Education and Courses The Education team has had a busy January and it’s looking to continue through to March. Bronze Group 3 and SRC Group 3 courses completed, a skills proficiency mid-way through the month, an IRB Crew course almost complete and the commencement of Bronze Group 4! Thank you to the team of trainers: Sandy Clarke, Lloyd Brosens, Lyn Brosens, Judy Harlow (trainee trainer getting signed off for Trainer); assistants with training/water safety:

Bronze Medallion Group 3 Perfect sunny days for around 95% of this course that went for two weeks with the 14 candidates attending almost every day to complete the course. With new skills and some fun memories (a new signal of chicken dance and the requirement of pink vest and sunscreen before rescues were debatable additions) this group made great use of the summer holidays! A great achievement for the group particularly as so many were brand new to surf club!

Terry Upston, Nat Godwin, Alex Upston, Andrew Karagoglou, Isaac Karagoglou, Tabbetha Marshall, Dara Mills, Brett Warner (Bells patrol); and Assessors: Mark Hills, Tracey Tenaglia, Vivienne Greenfield, Dave Rossow, Paul Berry, Lyn Brosens, Tony Greenfield, Laurie Campbell, Neil and Janie Rowse.

Surf Rescue Certificate Group 3 This three-week course with 10 candidates had some of the blustery of winds from the south-west thrown at them given their water sessions were in the afternoons – but it certainly got them well prepared for their assessment. It was great to see the first aid scenarios go so well and we are confident that this group of new recruits will be valued contributors to our patrols. Thank you to the trainers: Sandy Clarke, Lloyd Brosens, Lyn Brosens, Guy Edwards; Assistants: Simon Gidley, Martin Fisk, Brett Wenn, Tony Greenfield (Redgate patrol); Assessors: Vivienne Greenfield, Tracey Tenaglia, Mark Hills, Tony Greenfield, Laurie Campbell, Lyn Brosens and Mark Cleary.

Lifesaving: Drone surveillance Abalone Patrol Sunday 5th February 2017 The club attended Abalone patrol to cover the rocky beaches of Iluka, North of Ocean Reef Marina. This was essential to preserve lives and uphold public safety in what can be a hazardous scenario. Conditions on the day were favorable and no incidents were reported. The Club provided two I.R.B’s and seven land based lifesavers to cover the beach in addition to the S.L.S.W.A. Jetski, Chopper and Incident Managers. This time we had special help from the S.L.S.W.A Drone for the first time at Abalone Patrol as a trial. The Drone was able to cover some 800m of Coastline in addition to our normal surveillance. Many thanks to, Natalie Godwin, Andrew Manning, Ed Neilan, Andrew Gillies, Laurie De Mamiel, Steve Mignon, Ayden Bartle, Carlo Tenaglia, Edgar Coello, Ximena Coello, Taj Hawke for your valuable assistance on the day. Only one more Abalone patrol to go on Sunday March 5th.

This is why we do what we do! In January’s newsletter, we reported on the quick thinking and skills off off-duty lifesaver Sarah Gregson (amongst others) who performed a spinal rescue on Christmas Day. Today, we can report that the gentleman in question, Matt Burley is making a great recovery from a severe neck injury. Matt was kind enough to tell us his side of the story, with a heart-felt thanks to everyone involved: “Just wanted to express my thanks to the Mullaloo Surf Life Guards who were on Mullaloo beach, both on and off duty, on Christmas day morning. Hopefully my post on here will reach them all. I was with my family enjoying the Christmas day atmosphere on another beautiful morning in WA. We were just about to pack up and return home to make a start on the Christmas food, when I decided to treat myself to one last dip. I was swimming back into shore, probably no more than 15 yards out, when I was picked up and dumped on my head by what can only be described as a “modest” wave. As I staggered out of the water, dazed and with blood pouring down my face, I thankfully walked straight into Sarah (Gregson) who very quickly grasped what was going on and immediately lay me on my back, stabilised my head and told me in no uncertain terms that I was not to move. Anywhere.

Within seconds I was surrounded by 3 nurses, several surf lifeguards, a couple of policemen and lots of people helping to shade me so that I didn’t get burnt to a crisp. All of them continuing to insist that I didn’t move despite the fact that I just wanted to try and “walk it off”. Anyway, 1 ambulance ride, 1 X-ray, a CT and MRI scan later I was diagnosed with a crack in my C3 and C4 vertebrae with the soft tissue and ligaments in between the two completely ruptured. An injury that if I hadn’t been immobilised and looked after on the beach in the way that I was could easily have been catastrophic. I am under no illusions that the actions of those people on the beach that morning saved my life and mean that after I have spent my 3 months in a neck brace I hopefully get to walk away with nothing more than a story to tell. My family and I are so grateful for everyone’s help that day, I hope I get an opportunity to thank you all in person. Happy New Year Matt” We wish Matt a speedy recovery and hope to see him back enjoying the waves before too long. To all our lifesavers: never underestimate the impact that your skills can have, whether on patrol or not, and the difference you can make to a life, and an entire family. This is why we do what we do. Left: Matt & his family on Christmas eve, before the incident. Right: Recovery in hospital.

Surf Sports Wrap It’s been another busy month and since the Christmas break we have been involved in 4 Ocean, 3 Beach, 3 Boat and 1 Lifesaving carnivals. We have also competed in 2 carnivals in Queensland, including the interstate championships and 2 carnivals in NSW. So, we have been spread far and wide, but we have some great results and most of all, our competitors have been really enjoying themselves and the competition. Both Ben Jones and Wes Gould did our Club and Western Australia very proud with some great results at the Interstate Championships, helping us finish third. Attending these carnivals is a fantastic experience. I see our competitors giving their all to race for their Club and the State. We have had some great results this season and many of our younger competitors are gaining more and more confidence in their own skills.

about, getting involved and challenging yourself. It has been pleasing to see more competitors attending carnivals. Yesterday, I attended the Beach Round 6 event at Quinns Beach and it was very pleasing to see our young team competing against some very tough competition. We had some great results, including Ben Hillen winning the 2Km run and Ellie Marlow coming second in U/15 Female Flags as did Tyler Nuku in the Male event. Click to View Full Results Next month is equally busy with several carnivals and some of the State Championship events being run.

On Sunday 22 January, we held a Teams carnival at Mullaloo and it was great to see some of our youth members get involved in the competition. This is what Surf Sports is
