FROM THE PRESIDENT BOARD OF TRUSTEES
So much has occurred over the two-year period covered by this report that to be able to summarize our achievements, I turned to the deep stack of Munson Bulletins in my office. Paging through the 17 issues that span the time period outlined in the following pages, I was in awe of what our organization has accomplished. Perhaps in the day-to-day, one loses sight of the long road traveled. One thing that strikes me is that the following pages reflect the exuberant resurgence of Munson from the daunting challenges presented by the COVID pandemic to our dedicated work toward a bold vision for our beloved organization.
In August 2019, Munson launched a comprehensive strategic plan, MWP2025 While interrupted by the pandemic, when our focus turned to providing a safe visitor experience across campus and a healthy learning environment for our Pratt Munson students, we have moved forward with vigor and determination.
That energy can be seen in our bold new brand and shortened name launched in March 2023. As Munson, we honor our founding family in our name, galleries, and art collections while embracing a community-centered future. In the spring of 2023, we completed a comprehensive Campus Master Plan that provides a vital roadmap for our future — a future in which we reach new constituencies, serve our region through innovative programs, events, and partnerships, and build on the revitalization of downtown Utica.
The last two years have seen that refocused strength as Munson has hosted nationally significant performances and exhibitions. Audiences were entertained by Gina Chavez, Sons of Mystro, and Sweet Honey in the Rock among many others. Traveling exhibitions, including Emma Amos: Color Odyssey and Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper, graced our galleries. We have generated important exhibitions with new research, such as Unchained: Alan Rohan Crite, Spirituality and Black Activism, and organized the record-breaking show Norman Rockwell
Having celebrated our 20-year affiliation with Pratt Institute in September 2021, Pratt Munson welcomed our two largest first-year classes on record in the fall of 2021 and 2022. The vibrant creativity and positive energy our students bring to campus fuel our aspirations.
Munson remains strong and with a steadfast dedication to our mission to create transformational arts experiences for our entire community. Through the generous support of our trustees, donors, sponsors, and partners, coupled with a dedicated and creative staff, Munson will continue to present over 600 programs and events a year, always striving to ensure the arts unite, educate, and inspire.

Munson creates transformational
arts experiences that cultivate curiosity and creativity, enlighten, educate, and inspire.
ARTS ARE ESSENTIAL
Munson is a steward of a great cultural resource that we enrich and preserve. We believe in the power of the arts to serve our entire community and see our art collection, programs, and classes as offering essential experiences that inspire personal and cultural transformation.
COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT
Munson connects people with the arts to enrich lives, encourage creativity, and offer opportunities to enhance cultural understanding. Through dynamic and thought-provoking programs, we bring individuals together and make the arts accessible to all segments of our community. We continue to serve as the cultural heart of Utica while reaching audiences well beyond and assuming a leadership role in the arts.
COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE
Munson staff and faculty serve the public in a welcoming, inclusive, and exemplary manner through authentic arts-based experiences in Museum galleries and through education, the performing arts, and collaborations. We make each experience on our campus—from visitors to students to staff interactions—positive and exceptional.

THEA BOWMAN HOUSE
COMMUNITY
PARTNER
Partnerships are key to a community organization. Together, we accomplish more, reach more people, and broaden our audience. Munson is fortunate to have such a partnership with our friends at Thea Bowman House. Located across Genesee Street from Munson, Thea Bowman is able to include Munson in their curriculum, having students attend all four of our annual Art Alive! offerings, take part in Munson’s Art Story program, and take special tours of exhibitions.
Munson’s 2019 Strategic Plan led to an expanded focus on engagement with members of our community, particularly those who are underserved. Since establishing that plan, Munson has made many programs for kids and teenagers free of charge, including Art Alive! and its associated performances and summer art classes, all thanks to a number of generous supporters, particularly MetLife Foundation. We have also been able to install a wheelchair lift in the Pratt Munson gallery and hands-free door operators at our State Street entrance, making all of our gallery spaces universally accessible.
Munson’s partnership with Thea Bowman began with a program called Art Reach in the early 2000s. By 2013, a new program called Art Story was developed using books as a device to encourage both reading and an appreciation for art. Long-time docent Paul Gonyea soon connected Thea Bowman classes with the Art Story program, deepening that connection and adding his own spin. By 2017, Munson offered additional Art Story programs just for Thea Bowman
students. Today, Art Story is offered more than 70 times per year to Thea Bowman classes, and Paul volunteers in their classrooms. Munson partners with the Utica Public Library to offer a drop-in Art Story proram that is open to the general public. Anyone who has witnessed the classes can appreciate the strong ties that have grown among the teachers at Thea Bowman, their students, and the volunteers and staff who make the program special.
In the words of Belmira Bajrektarevik, who teaches 3-anda-half- to 4-year-olds at Thea Bowman: “When you make it exciting for kids, the kids are happy.” Paul and his fellow docents do just that, and the energy on their visit days infuses all of our work with a sense of joy and purpose.
Munson has dozens of community partners from service providers to kids for autism support centers and Alzheimer’s patients. Our founding family believed firmly in the power of the arts to make a community stronger. We embrace that thinking and continue to keep the Mohawk Valley at the forefront as we continue pursuing our mission.
Members, sponsors, and Annual Fund supporters are partners in our work, enabling programs in every area of Munson. Thank you for your support!

