WELCOME TO THE JANUARY 2017 NEWSLETTER...

Bring your best – revisited Welcome to 2017! It was great to ring in the new year with such a fun New Year’s Eve party at the Club. The rapid organization of this family friendly event was an excellent example of our members banding together and ‘bringing their best’. At this time of year it is customary to think about what the future may bring. To do this, it’s useful to look back and compare what we planned with what we did. For instance, back in August, we held a Club Forum to gather ideas for improvement across the Club. We’ve made good progress on the three key themes agreed at the Forum: • Recommit to our Values and supportive Behaviors – the Forum highlighted several examples where the values of our Club were not being lived. Yes, to improve our practices can mean we have to have some difficult conversations and take some tough actions, as the last few months have shown. Our Club’s culture is set by all of our decisions. This includes how we relate to each other, how we respect our Club’s equipment and facilities and the way we interact with the public and affiliated organisations, such as sponsors and supporters. Although we’ve made progress, I suggest all members make a new year’s resolution to carefully consider the impact of their decisions on our Club’s culture. • Online, Online, Online – it was loud and clear … our members expect their Club to move with the times and make their interactions with the Club easier by offering many more functions online. The Club is responding by making a concerted effort to investigate, trial and implement as much online capability as we can afford and manage. This includes online payment

for competition entries, online membership registration, online bookings, a new website and much more. I encourage everyone to engage with and support this effort over the next 6-12 months, especially since these changes will require members to learn new systems. Please provide constructive feedback so that we can continue to improve our Club’s online ability. • Communications – it’s often called the ‘life blood of an organisation’. The Forum called for an improvement in the way we communicate throughout the Club. There were many suggestions of how this could be achieved, with several being pursued already such as appointing a dedicated Communications Manager, more consistent and frequent information through online channels (eg the reach of our Facebook page has expanded enormously) and more face-to-face interactions such as Sunday Club Day ‘courtyard chats’. These are just the start. They also say ‘communication is a two way street’, so please consider how you can contribute to improving our communications, such as engaging more with the Club’s information channels – you reading this newsletter is a great contribution. Several other opportunities for improvement were highlighted at the Forum which are being considered and addressed. You’ll hear more about those as we make our way through this year. Fair to say that they all involve us ‘bringing our best’ to achieve.

Competitors prevail in a challenging Ted Scott event The 74 competitors that we had entered for the full course of our annual Ted Scott Marathon had challenging conditions for this year’s event. The wind was strong from set up to pack up and the whole race in between! It is an incredible achievement for anyone to complete this course and all clubbies who did just that are to be applauded - loudly! I had to explain to some visitors to the beach what was going on and it was great to have to tell them about how we have this amazing event that all club members right down to our u7’s can participate in. They certainly enjoyed the spectacle.

Ben Jones won the event for the fourth time, a record in the male category. Ben Hillen was the runner up. Joanna Maynard, a new member of our club was the first female with Caitlyn Knight runner up. Cameron Sudintas was the first masters male across the line. He won the event in 1997! Michael Kavenagh was runner up. Lisa Bergin was the first female master with Tracey Bartlett runner up. Congratulations in particular to those competitors. What was also great to see was a number of people who we have not seen on a club Sunday for a while.

This year a number of Life Members started the different races for us. Thank you to David Cronk , Amanda Lee, Mark Hills, Ed Neilan and Anne Marie Widermanski (Dave Wilson was unavailable as he was doing the event - great excuse!).

With a huge thanks to all that make it happen...

Just looking at the top 15 finishers, there are some interesting facts. Four families were represented in the top 15! 3 sets of siblings (Ben and Harry Jones, Callum and Caitlyn Knight , Ben , Luke and Kieran Foster) and a father son (Kieran and Stephen McChord) pair. 3 people called Ben were in the top 15!

These events do not function effectively without the support of those members who helped with setting up, recording, First Aid, water safety and packing up. A huge “thankyou” to anyone who helped out in any way. Never underestimate how much it is appreciated.

