Dear Regent Center Members,
We had a wonderful wrap-up to spring with our Bingo & Lunch—thanks to the generous support of Aspen Woods—and a captivating visit from historian Leslie Goddard, who brought the story of a Titanic survivor to life. As we step into summer, we’re excited to welcome a new face to the Regent Center Team!
Meet Natalie Arriola, our new Adults 50+ Programs Coordinator Natalie joins us with a wealth of experience and enthusiasm. She currently serves as the Program Manager, Community Affairs & Health at Northwestern Medicine and has a strong background in community outreach and engagement, from youth to older adults. Her passion for inclusive, engaging programming makes her a fantastic addition to our park district team.
Meet Natalie in person at our Coffee & Cookies Meet-and-Greet at the Regent Center on Tuesday, June 11, 11:45 am–12:45 pm.

Mouth Tip from Dr. David Markiewicz
Keep an eye on the gums!
As we age, it’s common for gums to recede— exposing the roots of the teeth and making them more vulnerable to sensitivity, cavities, and even loosening. Gum recession often happens slowly, and many people don’t notice until problems arise.
The good news? You can protect your gums with a few simple habits:
• Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid damaging your gum tissue
• Brush gently in small, circular motions— never scrub side to side
• Floss daily to remove bacteria your brush can’t reach
• Ask us if you’re due for a periodontal screening—early signs of gum disease are often painless, but easy to treat when caught early
Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile—let’s keep them strong!

Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward
A moving story about family, survival, and love in the days leading up to Hurricane Katrina.
The story takes place in a Mississippi town and follows 15-year-old Esch, who lives with her three brothers and their struggling father. As a storm approaches, Esch finds out she’s pregnant, and the family must prepare for the hurricane with very few resources. One of Esch’s brothers, Skeetah, is devoted to his dog, China, who just had puppies. Their connection shows how deeply the family loves and protects each other, even in tough times.
The book won the National Book Award in 2011 and is known for its powerful writing. Salvage the Bones is a story about strength, hardship, and the unbreakable bond of family.