ASTOR BURKEY
MUNSON COMMUNITY ARTS STUDENT
While Astor Burkey doesn’t know exactly what she wants to be when she grows up, the high schooler and Community Arts student is enjoying the opportunity to explore her interests.
Even before moving to the area, Astor said her family came to Munson and Fountain Elms. Now on a full scholarship to the Community Arts program, she’s been able to take classes in figure drawing, portraiture, ceramics, and oil painting.
This isn’t her first experience with art classes; Astor attended art classes in Queens starting when she was 11 years old. The classes were put aside due to the pandemic, but she reignited her art instruction at Munson and found the experience followed her preferred style.
“When I came here, it was the same thing,” Astor said. “The instructors were very informative and there whenever you needed them, but that hands-off approach is something I always appreciate.”
“
Every drawing I do, I want it to be better than the last one.”
Taking a special Community Arts course that is held in the Museum galleries as well as access to the Pratt Munson Ceramics Studio have been great experiences for Astor.
“Everyone here is very nice,” she said. “The biggest thing is the opportunity to work in the Museum because it’s not allowed in many museums.”
Astor said she’s seen the most improvement in her oil painting, developing better technique and learning how much paint and oil to use. Some things have to be learned by doing and Community Arts classes provide an opportunity for that. That’s certainly been true for Astor, who said she’s seen the improvement in her work.

CHRIS
HEILMANN
BOARD OF TRUSTEES VICE-CHAIR
Chris Heilmann returned to Utica a few years ago after retiring from a career in the finance industry, and he immediately re-engaged with Munson and other community organizations. He serves as vice-chair of Munson’s Board of Trustees and chairs the Finance Committee. Chris has offered thoughtful leadership during turbulent times in the market and, along the way, he has supported Munson through the Annual Fund, his Fountain Elms membership, and as a sponsor for several special exhibitions.
Chris takes a long view in his support of Munson, guided by the words of Robert Louis Stevenson: “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” He believes it is incumbent on us to leave a legacy, keeping
Munson fresh and relevant for future generations. Chris is enthusiastic to steward a great performing arts program and a world-class Museum of Art and School of Art, adding that Munson is the heartbeat of culture in Central New York:
You don’t have to go to New York City to have a great experience in the arts!” “
Chris and his wife, Cheryl, find it important to lead by example for those who know them and for others with the means to join them as supporters of Munson. They see their giving as a means to pay forward some of their good fortune for the benefit of others. Every gift is like a pebble in a pond, creating ripples that extend throughout the organization. Chris would like to see an endless series of ripples, all for the sake of our community.

JOAN SHKANE
MUNSON DOCENT
While her connection to Munson dates back to her arrival in Utica five decades ago, Joan Shkane started as a Member on the periphery of the organization.
Following her retirement in 2017, Joan was recruited to head a Speakers Bureau, a volunteer outreach program through the Museum of Art. The Bureau started with the Isabelle de Borchgrave exhibition in 2021, traveling around the region and sharing information about upcoming exhibitions.
Joan, a retired lawyer and judge, said the Bureau’s committee membership varied, with some docents but no professional arts background between them.
“None of us had a background in art,” she said. “So, we had to learn. The majority of us were docents, but not all of us.”
We rarely met anyone who said they’d never been to or heard of the Museum.” “
Each year, the Speakers Bureau visited about 40 organizations, with an average reach of about 1,000 people in five counties. The Speakers Bureau members, who worked with Museum Director and Chief Curator Stephen Harrison and Director of Development and Donor Relations John Murphy, gave presentations to groups as small as five and as large as 90.
“We rarely met anyone who said they’d never been to or heard of the Museum,” Joan said. “But we met a lot of people who said they hadn’t been there since they were kids. And I think they saw we were just regular people, that we’re not artists, and we don’t have an art background. I think it was important for them to see that we general folks could support this program and explain it.”