Mullaloo Athletes represent Western Australia in the Western Suns. Two of Mullaloo SLSC elite athletes will compete for Western Australia in the Western Suns team at the Surf Life Saving Interstate Challenge. Ben Jones and Wes Gould have both been selected to represent WA as part of the team to compete against some of the best competitors this Country has to offer. Both Ben and Wes have competed for the Western Suns previously with great success. We wish them well at Alexandra Hedland beach in Queensland on 20 January 2017. Right: Ben Jones & Wes Gould

Family Christmas Eve Paddle Full of Christmas sparkles, felt and pom poms, the annual Family Christmas Eve Paddle from Hillarys wall to Mullaloo on ski’s, boards, SUPs, IRB and surf boats – and even featuring a first - triple ski, was a fantastic morning with most beating the seabreeze coming back!

New Year’s Eve Party Oh what a night New Year’s Eve was! Huge shout out of thanks to JP Dooley and his team for pulling together – at very late notice a two part New Year’s Eve party that catered for all Club members! The evening started with a children’s party 6-9pm, the disco was cranking with DJ Stuart tackling some of the junior requests – who knew they had such a large knowledge of all things music! Dawn had the games in full swing with musical bobs a favourite and finishing with a dance off competition. From 9pm, ACE Entertainment cranked out the Disco tunes and had everybody boogying under the lights of the disco ball. There was hair, chains, flares, bling and some massive shoes on show! Thanks to all the members that embraced the Disco Fever theme and created such a fun vibe!

JP would like to thank the following team for helping him: Sandy and Stuart Clarke, Dawn Jones, Penny and Noel Fortmann, Dave and Janine Cronk, Pauline Hopper, Judy Baker, Jeff and Ali Baker, Alex Baker, Jodie Crayden, Tony and Kirsten Dobson. Also, Jesper Rasmussen for Bar manager and training Bar Staff and Alistair Cook (for organising TV collection and loading). Thank you to sponsor Lloyd’s Register for funding the “best costume” prizes for the night! Although everyone had a great time, there was some damage to walls caused by flying water bottles. Members are reminded that we are all responsible for our facility.

Lifesaving: Rescue Ready! The Holiday season and some hot weather finally brought out the numbers and our beach attendances have been at an all-time high on some days. Whilst we have our Rostered Patrols and Lifeguards at certain times, it is comforting that we have our highly skilled club members around our club and scattered up the coast who instinctively keep an eye out on the water. Some of them may have the Mullaloo livery on, but many remain inconspicuous, ready to pounce when required – “Rescue Ready”. They may be on the beach, on a boat or ski. Maybe in a café overlooking the water, kind of like a super hero!

head. Sarah knew exactly what was occurring and secured his upright body close to hers to immobilise him then assisted him safely to shore. This was a skilful application of a spinal rescue without any equipment, consistent with the standard procedures taught to members.

Being down the beach at all different times, often means that our members are involved in performing rescues out of Patrolling times. One example is our competition group that have been involved in many rescues in the past from rescuing people in rips, to managing serious spinal injuries. It seems December was busier than usual:

Two days post rescue the diagnosis was that this man suffered severe cervical and thoracic damage to C3 C4 C5 & T5 T6 respectively. The cervical injury alone was life threatening. The margin for error was remarkably small.

Last Thursday evening it was noticed that a kite was drifting aimlessly a significant way out to sea. Rachael Crabb was coaching Board training that evening and along with Pete MacLeod, launched an IRB to investigate. Upon arriving at the kite some 600m offshore, the Kite surfer was in significant distress and was rescued and returned to shore. On a Monday evening during Ski training and a return paddle from Hillarys, in a strong SW breeze, a kite surfer was noticed tangled up in their kite approximately 250m offshore, the group went to assist and Wes Gould towed the Kite surfer back to shore behind his ski. One early morning Board paddling session, it was noticed that two people on a SUP had been blown approx. 400 - 500m out to sea with the strong Easterly winds and they were struggling to paddle back to shore against the wind. Brett and Wes Gould paddled out on their Boards and towed the paddlers and the SUP back to shore.

