Such amazing musicians in our midst; we are so lucky to have you here in Sheffield @hall_jane

These sonatas by French composers Francis Poulenc and Camille SaintSaëns are glorious pillars of the solo oboe repertoire, here beautifully complemented by oboe pieces from two of the 20th century’s greatest English composers. While SaintSaëns’ piece pays fond respects to the traditions of classical sonatas from an earlier era, Poulenc’s work has a dark and hauntingly beautiful tone.

A very enjoyable recital from @LeonoreInfo. Stylish playing @markesutherland

Heard @LeonoreInfo at @BuxtonFestival – such glorious detailed playing with incredible connection @Lucyschaufer

90 minutes genuinely felt like 30. My son and I couldn’t take our eyes off the stage; we barely dared to blink

BENJAMIN NABARRO (Violin) TIM HORTON (Piano) MOZART Violin Sonata in F K.376 SCHUMANN Violin Sonata No.2 in D minor Mozart’s K.376 Violin Sonata is a notably relaxed piece with an air of naÏvety and wistfulness. According to the great German violinist Joseph Joachim who premiered the piece, Schumann’s Second Sonata “overflows with noble passion and the last movement reminds one of the sea with its glorious waves of sound”.

EVENING CONCERT

RODERICK WILLIAMS BARITONE

ANDREW WEST PIANO

Thank you for an amazing performance tonight. Spellbinding and masterful. @singingpedro

Thursday 28 February 7.15 – 9.15pm Upper Chapel £20 £14 Disabled & Unemployed £5 Students & Under 35s

It would be hard to imagine music more seductive in atmosphere The Financial Times on Ryan Wigglesworth

SHIFTING PERSPECTIVE ROBERT SCHUMANN Frauenliebe und Leben Op.42 (A Woman’s Love and Life) RYAN WIGGLESWORTH New work with additional songs by JOHANNES BRAHMS, CLARA SCHUMANN, HERBERT HOWELLS and SALLY BEAMISH

Schumann’s hugely popular song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben is today regarded as a pivotal work in the soprano repertoire. The words, with a female narrator at their heart, focus exclusively on a woman’s experience of love. And yet, the poems were written by male German poet and botanist Adelbert von Chamisso, and the first public performance, with Robert Schumann’s wife Clara at the piano, was given by a baritone, Julius Stockhausen. Our Singer-in-Residence, Roderick Williams, challenges himself to come to terms with shifting perspectives in the performance and understanding of music, presented in a thought-provoking evening of mesmerising music featuring a new work by Ryan Wigglesworth. From Wincobank, Sheffield, Ryan has come a long way since he was a chorister at Sheffield Cathedral! He is one of the foremost composer-conductors of his generation, having been Principal Guest Conductor of The Hallé from 2015 to 2018 and Composer-in-Residence at English National Opera. Post-concert conversation, free All ticket holders are invited to stay on for an informal Q&A session with Roderick Williams after the concert.

SUDBIN Romeo and Juliet Overture SAINT-SAËNS arr. SUDBIN Danse Macabre Op.40

Potentially one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century. Any chance to hear him should be snapped up! The Daily Telegraph

Yevgeny Sudbin was born in St Petersburg, then emigrated to Germany with his family, before settling in London in 1997 to study at the Purcell School and Royal Academy of Music. Rave reviews, international recitals and numerous awards have followed, all pointing to his outstanding virtuosity combined with rare sensitivity and insight. Yevgeny’s varied and dynamic programme is a showcase for both his championing of the delicate baroque compositions of Scarlatti and the crafting of his own showstopping arrangements, which recall the recitals of the legendary Russian-American pianist Vladimir Horowitz.

EVENING CONCERT The Piatti Quartet first came to Sheffield fresh out of music college and won over the audience with its magnificent performance. Six years later, the Quartet has toured the world, won distinguished prizes at Wigmore Hall’s International String Quartet Competition and held prestigious fellowships at both the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. They return to the Crucible Studio to perform Mendelssohn’s last major work, Frank Bridge’s beautiful set of short Idylls and a Beethoven quartet inspired by “contemplating the sky and thinking of the music of the spheres”. Post-concert conversation, free All ticket holders are invited to stay on for an informal Q&A session with members of the Piatti Quartet after the concert.

When it’s just me in that moment listening to the music, it’s very personal… and when you see the musicians in a smaller space, it’s so much more special!

MOZART Piano Trio in G K.496 SUK Piano Quintet in G minor Op.8 DVORÁK Piano Quintet No.2 in A Op.81 A delightful Mozart appetiser is the prelude to a Czech family affair. Dvorák’s Second Piano Quintet, featuring one of the composer’s most irresistible folk tunes, was an immediate success from its first performance in 1888. Czech folk and dance tunes can also be heard in Josef Suk’s Piano Quintet, a youthful piece with a beguiling blend of enthusiasm and melancholy. Five years after its composition, Suk married Dvorák’s eldest daughter!

TIM HORTON PIANO

Saturday 6 April 7.15 – 9.10pm Crucible Studio Theatre £20 £14 Disabled & Unemployed £5 Students & Under 35s A cycle of Schubert’s major Piano Sonatas (concert 3 of 4)

The Crucible Studio in Sheffield is one of the best places in which to hear and play music… The experience is particularly intense for performers and listeners and I think that the feeling of ‘them and us’, which is noticeable in many traditional venues, is completely eradicated. Tim Horton in interview with The Cross-Eyed Pianist (meettheartist.site)

SHEFFIELD JAZZ SCHUBERT Four Impromptus D.899 RAVEL Valses Nobles et Sentimentales SCHUBERT Piano Sonata in D D.850 Tim has assembled a decidedly upbeat trio of pieces for this recital. Schubert’s lyrical and romantic Impromptus preface Ravel’s Noble and Sentimental Waltzes. Schubert’s Sonata in D, inspired by a holiday he took in the Alps, is rare in his later output, being almost entirely positive, naïve and carefree.

They bring personality, musical class and incorrigible wit to a repertoire that covers the jazz songbook and contemporary songs as well as their own originals. Prepare for an emotional rollercoaster with this multi-award-winning pair.

TOMMY SMITH Saxophone PETE JOHNSTONE Piano CALUM GOURLAY Bass SEBASTIAAN DE KROM Drums

Carroll and Shaw are stellar singer-pianists alone. Together, they light up the stage with their often mischievous flights of soulful and swinging improvisation

Internationally-acclaimed saxophonist Tommy Smith and his outstanding new group pay tribute to his greatest inspiration, jazz icon John Coltrane. Performing favourite Coltrane compositions alongside Smith’s own homages to his hero, this concert promises exciting music full of spirit, passion, devotion and emotion. A presence on the global jazz scene since his teenage years with Gary Burton’s quintet, Tommy Smith has recorded for Blue Note and ECM Records and he regularly tours the world with Norwegian bass master Arild Andersen’s trio, widely regarded as one of the premier groups working in jazz today.
