre.com

Advice: Here you will find links to the current guidance for musicians and music businesses from key music organisations and funders across the UK, as well as general advice on Covid-19 from sources such as the Government and the NHS. Resources: This section includes a range of sources with advice on adapting to new ways of working from home - useful for everyone, but particularly handy for self-employed and freelance musicians, and those teaching from home. Supporting your mental health is crucial in situations like these, and there are links to help you practice daily self-care and to places you can reach out to if you're struggling to cope. How you can Help Page: Whether it's donating or signing a petition, there are lots of ways you can continue to support the music sector at this difficult time. You can also show your support and entertain yourself at the same time by joining in with live-streamed concerts, online choirs or taking advantage of content made available online by a range of individuals and organisations. Gill Maxwell, SMC’s Executive Director explains: “In the early days of the pandemic, with gigs and concerts cancelled, colleges and

The La-Llamas sound is a blend of Rootsy Americana and Celtic Folk built on a foundation of world music rhythms. Stories about real lives lived and disrupted in 20th century Hungary, several of which intertwine with Scotland. “…stunning debut album.” Celtic Music Radio “profound stories… we should listen to.” Folking.com “Robert delivers intimate songs, beautifully accompanied.” Northern Sky Reviews ****

Scottish promoters FLY launch new merch-store to support mental health charities, local food banks and the NHS shop and order online @ www.flyflyfly.co.uk/store

Scottish underground dance music promoters FLY has pivoted its festival business model today by launching its very first online merch-store dedicated to house music. Music is the Answer - Longsleeve Tee :: This tee was inspired by the 1998 Danny Tenaglia & Celeda's record: 'Music is the Answer, to your problems. Keep on movin' and you can solve them.' Many of us are struggling with mental health during the lockdown. It can make us feel lonely, depressed and anxious. We've found that music helps. It can give you energy and brighten up your day. The funds from this tee will be used to help vulnerable people in the community as part of a wider 'Music is the Answer' program to help connect people who suffer with mental health. Music is the answer. £ 30.00 [Pre-order: Shipped June 2020]

NHS Tee - 'Home Together to Relieve The Pressure'. Funds from this tee will be dedicated to NHS charities. £25.00 [Pre-order: Shipped June 2020]

The vast majority of tees and scarves on sale will raise money for The NHS, local food banks and mental health charities, with 100% of the profits being donated.

The tees and scarves are the work of graphic designer Ross Paul McEwan, already familiar to FLY fans www.instagram.com/arp__rpm FLY honcho Tom has said: ‘I’ve been self-isolating for 58 days now, and frankly being alone for such a long period of time has been mentally tough. One constant that has always put a smile on my face however is house music. The positivity of house and the very core values of the genre itself are all about: togetherness, unity and respect. ‘We are all in this together and using this time to reflect, I’m so grateful for the music and the parties that we all used to attend. Looking back on how goods our lives actually were can really make you smile. This will no doubt pass but until then, in the great words of Danny Tenaglia & Celeda:

Support Yer Local DJ - Longsleeve. FLY was built on its support for the local dance music community. Funds from this tee will be donated to local food banks to help support people who the government are not. Stand up and support your community! £30.00 [Pre-order: Shipped June 2020]

She has, with the help of fellow musicians, just released her debut single Angle to the Sun and debut Album entitled Bifurcation.

Alison believes music to be a powerful medium for breaking down barriers and bringing people together from different sectors of society including age, race and political views. The Ivors Academy and Musicians’ Union launch Keep Music Alive campaign to 'fix streaming now' The Ivors Academy and the Musicians’ Union (MU) have joined forces at a time of crisis for tens of thousands of music creators to form a new alliance that will campaign to Keep Music Alive. Covid-19 has hit songwriters, musicians and composers hard. Gigs and commissions have been cancelled, festivals and performances postponed, and recording studios closed. Since early March, over 20,000 applications have been received to music industry Hardship Funds. This crisis has brought into sharp relief the fact that creators and performers are sustained primarily by income generated by the live side of the music business and that streaming royalties are woefully insufficient. Thousands of musicians and music creators have taken to Twitter to highlight this issue, using the hashtags #BrokenRecord and #FixStreaming. MU members have reported over £21m of lost income since the Covid-19 lockdown came into force and members of The Ivors Academy anticipate a loss of £25,000 per person over a six-month period. Countess of Fife :: release new live ep