The man was expressing increasing levels of pain and discomfort. This was managed by patrolling members. The Ambulance officers assessed the gentleman and immediately transferred him to the Joondalup Health Campus.

The initial and subsequent management of this man by our members most certainly made a difference to his short and long term prognosis.

ABALONE PATROL SUNDAY 8TH JANUARY After the original date of January 1st (New Year’s Day) was deferred due to safety reasons, last Sunday was the new date chosen by the Department of Fisheries W.A. for the first Abalone Fishing Day for the year. After SLSWA performed their Hazardous Surf Prediction early last week, it was deemed safe enough to go ahead with the season. The club put on two I.R.B’s and many land based lifesavers to provide support on the rocky beaches of Iluka, North of Ocean Reef Marina. This was essential to preserve lives and uphold public safety in what can be a hazardous scenario. Many thanks to Brandon Paull, Breanna Roberts, Holly O’Keefe, Sienna Lipscombe, Frank Browne, Natalie Godwin, Andrew Manning, Ed Neilan, Alistair Cooke, Phil Dee, Roger Gregson and Todd Bartle for your valuable assistance on the day.

Thank you to all of our diligent lifesavers for keeping our beaches safe this Christmas!

CHRISTMAS DAY RESCUE North Point experienced fairly hazardous conditions on Christmas Day. The surf conditions and the frequency of the large dumping waves are not the usual surf pattern for this time of year but given that the increased patronage the likelihood of an injury was increased. The regular voluntary patrol in front of the Club for Christmas Day consisted of approximately 10 members who were managing an intensely populated beach with similar surf conditions. Member Sarah Gregson, who was not on patrol but visiting the beach at North Point for a morning swim, was approached by a man in the water who explained he had been dumped by a large wave, rolling over and landing on his Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club • www.mullaloosurf.com.au • email: info@mullaloosurf.com.au • ph (08) 9307 7766

IRB (DRIVERS AND CREW) OPERATIONS FORUM Friday 20 January, 6.00pm in the Club Lounge

arena of IRB competition.

Early in the season, General Managers and Managers identified a ‘disconnect’ between the supply and demand for IRB services across the Club. An initial forum was held on the 24 November to brainstorm solutions. As a result, members are invited to attend this follow-up forum.

The forum will include: An outline of where IRB operations are currently at within the club.

The purpose of the forum is to encourage and invite all members with the appropriate IRB awards to take part in all aspects relating to powercraft usage within the club. The group will become the Mullaloo IRB Operations Group and will be encouraged to participate in some or many of the Lifesaving, Education and Competitive duties. Some of the duties will include – Coverage for Patrol and Abalone patrol obligations, • Sunday morning Set up and water safety duties, • Club events and carnival rosters. Being a part of this dynamic and expanding group will bring rewards of gratitude, fulfilment along with social benefits. In addition, there will be opportunities to expand on your skill base and become a part of the education component of IRB operations within the club and move into the fast-paced

• An outline of areas where help and personnel are needed. • The desired outcomes and goals of the group. • IRB Education Opportunities • IRB Competition Goals • Introduction of the IRB Operations Co-ordinator and their duties • Overview of equipment and its desired usage. • Basic maintenance standards The Forum is intended to be for all club members that hold an IRB qualification, however there are many opportunities for all members, supporters and parents with an interest in the IRB operation within the club to become involved. All attendees will be greeted with some light refreshments from the bar as a token of appreciation for your forthcoming involvement with the IRB operations group.

