Message from Marissa

Dear Regent Center Members,

We are up and running at full speed with our fall programs, events, and trips. Adult Bingo is coming up on Saturday, September 30. That event sold out two weeks in advance. Fast Times at the Regent Center is coming up on Friday, October 13. We still have space available if you are interested in signing up. I will close that event on Monday, October 9 so that I can order the food.

As for trips, we still have space on the Four Winds Casino trip coming up on Thursday, November 2. The Chicago Christmas Lights & Christkindlmarket trip is almost sold out, so make sure to sign up for that one soon. Many of you know that our Alaska Cruise Tour sold out within weeks of advertising. We do have space on the Greek Island trip in October 2024. I am also planning a Canadian Holiday trip for December 2024. I am officially signed up to chaperone London & Paris. The deadline to sign up for that trip is October 11, so if you have had your eye on it but haven’t signed up, you need to do so ASAP.

As mentioned in my weekly email the other week, in 2024 we are going to be adopting a new philosophy around our programs. We are going to focus on adding and enhancing the programs that will help us all to live our longest, healthiest lives. I will be sending out several surveys the last couple of months of the year to find out your program interests. So when you see the surveys in your email, please take a few moments to give your feedback.

Lastly, I want to wish our group traveling to Ireland safe travels! We can’t wait to see your pictures when you return. Stay well, Marissa Moravec

Frankenstein: The 1818 Text

Thank you to our sponsor

This group will be moderated by Janis Nowak. Books are available in the Regent Center office. Please note only 20 copies will be available, but you can also read using Hoopla, Overdrive, and Libby. Audio versions of the book are also available.

For the bicentennial of its first publication, Mary Shelley’s original 1818 text, introduced by National Book Critics Circle awardwinner Charlotte Gordon. 2018 marks the bicentennial of Mary Shelley’s seminal novel. For the first time, Penguin Classics will publish the original 1818 text, which preserves the hard-hitting and politically-charged aspects of Shelley’s original writing, as well as her unflinching wit and strong female voice. This edition also emphasizes Shelley’s relationship with her mother—trailblazing feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, who penned A Vindication of the Rights of Woman—and demonstrates her commitment to carrying forward her

mother’s ideals, placing her in the context of a feminist legacy rather than the sole female in the company of male poets, including Percy Shelley and Lord Byron. This edition includes a new introduction and suggestions for further reading by National Book Critics Circle award-winner and Shelley expert Charlotte Gordon, literary excerpts and reviews selected by Gordon, and a chronology and essay by preeminent Shelley scholar Charles E. Robinson.