ep release date 9 May ..... PLUS online gig on Saturday 16 May

The Countess of Fife is an insurgent country outfit featuring Fay Fife - best known as singer with The Rezillos. The Countess of Fife defies categories but somehow locates itself within the insurgent country world.

Fay says: 'The Countess of Fife has a strong country slant but also a punky edge in that some of the songs are raw and edgy... but some of our songs have a more gentle touch… The Countess allows me to sing a different way and to get in contact with spiritual and softer themes...’ The Countess of Fife Live is released (on digital and as a limited edition physical CD) on Friday 9 May, with an online gig scheduled for Saturday 16 May. There are 4 songs – the reflective Angel in My Pocket, the dark and grungey Humans Are a Bad Breed (co-written with Goodbye Mr Mackenzie/Filthy Tongues’ Martin Metcalfe), a defiant Don’t Dress Me Up and country death rocker Take Me To the Grave (With a Broken Heart). The Countess of Fife began as a writing project in late 2016 by Fay and Allan Mcdowall of post punk country outfit So You Think You're A Cowboy. A more permanent live band formed in 2019 and The Countess of Fife have grown in to a live outfit with a dedicated following. Along the way they have played several well received Radio sessions and attracted fine press reviews. Shows include Bute Fest, Outsider Fest, Edinburgh Fringe & Cash Back in Fife festival. They recently headlined at Mac-Arts Galashiels and were due to play Muck & Mac Fest, July 2020. They are currently developing their sound and songs for a planned studio album. The Countess of Fife are: Fay Fife: lead vox & keys Lord Mcdowall: guitar & vox Sir Thaddeus G Pycroft: bass, Lady Nora Noonan: drums & vox.

Dave Acari :: releases new single from lock-down single release date 15 May

Alt.blues troubadour Dave Arcari’s new single Nine Pound Hammer breathes new life into a the traditional Americana classic set for released via all download/ streaming services on Friday 15 May. Until then, it is available to pre-save/pre-order via Dave’s website at www.davearcari.com The new single follows hot on the heels of Arcari’s April single Stick to Your Guns. A video for Nine Pound Hammer will accompany the release and be available on Arcari’s Youtube, Facebook and InstagramTV channels.

“The current lockdown meant we had to scrap my original video plans,” says Arcari. “The original location was in the forest and although only a mile or so from home and pretty secluded, I think we might’ve been pushing lockdown guidelines. “Luckily we live in a quiet, private spot on the eastern banks of Loch Lomond and we were able to film an alternative right beside the house. “My wife Margaret, carried out all filming duties and I did all the editing and post-production, so there were no social distancing issues,” adds Arcari for whom in-house production and independence is nothing new. “Having the ability to produce recordings, video, graphics and photos – as well as do my own web development and promotion – has been instrumental in being able to make a living as an independent musician and minimise costs or reliance on outside help,” he says. “So while necessity and finances have been the catalyst for developing my independence – and although I’m no expert, the skills I’ve picked up along the way are allowing me to continue to be creative and productive despite the lockdown and social distancing.” Arcari has recently been taken onboard by Reunion Blues Gig Bags as an official artist, a partnership which sees the premium instrument case manufacturer join Arcari’s list of endorsers alongside National ResoPhonic Guitars, Newtone Strings, G7th Capos and Diamond Bottlenecks. “Dave plays like he got his skin turned inside out and pretty soon my skin was inside out too listening and it was all good. That boy bleeds for you – he a real down deep player and a soul man…” SEASICK STEVE