OPEN WATER SWIM – MULLALOO BEACH After the previously scheduled Open Water Swim run by swimming W.A was cancelled due to strong winds our club had the opportunity to host the event again on New Year’s Eve morning, Saturday 31st December. Round six of the event included distances of 500m, 1.25km, 2.5km, 5km and 10km. In addition to providing our club facilities for the day we also covered off water safety and first aid on the day. Many thanks to Trevor Bulley, Martin Kennedy, Gordon McCabe, Ryan Robey, Alex Upston, Roger Gregson, Alistair

Cook and Craig Bull for I.R.B support for the event. Especially for the early start in setting up and pack up of the large inflatable buoys for the swim. Also thanks go to the vitally important First aid support provided by Vicki Rasmussen, Jesper Rasmussen, Mark Hills and Bernie Flint. With the conditions being dramatically improved from the previous Tuesday, nearly 400 swimmers crossed the line in their various distances including many club members who took advantage of the local knowledge.

Surf Sports Wrap Well the Christmas break has come and gone and everyone is back into training. It also means that the Surf Sports area starts to really ramp up with competitions. There is something for everyone to be involved with, so here is a chance with an event which may suit you below. We provide all the training and equipment so come along and be a part of it.

IRB Racing A meeting will be held in the Club for all competitors and anyone (male and female) interested in becoming involved in IRB Racing. This sport is conducted over the winter period and involves being in a team to perform rescues, at speed, with an IRB. At the meeting, we will provide a presentation about the sport, talk about training times and take details from those competitors wishing to go to the Australian Championships. Meeting: Club Meeting Room 1, Friday 13 January at 7.00pm

All ages are involved, from U/15 (including U/14) through to Seniors. So, if you are interested, please email competition@mullaloosurf.com.au

Marchpast Competition We are looking to put together a Senior and Youth Marchpast team to compete at the State Championships. Marchpast is a traditional lifesaving event which requires a little coordination and a bit of patience. We have a lot of fun and train on a Friday afternoon at 5.30pm on the beach, followed by drinks in the Club (for debrief purposes of course ;)). You don’t need a Bronze and any lifesaving award will be suitable to allow you to compete. If you don’t have an award, we can help to get your first one. Come on down and be a part of the team. You will enjoy the group and an opportunity to represent your Club.

Points Day

Masters Competitors Meeting There will be a quick meeting for Masters competitors and anyone wishing to participate in the Masters State Championships on February 29 at Mullaloo Beach. We are also looking for new competitors, so if you are fit and would be interested in being involved in beach or water events, please come along to the meeting. If you cannot make the meeting, please email your details (name, age at 30/9/16, details of the events and teams you wish to compete in) to Jenny Orme on rorme@bigpond.net.au Meeting: Club Meeting Room 1, Sunday 15 January at 8.30am sharp! (followed by points day on the Beach)

Champion Patrol, Champion Lifesaver and First Aid Competition We are looking for people who would be interested in competing in Life Saving events. If you have good lifesaving skills, and are reasonably fit and would be interested in performing those activities in a fun and competitive environment then this may be for you. We will provide all the training and it will be in a fun environment. Champion Patrol and Champion Lifesaver have an element of Theory, Resuscitation and physical activity involved which all lifesavers should be capable of. First Aid competition uses you first aid knowledge and extends it into a competitive environment. Working as a team of 2, you have to assess and treat a number of patients in a small period of time. It’s a lot of fun (if not a bit challenging) and gives you a chance to use those first aid skills.

This Sunday January 15, is a points day for our Youth, Seniors and Masters Age Groups. Events start at 9.00am for water and Beach. Come on down with your equipment and be ready to go on the beach by 9.00am.

Online Carnival Entries We are trialing an event registration system to register for Senior and Youth, Water and Beach Carnivals. You can now register and pay (with a credit card) on-line for your carnivals with this system. Go to the link below, register on the system and get a member login and then enter the events you want to compete in. The next couple of carnivals are in the system now. Information about each carnival is attached to the event information on the system. There is a small charge for using the on-line system credit card payments, and we will review this after the trial, however, the convenience of registering on-line should be beneficial. Don’t forget to give your feedback to Carlo on surfsports@ mullalosurf.com.au You can access on-line registration by going to https://www. revolutionise.com.au/mullaloosurf/ and register as a member. It is simple and quick. Click Here to Register

How to care for your surf club board With thanks to Trevor Bulley for this informative and useful article.... Hard surf club boards are made of a light foam core with a fibreglass/epoxy skin. Soft boards usually have an EVA skin also with a foam core. Basic care and simple first aid will minimise the need for serious repairs and make your board last longer. Boards are subject to a lot of stress through use in water and impact with other boards, however much of the damage happens out of the water or through incorrect handling.

