Dear Munson Community,

How can it be late fall already? People often comment, “Summer flew by,” and this year, summer and fall certainly seemed to go by in a blur of beautiful weather and lots of activity. I hope you enjoy reviewing the Munson event highlights on pages 10 and 11 in this issue of the Bulletin.

One of the events featured is move-in day for Pratt Munson, which is always a highlight of the year for me—seeing all of the excited and nervous students accompanied by their equally excited and nervous parents and caregivers. The first-year students bring such terrific energy and vibrancy to the Munson campus. What particularly struck me this year were my conversations with younger siblings who were genuinely sad to see their brother or sister leave home. These moments remind us that at Munson, we're not simply welcoming students to our community—we're becoming part of extended families. What truly makes each move-in day extraordinary is the dedication of our incredible Munson employees. Coworkers from every division contribute something essential, and it's the collective warmth, genuine smiles, and willing assistance of all my colleagues that transform what could be an overwhelming experience into a celebration.

In all the events and programs listed in the Bulletin, you will notice the same spirit of community throughout Munson. We strive to make Munson an organization where excellence and care go hand in hand.

As we approach the holiday season, I am filled with gratitude for the remarkable community we’ve built at Munson. Whether you are a long-time member, recent supporter, or someone in between, your connection to Munson helps sustain everything we do. As you consider your year-end giving, I hope you'll remember how Munson enriches our community throughout the year and consider including us in your holiday generosity.

I wish you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season.

NOW OPENS BEFORE THANKSGIVING

This year, New York State will celebrate 200 years of the Erie Canal, which opened trade, spurred Westward expansion, and ushered in a new industrial era for the nation. Victorian Yuletide: Fancy Goods highlights some of the many objects produced to celebrate the canal from fine silver to useful ceramics. Come see some of the fancy goods that helped shape a legacy of shopping that defines today’s winter holiday experience!

Tali Margolin: Memories That Can Be Touched

On view Nov. 14 through Dec. 12

Opening Reception: Friday, Nov. 14, 3 to 5 p.m.

Through a series of mixed media works, Tali Margolin depicts everyday items as a way to safeguard memories, evoke a sense of intimacy and nostalgia, and highlight the void left by the loss of a dear person. Her work provides tangible connections to the past, transforming ordinary household objects into cherished keepsakes.

PRATT MUNSON GALLERY

CURATOR'S CORNER

PICKING APART PICASSO

Few artists have captured the divergent reactions to Pablo Picasso as well as Elizabeth Olds, a skillful caricaturist and talented printmaker. Her screenprint in the Munson collection, Picasso Study Club (47.19), honors the Cubist painter while skewering art pretensions. A stylishly dressed crowd stares at canvases that reference well-known paintings by Picasso. Olds provides glimpses of his angular portraits, monumental nudes, and the fractured face of a bull. Using tonal, primary colors and expressive outlines, Olds gives the image a Jazz Age verve even as she references Picasso’s preference for blue and heavy use of line.

I’m pulling this work apart just as I imagine the study club of six modern art aficionados depicted in the print would have done. Picasso has always been a divisive figure, loved and reviled in his own time as well as today. He argued that his fractured paintings, which depict subjects from multiple perspectives at once, are more truthful than any other style of painting, especially those that “look real.” Some theoretical physicists and philosophers of his moment agreed. Munson is lucky to have a peak-period example of the style, our Pigeon in Nest with Eggs (53.210), painted in 1912.

However, as a former professor of art history, I know that laughter, even sometimes anger, are as common a reaction to the artist’s revolutionary technique as awe. And I can’t help

MUNSON ON THE MOVE

NOW ON VIEW IN SPAIN

Two masterworks from Munson's modern art collection by Lee Krasner and Norman Lewis have been included in Miro and America, a spectacular new exhibition that opened at the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, Spain, in October and will travel to The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. in March of next year. These artistic ambassadors will trumpet the exceptional quality of Munson Museum of Art around the world.

but love Old’s depiction of art snobs whose vision and bodies are misshapen by their study.

Installing 20th-century art on the theme of seeing and being seen was among my first projects at Munson. As my former students know, it’s an idea that I find endlessly fascinating and revelatory. Thinking of Olds’s Picasso Study Club, I wonder if they saw my own studies on my face back in the day. I hope you’ll take the opportunity to view Picasso Study Club on the AO level before it returns to storage to rest, as works on paper must. While you’re at it, take a trip upstairs to consider Picasso’s own painting hanging in our gallery of modern art.

