Message from Marissa
Dear Regent Center Members,
April came and went in the blink of an eye! Two of our Blue Zone programs started up and have been so much fun. Gratitude Journals is a fun, intimate group that is focused on finding the positive. The Gardening group has been a wealth of information when it comes to planting and harvesting.
Many of you know that I traveled to London & Paris with our group in April. We had a great time exploring both cities and their vast history. An update on our upcoming trips: there is still room on Athens & the Greek Islands, Montreal & Quebec City, and Switzerland, Austria, and Bavaria. Iceland is very close to selling out as I write this. By the time the Regent Report is published, it is possible that it will be waitlist only. I still encourage you to come see me if you’re interested. Many times I’m able to negotiate more rooms on the trip.
Our summer day trips have been published and are open for registration. Pullman has limited space, so make sure to sign up early if you have your eyes on it. Indiana Amish Country is a popular trip, and I anticipate it will sell out this summer.
Lastly, we have started up two new drop-in groups over the last month or so. Table Tennis is off to a great start. I love seeing new faces to our facility. Learn to Line Dance started up on April 16 and has a robust group of 10 that are determined to learn to dance.
Stay well,
Marissa Moravec

Pullman National Monument

Cost: $119 member/$145 nonmember Prog: 0061.23.2
Registration deadline: July 1
Located in one of Chicago’s most historic neighborhoods is the National Park Service’s newly created Pullman National Monument. In 1880, industrialist George Pullman, the owner of the Pullman Railroad Car Company, makers of the famous Pullman rail cars, built America’s first company town, complete with a factory, a housing community, stores and a hotel. We’ll visit the National Monument Visitor Center in the newly renovated Pullman Administration Building. While touring the Historic Pullman Foundation Exhibit Hall we will see an audiovisual presentation giving an overview of Pullman. The Hall also features exhibits and photographs of this amazing story. Next, we will tour the neighborhood and learn about this incredible district. A Pullman guide takes us on a leisurely walking and riding tour to see the highlights of this area. See the famous Hotel Florence, stroll past the red brick Romanesque and Gothic architectural row houses, and learn about Pullman’s demise. Lunch is at the picturesque Harborside International Golf Center on Lake Calumet. Lunch choices are Applewood Chicken Melt or a Burger. Please note there is limited space on this trip. Departs from the Regent Center.

Cost: $10 member/$20 nonmember

The world’s longest-lived people live in environments that nudge them to move without thinking about it. Growing a garden allows you to move naturally in a slow low impact way. Join us and get your hands dirty as we set up and manage our raised gardening beds at the Regent Center this spring and summer. Participants will be given a day of the week to water our garden. This program will begin April 4 and continue through September. Summer dates will be published in May. The fee goes towards gardening materials.

Blue Zones Gratitude Journals
Mondays, April 1–May 20, 10:30–11:30 am
Cost: $10 member/$20 nonmember
Prog: 0098.23.1
It is human nature to dwell on what isn’t going right rather than what is. This stress can take years off of your healthy life. Spend an hour each week at the Regent Center in a formal setting, thinking about three good things about your day. Then take those skills and journal at home about three good things that happened to you that day. It may be a person you’re grateful for, something you learned, the sun shining, or your community at the Regent Center! The fee includes the price of your gratitude journal materials.
This group will be moderated by Janis Nowak. Books are available in the Regent Center office. Please note only 20 copies will be available, but you can also read using Hoopla, Overdrive, and Libby. Audio versions of the book are also available.
Based on the true story of Richmond’s theater fire, The House Is on Fire offers proof that sometimes, in the midst of great tragedy, we are offered our most precious—and fleeting—chances at redemption.