Junior Board handling

breaks in the board as well as around loose handle screws. Lying on the hot sand the board expands, then rapidly contracts on contact with the colder ocean and water is drawn in. If you do have holes in the board, as soon as possible stand the board with the holes closest to the ground, in the sun, for a couple of hours (not more). The board expands and gravity does the rest. Total water drainage might take a couple of days, this should not be fulltime in direct sun, a couple of hours at most. Some glues holding the kneepads breakdown with prolonged sun exposure. Then either get the board fixed with epoxy/fibreglass or use a tape or similar sold by hardware stores. Board First Aid

Correct – thumbs up! Incorrect – thumbs down, dragging.

Mal Board handling

• 3M Scotch Tough DUCT tape or similar. This product works well, is quite water tight, durable and leaves no residue. Don’t use tapes that leave a residue on the board as this needs to be removed before epoxy and fibreglass repairs can be done. • 2-part epoxy mixes. Two part epoxy putty stick fillers like PC Products 57g PC Marine Epoxy Putty. Good for short term repair, fast setting, and sanded back. • Epoxy/fibreglass/carbon. Various mixes exist from hardware stores and ships chandlers. Materials in liquid form are toxic, especially the hardeners, facemasks required if working with this. Surf club boards are usually epoxy resin based, do not use polyester resin as this reacts with the foam core. Gelcoat/paint damage

Correct – thumbs up! Incorrect – thumbs down, dragging. Nose and tail scraping. The tail corners of the board are the most exposed to scraping along the beach, effectively sandpapering through the fibreglass skin down to the core. Once this happens, saltwater is absorbed into the foam core, adding weight and rigidity. Storage. Store board in the shade. If storing upright stand on a soft floor (eg rubber mat), and ensure they are not easily knocked down. Hard stone floors will sandpaper the tail away over time. Boards can also be slung below the rafters in the garage or similar, above head height. Handles. The larger Malibu boards usually have at least one carry handgrip indented into the side rail, this is designed to be used in starts and carrying. The four (usually) material handles are there to be used when riding waves and on the surf exit, rather than normal carrying or running with the board on the surf entry. Handles are held with screws, rivets or bolts into a block anchored in the board rail. Over time the fibreglass wears around the bolt and the handle may start pulling away. This lets water into the board damaging the core, however as the handles are on top of the board less water gets in here than underside or tail/nose breaks. Get these fixed early. Water damage and drainage. Water enters the board through

• Usually not an immediate problem unless the fibreglass skin is also broken. Paint adds some protection to the board, but a break in the paint lets minimal water into the board if the fibreglass is unbroken. Covering it with tape will manage the immediate problem easily and cheaply until you break the board properly. • Paint color. If you have a brand new board with designer paint, best get the paint job done by a professional fixer. Basic repairs are designed to water proof the board and toughen the skin against damage. Colour matching and design, if required, is best done by manufacturer or board shop. Knee pads. If knee pads tear or pull off, best to get these replaced entirely. Many glues leave residue that needs cleaning and can harden and shrink the foam of the kneepad. Fin boxes. Never surf the board onto the sand, fins and fin boxes can crack and break off. New fins are expensive and fixing a damaged finbox is expensive and time consuming. Hairline (and bigger), cracks develop around the finbox and let water in. Trevor is usually on the beach on Sunday mornings if you want your board checked or repaired. Otherwise you can drop them off at 100 Castlecrag Drive, Kallaroo and fill your details in the book at the front door. Trevor Bulley | 0411 440 399 | tbulley@bigpond.net.au