Picasso Study Club is on view on the ground floor of the Museum through the end of the year.

Experience the MAGIC OF THE SEASON at Munson

Victorian Yuletide at Fountain Elms

On view Tuesday, Nov. 11 through Sunday, Jan. 4 Museum of Art | Fountain Elms

Munson joins organizations throughout New York State in celebrating the Erie Canal’s 200th anniversary. This holiday season, the annual Victorian Yuletide display at Fountain Elms features the creative and commercial results of 19th-century New York’s most important infrastructure project.

Victorian Yuletide: Fancy Goods highlights artworks that were both useful and luxurious, incorporating additional artworks from Munson as well as borrowed pieces from local collections, spread over two floors of galleries in Fountain Elms. Downstairs can be found products of the new kinds of manufacturing and vast wealth that developed during the canal’s construction and the generation that followed. The rooms overflow with local silver, canal-shipped finery, and personalized gifts.

Upstairs, visitors can discover how local potters developed signature decorative styles, transforming everyday stoneware into works of art. Throughout the display, advertisements from local publications show businesses competing for attention and dollars. Fancy Goods reveals how Uticans shopped as a result of the Erie Canal’s completion 200 years ago.

Victorian Yuletide is sponsored by Gail Kulaga.

DR. CYNTHIA PARLATO-HURD AND DR. DOUGLAS HURD

Dr. Cynthia Parlato-Hurd and Dr. Douglas Hurd found Munson in 1987, and it has become a second home to them ever since. Cynthia, a native of Chautauqua County, and Doug, born and raised in New Hartford, have been members for over 38 years. Cynthia joined the Board of Trustees in 2000, deepening their commitment and conveying their unwavering dedication to Munson's mission.

“We feel that Munson is the heart of the community in so many ways,” say Cynthia and Doug. “Whenever we have guests from out of town, the first place we think to bring them is to Munson. Our entire family has participated in almost all that Munson has to offer, including the Museum of Art, the performing arts, and educational opportunities for all ages. Doug has taken community arts classes, and our daughter participated in the dance program when it was offered at Munson. Several of our family members have been docents. The Hurd family has been supporting Munson for decades.”

The couple have been sponsors of Jeffrey Siegel's Keyboard Conversations® for the last 25 seasons and are thrilled that this classical program continues to thrive. They particularly appreciate how well curated the Museum of Art exhibits are, enhanced by workshops, seminars, and opportunities to meet the artists. What strikes them most about Munson is the sense of community it creates. They've noticed that whether it's the classical piano series, film series, Concerts in the Court, or museum exhibitions, loyal attendees return season after season, creating a family-like atmosphere for familiar and new faces.

For Cynthia and Doug, Munson has become more than just a cultural venue, it's become like home. They emphasize that the community and their lives wouldn't be the same without Munson's presence. We

TRUSTEE SPOTLIGHT

F. X. MATT III

Munson is blessed with many volunteers, but one stands out: F. X. Matt III. He comes by his association with Munson naturally— his father was on Munson’s Board, including stints as president, for 30 years and his mother, “Duff,” was a steadfast supporter serving as a docent for 37 years. As F. X. completes his current three-year term as Board Chair in December, we are pleased to take a moment to share a bit about what Munson has accomplished under his thoughtful leadership.

F. X. joined Munson’s Board in 2007. His business acumen was vital as Munson navigated the 2008 stock market turmoil and the 2020 global pandemic. Over F. X.’s 16-year tenure on Munson’s Board, he has provided leadership as chair of the Finance Committee, vice-chair of the Board, and served on Governance and Museum of Art Advisory committees. He has served twice as chairman of the Board, 2012 through 2016 and 2023 through 2025. Under his recent watch, Munson has achieved some extraordinary things: launched its new brand, completed a Campus Master Plan, upgraded the Genesee Street landscape, was awarded a $1M grant from New York State Council on the Arts, and celebrated a 25-year collaboration with Brooklyn’s prestigious Pratt Institute in our Pratt Munson College of Art and Design.

While F. X. would be quick to credit others for these achievements, his steady hand and thoughtful counsel have helped set the stage. F. X. is an engaged listener and a consensus builder, qualities that have served Munson and the Board well.

We plan to keep F. X. close. His Board term continues through 2027. When you see F. X., please thank him for his outstanding commitment to Munson.
